I waited 40 mins...it wasnt even that busy..all i wanted was a fade..lets just say i got a bad cut. When i went to go pay i notice several of the caucasian customers all paid less than $20...I was charged $30! When i had a similar cut. I think they only cater to caucasians so if you're a minority i highly DONT recommend this place theyll rip you off and give you a careless cut..So in other words theyre over priced, races and awful quality cuts. Im never going back.

So I was looking to change barber shops for sometime. I did my online research and found Rudy's close to my home which I liked. But when I started reading reviews from other sites they were mostly negative. I thought how bad could it be. One reviewer talked about get charge for a shampoo with his hair cut. It must have been the first time he had received a hair cut in public. Yes they did offer the shampoo, but I turned it down cause my hair was fresh and clean already. I took pictures and talked to the stylist. I have had two different people cut my hair there. They both did a good job and made suggestions and the end result I was happy with. The barber shop can always be a little nerve wrecking, Rudy's is no different. Great location and trained stylist. Shouldn't expect more.

I have been going to Rudy's Silverlake for 2 years now and have had many stylist do my hair. Some are good and some are alright. Two months ago I started going to Tipton, He is awesome! the best haircut I have ever had! He has over 20 years experience and it shows. So you see , it is not about Rudy's, it is about the person you go to. Rudy's,, you are lucky to have such a great stylist doing Great haircuts for such a cheap price, people take advantage and get a great haircut from a great artist.

I didn't have a hair over 3 inches on my head and somehow I walked out $32 in the hole after tip. I don't care how nice you are, but don't toss me in a chair and start shampooing because "I had product in my hair." Just buzz and trim and be done with it. I was on my way to the gym for crying out loud. I assumed the cut would cost $15, instead it was double. My drunken uncle could cut my hair just as well.... I'm an athlete, not a movie star. Treat me like one.

Unless you really want a hipster, uneven, pomo thing with your hair. These people honestly don't have solid hair cutting skills and it seems to be more about the interior design and "cool vibe" of the place. Also they have no personality whatsoever and seem kind of angry all the time. I guess that's part of the whole hipster package, but they put that stuff ahead of doing a good job. Avoid.

As a first timer (and last) at Rudy's I should have known immediately by looking at my disinterested stylist that I was in big trouble. She was as imaginative as a clipper wielding barber at Camp Pendelton and was clearly not keen on understanding what I wanted. At first glance Rudy's is a fun, place. I was very happy that I wasn't charged--which may speak to the kindness of management--but I caught a negative vibe from it's arrogant staff. Go to Shorty's instead on Fairfax.

I am a male and I figure I have gotten about 10 haircuts here over a period of 2 years. ONE of them was one of the best I've ever gotten but that was with me talking the poor girl through every step of the cut. I would say THREE of the cuts were just okay. That leaves me with SIX bad haircuts - everything from being uneven to whitewalled ears to something reminiscent of a mullet, you name it. ONCE I even had to get my money back because the haircut was so bad. So if you want a hipster, spiky, streaky, faux-hawk rat-tail then go to Rudy's. If you want to look good, stay away. These kids are hired for their hipster look, but they seriously lack experience.

Pros: They're good with edgy looks, spiky styles, buzz cuts, faux-hawks, choppy hipster mullet looks

Cons: Stylists lack experience, too much texturizing (aka. butchering), don't do well with normal men's styles.

Rudy's Santa Monica was a major disappointment after an excellent haircut at the Silver Lake location. I was forced to explain the desired haircut four times before it was even marginally understood, and the resulting haircut was uneven and not well blended b/w the longer top length and the shorter side/back length. Additionally (unlike at Silver Lake), despite being a buzz cut, I was charged $24 rather than $15 because the cut "was two different lengths." Rudy, please ensure consistent quality in your locations and among your employees.

I've been here to get highlights and cut, about four times now. Every time I had a different stylist and every time I left very pleased.
The staff is friendly, some are hard on the edges but very good people, great personalities. I dress and look nothing like the staff and always feel very welcome.

I just got my hair cut at Rudy's in Santa Monica and my experience was overall wonderful. I called ahead of time and put my name on the list, so I only waited about 5 minutes. The staff was really friendly and the girl that cut my hair listened to what I wanted and my concerns. My cut is basically perfect and the bill was under $40 including tip (I have mid-length hair), making in one of the cheapest cuts I've had since puberty. I will definately return.

*Note: The style and invironment is very much alternative (hipsters, tattoos, etc) so if you simply want a basic cut, this might not be where you want to go. I didn't find the staff pretentious or all, but I could see that it might be that way at the Silverlake location

Pros: Cheap, good haircuts, you can find free parking in the neighborhoods.

Cons: Nothing, really. And I usually have a few complaints about salons.

Inexperienced staff. Don't get color done, I paid $100.00 to look like someone poured mud on my head. I had to go home and bleach the hell out of it.

They need to rename this place to Rudy's Horrible Hair Salon for Hipster Posers. When a place puts the word "Barber" in its name, I immediately think of people that know how to properly cut men's hair. I decided to give this place a try since it was close to my house and I will never return. The people are friendly but they are not barbers. They do not do any blade clean up using shaving cream. I asked for a zero head shave and what I got was some faux hair cut that was nowhere near a zero or even a one clipper cut.

Go here if you want to get that goofy hipster look with an unkempt, incense scented atmosphere but don't expect a true barber shop.

I moved to the Silverlake Los Feliz area about 2 years ago, and for some reason never have gone to rudy's before. I went to rudy's last week on a teusday morning. To my surprize there was hardly any wait and tons of parking. A soon as the receptionist took my name I was called. My stylist(Vanessa) sat me down in her chair. She did exactly what i wanted and gave it a little Siverlake Funk, which was very refreshing and subtle. She walked me to the reception desk and gave me her card and explained how I could call to put my name on the list in future haircuts. I will be going back to rudy's and i would recomend it to friends.

Stay away from Bruce and his plastic Barbie brush. He will manhandle your head and should stick to buzz cuts and mens styles. He has no idea how to style women's hair, and finally passed me off to someone else when we both were at the unserstanding that he was just not going to be able to accomplish what I'd gone in for (a simple wash and blow-dry. don't let him near your hair with scissors!). I was on the verge of tears nearly the entire time. All I can say is UGH!

I went to Rudy's on Melrose for my first hair cut since moving to LA. They were very friendly and overall it was a good experience. They were a little short when quoting my wait time and I had to wait about 20 minutes, but no big deal b/c there are lots of magazines to read and good music. Jerry did a great job cutting my hair; he knew exactly what I was going for, even though I am not very good at knowing or describing what it is I want. It is a cool environment and they weren't snotty at all. Keep in mind this is not a luxury celebrity spa folks, so don't go expecting a world class experience. Its just a barber shop, they cut hair and they do it well. I am glad I found a new shop on my first try since moving here. The best part.... THE PRICE!!! VERY AFFORDABLE!

Stay away from all Rudy's Barbershops! Their stylists are inexperienced and have no idea what they are doing, things as simple as "just a little trim" turn into losing several inches of hair and a totally new style you didn't ask for. Your odds of getting just a completely terrible haircut are well above 75%, I've now tried 3 different locations (sunset, melrose and santa monica) and all of them are awful. You're better off at Supercuts, you'll get the same terrible haircut and only pay half as much.

They should consider giving away free hats with every haircut. I'm going to need one for the next 4-6 weeks waiting for this travesty to grow out.

Rudy's wait is horrible, unless you call ahead and put your name on the list. I've done it every time now, and it's makes a huge difference. They'll tell you how long the wait is, and then be ready for you at that time. I've had good and bad haircuts here, as I can't go to just one barber. That part of it isn't the greatest, but I do like most of the haircuts that I've had, and I like the hipster atmosphere. I always go here, as the haircuts are also very well priced.

Not only did I just get the worst haircut of my life but the people at Rudy's were rude, pretentious, jerks. I get it, cool warehouse space, walls plastered with posters, potential hipsters cutting your hair. They dont know what their doing. They butchered my hair and gave me bangs that start at the back of my head. They gave one of my friends what looks like a bowl cut and made my other friend look like an elf from Lord of the Rings.

Unfortunately they think that selling prints and design magazines allows them the right to treat their customers with no service and give people bad haircuts. Its a house of horrors. Stay away.

I have had problems with the lines at Rudy's too, but I always think it is worth the wait. I recently found out they opened a new location called Rudolph's (on Melrose) where you can book an appointment. It is a little more expensive, but completely worth it.

If you've got five to seven hours of spare time and you're looking for a barbershop to go to, Rudy's is the place for you. They've got magazines to purchase, but you might also want to bring your own reading material to get you through the later hours of your visit. A sleeping bag might also be a good idea. While you're enjoying the wait, however, make sure to check up on your parking situation every hour or so because the cops have been known to issue a ticket or two on the surrounding streets. Another remarkable thing about this place are the people working at the counter. Did someone instruct you guys to "play dumb?" Organization at its finest. Rest assured though, a $40 parking ticket + a $26 haircut+ 7 hours spent in a barbershop= a great time! You just have to be patient, VERY patient.

I, like the rest of the bargain seeking public, thought I would try Rudy's upon a friend's recommendation. I don't know if my stylist was deaf, dumb and blind but, I asked her an 1/2" trim with long layers and showed her pictures of women with just that. I asked for no blunt edges and just a soft looking, standard trim. She asked if I wanted it razored and I said, "NO! just scissors." What I got was about 3" lobbed off into a blunt cut that she essentially razored, but just used scissors. And it's uneven! She barely spoke to me the entire time and just started hacking away. She took me from pretty, long hair to a ugly, uneven mid-length cut. I learned my lesson, quality is worth paying for! I called for a refund that I will put toward my trusted, if more expensive, hairdresser.

No appointments, only calls to get on a wait list for that day. Hipster receptionists that usually sport the tousled, "my hair's a mess, but I use expensive hair care products to look this way." Located in a converted garage filled with a random mix of beauty products and hipster accessories, this place can be too much of a scene to be seen in. It may take a few trips to find a hairstylist you want to "go steady with," but with what would seem like a steady turnover, I never found a stylist to stick to. All right cuts for the price ($26 for "long hair").

Tried Rudy's twice. Both times I, a male with fairly short, easy hair, ended up with a bad cut. I am very good with specifics for the stylist, I even use previous photos of haircuts I've had for reference. No go at Rudy's. Main complaint: uneven. Days after the cut I kept finding strands of hair was inch or two longer than everything else. They also didn't give me a mirror to see the back of my head when they were done, which should be standard.

Call ahead to get on the list. Weekend walk-ins can wait up to 1.5 hours, even though there are 10 - 12 stations active at a time. But don't worry, there are plenty of alt weeklies and low circulation/high quality magazines to peruse while you pass the time. Inside what appears to be a large converted auto garage, there's usually a decent CD in the tray and a quiet mix of young hipsters and older been-there-done-that's in the queue. Like any place, the quality of haircut and the suitability of rapport with the barber varies, but once you find one you like, you'll probably be back again. Not bad for $19.

This is one of three Rudy's barbershops -- there one on Melrose and another one on Sunset. The stylists are easy-going and very good, and their own styles let any customer know there's someone who can cut his or her hair - no request is too difficult. It's best to call ahead of time as the wait can be long. But there are plenty of magazines and usually a variety of people there to hold your interest.

Rudy's takes no appointments and they are all the way in Hollywood, but the three haircuts I've had there have been among the best haircuts I've ever had, and continued to look good for several weeks. I have never had to wait more than 10 minutes for a stylist (I go on Saturday mornings). A woman's haircut is only $26. Strange ambiance (very Hollywood). Loud 1980's soundtrack playing.

such a cute salon in a great location (up and coming artsy silverlake) the price is VERY RIGHT ($28 for a cut and style..but cheaper if you don't need the style) no reservation needed and you'll love the atmosphere...they turned a old automotive garage into a "barber shop" great for men and women

Despite being "only 19 bucks", if 2 (count em TWO) stylists can't cut in a straight line, then I would consider it overpriced. I went and got a trim, left with one side an inch longer than the other. Went back the next day to get it fixed, and saw another stylist. That stylist, although much nicer than the previous, "fixed" my uneven-ness. When I got home, I realized that my hair was, yes, still 1 inch longer on one side. I finally took scissors to it myself and fixed it. Waste of money, in my opinion. You are paying for the bragging rights of going to the hippest place in town.

IT'S ONLY 19BUCKS and the name is Rudy's Not "Chez-Rudy's", this is the east-side not the West-side Baby! Yes, the wait is long because the stylist are good but they arn't there to cater to you like in Bev Hills. No frills so Don't expect more than 20mins on a cut. The haircut is as good as you can describe it and just saying "Short" wont help because the stylist arn't mind readers. So if you can't verbalize what you want, bring a picture. Don't you dare go to the chair not knowing what you want cuz thats what you should have figured out while you were waiting. The cheap price of the haircut DOES NOT INCLUDE A CONSULTATION. If you don't want to wait more than an hour call ahead and get on the waiting list. If you need an appointment go somewhere else and pay the premium!

Pros: Inexpensive, NO FRU FRU, Fast Service

Cons: NO AIR CONDITIONER, Wait time

In the early 90's, I regularly went to Rudy's in Seattle on Pine street for a flat top. I'm a woman, so it was nice to get a flat top with no conservative attitude. My experience today at Rudy's at 4451 Sunset evoked my other Rudy's experiences: the folks working there were low key and not unfriendly. The service was good. I got a great haircut and it was exactly what I had asked for. I went Friday at 11am and was out the door in 20 minutes (I have a chin length shag).

If you want to go somewhere with servile staff, go elsewhere. The other gripers on this list don't have much credibility with me. It's not surprising that a popular place is going to have a long wait during peak hours. And you can get a bad haircut anywhere.

I went to Rudy's and waited forever...then this evil "stylist" (ha-ha) comes over and I asked for 2 inches cut off...she cut off my hair into a mullet...I was so upset...I ran ot of there and cryed for hours. So my girlfriend gave me the number to her stylist Janet (she only does house calls) and she fixed it into a real haircut!!! I called the manger, he was so rude...and offered me a free shampoo....Please.

Don't waste your time or money. I admit, the $20 price tag is appealing, but it's not worth the hassle. Also, if you want a good haircut, your'e definitely not going to get it here. The stylists are moody, snootty, and very unprofessional.
After six months of growing out his hair, my boyfriend eagerly went to Rudy's to get a "trim." He left the salon with 5 months of growth chopped off, hair all over his face and clothes, a major disappointment, and a major headache. Please, save your $20 and go elsewhere. It's not worth the headache.

P.S. The next day the nice people at Goodform fixed his hair.

At $19 for a basic cut, you pay twice as much as the low-brow places like Supercuts -- but it's worth it. With the right stylist, you get a $40 cut for half the price. These guys specialize in cutting the trendy, unkempt set -- so be specific if you don't want to look like an aspiring actor when you leave. Also, Rudy's is not a place to bring the kids since Hustler and other venerable publications are available for review on the magazine rack. Call ahead and put your name in if to avoid the wait.

Rudy's IS loud, and it's cheap; part of it's sordid appeal. It's always chock full of 'los feliz tragically hip'. an entire 20'+ high wall of images of half/fully naked pretty people with crazy hair stare back at you while you sit there getting a new fancy chop-chop. The two hair stylists I have experienced have been great, chatty but not blabbering, talented and helpful. I think the receptionists may have lost their tolerance for individuals expecting fast food type experiences [in/and/out quickly and cheaply]. that's pretty understandable. people usually mirror how they're being treated.

Get ready to wait for hours...for a not so great haircut...supposedly you can't make reservations, but I was scolded when i just showed up for a haircut by the unfriendly counter lady..."why didn't you call...you should have called..." ...whatever. There are other places to get an inexpensive haircut, where you won't feel like crap when you leave the salon. Also, the music is too loud and the lighting is absolutely hideous...an all around ugly experience.
