I finally got to Ago last Thursday, and was weary from reading all of the bad reviews before, especially of the staff. From the moment that I arrived, I was greeted by a super nice staff. It did take a little to get a table on the patio, where I could smoke freely, but I didn't mind while I had a fabulous-famous peach martini! Once seated, the wait staff was above any that I've experienced at the best restaurants in town. The waiter even complimented my hair (which I just had done!) and I thought that killing me with kindness, will always work. The veal ravioli was superb & I can't wait to go back again & again! I have Never expected to be so disappointed in any Italian Restaurant anywhere in the country but Especially in a Pretty Popular Ago restaurant owned by Robert De Niro and Supposedly a Great chef Agostino Sciandri in Los Angeles.

We visited Ago on Friday 4/9/2010 with my husband and 2 of our friends. Being from New York and have lived in Italy for a while - I think we have a pretty good idea what Italian food should taste and look like. To be honest - we had pretty high expectations on the quality of the food in this establishment partially because it is owned by a celebrity and also because I understand that this place is pretty popular with Hollywood crowd. Now after a lousy dinner experience we had - I can attribute this popularity to only 2 factors: Since Hollywood crowd doesn't eat much - they have no idea how the proper Italian food should taste like or they do know but still want to support one of their own regardless of the quality.
I am also very surprised that Mr. De Niro will put his name next to the poor quality food like we had in this particular restaurant especially that I have been many times in his Nobu New York (both locations: downtown and 57th street) and Nobu Las Vegas and never had a bad meal there.

I think the Real Food Quality Test for any Italian Restaurant is a quality of their Pasta, Desserts and Coffee. The rest of the menu is very important also but if Italian Chef doesn't know how to make Pasta dishes or Famous Italian Desserts or doesn't have a clue how the Real Black Coffee should taste like - he is in trouble.

So you can imagine how shocked I was when my Meat lasagna arrived and I saw a Shapeless Absolutely Flat Amoebe Look A Like Blob of some substance completely drowned in at least half a can of red sauce... Needless to say I sent it back right away but what important question should be raised here - How can Any self respected Chef - even in Military Canteen - have the audacity to send a customer a plate like this - let alone a Famous Chef and in Famous Restaurant like Ago? It is simply Outrageous!

I was hoping to get pleasantly surprised at least by the end of the meal when we ordered 2 desserts: Napoleon, Apple Tart and Coffee. What can I say? The Napoleon was not Simply Bad - it had NOTHING TO DO with Napoleon! Yes the layers of thick, very heavy dough were there and some kind of a so-called cream was in between them but the Quality! What a horror! I am sure that the quality of Napoleon in a ready made section of any Supermarket chain for $2.00 will be better! And the Apple tart! What a pale, sick and unappetizing example! Sad...

At the end I was hoping to get a nice cup of coffee - I thought at least a simple thing like the black coffee should be up to par in any Italian Restaurant especially that chef has nothing to do with it - the good quality machine and decent brand of coffee should take care of it... But no luck! It was Bad - So Bad that it reminded me of coffee in a college cafeteria - basically tasteless water colored in brown...

In Summary - Sorely Disappointed and Will Never Recommend this Restaurant to Anybody!

We were at this "trattoria" called restaurant and I can't think of anithing good. First when we arrived the manager told us that our table wasn't ready, altough we called in advance and they told us that our table will be ready, after waiting 30 minutes at thye bar, a manager that identify himself as Giuseppe took us to a table, but inside! altough we had reserve outside this giuseppe told us "outside people smoke " and try to scared the rest of the people in my party by talking about how people smokes outside and on. Not only that we sat down in a table we didn't like but also the food was cold but at this point we ate it anyway, do you think that's all? I wish it was, since the waiter provide a lousy service, rolling his eyes everytime we call him and knowing he was not gonna get a good tip he added by hand 20% tip at the bottom of the check we paid and leave. I didn't want to say anything then because my friends were there and I didn't want to argue at that point. of course I will never come back to ago and make sure that all my friends know hat kind of place is this so called fine dining restaurant.

pros: none, the wine expert is not longer there.

The experience is simply not worth the price. The food can either be excellent or chef Boyardee. We had the most perfect Fritto Misto and the worst Spagetti Allo Scoglio. The wine list is lacking and overpriced. We had a Vermentino that was three years old and I am sure it must have been delicious if we had enjoyed it two years ago. The worst however was that we were served by an obnoxious waiter that kept saying "Beautifull", "Wonderfull" practically to himself everytime he came to the table. The busboy must have been instructed to make as much noise as possible when clearing the table and tried to be cute pouring the water like he was performing a Mayan ritual.
No, No, No.

This was not the first time we go, but it will be the last. If I am going to pay top dollar for dinner I am going to drive to Brentwood and go to Vincenti Restaurant where the quality and service is worth the price.

So I was here on New Year's eve and I know, I shouldn't expect much on that night but I could never have dreamt of a worse experience!!! First of all when we called to make the reservation they assured us that they were serving their regular menu. Personally, I think this is the most over-rated restaurant in the universe, the food is marginal normally and WAY over priced but my friend like's it here. When we sat down they handed us a "New Year's Eve" menu. What they essentially did is take a few things off their regular menu and jacked the price up 3x at least. $28 for a green salad???????? I asked our waiter who was seriously, the rudest person I've ever encountered, for a wine list by the glass. He said they didn't have one, which I happen to know is untrue. When I finally got him to admit they do have one he said, "yeah but not tonight" Oh I get it, so you can charge me $30 for a glass of $5 chianti???!!!! What he brought me was undrinkable. Not only did he roll his eyes every time we asked him a question he was actually venomously rude. At the end of this horrendous night I understood why. What did he care, they added 20% tip no matter how many people in your party. One person in our party ordered the salmon, which I'm not sure why being that the smell of bad fish in the entire restaurant was making me gag. When we tried to tell the waiter that it was horrible his response was "well you put sauce all over it" that was to mask the stench!!!! My friend wouldn't let me see the check when it came but I'm sure the curmudgeon didn't take it off the bill. When the desserts came they looked like they had taken them off unfinished plates from other tables. HOW DOES THIS PLACE STAY OPEN?????????

If you are having an occasion that must be perfect and are willing to spend the money, Ago is the place to go. The service is more than first rate and the food is to-die-for. It is expensive but worth every penny for a special night out.

I initially made reservations at IL SOLE for my husband's birthday dinner. However, we were given the "RUSH" at greeting point. We were told that we can only have our table at Il Sole for 1 hour and 15 minutes, which is not enough time to celebrate a birthday with 4 guests. We decided to go to AGO instead and ENJOYED every second of it. From the greeting to the end! We had their soft shell crab special and fritto misto for appetizers, the crab was mouthwatering!!! not overpowering, cooked perfectly! and their Fritto Misto was delicious! not oily, you can taste the squid and chew comfortably. For main course, I had seafood risotto which was nevertheless, a great choice!! my husband had their lamb special, which he devoured! as it was very good! We had a $90 bottle Barbaresco to drink with our food.- PAIRED WELL, thanks to the Somelier... and didn't feel rushed! Our daughter had the Fillet of Sole which was NO WAY NEAR "IL SOLE" Overall, this place is worth the BUZZ! We had a great time and our guest enjoyed the dinner as well. Spent $350 for four - WELL WORTH IT!!!!

This place is a typical LA ?hip? restaurant. The food was very bad quality, same sauce for the lamb and steak! Over cooked and dry steak. Appetizers were decent, especially pasta sampler. The service was so bad and unprofessional. It?s the type of service that you get at a 2 star restaurant; however the manager was very polite and caring. We had a big group of 14 people, came up to be $150 per person, the quality of the service and food was close to a $50 place, so over all I would say a rip off. I won?t go there for the second time, unless I have to for a BD party or something

Wow, I didn't know that pasta could taste this good! I'm not kidding you when I say that I was delightfully surprised with every bite. From the apps to the main course to dessert: everything I tried was STELLAR! It's a rare & welcome occassion that I leave a restaurant in LA thinking, "wow, that was worth every penny!" Perhaps more refreshing was the simplicity of dishes. There are no complicated flavor combinations or frilly garnishes or overly structured presentations at Ago--just phenomenal fare made with fresh ingredients. Great wines & service too.

If you want great food, but would like to be seated 1 1/2 hours after your reservation then this is place for you. I have been to Ago many many times (not by choice my friends don't mind waiting at the bar and checking out the scene for over an 1 hour and as I said the food is great). The host and hostess do not care if you are a regular patron unless you slip them a $50 bill (which did happen on a date and they did sit us right away), which I think is ridiculous especially after spending so much on the food. If you do go the pizza, mushroom risotto, and pasta on the menu is fantastic. The meat and fish dishes are so/so. If you do get the langostinos appetizer (not on the menu you have to special request them), be aware that they are seasonal and can cost you upwards of $60 depending on the day.

I dined alone, experience was great, 6pm on a Saturday, wasn't busy yet, very attentive wait-staff. I read the other reviews before I wrote this and was a bit shocked to see how horrible a time some folks had! It looks like it probably gets really packed, but I was literally the only one in the outdoor dining at 6pm on a Saturday (I was walking by and felt like Italian, never even heard of the place before that). My food was excellent, I had 2 glasses of wine, the mozzarella appetizer with tomatoes (superb) and the veal raviolis... AWESOME.... and priced right for just under $75 bucks with tip. I go out to eat pretty much every night, and I must say this was one of the best times I've had by myself out eating in quite a while (I'm talking all the places in LA... Eat on Sunset, Lucky Devils, the restaurants at the Grove, etc. ... but really, I think it was because the place was basically mine! whoohoooo! Folks started arriving around 7pn though...

If you want to see a movie star, this is the place to go. First of all, it's owned by Robert DeNiro, even though I've never seen him there. My husband and I have dined here a few times and have seen a celebrity each time. And thankfully, not Paris Hilton or someone like that. The food is sensational and the service of the dining room staff is five star! They specialize in typical Italian dishes. If you dine here, go all out! It's about $175 for two people, but includes appetizer, salad, entree, wine, and dessert. It's definitely a place to take your sweetie to for special occasions.

I absolutely do not recommend this restaraunt. I made reservations for 14 people on a friday night for my wife's birthday, and I was told that it's too many people to have individual orders, that instead it will be "family style" and that I will be explained the details of this when we get there. To me, family style means you order a bunch of courses and everyone shares. Oh contrare. No one explained to me what it meant or how much it would cost. They said something about having caprese, calamari, pasta, steak and fish. I told the waiter that we probably wouldn't want steak and fish, next thing I know they start bringing the food. We never even saw the menu. Of course we had a couple of vegetarians, one person with extensive food allergies, and had to notify the waiters who never asked. At the end of the night they stuck us with a $1400 bill with a high tip. It would have been nice to know what we were getting into from the getgo. The worst part, however, is that they overcharged my credit card and I had to go through the math with them twice! as they overcharged it AGAIN, then FINALLY got it right the third time after I got upset. When I told the manager, he basically didn't care and said that most of the food was eaten so it's worth the price. Now my credit card company is calling me because they never cancelled the first two charges and are essentially charging my card three times the price. Now I have to get back in touch with this restaraunt to ask them to cancel the original charges. I've never seen such poor, disgraceful, horrible treatment of customers in my life and I will NEVER go back to this establishment.

My boyfriend flew all the way out from New Jersey for a special Valentine's Day. He chose Ago for a special romantic Italian dinner. The experience was not romantic, nor special. I felt so bad that he had spent the airfare for such a miserable evening. Even with reservations, we had to stand at the crowded bar, elbow room only, waiting 30 minutes, only to be seated in a corner next to the outdoor dining section. It was so cold we could not take off our coats. I think I saw the waitor twice, once to take our order breifly, while ignoring our questions and running off. We did not see him again until he dropeed the check on the table. The items on the pre-fixed menu were vague, and very non-elegant. We ordere the mixed fried fish. Yes.. fried fish. Couldn't tell you what was in the mess. For dinner, i had the ribeye steak, which was 90 percent grizzle. After eating the two bites of edible steak, we really just wanted to leave. 15 minutes later we were able to get the check... from the busboy! AND the neglectful waitor had taken the liberty to WRITE IN a 20% tip on the $140 credit card receipt! Isn't that illegal? Ago may be decent on "non-holidays", I would not know. But if you're looking for a romantic special dinner with a loved one, I would not reccomend this one !

Cons: no parking, bad service, over priced, poor food.

Pros: Great Patio. Romantic! Peach Martini's from Heaven

Cons: Wait staff all have a perhaps false Italian Accent.. but hey roll with it !

I read so many negative reviews about this restaurant and they were all wrong. Must have been submitted by a bunch of savages looking for California Pizza Kitchen...or should I say CPK...instead of an amazing, authentically italian dinner. Pricey for sure but we were treated like a king, queen and prince. Terrific. Americans and weird tacky eurotrash looking for 600 pound plates of food served with a craven, hooters-esque suburban "flair", please stay far, far away.

I was in town for a few days and we made reservations for Ago's well in advance. When we arrived we were told there would still be a 20 minute wait. We requested the patio and they tried to shuffle us into the main dining room which was so loud you have to shout to hear anyone. We were put in a back corner of the patio that you have to wedge yourself into. When we were finally served it was by a very rude French server who acted like were were a bother. Maybe we were interrupting his failed Hollywood acting career who knows? We paid way too much for risotto which was about $24 bucks. Bottom line: if you want to pay a ton of money, get treated poorly and like it..then this is your place!

We recently dined at Ago for a friend's birthday. We had actually dined there the week before and had a wonderful time. Unfortunately, our friend's brithday was dampered by the waiter insulting us by automatically filling in and totaling the gratuity on our credit card receipts. While most people do expect an automatic gratuity for large parties, they also expect to see it posted on the menu. You can imagine our surprise when the bill came and it only said "%" with an amount totaled at the bottom. We had to do the math oursleves to figure out that we were automatically gratuitized 20% on the final bill (including tax). On top of that when we split the bill with multiple credit cards, the waiter wrote in the tip and totaled it. The last time I checked the only person that can fill in the total and sign is myself. We were all completely insulted and felt that the waiter and management practices were misleading and borderline fraudulent.

My questions is: "Mr. DeNiro, how would you feel if someone wrote in your tip for you?"

Ago's needs to learn to treat parties of 5 women as well as they treat the stars and celebrities that dine there.

A couple of months ago we had a reservation for 8:30 and they did not seat us till almost 10PM. I begged for a round of free drinks for us girls while we were waiting at the small bar, they finally gave in.

When the table was available they insisted to seat us in the back room. A definite no no for 5 beauties who wanted to be in the main dining room for the buzzy atmosphere of the place- it's not the food that makes it 100 percent.

When the food came it was sub par- On my order the salad was good, the Salmon should of been return ed straight back to the kitchen. And it was cause if was highly under cooked.

Perhaps they should think twice and treat people as equals, because they do not know that the person who is not a celebrity- may be the behind the scenes person who is responsible for that celebrities career.

As well the service could be better as well as the noise level.

can't believe this restaurant is still around... if you like drinking wine from a cracked wine glass (with no apologies from staff) and like eating very bad food, keep going to Ago. if you like rude, rushed service, Ago's your place. have to say that it was good once... but that seems like a very long time AGO!

I went to Ago last week with a two girlfriends to celebrate one of their birthdays. My friend had heard about this place so we finally tried it. Can you say amazing? We had to wait a bit for our table and eventually we were sat in the wine room. This is in the back of the restaurant and kind of removed from the "scene". I asked that we be moved to a different table and after about 10 minutes, they moved us to the main dining room. We each had an appetizer (each were amazing...the tuna tartar special was excellent) and our entrees were fantastic. We had rigatoni with pancetta and the ravioli with ricotta and spinach. We were all amazed as to how good the food was. I would go back here in a heartbeat...actually, we have reservations for next Wednesday!

Try and get the main dining room or patio...the wine room is quiet and it's where they sit the kids.

Went to celebrate our cousin's graduation from high school for lunch and found Ago to be the perfect place! Great for groups. The waiter was extremely knowledgeable and helpful in picking our food. The ambiance was great-out on the patio in perfect summer weather.

The food arrived hot, fresh and full of flavor. Would recommend Ago for an intimate evening for two or a group celebration (seems that some of the complaints about service could be related to regular Friday or Saturday night rush, which we avoided by a weekday lunch).

The mushroom risotto was wonderful, the steak was so tender you could cut it with a fork. The halibut special with pureed sunchokes was light and exquisite, perfectly cooked. The papadele with lamb ragou was a special of the day and was wonderful. For dessert we all shared a dessert sampler and everything was to die for. All in all the experience was perfect! We'd definitley go back and highly recommend it.

A friend made a reservation for us to dine at AGO. After reading the reviews I was a little concerned. It appears that it does not receive great reviews. I myself had a great experience. We entered the restaurant and were greated with a smile from the hostess. We were promptly seated at our table(It was 7:30 on a Tuesday). The restaurant was very busy. The waiter was very friendly and had a great Italian accent. The appetizers were very good. I ordered gnocchi although ravioli was delivered to the table. When presented with their error the waiter took care of it with a smile. The food was excellent. I highly recommend the gnocchi! The dessert was fantastic. I had the strawberries and cream. Overall it was a pleasant experience and I would go back.

Sadly, some of the worst serice i've ever had in los angeles. For a restaurant with those kind of prices and that ambiance, it was incredibly dissapointing. Service was indifferent, inattentive and when anyone actually stoped at the table they were simply rude.

Long waits to sit down even if you have a reservation.

OK, here's how it works at AGO. You make a reservation and you show up on time. They tell you to grab a drink at the bar while your table is coming up. In the meantime, the regular customers (that look like the m a f i a) come in, tip the guy at the front and go straight to the first table eventhough they don't have a reservation.

Our reservation was at 8pm. They sat us down at 9:30 pm. The staff is quite rude as well. Always telling you another 15 minutes to calm you while hours are passing by.

So expect to wait a long period before you sit down.

Heard good things and Ago is around the corner from where we live, so we gave it a try. Service was exceptional and the food was even better. I had the vegetable risotto and my fiance had the filet mignon and we split a pizza for an appetizer. The drinks were very good too. I highly suggest dining at Ago if you have a chance.

When we got to Ago, it was fairly empty. We had requested a table on the patio, but they tried to seat us inside. When we argued, the host went on about how outside is really a cigar smoking section. Finally, he seated us outside - we didn't see a cigar the entire time.

The waiter was very distracted and when he listed the specials, he said, "we can make risotto with truffles or chanterelles." I ordered the risotto with truffles. I know from expereince that truffles are expensive, and truffle risotto can get as pricey as $45. That was okay; this was a special occasion. I was shocked to receive the bill and see the dish cost $95. The restaurant had no remorse about not telling us the price in advance (a common practice in even the finest restaurants is to warn the customer), saying, "Sometimes customers get angry when we tell them." So, bad service from the host, slow service from the waiter (plus he forgot one dessert entirely) and $95 for risotto (come on - it's just a bowl of rice!) and we will not be returning to Ago.

The first time my husband and I went to Ago we had a decent meal and enjoyed the experience. We decided to go back and take our out of town guests there on a Saturday night. The food was below average and the servise was horrendous. My husband ordered the Chilean sea bass special, which was awful! After sending it back for some simple pasta, we waited over a half hour for his meal. The table was cleared, the group waited 30 minutes, (asking where his food was multiple times) he finally got his pasta. The waiter was rude about the entire situation. To top off the horrible experience - we were charged for his meal! I would not recommend anyone to go to the overrated restaurant. There are so many better places in this town!!!!

I went for dinner on a Tuesday and the restaurant and bar area were so packed I couldn't hear my friends across the table. But apparently that's why you go to Ago. The restaurant is small and warmly decorated, and the wait staff is pretty attentive, though not necessarily friendly. The food is very expensive, but there are the rare deals thrown in. "It's a rich-man, poor-man type of food," Chef Agostino says on the restaurant's Web site, and he's right. The $12 Zuppa del Golfo soup (like cioppino) I ordered had a delicious flavor and was so laden with tender chunks of salmon and other types of seafood (honestly, the best seafood I've ever had) that I couldn't eat my entree. I'll just get that next time!

For such a swanky, scenester-type place and the prices of the food here, you would think the quality would match - and it did, the first time I went to Ago. However, the second time a couple of weeks ago was the exact opposite. I brought an out of town friend to this restaurant on her one night free from work, which I regretted. Appetizers were so-so and the pasta dishes were VERY salty, so much so that she sent her plate back.

Our simpatico waiter did hook us up with an amazing dessert plate (the best part of the meal), but if you're going to drop $80-$100 on a meal, everything should be up to par.

My daughter and I had dinner here and were very disappointed. We were seated and waited on promptly until someone more important arrived. I ordered a house salad that was so heavy on the dressing that the lettuce was "wet". My main entree was veal picata. There were four small pieces of veal and a "pile" of cooked spinach. The veal was moderatly warm to cold, so I sent it back. It was obviously microwaved because when it was served to me again, the veal was about as tough as shoe leather. The waiter really lost interest us because he had "more important" clients to serve, i.e. some Hollywood mogul. The presentation was awful - who serves a pile of cooked spinach with veal? They must have a chef that doesn't know much about food presentation. And what's with the 80's disco music playing in the background??

I go to Taste often and I've always wanted to try this place next door. The ambiance is nice, nothing too extravagant or overly hip but just right. All the desserts are on this table you have to walk by, so cover your eyes if you are on a diet! Haha. Our server was awesome, his recommendations were on point and the food came out in around 10 minutes. The swordfish I had was right in the sweetspot between tender and firm and the spinach was great. I am on a diet so I can't comment on the desserts, but they looked really good. Overall a great dinner. Nothing too over-the-top, but a place you can visit back often.

This is not the place to take someone you want to impress with conversation. The people watching is amazing...with or without a celebrity sighting. The lobster risotto was tasty...could have used a bit less olive oil, the beet salad was great and not a typical menu item. The best was Francesco, our waiter! We were seated directly in front of the dessert table so we saw everyone and everything. Francesco could not have been more attentive or charming. Next time I will ask to sit on the patio to see if it runs at a slower pace.

This is possibly the worst Italian restaurant in Los Angeles. Prior to being seated, had to sift thru the crowded bar to get a drink... Drinks were good, however once we were seated at a cramped table with my girlfriend; we proceeded to eat a 3 course meal in less than an hour? Rushed? YES! They must prepare all of their food, because our food was delivered within 2 minutes of ordering, and taken away before I could even finish... I had the Lamb-shank special, which was on top of risotto which tasted like macaroni and cheese, enough said Absolutely terrible, save your money!

Holiday dinner. 7 close girlfriends. Four of us arrived late. Offered to wait for second table as first group already seated. They insisted we squeeze with first group so remain together. Before apps ordered, tray of red wine spilled down side of my head. Wearing cream cashmere sweater. Matching wrap on chair. Contents of handbag soaked. Clearly needed to go home, rinse hair, change, maybe make it back for dessert. Returned. Gave waiter/spiller hug to alleviate his embarrassment. Nearby diners actually applauded. Had dinner alone as friends had one last drink. Two separate bills arrived. THEY CHARGED ME FOR MY DINNER, but oh-so-kindly removed one of my drinks and an app.!!! Insult to injury, those two items WERE FOUND ON THE OTHER GROUP'S BILL!!! Tried to explain situation to manager. Looked at me as pest and repeatedly interrupted by saying, "Are you done?" It gets worse, but word limit reached.
