The food, to me, is really yummy. If you go with company & have a good time, you can excuse the rude service. As it's been said, things take forever, which I wouldn't mind much if the servers were nice & attend to your needs.

We??ve been going to sushi house since it was a small sushi bar in South Shore Center. The wait was long then, but even though they tripled the size of the restaurant, it??s still a long wait. Over all the years I??ve visited, I have had mixed experiences-- the proportions of the special rolls are inconsistent and service ranges from average to basic. To avoid the noisy cafeteria atmosphere in the new restaurant, we often do take-out. Tonight, we decided to dine inside since we were told it would only be a 15 minute wait (which predictably became 30 minutes). We saw the waiter twice--- once to take the order, and once to deliver the sushi. Tea and water were emptied and never refilled. I finally waved down our waiter for the check and asked the hostess if she would refill our teas. Before we could finish our tea, bad service turned to outright rudeness. As the waiter cleared our table frantically trying to push us along, he accidently flung rice into my hair. As I tried to finish a conversation with my daughters, he returned to rudely interrupt to ask if I could sign the check and leave since ??so many people are waiting.? If you??d like a relaxing meal where you??re not being rushed to eat and leave, find another place to eat sushi.

This place is totally a joke.

We had to wait a long time to get seated which is not as bad as service. Service was terrible. Servers were mean. NO SERViCE! We had to wait 15 minutes to get more tea and another 15 minutes to get the check.

The food weren't good either. everything is bad.
OH, Yeah, Cheap Rice too.

This place has all the ambiance of the Chicago Stock Yards. The atmosphere is about like a college dorm cafeteria.

This place is really no longer as it used to be when the venue was smaller.

Since Sushi House has moved, it's gone way down hill. I had made reservations and still had to wait 45 minutes to be seated. Once we were seated, waited another 15 minutes for a glass of warm water.

As the years have passed, the quality of the food and service have declined dramatically. Service is really bad and is extremely slow.

There is no quality control. Hard, cheap rice, over-ripened avocados and butchered, over-handled sashimi, and not particularly cheap, either.

We ordered a boat of sashimi and the squid wasn't even cut right, they were all still attached to one another, the uni looked gross, as if it was melting away.

The Scallop Fry was a bit bland, even after liberally applying the sweet sauce and the Donburi was way to spicy.

The Marine Boy Roll was confusing and the fish wasn't fresh at all. I guess that's why it was masked with all these mysterious sauces.

Too much rice on the rolls. They're using the rice to make there rolls look big.

The portion of the rolls are a little smaller now than other places.

The Safeway sushi is better than this place.

If long waits to be seated, poor service, rude employees, no ambiance and over priced food are your cup of tea, than The Sushi House is the place for you.

It's unfortunate that a sushi place that serves such fresh, yummy sushi offers such poor service! I love the sushi but the servers need to take a customer service 101 class to meet the needs of us, the customers! I dread goin there because of the poor service, however, enjoy the sushi very much.

Sushi house has some of the worst customer service I've ever experienced. Sure the food is okay and cheap, but it's still not worth the long waits and rude staff. I tried to make a phone reservation for 12 during their busiest hour and was told to call back later. When i did, the guy on the phone told me he couldn't except my reservation and was rude by saying " well, what's wrong with coming in, signing up, then waiting". it's a business lunch and people cannot wait for 20 minutes before eating - that'd leave them only a half an hour to eat, pay and leave. Also, you'll have to take small sips of water (if you are lucky enough to get some) - the waitresses will ignore you until you are practially choking on your food. I was a long time customer because the view is great and the food is cheap, but I'm not going back after the phone incident. Kamakura and Sakura on Santa Clara Avenue are WAY better in every way.

Pros: cheap food, great view of the beach

Cons: poor customer service, terrible parking, long waits, rude wait staff

I would have tiped 0% but there was a 15% tip automatically added to our bill. The sushi here was ok, but the not worth the price, and to make matters worse the service was horrible. Seriously this wasn't just a bad day I had, read the other reviews.

Pros: Good View, OK sushi

Cons: service, parking, wait time, hidden charges

.

OK if you are young and asian and don't care about waiting for an hour for OK sushi, then this is the place for you.

With a big group of friends, it can be a lot of fun. And you can take a walk on the beach across the street afterwards (or while you wait).

But the sushi is just OK, and the service is a bit less than OK.

Go if you are in a fun mood and want a young, loud scene. Don't go for good sushi.

There was once a time when I could justify tolerating a clueless restaurant staff that does not understand the basics of seating and quality customer service, in order to enjoy moderately priced and average quality fish. However, now that they have raised their prices, there is no real reason for putting up with the extremely long waits and often negligent staff (with the exception of a few stellar ladies who have been there for a while). This establishment has been struggling with its management since day one and now with the increased prices they really need to make some improvements to subsidize the lower economical advantages that used to be it's claim to fame. Maybe the owners should hire a consultant. Oh also try to avoid going in parties larger than four as they have a horrible time figuring out how to accomidate your party and you'll end up waiting even longer than it might seem when reading these reviews.

Pros: Even though prices are on the rise, they are still competitive. Hamachi kama.

Cons: The staff has no idea how to seat people and the restaurant is mis-managed which leads to below average service

My wife and I go there at least once a month. She says I'm crazy but I like to go to Sushi house because I like eating the sushi there. The wait can sometimes take forever though because its always packed.

I have eaten in many different establishments in Alameda, SF and NY and Sushi House is in my top two. The spicy tuna is so fresh and tasty. The edamame is warm. The less common rolls like the Cherry Blossom and the Crazy Monkey are a fresh mix of some old favorites. I hesitate to tell the rest of the bay area how outstanding this restaurant is for fear of never getting a seat!

I guess it's a toss up. Even at 5:30 on the weekends they're busy till 9p,. Try for cold boring days? Lunch before noon is a good time too. A lot of other cheaper sushi places can't match the price, portion, or even the average sashimi quality. I've seen people wait forever for take-out too. I've never had bad service from the busy waiters. I guess it's user discretion. But dont' be discouraged. I still go there, when i've planned in advance to be early.

Coming from LA, I was a little spoiled with the likes of Sushi Nozawa (the sushi nazi) and Katsu-Ya, along with the scores of sushi places in west LA and Studio City -- so I'm a little picky with my sushi. This place had good prices, we ordered a lot and still paid reasonable prices. Some of the sushi was good (salmon and the yellowtail), while the others were decidedly not as "melt-in-your-mouth." We also had to wait a long time just to get a seat on a Friday night, and the service was so-so.

I am a sushi-holic. I've tried them all - Oakland, Berekeley, SF. This truly is the best Sushi I've had. The rolls are PACKED with the most delectable and FRESH fish-alot more than I can say for some of the more "popular" sushi joints around. Their Rainbow roll isn't topped with miniscule nuclear fish portions and doesn't cost fifteen bucks!!. The Lambada and Alameda rolls are simply the best - fresh salmon and sashimi topped ith avocado and fish roe and their special sauce. The flavors just explode in your mouth. Yes, I know it's not authentic Japanese. Well, Burritos are not authentic Mexican, but they're hell of good!! And to all those who whine about the wait and the long lines, don't go when everyone else and their mother are going!! I always try to get there before 6:30 or a late lunch on the weekends. I can't remember the last time I had to wait in line...and I'm there a few times a week. Service? I'm not there to strike up a conversation with the waitress - I'm there to eat great sushi. As long as they take my order and don't mess it up, I have zero problem with their rushed and not super-friendly service. In fact, I'd rather they rushed my order than prance around the dining-room stricking up conversations with everyone.

Late Thursday night, 15 minutes before Sushi House closes at 10pm. I wander in with a friend who almost got us lost. We waited maybe 10 min. We ordered Lion King, Poki, and Webster Rolls (Webster being my favorite). Also started with Hirame (which I have to stop ordering instead of Yellowtail) and Saba (Makerel Yum!). Service was decent, not the place for that personal attention. Overall, it was a good sushi experience that really hit the spot. I would come back again if I was in the area. The place does have a 'cafeteria' feel to it because its so massive. The private room looked fun and the people around us seemed to enjoy their food too. For beginners, I definitely recommend the Lion King (baked salmon CA roll) since its fast becoming their signature roll. Oh, tempura order looked like it had generous portions.

This used to be my favorite place for sushi until my friends and I found mold growing all over the sushi boat last time we went there. When we reported it to the waitress, not only we didnt get an apology, she was just plain rude in repsonding to our concern. So pay attention next time you try their sushi boat.

I tried 3 times to have a positive experience @ Sushi House. It is close to my house and I actually like their sushi for the most part. What I can't stand is the cafeteria-worthy ambiance, the insanely poor service, and the obnoxious waiting process (plan on 45 minutes in a crowded entry with a stack of others.
I have been in the restaurant industry for decades, and this place is unbelievable. I will drive for better sushi from now on. Don't be fooled by the size or crowd, this place is sub-par at best

It's one thing to wait over an hour to be seated or as long to pick up a phone order you've called in with the anticipation of amazing food you just can't get anywhere else. It's quite another to go through all that and to eat at Sushi House. The food is mediocre at best, lacking any and all authentic credibility, and the staff will more than make your wait and experience even less pleasant.

If you're searching in Alameda for mind blowing sushi, Angelfish is THE only place to go. Skip Sushi House altogether, unless the long waits, poor sushi, and lousy service is your thing.

Arrived at restaurant at 3;30 , received menu and were left out on the patio for the next 20+ minutes with no service. When waitress finally arrived, she said we could not order from tghe menu we had been handed because now it was 4 p.m. and only the more expensive dinner menu was offered. We should have walked out then, but because we had enjoyed the food before, went ahead and ordered. No water until we asked for the tthird time. One dinner arrived 'way before other three. A request for another dish from the menu was taken and never delivered. Waitress simpered about being" too busy, oh so sorry" when we complained about the poor service. We had a bill that totalled well over $100 and received service that would make McDonald's blush. Too mamy good sushi places to waste time and $$ here.

i learned not to eat there on weekends. though they moved to a bigger space, they didnt hire more servers. ex. of lousy service & idiotic waitresses: ate there during the week. wait was 20 mins. bc they didnt clear a table. as regulars we knew what we wanted, it took 20 min. to order drinks & 20 to order sushi. i flagged a waitress down & yelled to get her attention to fill my drink. we didnt leave a great tip, & i cant thank the food for being great. outside w/ a sleeping baby, the waitress runs out wanting money for tip. my friend gave $3, but i was PISSED. inside i stood calmly where 3 waitresses ignored me. i demanded the money back & loudly explained what gratuity meant. we were banned, but if you want great sushi w/ a good atmosphere, try Tomadachi in hayward.

i learned not to eat there on weekends. though they moved to a bigger space, they didnt hire more servers. ex. of lousy service & idiotic waitresses: ate there during the week. wait was 20 mins. bc they didnt clear a table. as regulars we knew what we wanted, it took 20 min. to order drinks & 20 to order sushi. i flagged a waitress down & yelled to get her attention to fill my drink. we didnt leave a great tip, & i cant thank the food for being great. outside w/ a sleeping baby, the waitress runs out wanting money for tip. my friend gave $3, but i was PISSED. inside i stood calmly where 3 waitresses ignored me. i demanded the money back & loudly explained what gratuity meant. we were banned, but if you want great sushi w/ a good atmosphere, try Tomadachi in hayward.

Pros: great sushi

Cons: crappy service, too long of a wait, lousy staff

.

I agree with all the reviews listed. The service seriously needs fine tuning: non responsive waitresses, lack of attentiveness, absolute stupidity at times. You ask for water and all you get is air. There is NO customer service. The food is overall good and probably worth it. But SERIOUSLY, if they don't get their act in order, they won't last much longer. You want to go eat and relax not get frustrated. Hey, here's a thought, if a miracle does happen and things start to shape up... maybe the wait won't be so long.

I went on a Monday night, so maybe that's why I escaped the notoriously long wait. I also only experienced half the poor service nightmare of some. Our first waitress came while I was still mulling over the myriad of sushi roll choices. When I wasn't ready, she seemed miffed and never returnred. I flagged the waitress from the neighboring table, who was an angel, and got in my order. Somehow, they forgot my bento box, but I was glad because the sushi was in such large portions (twice the average), the box would've been over-kill. You certainly get your buck's bang. However, the quality isn't top star unlike that of Kitaro (now closed) or Ebisu (in its heyday). My hamachi nigiri, for me the piece de determinacion, was flavorful but chewy, rather than tender and in-mouth-melting compared to the above two restaurants. But overall good at the price.

Great selection of sushi rolls: better than anything else they serve there, (bento, sashimi, udon, and whatnot) Despite LONG wait and reservations not allowed, highly recommended simply for its good sushi!!

The Sushi House proved to be a delightful morsel for my rather expensive therapist to pick apart considering how intolerable incompetence can be. Don't get me wrong, a busy restaurant is a busy restaurant, but even to the most uneducated patron, one can comprehend the saying "First Come, First Serve." To wait 10 minutes for our seating is quite forgivable, but to wait 10 minutes for our water (which we didn't receive), wait another 10 minutes to watch another patron get served before us when we came in first, and to wait another 10 minutes to complain to the hostess who mocks you? I would rather put up with the pimply underpaid undereducated teenager at a drive-through at the Mcdonalds nextdoor! And if you decide to go after a review as bad as this, don't sit at the bar; apparantly this sushi BAR won't let you order from the chef.

Pros: what pros?

Cons: what isnt a con?

Mediocre food, noisy setting, and horrible service. The long wait is bad enough, but listening to waitresses ridiculing their customers in Korean, having to deal with cups and utensils with remnants from the last meal, and a hostess who makes it painfully clear she'd rather be anywhere else makes the experience nothing short of intolerable. Save yourself the trouble!

It doesn't matter what day you go, this place is always crowded. Expect to wait at least an hour for dinner. I'm not sure if it's because there aren't too many sushi restaurants in the East Bay, but this place is way overrated. It's good, don't get me wrong, but not as good as the wait makes it seem. And service is horrible, talk about slow......

Is it good! Yes! Is it worth the 1 hour wait? No!

Sushi House is a place where many UC Berkeley students go. Being that it has large portions for reasonable prices, it really caters to the struggling students' profile. Although they moved to a bigger place, the wait is still amazingly long. Come early, or go during unusual hours. The waitresses can be a little slow, but once you eat the sushi, all the problems seem to subside. A must try is the baked scalloped sushi.

If you like sushi, this is the place for you! Their Lion King Roll and their Bay Scallop Roll melt in your mouth and leave you wanting more. Because there is such a wide selection of items, it'll satisfy a wide array of tastebuds. I don't live anywhere near this place, but I wouldn't mind driving all the way up to nor cal to taste their bay scallop roll. A must try for any sushi lover.

PROS: Bay Scallop Roll and Lion King Roll
CONS: Because there are so many customers, wait tends to be awhile.

The hostess was undoubtedly one of the most unwelcoming and rude hostesses I've ever encountered. We were served our food 45 minutes late. One of the worst dining experiences of my life. Do not be lured by the value, the food is just average. Don't go.

So I've had the opportunity to dine at Sushi House on several occasions. I highly recommend dining there when it's not busy--that being around 3pm-6pm. The service quality seems to correlate with how busy they are, but as it gets busier, the service goes down! Plus, the quality of the rolls go down. However, this place offers a wide range of rolls to choose from as well as great prices to match. My recommendations: Lion King, Island, Samurai and Crunchy. The wait is long, but if you go during the times above, sometimes there isn't a wait at all plus you get quality.

They have a lot of different kind of rolls at very affordable prices. However you get what you pay for. The quality of fish taste below average. They try to compensate that with the other stuff they put in the rolls. However each roll is very cheap and the portions are big. The wait though is extremely long. We waited over an hour on a saturday evening. I guess this place is crowded because the portions are huge and the prices are low. Other than that its great for cheap sushi, but there are other places like this with this type of quality and price for less the wait.

This is where I took my 70-year-old mother when she wanted to
try sushi for the first time in her life. That said, this isn't just a fast
food version of sushi. Sushi House offers a full range of choices,
from the exotic to the standard. For lunch, try their bento box
special, which comes with a variety of dishes and is reasonably
priced. Although they moved into much larger digs in early 2005,
their following has grown along with them. You might still find
yourself waiting awhile. For lunch, get there early -- say, 11 or
11:30 a.m. -- for little to no wait. By 11:45, you might have to wait
for a table for a few minutes. Their new digs also allow you to
look out on San Francisco Bay as you munch away.

PROS: Great food, wide selection
CONS: Can get busy, increasing wait time

Serivce was unsatisfactory; they're evidently understaffed and it is hard to flag down a server. The food, however, is very reasonably priced and there is a large and very creative selection of rolls both well-known and invented here. The wait is horrendous, though, on usually busy nights. Call in first, or don't bother going if you're prone to becoming impatient.

The service at Sushi House is terrible. They failed to serve us 2 of the 5 meals we ordered. After waiting for about 15 minutes,we had asked several of the waitstaff to check. They never did. (We could see that they decided to service tables at the opposite side of the room). 5 minutes later we approached the manager who would only say that it was on the way. When they did finally serve the remainder of our order, everyone else at our table was finished with their meals. The waitstaff offered several poor excuses on why the order was late. They blamed it on the chefs by saying that the chefs are responsible for certain tables. They also admitted that they were understaffed.

As of this wknd (05JAN) The Sushi House has moved to a new, larger location. Hopefully this will improve the service of one of best Sushi places I've been to in all of CA. Give it a try post Jan 15.

I agree with the long long time wait, and also have a little to say about their service. However, becuase their rolls are so good, and a lot of people just want to eat there, for such a little business space, they are acutally not too bad. If you don't mind to wait long and don't require excellent service, but desire good sushi and rolls. Sushi house is good for trying.

We wanted take out on a Saturday evening, around 6pm, and they told us it will take 45 minutes for the order to be ready. Then when asked how long the wait for a table, it was 1.5 hours. I don't get that.

But I have to say, they have really good sushi rolls and their fish is very fresh - - probably bec of the high turnover. Their chx teriyaki is mediocre.

If you plan to have lunch, get there at 11am; and for dinner, NO LATER than 6pm. Otherwise, you will starve to death before you get a seat.

One female waiter to seats the customers are very rude - bad attitude. Not sure why she's still there. The place does not make you feel welcomed.

Don't know how it got voted for "Best of Citysearch." Confirming other reviews, yes, it USED to be great when it first opened, but service DETERIORATED with expansion-it's TERRIBLE. Phoned in an order on a weekday at 3pm, was told that 4 rolls would take 30mins. Waited 45 mins while a few tables were filled with customers when waiting. THEN, was given the WRONG order and asked to drive back to the restaurant to return it to them. Only compensation was a pathetic half-hearted apology. As a once-loyal customer, I expected at least, average service to accompany the expansion and increase in prices. This establishment is having a hard time with keeping up with the growth in business--it's not as if they don't have enough staff either. Completely DISGUSTED with the service. Don't eat there or order out unless you have a lot of time to waste!

True, you do have to wait quite a while to be seated; however, for me, the food is worth the wait. Sushi house will be moving to the corner of Southshore Drive and Park Street in Alameda in the near future. This change in location offers more seating, more parking, and should cut the wait for a table. Again, great food.

I don't know why so many people still go and eat there.

The service is so bad that you always have to wait long time to get served.

Sushi rice is ALWAYS SERVED TOO LOOSE. Once you pick it up with either chopsticks or fingers, it immediately falls apart. If you serve such things in Japan, you will loose business next day.

Trust me, it is not worth waiting hours to get seated there.
