Maxi Hair Care is HOMOPHOBIC! Stay away if you are gay or you might be profiled like my boyfriend and I were. Maxi tried to charge my boyfriend for a nail polish he had purchased at another store the night before. Even after they saw

I am a male in my early 30's. I have been coming here since I was in my early 20's !
In fact I now live 30 miles away and still make the trek out to Berkeley just to get a haircut there (every 6 weeks!).
My absolute favourite is Kim, who only works part time and in my opinion does the best fades and super-short sculpting type cuts.
My next favourite would be Ellie and her mother and then Hannah, but of course this is just purely opinion. They are all great in my book !
The place is clean and modest and the price is right. I have paid double (even triple) for a haircut that was not as good !! I generally get a cut for about $20, and sometimes cut+highlights (when I let my hair grow out more) for around $65.
Say hi to the gals for me there ! -- Chris
PS- There is a student discount I believe and they do have some good products there.

Firstly, I am a mid-20s male grad student so that may change how relevant this is to you.

Maxi cuts did a fine job on my hair but like most things on Telegraph, the store was grungy. The store seems to do mostly walk-ins and is some where between a super cuts and a salon. The hair cut and shampoo cost me $25.

In general, my hair is difficult to deal with (it sticks out on the sides and grows in weird directions in the back), so I was happy that my hair looked okay after the haircut. However, while I can't pinpoint anything wrong with it, I have had some better hair cuts (at greater prices, however).

My hair cut was given by Hannah who was very good at following my directions, too good even: as a guy, I just kinda' want to be told what will look good. She also seemed rushed.

Bottom line, an alright hair cut for $25 but don't expect to be pampered or end up with anything really trendy.

Pros: Good haircut for $25. Followed directions well. No pressure.

Cons: Grungy, no pampering, not trendy

This is the by far the best place in Berkeley to care for your hair. I've tried the more expensive, trendy salons in the area and got a great cut sure, but I paid way too much at those other places. Maxi gives me a pro cut every time! I get so many compliments on my hair!
