Do NOT use this title company for anything! If I could give them negative stars, I would.

They caused me to lose a $10,000 California New Home Tax Credit and are only offering $500 in compensation after months of dragging their feet.

I bought a new home last year and used Old Republic as my title company. All the paperwork seemed to be in place and they wrote an email and stated in writing that they had faxed the California New Home Tax Credit Application #3528 to the California Franchise Tax Board.

But the CA FTB never got it and did not allocate the $10,000 tax credit under my SS#. They said that they could review my case if we provided a fax confirmation sheet from the Old Republic.

The Escrow Officer that I dealt with Ida Maciel was very friendly and nice when I met her. But she was utterly useless when I asked her to provide the fax confirmation sheet from when the application was supposedly sent. She never called back, rarely responded to email and would take days to get me any info.

Even though I was EXTREMELY frustrated with this whole situation that had dragged out for months (and I had to file an extension for my 2009 taxes), I remained extremely courteous and nice whenever I emailed or spoke to Ida on the phone because I am very non-confrontational (Asian upbringing, I guess).

And then it turns out that when they retrieved my file from their warehouse in Oakland where they keep all their records, there was no fax confirmation sheet in it which all files do. They were not able to provide any other proof that they sent the fax but a letter stating so which the CA FTB rejected. Ida said that she would consult their Escrow Operations Manager but I didn't hear back from her at all. She started avoiding my phone calls and never replied to any of my emails.

In the end, I had to call the Escrow Operations Manager directly and turns out that he didn't even have my file and Ida had not told him anything. But he (David Ziel) was extremely rude and did not even let me explain the whole situation. I asked him to look into it and next thing I know, they escalated it to their Legal department.

I had to get my real estate agent to deal with their Legal person as I could not even stand talking to these folks anymore. After some discussion, they are offering me $500 in compensation for the trouble but still do not admit fault.

This was a total slap in the face as I have lost a $10,000 tax credit due to the fact that they did not submit the application for me nor provide proof that they did with the fax confirmation sheet which the CA FTB needs.

DO NOT TRUST THIS COMPANY!!!
