This is a good spot for a first date. The food is good and the atmosphere is nice. The plates the food comes on are really unique too. Miso braised short-rib melts in your mouth, and the burgers during lunch are famous.

We go to Beacon Restaurant for special occasions. The food is always amazingly good. Something as ordinary as edamame (boiled soybeans) is always better there. A great thing to know is they have a fixed price menu for groups that is a bargain.

this is a small place that i really really enjoyed. located next to the jazz bakery, this place is very contemporary and modern. The food is very good. the last time i was there i ordered their udon and it was delicious. The food and drinks there is very good, but a little pricey. But i still highly recommend people try this place.

I saw the review of Beacon in the Los Angeles Magazine and was excited to try it out.
I made a reservation and when we were seated at a table uncomfortably close to another couple, we asked to sit at the bar. We soon realized that the bar was a place where the waiters gathered to chit chat about how much they had made that night and how much they were required to tip out the sushi chef. It was as if they didn't think that those dining at the bar could hear everything they were saying. The dining experience was ruined by this atmosphere. Plus, the food was mediocre.

My wife and I come here about once a month and are always glad we came back. The short-ribs are really good and the appetizers are decent. The seabass is good if you like asian style fish with a hint of sweetness. And they have nice service as well. Overall it is a nice night out at a very reasonable price. Note: I would recommend making reservations to make sure you are seated promptly.

Ususally when I'm in the mood for asian, I'll head on over to Beacon. The menu has lots of flavorful comfort food-- I especially like the yaki udon, the pork katzu and the grilled organic chicken. The atmosphere is clean and hip, but somewhat cramped and loud. I usually prefer to get take out and eat quietly someplace else. If it's a nice day, definitely sit on the patio.

We went last weekend and were pretty pleased. We liked all of our appetizers, especially the ahi tuna pizza. The skewers were good as well. My wife had the duck confit and I had the hanger (sp?) steak. She liked the duck and I really like the steak. I ordered wine by the glass and it was pretty good. Dessert was a real treat. I had the cheesecake and my wife had a tart that was the special for the night. This wasn't cheap, but overall, pretty good, and no complaints.

I don't know if this is typical, but when we were there, street parking was easy. There seemed to be a lot of spots close to the restaurant. That isn't typical for a good restaurant in LA so I thought it was worth noting.

We had our son with his and the staff was very obliging. We sat outside with a view of the bakery truck sculpture and fountain (hard to explain) and our son was fascinated by it.

Beacon has been around for a few years and is still tops. The food, the service & the atmosphere is still the best in Culver City. Really clean Asian food. I went back last week, after have been away all Summer & had the Asian Short Ribs. They are melt in your mouth tender. The bartender was friendly & helpful. A great change from so many other trendy places in LA where food & service take a backseat to the hype.
You can't beat the prices for the quality & creativity of the food. Keep it up & I urge you to try beacon if you have not yet.

Beacon gets mixed reviews online, but it was great for my group of nine friends yesterday afternoon. The food was excellent and well-priced. We ordered a Mason Cellars Sauvignon Blanc that was particularly good. The service was exceptional. The wait staff was attentive. We sat outside and were there from 12:30 to 3:00. There was never a sense that we had out stayed our welcome.

I recently read some unfavorable reviews about this place and had to write and support Beacon. I have been going to this restaurant for 2 years and each and every experience has been lovely. The service, the food and the ambience are great. I go at least once a month, so I'm a regular, but not a regular that is catered to in any way so it's not as if I'm getting preferential treatment. Only once did I have trouble getting a table, but that was my fault since I was looking for a table on a busy Saturday night. 5-spice chicken salad, hangar steak, green tea soba noodles with shrimp, broccolini with tofu, fried oysters, whatever fish dish they are featuring and the lychee ice are my favorites but I've tried almost everything on the menu and it's all good.

Beacon is wonderful restaurant!

I tried to go there once and they claimed to be all booked up, despite the 7 empty tables. I tried to go there a second time and once again, claimed they were booked up and the empty tables were reserved (even though I called ahead of time and was told I did not need reservations). Well, they finally seated us anyway, not before putting on a show of rearranging tables and so on (I guess to place the image of being busy). So, we waited a good 15 mins before any waiting approaching us (btw, not a single person walked in that door for the rest of the night...cancellations? Or the hostess was just full of it). Well, I got really excited for the ahi tuna pizza b/c I was expecting some crunchy wonton with some wasbi mayo and tuna tartar on top...and was disappointed that I got a pita with spicy mayo and sliced tuna on top. I got a pad thai and my bf got a swordfish. Swordfish actually very delic. Pad thai same, but I can get it at Natalee Thai for half the price. In end, they need to up the food and down the attitude.

small portions at a high price. they're fusion trio creme brule is a bust. only one of out the three is good and other two had the weirdest texture to them. the ambiance is nice, if you like that "we're trying too hard to be zen" type of feel. it was an "ehh" experience for a high price. the service was horrible too. they try to push us out of the resturant on to the cold patio and then ignore us for the most part. only one waiter had a heart there. a big bust if you ask me.

I've been here a few times for work lunches and find their portions a bit on the small side, but very good. I liked my chicken pad thai, their salads, and their green iced tea (which is a curiously opaque olive-drab green). It's a bit on the pricey side and you have to fight for parking on the street--but we usually walked. I'd like to try coming here for dinner sometime.

Enough's been said for long enough about Beacon, but why not add a few more accolades.

Located on a prime corner in Culver City in the Helms Bakery area, the restaurant has a clean, cool interior befitting the flavors that come from the kitchen.

The food is fast, well-thought-out, and interesting -- not just a tired old collection of marinaded black cods and sushi rolls. One night, a special salad pairs heirloom tomatoes with a giant mound of baby shrimp all dressed in a bright yuzu vinaigrette. It's clean and perfect for a warm night. Although awkward as finger food, the ginger-soy chicken wings are like cra.ck, get two orders. For those wanting to try a creative sushi roll without paying someone at Koi $22 for something drizzled in mayonnaise, the Beacon roll is fresh with smoked salmon, crab meat, avocado -- all wrapped in paper-thin cucumber slices. No rice. Delicious.

Chilled sakes are available by the glass or bottle and the attentive staff will explain that (+10) means its dry.

Lunch is great too, with the ahi tuna BLT being my fondest memory. And well-recorded here.

I absolutely love this restaurant!!! Tapas/small plate style food so you definitely get a broad range. Things I absolutely love and that you have to try!!!! The Oyster fry, tuna pizza (slices of tuna with hints of wasabi on a thin cheeseless crust...delicious and healthy!!), and the Beacon roll!!! Also, the lychee ice is delicious and where else can you get a rice krispy treat for dessert??? Service was good and I can't rave enough about the food. Four small plates will cost you about $50, enough for two (if you don't have a huge appetite!). A must try!!!!!!!!!!

Service was excellent and ambience was also pretty good. I ordered the vegetarian springrolls, chicken wings, stirfried eggplant with coconut milk, and chicken pad thai. Everything was fine except for the pad thai which was no comparison to the authentic one that we could have in a Thai restaurant. As a whole, it's a pleasant experience.

Our California roll appetizer was made with Krab. I flagged the floor person, she snapped at me, insisting (loudly), they were made of real crab. The waiter heard our exchange and came over and apologized. He said the floor person made an innocent mistake, she didnt know a real crab/surimi blend was being used. Anyone can make a mistake, but yelling at customersnot good.

Entrees arrived - my hamburger was OK My sister got a beef salad; she thought it was just OK.

My overall impression was if Im in the area, and REALLY REALLY hungry, and I cant think of any place else to go, MAYBE Id go back to Beacon.

My friends and I went here recently, and we were all very pleased with our experience. The price/portion was a little high, but I certainly did not have the sour culinary experiences that some of the other reviewers had. Three of us shared plates of a steak and potatoes dish (amazing steak served with average potato salad), incredible seasoned cod, and perfectly cooked chicken (the mango side was slightly disappointing, but the meats were what we were there for anyway). My vegetarian friend said she quite enjoyed her sauteed mushroom salad (despite the fact she doesn't love salads). Lychee ice was refreshing. Service was average to slightly pushy, but not incorrigible. If they have a special of fruit-infused saki, it is not to be missed (so smooth!)

The first time I went to Beacon, I thought it was just okay. I had the Vegetable Curry. The vegetables seemed fresh, but the taste was just fair. The second time, I had the Stir-Fried Mushroom salad, and let me tell you...it was INCREDIBLE. Even though I'm a vegetarian, I'm not the biggest fan of salads. But wow, was I impressed. The mushrooms were perfectly stir-fried with an exquisite taste. Presentation was beautiful, tossed in mixed greens, mounted high on the plate. The thin-carrots made the salad very colorful. My friends had the grilled chicken, black cod, and hangar steak and were all extremely impressed with how perfectly cooked they were. I'll be honest in saying that portions are very small, especially for the price...but we found it well worth it. We were all full at the end of the meal and could hardly finish our delicious Lychee Ice Dessert!

went tonight with a friend based on the rave reviews - we ordered the chicken skewers appetizer which was very small bits of chicken that was very salty. Then we had the spicy tuna rolls, which were decent but it didn't make up for the Udon with Kim chi pork we had - which was just soy sauce mixed with greasy udon noodles. Maybe they had an off night, but I was completely disappointed and definitely not full. I will not go there again.

I have been there 3 times but after the 3rd time never again. We were seated outside on the patio right beside a large manhole that had horrible sewer odor. We complained on to the hostess whom did not offer to credit any of the bill nor did she offer to get the manager for us, she did however say that normally this is not a problem, which led us to believe that it has been a problem before. I emailed the establishment and all they offered was a complimentary dessert for our bill @ $175.00 seated right beside a manhole that oozed sewer odor. We will never ever go again.

Based on the rave reviews online and in magazines my husband and I rushed to Beacon. We were horribly disappointed. The foods were overseasoned, the sauces were cloyingly sweet, the staff was uninformed and more concerned with their hair than the clientele and the decor was unimpressive.

We gave it one more shot with a group of friends several months later only to find the service was even more disappointing and the food remained under par.

This is a case of hype over substance. A must miss experience.

After reading all of the positive reviews about this place, I finally went this weekend. The Helms Bakery is a great space, in a cool, emerging part of L.A. But, I left the place scratching my head. I couldn't figure out why there was so much hype around this place. The food was OK, the prices were reasonable and the service wasn't too bad, but it was not anywhere near what I expected. There was really nothing special about the food, no works of culinary magic and wonder. The decor was simple and minimal, but not very interesting.

However, it seems the B- and C-level celebrities do seem to enjoy the food there. We saw Jim Belushi and the younger brother from Wings, Steven Webber, though not together.

Pros: great location

Cons: boring food

Pros: the beacon roll

In Asia, especially, in countries like Japan, when you think of a meal, rice naturally comes with it. So I hope Beacon will serve a bowl of rice with their entrees. Well, at least, with the Black Cod entree that I ordered. It was tasty but a bit overpowering by itself. Other than that, Beacon is a nice hole in the wall. Very nice.

The only thing that I can say is that the Black Cod dish is amazing. However, the portions are very small for the price. Very Amerianized-Asian - so don't expect the papaya salad to be very flavorful like the real Thai version. Don't expect too much - and make sure to eat bread before you head out to this place. Otherwise you will spend alot to get full.

If you love food and don't care much for the other BS, like; not getting your entitlement issues met by the Hostess or Server, then go here! In fact go eat at Beacon often! Your stomach and companions will love you! So will your debt swollen credit cards...This place is for "lovers of food." The Pork Belly Udon is created with much talent and knowledge. It's subtle ways will make you think you could duplicate it, but you can't, unless you want to get there when they open the doors. The mushroom salad with manchego cheese is down right bold and delicious. Get the fried oysters and a big beer, you'll think Cape Cod is in Japan. Just go eat there and save your persnickety ways, needy issues, and poor service complaints for the lame spots in Beverly Hills and West Hollywood...The Service is great!

The overall service wasn't bad considering the reviews here. Only the reservation staff ruins the experience by rudely reiterating the requirement to vacate the premises within 1.5 hours, making the entire dining experience feel rushed...1.5 hour time limit...WHAT is THAT?!? The wait staff was courteous and helpful. Although we did overstay our welcome for the excellent lychee sorbet, our friendly waiter did not tap his watch (I'm not a sorbet enthusiast, but the flavors worked together beautifully).

Experiment: to test atrevido and et415's comment about the 'prompt' bussing-staff.
Results: hilarious
Procedure: I left a tiny morsel on my plate and then reached for it as the bussing-staff came swooping down to clear it. He stumbled a bit and just about fell trying to change course.

CHICKEN SKEWERS and pad-thai...excellent; veggie nabe...good but not worth $13; udon...a little heavy on pork flavor but good; mushroom salad...disappointing; egg rolls...ok; presentation...above average

my date and I secured a seat on the patio on a warm winter's night (heat lamps added some warmth) and we enjoyed the experience of the food and a great Rose. My date had the chicken ubon which tasted very sweet and light. I had the yellowtail sashimi along with the Beacon Roll which included crab meat and avocado (minus rice). It was an excellent dining experiecen for the both of us!

Busy place, very popular, 5:30p on wed night & they gave us a hard time about not having reservations, I was stunned. Warning us to vacate the table by 7:15. Like we would stay that long, especially since as soon as you finish the plate, a nanosecond later its GONE! I thought they were just rushing us, but most table were getting the same treatment. Most of their wait staff had the same uppidity attitude as the front.

The food however was exceptional. Well presented and very innovative. I think I would even go back, with reservations of course to eat again. If I was insulted again, never though, no food is that good. The black cod was to die for, sashimi fresh, most flavors very subtle but very enjoyable. Their homemade fruit infused sake's were just amazing. The plates are on the small side, even the "large" plates.

I went here because of the nice LA Times review. Was I ever disappointed. First, our waiter was never around and gave bad advice. We ended up ordering more with another waiter than with our assigned waiter. The bussing-staff, though, was extremely attentive, swiftly taking away empty plates to make room for the course. Second, the restaurant gets incredibly noisy. I couldn't hear most of what my friends were shouting to me. We ended up skipping dessert so we could go somewhere quieter. I recommend the quieter outdoor patio. The room itself is pretty plain--nothing bad but nothing special. The menu had interesting items on it, but the food was just above average, not exceptional or extremely creative. (E.g., I thought the tuna sashima pizza was creative, but it's just pizza dough with sashimi on it...good, but nothing that required a lot of skill to make.) I probably won't return.

obviously it's all in who you 'know' to get good seating in this place. they were going to seat us at their outdoor patio at 9pm - IT'S NOVEMBER!!! after waiting another 1/2 hr to get a table inside - they sat us at the door - we may as well have been sitting outside. our waitress had no personality whatsoever - preferred looking at the wall than at us. the food was gorgeous - but def. not enough to make me want to go back. i've worked in high end establishments & never treated my customers like this. ever.

Great setting non smoking back quiet patio which is the best, simple good food, very clean and airy restaurant, a bonus that it is in culver city as it is missing any snobbery of most new restaurants!
Try the avocado salad!
Very excited to return to that corner where another gem Le Dijonnaise is across the street.

Went on a Saturday night, the place was half empty and they sat us at the back, next to the kitchen door, in the noisiest spot possible. The food was nothing special. Eggrolls are eggrolls. Sushi is so-so. Service was odd, not bad, just not polished.

We went here for a birthday. As we ordered, the waiter kept telling us that they were out of the things we were trying to order. Finally we finished But twenty minutes later he came back to tell us they were out of more items. We had to order again! Our food took almost an hour. I ordered albacore and they sent out tuna. When I complained they told me I was wrong. Then the waiter tried to charge us for items we ordered but they were out of. Don't waste your time.
