We have visited this place several times. Love the food. Some of them can be pretty spicy. They service was fast and efficient. Kids loved the chow-mein, green beans and the Chinese bread.

I have been here for lunch and dinner and it has been good food are all times. They are very efficient at seating so even at rush hours the waits are not too bad.
The food is delicious, I particularly love the sizzling rice soup and the Hunan items.
The price is just right, especially for the city, I would definitely recommend them especially for families.

Ratings_icons Yummy Food in Chinatown

This restaurant specializes in Hunan cuisine and is located in Chinatown. The staff is very good about seating you right away and provide great service. Tea service and a soup course are standard with a meal. Portions are huge if you order a specific dish off of the menu because everything is served family style. I suggest going with a group of friends or coworkers and ordering a variety of dishes and then splitting them so you get to try some of everything and get some chow mien or fried rice or whatever you like as a base to go with the dishes. They have all of the favorite beef, chicken, pork, and veggie dishes and their seafood and duck dishes are very good also. We love to eat here for lunch anytime we are in the city.

Ratings_icons Not really Hunan taste with horrible service

3 duo tou

we, 2 adults went there with 2 kids. The dish amount is very small. we ordered not so many because we planned having Dim Sum in 5 hrs. So the waitress served us with angry faces and tried to take the unfinished dishes away times at the end of the dinner. We have to finish very quickly. We won't back there and won't introduce it to our friends.

Pros: American Chinese food

Cons: horrible service

The prawns with honey walnuts and the smoked pork are outstanding! I only wish they brought crispy noodles as an opener.

A group of friends ate there one weekend and one of them felt sick. I also found there are too much MSG in the food, and greasy. Wonder how often they change the cooking oil, esp. the fried grill. Service is not there as well. We would not go back there again.

They offer competent standard chinese food- nothing outstanding. we had their dinner "type A" and ordered a few other vegetarian dishes off their dinner menu. each dish was what it claimed to be- eggrolls were eggrolls, sweet & sour pork was sweet & sour and made w/ pork, etc. nothing special about this place. the bathroom is downstairs and a bit cramped and dirty (at least for the women's room).

Pros: standard chinese food

Cons: decor, bathroom

Ratings_icons Authentic fast-food Chinese

We were in town for a few days and had read some rave reviews on this place so we thought we should give it a try.
We had no choice but to go on a Friday night, so we decided to make a reservation just in case they were still busy by 8:30pm (late dinner). Sure enough, when we arrived, the line was out the door. So much so that we had a hard time getting to the front desk to give them our name for the reservation.
Because of parking struggles we were 15 minutes late for our reservation, but they promptly sat us within 10 minutes anyways and didn't give us a dirty look nor snide comment for being late (nice change from other places!).
This restaurant is not fancy-in food nor decor, but if good food, served quickly at a great price is your goal, than this place will deliver. Our chow mein was a tad greasy, but the gyoza was amazing as was the made from scratch chicken and asparagus with black bean sauce. Portions aren't huge, and they charge you $1 per person for steamed rice (which I thought was a tad tacky). That being said, the flavor was good, and the ingredients fresh.
It's not fine dining Chinese where you would expect to get a whole crab served with garlic sauce, but as I mentioned above if fast-food Chinese at a good price is your goal, than this is your place.
Note, parking is a bear, so do alot extra time to either drive around the block a couple of times, or to find yourself a parking garage.

Pros: authentic flavors, quick service

Cons: charge for steamed rice, shabby decor

I found this restaurant through City Search and was very pleased. We were seated in a reasonable amount of time. The staff was very polite, although we had some language barrier. I liked it because if felt more authentic. After placing our order, the food started arriving hot off the wok. It was delicious! I have a hard time finding sweet and sour pork that I really like. Theirs was tasty. Parking was a little tricky the first night, but we figured out by the second. Yes, it was so good we ate their two nights in a row!

Ratings_icons Excellent Chinese food

Upon reading reviews from others, my wife and I ate at Hunan Home during a recent San Francisco trip, and ended up going back before we left. The food was excellent, the prices reasonable, the service great and we had no trouble being seated quickly both times. There is your standard "chinese" fare like sweet and sour chicken and orange chicken, but also you can find other more interesting dishes like squid with spicy salt and smoked hunan pork, which are excellent. The sizzling rice soup was superb, and the green beans with diced pork had a wonderful flavor, as you could really taste the pork and the subtle spicyness. The service was friendly and prompt both times and getting to the restaurant was easy, as we just got off the cable car at jackson/powell and walked a couple of blocks.

Pros: Delicious Chinese cuisine and variety

Cons: They charge $1 per person for rice

I am coming from France and have been la ot of times in Beijing. Never eat so delicious dishes served by professional and sympathetic persons.

Pros: ambience

Ratings_icons Great staff and service to match tasty chinese food

glunardi

The Aquarium and staff certainly makes this place kids friendly. The staff is very friendly and helpful.

The sizzling dishes taste just like the Chinese food I grew up used to (in France). We ate there late on a Sunday evening and the restaurant was still packed.

The restaurant is setup with few benches along the wall on the right and tables on the left. Like most places in Chinatown, you are not going to come to Hunan Home's for its decor.

The prices are very affordable. Probably at the exception of the Crab dishes BUT I highly recommend it. Had the Crab with ginger and onions and must admit it was delicious.

Pros: Food, Service, Aquarium

Cons: Decor

I have been eating here since 1985. They made me feel at home the very first day. Their potstickers are the best. The Mongolian beef, orange chicken, and sizzling beef are my favorites. The food is always hot, fresh and just the way it was ordered.
Always crowded at lunch time but there is a lot of seating so the wait isn't too long.

Pros: Great food

Cons: Crowded at lunch-time

We found this restaurant through this website and we were not disappointed! We ordered the Combination Chow Mein, Orange Peel Chicken, and Honey Walnut Prawns; each dish was outstanding. The servers were very friendly and fast. Also a plus, our parking was validated-a great savings. Overall, extremely pleased and look forward to a return visit.

Ratings_icons Unbeleivable Chinese Food, you must go !!!

tparsons99

I must say, I started going to Hunan Homes back in 1984-85 and to this day, still find there food the best.

This is a family run business from the top down. They have excellent staff, pay attention to detail, and most of all produce amazing authentic Chinese cuisine ! Their PotStickers are made fresh daily, they are by far the best Ive ever had. Their Hot and Sour Soup again is the best in China Town and that says a lot about this place because Ive been to 30 different restaurants in China Town.

Go there, you wont be disappointed !!

Pros: Awesome Awesome food !!! & Great Staff !!!

Cons: NONE

Ratings_icons Don't call it Chinese restaurant please!

kluo

The restaurant chef lacks basic training in chinese cooking. Call it anything, but please do not insult Chinese food by calling this Chinese. I am a Chinese, and I have never had such bad food in my life except for small towns in the middle of nowhere where there are less than 10 Chinese peopel in the local population! It is an insult to have this one in San Francisco Chinatown!

The service is ridiculous. The owner just took himself a little bit too seriously. He made a point telling everyone how long the wait would be and at what time they would be seated. Well this is normal practice, except that he HAD to stick to the time he gave to seat people even when the table was available much earlier. One group of people was told that their wait would be until 8pm. When they came back at 7:45pm, the table was ready (I was sitting next to it). Well he turned these people away and told them to come back at 8pm. When they did, he seated them at the same table. It seems that he took his own word sooo seriously that customers had to sacrifice for him!

No way I would recommend anyone here.

I've been eating at Hunan Home's since 1989. I've brought all my friends and family over the years, and they all love it as much as I do. The food is always fresh and tasty, and the service fast and friendly. I love the whole braised fish and the sizzling Hunan bean curd the best. The seasonal Chinese greens and walnut prawns are great, too. I don't know what I'll do if they ever close!!!

Pros: Great Food, Good Service, Good Value

Ratings_icons Excellent Food, Service, and Atmosphere

Walking into Hunan Home's Restaurant, you will first notice a beautiful fish tank filled with colorful fish. The walls are lined with mirrors and lovely Chinese decorations, giving it an authentic feeling. Seating is very prompt, and with another room in the back of the place, there is always a seat for everyone. Drinks arrive in less than a minute upon ordering, and the food comes out only minutes later. Not only is it quick but it is also DELICIOUS. Their house special, honey walnut prawns, is a must, along with their hot and sour soup and combination appetizer. The service staff is unbelievably awesome. All the waiters and busboys make a combined effort to make sure you have a comfortable meal.

Pros: Food, Service, Atmosphere

Cons: None

Over nearly 40 years of eating in Chinatown, San Francisco, we have eaten in many places. A conservative estimate would be two dozen different Chinese Restaurants in San Francisco. In recent years we have only eaten at ONE chinese restaurant in San Francisco....this one. The service is excellent, unfailingly. The food is well prepared, is brought to the table quickly and is never, EVER disappointing. On my last visit there I ordered BASIL CHICKEN on the LUNCH SPECIAL MENU. I cannot recall ever having a better chinese food entree ANYWHERE for any price. I will be back there soon, hopefully. I can't wait to eat there again.

Pros: food, service, price

Cons: none

I was disappointed after reading such raving reviews about this place. A hidden secret of Chinatown? no nonsense chinese food? I ordered some traditional dishes like eggplant, beef noodle soup, small pork buns. Unfortunately most the dishes turned out luke-warm, the eggplant skin was tough indicating it was not cooked long enough or the eggplant was not fresh. The only good entree we enjoyed was the beef noodle soup, which was piping hot and spicy. This place is average at best. Their menu caters more to American tastes, which surprised me based on the reviews of this place. Very disaapointing.

Pros: fast service

Ratings_icons Do you read reviews?

cmc123

If you do, you know that sometimes people with a chip on their shoulder will write anything to cause harm to a person or an entity. A recent negative review is a good example. Im a native Chinatown local Chinese food lover too. Ive been eating here since the first day it opened. I have never had a bad meal or discourteous service here. If you do take the time to read more of the reviews, youll find the majority of the reviewers rave about this restaurantfor good reasons. There are good restaurants in Chinatown, and a few great ones. This is one of the great ones.

Pros: Great Food, Friendly Service

Ratings_icons Local Chinatown native warns against eating here!

cillax

The wait for the food to arrive was very long, causing my dinner date and me to wonder what was going on. The shao long bao (shanghai soup dumplings) were very good, but the beef was more fat than protein, the scallops few and a weird sour/tangy taste, and the green beans were terribly shriveled. Even though I was hungry, I could not choke down the awful food. I realized at one point that there were only tourists there (suckers).

Pros: shao long bao, validated parking, fancy fish tank

Cons: long wait, fatty, horrid food, loud pink decor

Ratings_icons Who charges $1 for rice?

adjcool

Food was great....for Chinese-American food. Ordered 'spicy' food that didn't have a lick of spice. Not blown away by the food, but it was notches above your regular delivery/take-out fare. Atmosphere was ok, this place has both locals and toursts. Service was impeccable with waiters repeatedly servicing me throughout the meal. Prices were average, but I was wondering why they charged extra for rice, which is obviously so standard.

Pros: Service, Food

Cons: Value, Atmosphere

Ratings_icons The Hype is Right! Wow! Such good Chinese food!

vassariggy

It's odd that in the city with the world's largest Chinatown I've had many a mediocre Chinese meal and take-out. However, I decided to take my parents to Hunan Home's in hopes of good times and food, as many other reviewers have suggested. We were seated for dinner right away with the ocean view (by the fish tank). Our server was very friendly and communicated well. My mother had the stringbeans and chicken, which were very fresh and not overcooked. I had the sizzeling beef, which came in a wonderful black bean sauce that thickened when poured over the included hot pan. My father had the tea duck, which, apart from the skin, was lean and very tasty. None of the food was salty, oily, or heavy. The interior was nice, not too loud, and you could see both tourists and locals eating here. I hightly recommend this Chinatown classic.

Pros: Food well made, Not Overpriced, Good Service

I first want to give a shout out to KIM- our server for our visit. What a gem you are!

I had researched chinese food restaurants for my recent visit to San Francisco and saw the raves this one received by citysearch members- so I put it on my definite list of things to do and places to go and boy oh boy- you guys did not steer me wrong! I and my mom, who travelled with me, were fortunate to have timed our visit to the restaurant on the "down" time between lunch and dinner. We had the place to ourselves and the server, Kim really showed us personal attention. He even recommended dishes for us to try. Do not pass up the Honey Walnut Prawns. DEEELICIOUS! We also had the prawns in Chili sauce. Delectable! The food was plentiful and conversation with Kim was delightful!

The food and service is very good. The shrimp with lobster sauce and the Ma Po Tofu are awesome. This is one of the restaurants we try to make it to whenever we go into the city.

Pros: food, friendly staff

Ratings_icons I don't understand its high rating?

I've been here several times with people from the office. Their meat quality is below average. The beef is fatty, the chicken is rubbery, and the result is little to no digestion all day. Yuck.
I would recommend Eric's, the Mandarin, and Andy's on Union any day. This place is curiously overrated.
