Dar Maghreb

Message from Dar Maghreb

Faux Moorish palace treats guests to Moroccan delicacies and belly dancing.
  • Private rooms
  • Recreated 15th century palace
  • Belly dancing nightly

The Dar Maghreb has recreated for you the memorable adventure of being invited into a rich Moroccan house for dinner. Your waiter will perform the traditional hand washing ceremony and then have you sit back comfortably against the pillows all around to enjoy a traditional Moroccan feast. As it would be in Morocco, our feast is comprised of vegetable salads and lentil soup, followed by B'Stilla--a mixture of chicken, eggs, toasted almonds wrapped inside a very thin pastry shell, baked with butter and sprinkled with powdered sugar and cinnamon. After this you will have the choice of two main courses. When you are seated at your table your waiter will explain to you about the fascinating ancient customs of Moroccan dining.

Editorial Description by Citysearch
In Short
Thick pillows ring low tables, and a belly dancer periodically drifts by, moving to pounding Middle Eastern music. Waiters in velvet pantaloons perform a traditional Moroccan hand-washing ceremony on diners. The six-course set-price menu begins with starters like herb-flecked lentil soup, couscous and cold seasoned vegetables. Entrees include crispy roasted quail, garlicky shrimp and b'stilla--shredded chicken and almonds wrapped in phyllo dough.

Belly dancing fun!  5 Star Rating - World class

By Debbie R. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 8,156

This is an awesome place! It's morrocan. You sit on pillows at low tables and they bring you your courses one at a time. Food is DELICIOUS!!! It's really fun when the belly dancers come by and make you dance with them.

Very Fun Restaurant -- Great Experience  4 Star Rating - Very good

By Joan K. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 11,858

this is fun and different -- sit on pillows in an indian palace -- with belly dancers!! - They pour the yummy mint tea from high about the table! There is basically a preset dinner experience -- I thought everything was really good and it was fun to try all the different dishes -- you eat with your hands! Great place for a birthday --

Fun for a special occassion, good food, watch the pricey wine list  3 Star Rating - Satisfactory

By Robert G. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 6,764

I have to agree with almost everything Gavin said in his review. The food is really very good. Its a bit messy at time, but that adds to the experience.

The actual price for the food isnt too bad, around $40 a head. The wacky pricing comes when you order wine. They have a very nice wine list, but everything is marked up almost double what you would find anwhere else. Might be better to stick to the beer, which is less expensive and goes better with the food anyway.

Get one of the private rooms if you are having a birthday party or other special event. Its a really fun experience to do with friends. But probably not something you would do too oftern

PROS: Good food, really fun for special events and big groups
CONS: VERY expensive wine list, food can be too messy

Expensive! moroccan food  3 Star Rating - Satisfactory

By Gavin W. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 344

This is an upscale Moroccan restaurant. On food alone, this place deserves 4-5 stars, but the price per person is outrageous! To spend around 60 per person to eat with your hands just seems to be a bit much. I realize this is how you're supposed to eat the food, and it's delicious food, but it just seems like you're working hard to get very little. Half the food ends up on the table. When they pour the tea, they do it from high up, which may look cool, but the tea goes everywhere. I don't get it.
They also serve fresh fruit at the end--but it's unpeeled! Why am I paying so much to peel my own fruit! As a result, the fruit largely goes untouched, except for the grapes.
The belly dancers are fun the first time, and if you have a large group of people--but if they come around a second time, it's a bit much. The mint tea is excellent, and so was the food, but this screams out a one-time-deal.

PROS: food
CONS: the price! ouch!

Example: great place for good bread 1 Star Rating - Unsatisfactory

By maevictoria

This place needs to be updated. They even give you old towels for a napkin. The food used to be good but now it's horrible. The dancers there look old with skin hanging off them. After the owner died I see that this place is ready to be axed for how can it stay in business? The bread was old and the meat tasted like cafeteria food. There's the same down the block that's cheaper and nice looking dancers called Moon of Tunis.

Pros: better than throwing the money out on the street
Cons: food not good for the money

Food is whatever, but service is terrible. 1 Star Rating - Unsatisfactory

By Nixie7337

We went to this restaurant because my friends teacher was belly dancing there that night. The menu is set and ran about $35 per person. The eggplant salad to start was really good, but when I asked him for a fork or a spoon to eat it with he told me that I was supposed to eat it with my hands, because that was the tradition. Even though all of the tables around us had silverware. He ended up bringing me a spoon, but with attitude. After this incident, he was rude for the rest of the evening, and when he brought the bill, I asked him for change for my $100 bill, and he told me he didn't have change. I was so disgusted at this point, that I couldn't wait to leave. We were 4 girls all together, so we paid with cash, and the balance on 1 girls credit card, he took the bill and asked us if we would be tipping him using this cash or if we were going to put it on the card. He was so rude it was unbelievable. This place looked like it was right out of some village, and they gave you freaking beach towels as napkins, and they keep the bread in a sombrero like basket that EVERYONE in the restaurant puts their hands on to take their own bread. I could go on, and on, but all I can say is that there are a MILLION other restaurants in Los Angeles, that are soooooo much better than this place. I will never go there again.

Pros: Honestly, there are no pros.
Cons: The service, the prices, the cleanliness.

Food- Not So Good 2 Star Rating - Wouldn't recommend

By alissabeth

We went here for New Years and although we had a great time in the company of our close friends, the food was bland and overcooked in general. Even the bread wasn't good. It would have been nice for someone to tell me when I made the reservation that it would be a price fixed meal. We would have preferred to order from a menu and have more choice. I would skip this place if you are looking for good Moroccan food. We also did not love the ambiance-- it was a bit bright for dinner.

Pros: Good for Large Group
Cons: Bad Food

Too many courses of very rich food. 2 Star Rating - Wouldn't recommend

By Maltesers

I loved the interior and the whole look of the place but I have been here twice now with a large group and did not enjoy the experience either time.
There are too many courses and the food is incredibly rich. Some of the dishes are supposed to be eaten with your hands but it doesn't really work in large groups with sloppy sauces! Our group was put in a very dark corner with no lamps or candles and we could not hear the music. I felt that I was paying for lots of food that I did not really want as it is a set dinner.

Pros: wonderful interior with fountain and mosaics
Cons: Set dinner with too many courses
