I've had great experience here with my dog. The doctors saved her life and continue to offer her great treatment. The technicians are friendly and the desk staff has gotten much better in the past few years. My dog was not eating and had no energy. The vets were able to diagnose her condition and get her up on her feet within a few days. I'm very happy with the personal service of a small facility.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE UNLESS YOU WANT YOUR PET TO DIE A SLOW PAINFUL DEATH IN THE HANDS OF A NEGLIGENT VET!
First they killed my dog, then they cleaned out the file to remove the data about his real syptoms and replaced it with false info that was completely untrue and impossible to believe, give his condition! These hacks killed my dog and dragged out his death to make money. CLEAR vetinary malpractice.
I brought my dog in because he had all the syptoms I saw online for diabetes. The doctor did 500$ worth of tests and kept telling me my dog had a urinary tract infection . The test results took forever. Even when they came back the doctor still denied that my dog was diabetic and kept giving me antibiotics and showing me how to force him to eat by putting food on the inside of his lip. Eventually I ended up at another vet who asked that the test results be faxed over. He freaked out and started yelling at these foolsfor being negligent. He was telling him that he shouldnt be practicing medicine on animals. He said the doctor was an idiot to look at test results that show high blood sugar and ketosis and not realize the animal was diabetic as I originally suspected. He sent a diabetic dog home with ANTIBIOTICS! For weeks my dog suffered under the care of these jerks. The vet I went to told me I should SUE this idiot for vetinary malpractice. I went back months later to get my dogs file folder. They had removed the actual paperwork that showed what his syptoms were and replced it with a blank page that said "vomiting". This was completely false and done to cover their butts. My dog never vomitted. He wasnt eating food and he was peeing clear urine frequently. My dog died a slow painful death of ketosis and dehydration because of this place. STAY AWAY FROM HERE IF YOU WANT YOUR DOG TO LIVE!

I wonder what would happen to doctor who sent a diabetic human home with antibiotics and not insulin to treat diabetes, then hid his malpractice and denials of diabetes by removing all data from that persons medical file?
The sad part is, I had it right when I came in the door after googling his syptoms. THEY told me I was wrong and I stupidly believed them. DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID! I have to live with that guilt and it hurts to know I failed to do right by my loving dog and friend. He was a quality pal and he deserved better.

Because of CLEAR vetinary malpractice, my dog died a slow painful death at the hands of their negligent incompentent and dishonest hacks. First they killed my dog, then they cleaned out the file to remove the data about his real syptoms and replaced it with false info that was completely untrue and impossible to believe, give his condition! I brought my dog in because he had all the syptoms I saw online for diabetes, clear and frequent urination, weight loss no energy not eating anything. The doctor did 500$ worth of tests and kept telling me my dog had a urinary tract infection . The test results took over a week and he never even looked at them anyway. Even when the results came back the doctor still denied that my dog was diabetic and kept giving me antibiotics and showing me how to force him to eat by putting food on the inside of his lip. Eventually I ended up at another vet who asked that the test results be faxed over. The new vet freaked out and started yelling at the old vet for being completely negligent in the treatment of this animal. He was told him that the high blood sugar (485) was diabetes and kidney failure was ketoisis that was slowly and painfully killing my dog. He told him that he shouldnt be practicing medicine and that he was an idiot to look at test results that show high blood sugar and ketosis and not realize the animal was diabetic (as I originally suggested). He yelled at the idiot for sending a diabetic dog's owner how home with ANTIBIOTICS, not insulin!! For weeks my dog suffered under the care of these jerks. The vet I went to told me I should SUE this idiot for vetinary malpractice. I went back months later to get my dogs file folder. I still frequent Stanford Pet Clinic even though the days of Dr. Mell are over. I've noticed that since Dr. Mell has retired there have been some changes at Stanford Pet Clinic. They've merged with another pet hospital and there are some new faces but I've also noticed that some of the old staff and doctors are still there. That's good to see and they still give very good quality care care to my pets. I know the prices have changed a bit also but are still very competitive and I will still keep bringing my pets there because they care about my animals (my doggie loves to board there!)

Dr. Mell was vet to my various cats and dog for the past 29 years. I guess you can say I've been spoiled, and expect every vet, and every veterinary employee to be as wonderful as Dr. Mell and his staff were. And while I certainly don't begrudge his retirement, the resulting transformation of the Stanford Pet Clinic is just awful: A corporation that cares only about the bottom line ... and they're not even gracious enough to try and disguise their money grubbing ways just a little. For the past year I have tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, and hope things improve. To say that the reception staff is disinterested/disengaged would be an understatement. The two vets who seemed like they might work out ok, Dr. Droke and Dr. Fairchild, are no longer there. And there's no telling what vet will be available when. I absolutely cannot recommend this pet clinic. I'm sadly in the market for a new vet ...

For decades Dr Mell provided a good service at reasonable prices. Now a corporation has taken over and prices have increased 200 to 400%. When you question the management you are told if you don't like it go away. Well the corporation is a public company and may be their stockholders need to take a hard look at how the business is being run, their stock has already lost 60% of its value and customers are finding other vets!

after visiting them for 2 years, I decide to stop visiting them anymore. Because when I called them and would like to get a quote for a small procedure, they overcharged me a lot. A lot! I ended with calling different pet clinics around this area and found much more reasonable quotes.

If you care about your pets, and do not want to be robbed, stay away from Stanford Pet clinic.

Dr. Mell was my Vet from the early 70's thru '85 and then I moved to Georgia with my 4 dogs and 2 cats. He "pawned" many pets off on me during that time! I loved him as a person, a friend, and a Vet.
I was thinking of him today and came to find an e-mail address to send him a note when I found that he had retired.
I know that he and Renee will love their retirement but the Bay Area will truly miss him for the care of their animals. He was truly "one of a kind" and a true human being.
I love you Dr. Mell!!

Dr. Mel's staff are unorganized and occasionally rude. My cats, which I adopted from Dr. Mel, were misdiagnosed with URI two times. The third time I took them in, I insisted for a thorough exam. URI is common among kittens. I was also charged for a test that I did not require or request. More professional clinics notify the client before charging (i.e. Adope Animal Hospital). I am upset about my negative experience at the Stanford Pet Clinic.

For over 30 years, I have taken my animals to Dr. Mell. You would be hard pressed to find a human more caring about animals. While in town the other day, I stopped by to visit Dr.Mell, only to find that he was retired and that the business had been sold. I was so surprised and when I got back to the car I cried. A loss for Palo Alto, but the excitement of retirement for Dr. Mell...

Dr.Mell, thanks for all the years of friendship and thanks for all the wonderful animals I have adopted through you over the years. You weren't just a vet, but became to me like a 2nd Dad. For that, I thank you.
UPDATE: Malcolm kitty that you gave me 15 years ago had to be put down in August. He lived to be a ripe ol' 20 years old. What a great cat. He is definately missed. Dr Mel, you got me to like cats, so in memory of Malcolm, I am adopting an orange and white cat, just like Malcolm. Dogs are doing wonderfully!

Dr. Mell was a great vet to my two dogs. They had from routine shots, dental care and even surgery there. I have never had a problem with him or his very courteous staff. He was always willing to see a sick pet or a worried owner. He was matter of fact and did not stick it to you with high vet bills. I just found out he is retired. The new vet would only see my dog on a drop in basis, meaning I had to leave her there all day just so she could see her when she had time and then go back to get the dog. Not worth the drive from SJ to PA for that. I will be going elsewhere and already miss Dr. Mell Beryl who just retured a month ago!

I have taken 5 cats and 3 dogs to Dr. Mell for (count 'em) ~26 years with more than satisfactory results, so am surprised to read the two negative reviews below, yet I suppose all vets can make mistakes at times. On his behalf I will say that he was an excellent diagnostician, this being both my and others' experience - these were mostly people I had met spontaneously at the dog park, swimming at the "Y", etc. (not people I had referred to him). And I have a friend who took a rabbit to him years ago, and he solved something another vet could not (I hear rabbits are not easy to work with/have delicate health issues in general). We will miss you Dr. Mell!

I met the new doctor recently (Dr. Fairchild), and my general assessment is she is bright, knowledgeable, opinionated, but really very kind and compassionate towards animals. She explained things very well on a layman's level, yet talked very fast and some of the info was hard to absorb. Probably a bit conservative possibly ordering more tests than necessary (I'm of course comparing her to Dr. Mell, the only vet I've ever gone to), yet I feel this is probably not to make more $$s but more likely because she doesn't have lots of experience yet, and is being overly cautious. Still, that costs money and can be stressful to an animal. When leaving I overheard another client incredulously asking in a rather loud, untrusting voice, "You mean YOU'RE taking over for Dr. Mell??", so she is trying to live up to another's legacy right now, not easy I'm sure. So to tell you the truth, I haven't fully made up my mind, but feel she holds promise. I can see she and Mell have some differing philosophies, and he's the only vet I've ever been to, so I feel I need to give her a few visits more to fully decide. The vet techs there are all great and a real "team", and they still remain. I want to support them all in their efforts and continue there at least for now, and just see how things go.

Dr. Mell was a superb vet who loved our and everyones pets and gave great care. He has unfortunately retired and the new vet is terrible. The new vet is the weekend vet and I'm sorry to say I wasnt impressed. On top of that, when I was 10 mins late for an appointment for something as simple as a heartworm check she made me reschedule. Clearly, all my human and other healthcare providers show more flexibility and I wont be going back after a two year relationship with the clinic.

Dr. Mell did not tell me there was any urgency in dealing with my severely limping rabbit. I believe this was because he was about to go on vacation. I did end up going to another vet (Adobe Animal Hospital in Los Altos). They x-rayed the leg and diagnosed a broken leg which he quickly had surgery for. Turned out the surgery was very hard - because we waited so long! Several weeks after the surgery, the fracture is healed but he will likely limp the rest of his life - because we waited so long (according to the Adobe vet). Definitely go to Adobe for rabbits!

A local city animal shelter told me in confidence (so I won't identify them) that they have heard other complaints about Dr. Mell for rabbit care.

I joined this site just to give Dr. Mell another glowing review. I have been going to him for about 3 years and have spent much time visiting the kittens he has for adoption in the spring. He and his staff are animal lovers and have always given me and everyone I have seen there excellent service. I've had both last minute visits and a surgery that he fit in at the last minute. I coldn't be happier and highly recommend Stanford Pet Clinic. Just stop in and see all the pictures they have of their satisfied clients (two and four legged) pinned up.

PROS: Everything. There isn't enough space to list them all!
CONS: None

We've taken out cats to Dr. Mell for their 2+ years of life so far and have enjoyed Dr. Mell and his staff. We've had urgent eye care needs and were accomodated very quickly. Also good with annual visits- just a warm caring environment.

Dr. Mell has been taking care of my cocker spaniel for 3 years now. He has helped my 14-year-old dog through many ailments. I appreciate his common sense and vast experience. A good friend of mine has been taking her pets to Dr. Mell since the 1970's. The office staff are helpful and friendly. I have had to make a few last-minute end-of-day appointments and they have always welcomed us.

I got my cat as a stray from Dr.Mel 10 years ago and he has been my cat's vet since then. He has been a great friend to my cat and is a great friend to all animals. I always receive excellent care and most importantly, so does my cat. I also have a good friend with many cats who also loves Dr.Mel. The staff are animal lovers too. I love animals and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Dr.Mel to anyone who wants the best for their pet. I would also recommend Dr.Mel for anyone looking to adopt a stray.

PROS: A caring and excellent veterinarian.

A couple months ago, I brought in two bengal kittens whom I had bought from a breeder out of state. I was worried as they looked a little sick and had brownish stuff in their ears, so I brought them in to Stanford Pet Clinic for a checkup. The vet did not seem interested in the condition of the kittens but kept harping on how much I paid on the kittens and on buying them from a breeder. He barely took a look at the kittens and then said they were okay and charged me over $50 for the visit. Later, the cats fell seriously ill and it termed out that they had a serious case of mites and other parasites. This was about a week later. Apparently, the vet did not do his job. I would never go back to this pet clinic again.

I would never go back to this pet clinic again.

.

This is a small neighborhood type place. Dr. Mel is very sweet as is the staff. They board animals here. I boarded a rescue dog here and all the kennels have outdoor runs for the dogs.

PROS: Good location on main street, good parking and nice people.
CONS: None
