Taqueria El Sol

Think Boyle Heights and you immediately think of the gargantuan burritos at El Tepeyac. That's fine if you like huge crowds and huge food. If you want good food without the hassle, go to El Sol. Right next to an overpass of the 5, between the Police station and Mariachi Plaza, the crowds have not discovered El Sol. But inside it's fun with lively decor. And the tortas are some of the best in LA.

I love the food but even more I love the design. It's colorful with all the chairs and tables carved intricately with birds and suns and other tropical inspired themes. I admit I don't know the name of the particular area in Mexico this kind of craftsmanship comes from but its truly amazing. Its in Boyle Heights near Mariachi Plaza but alas no mariachi perform here.
