Just had my first sandwich there at the recommendation of a friend and I have to agree that if you are looking for an old fashion Deli with quality product, this is the place for you. Sure there are no seats and they close at 5 but I will find a way to go back for more.

Mattern is about as close as you can get to Germany here in Orange. They have fabulous sandwiches and a great selection of German products. There's only about 2 tables to sit at so it's beneficial to get your order to go. They are also closed on Sunday and Monday and are only open til 5 everyday so the hours are limited. But, it's completely worth it to rearrange your schedule to get some of their great meats and cheeses.

Mattern's carries a variety of deli meats, breads, crackers, pastries, candies, and other German goodies. They make sandwiches for takeout, or they have some small tables where you can enjoy lunch. They carry meats like the fantastic bratwurst that is used in the Orange International Street Fair. They even offered to smoke my Thanksgiving turkey for me one year. (I didn't do it since we like traditional roasted turkey.)

They make their own meats that they put through the slicer to put into your sandwich, thus it being soft and juicy. Both their hot and cold sandwiches are amazing. I usually don't like roast beef, but their hot roast beef with sauerkraut is great. The pickles they serve with the sandwiches are great too. A bit sweet and sour but not in any overwhelming way. If you get stumped, ask them, and they'll recommend the type of cheese or whatever to put into your sandwich to make it perfect.

They have a variety of German beers and some American.

They're usually crowded because each staff takes time with you when it's your turn. So go early or avoid lunchtime and weekends.

These are some of the best sandwich's you'll find... the meat is some of the best meat out there.. to boot, the cost is crazy low. I paid under $6 for a sandwich and a drink. Downside is it is very small, and the wait is long. Tried to go in on a saturday for lunch once, and was looking at a 45 minute wait. So plan accordingly.

Give it a try.
