My husband and I went there with his office for their Christmas party dinner a few years back. We were really excited to be able to go to such a nice restaurant for dinner. It's located in downtown Fullerton, great location. The dining experience was better than we expected. Everything was great, especially the dessert!

The first thing I noticed when I walked in the restaurant is very bad smell. The carpet on the floor was very old and very dirty. Also the restroom had very bad moldy smell even though they tried to cover the smell up with the air freshner it didn't seems to help.

First we ordered the heirloom tomato stuffted with crab. It wasn't bad except the tomato wasn't heirloom. Then we had the salad with walnuts and blue cheese. I don't remember the name of that salad but the walnuts were staled tasting and the salad itself we didn't like. We switched to a spinach salad but it didn't taste any better and half of the spinach leaves were yellow. For a fancy restaurant I just expected a better quality food.
The rest of our food wasn't any better. My dish smelled like dirty feet which is not appetizing, I ordered pork tenderloin. The flavor was OK. My husband had filet mignon. I don't know if his steak just wasn't fresh or it's just the way they prepare it in this restaurant. The filet was kinda tough and not juicy also it had some strange flavor like it was going bad.
The chef came out and apologized for the steak he sad that the meat is always fresh and they order it from the same supplier as Costco if I heard it right. I don't know if he was proud of it but I don't buy any meat from Costco so a high quality restaurant shouldn't be buying it either. I felt like I was served a $5 Costco steak for $40.
All I know if you go to Wild Fish restaurant in Newport Beach and try their steak you'll know the difference. They buy their meat from some ranchers I think in Texas or Chicago . The meat is just outstanding. I highly recommend that place. I never had bad food there. Plus places like Mastro's, Oyster's and some others have way better tasting steak. The chef seemed to be very puzzled why we didn't like the meat. He just needs to go out to some other restaurants and try different food may be then he'll see the difference.
I will never go back. Very overpriced poor quality food.
The service was very good but it doesn't help if the food is bad.

I went to dinner with 5 of my friends on Thursday July 2nd for the first time ever and no joke I?m actually getting ready to go there tonight (reservations at 7:30 for 2). I'm honestly speechless! Like a tool we walked in with a t-shirt, jeans and flip-flops, some in shorts. Well we felt like morons when we looked around and everyone was dressed very nicely. I apologized for not dressing up like we should have and the beautiful hostess sat in a very private booth which was perfect for all 6 of us!

The wait staff is remarkable and the owner Ryan is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet! It was a real pleasure and even though we weren't dressed for the occasion he made all of us feel very welcome and happy that we were there...The Cellar was a full house that night!

For starters we ordered and shared a few appetizers. We had Escargots which was amazing (if you like that, if you?ve never had it, brighten your horizon and try it?you?ll love it), Bacon-wrapped scallops were hands down the best out of all the appetizers we ordered, tiger shrimps were sensational along with the Lobster Bisque and French Onion soups (yes we all got to try everything) and it was indescribable!

For our entr?es we had a New York Steak (medium rare)?only at a great place can you order a steak medium rare and have it come out melting in your mouth! Tournedo "Lili" (filet of Beef topped with Artichoke), three people ordered that and let?s just say enough said, it?s a must have?period! Sugar-crusted Ahi was a lady?s choice and it was very good, but I?m a steak guy so?oh and by the way, the presentation on all the dishes was phenomenal! I see people complaining below that the food portions were too small, obviously those people have never been to a fine dining restaurant. If you want to stuff yourself like a pig with crappy food, go to Claim Jumper and have at it! There is a reason why they give you so much food lol?need I say more? The portions at The Cellar are perfect and the quality of the food is top notch!

As for the dessert?CHOCOLATE SOUFFL?S! That is all I gotta say! If you?re a dessert person like me, it is to die for!

In the end?the service, the food and the layout of the place is an experience for itself! If you?ve never been there, GO! If you have, you know what I?m talking about! Anyways, I?m late for my reservation writing this review haha?enjoy!

Its quite a treat to literaly walk down into the cellar and you are always greeted as you come thru the door. Ask for the Grotto near the fireplace if you want a romantic private setting. There food is delicious and the deserts are wonderful. I would always recomend the lobster bisque soup as I have sampled resturants all across this country and only 3 forks in Austin Texas comes close, but doesnt beat them. Their wine list is top of the line and its great to have an old dusty bottle to the table to try.

This was my first time at The Cellar and I have to say it was a pleasant surprise. I am accustomed to driving to Los Angeles or West LA for fine dining and was surprised to find such an establishment in Fullerton. I can only express utter joy of finding a gem like The Cellar in Orange County. The food and the service equaled that of other 5 Star establishments in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The food was better than Melisse and the JiRaffe as they are extremely overpriced. My family and I had a wonderful time. You must try the French Onion Soup for starters and souffle for desert. The food overall was superb as well as the service. I look forward to revisiting the restaurant.

I recently visited The Cellar restaurant for the first time. The first thing I noticed was the decor. AMAZING! It turns out the people who did Pirates of the Carribean at Disney Land also did The Cellar! The food was perfect. Very creative. The scallops are a must have. Thank you to the owner (Ryan I believe) for being so gracious. We didn't have a reservation and he was more than accomodating. I'll be back for sure!!

I've been coming to this restaurant for years now and it never disappoints. I was recently there again and they brought back table side service which I love. Maybe its because the first thing I learned to cook was banana flambe but I thought that table side service was a dyeing art and here the cellar is keeping it alive. They have a sommelier on staff which is a welcome help considering how large the wine list is. Most of the staff has been there for a decade or more so its always comforting seeing familiar faces who actually remember me and often times know what I'm going to want to order for food and wine before I know myself. I look forward to returning sooner rather than later

I took my girlfriend here for her birthday after reading the reviews. At first we couldn't find the place since it's underground. When we finally found the restaurant, it was in a small alley with steps leading to a small door. There was a fowl smell once we entered. Even with reservations, we had to wait 20 mins. The place was more like a cave in the middle of down town Fullerton than a "cellar" of romantic dining described. The food did not match it's price. You're better off going to Orange Hill restaurant for the price you're paying.

I was shocked to read the review below. I was there that night and had an absolutely amazing time. The owner was very attentive to us. When having a tough time trying to figure out which wine would go best with our meals he was spot on when he recommended us an excellent bottle of wine. We took a little tour of the restaurant by ourselves. We walked through the grotto, a very private and intimate set of booths. Very romantic. You can even close curtains around your booth for an extra private evening! I've been to The Cellar numerous times and have always had my expectations blown out of the water. The owner is very polite and goes out of his way to make his guests happy. The hostess is so warm and wonderful, I often just sit at the bar and chat it up with her.
So in my opinion if you are looking for a nice night out with exquisite wine and amazing food, go to The Cellar.

My companion and I were seated in a very private, yet VERY noisy private booth (wedding reception upstairs, and very obnoxious, VERY loud group in the adjoining booth). The owner seated us and stated that he was available for anything that we might desire...yet he never returned to our table....odd to make that statement and then disappear for the next few hours. We ordered a few items from the menu and it was certainly good and bad. My lobster and arugula salad with vanilla vinaigrette was outstanding, yet tiny. My companion ordered the French onion soup and we both agreed that it rather poor and tasteless. For the main course, my companion ordered the salmon tournedo, and it was outstanding. I ordered the "prime" New York steak, in what sounded like a fabulous sauce. I doubt that it was a prime cut, and the sauce was sparse and forgettable. For a prime New York steak, go elsewhere. If this was prime beef, they ruined it in the preparation (broiled rather than grilled). Rather tough and lacking the taste and texture of true prime beef. The sauce was insignificent and very sparse (perhaps a teaspoon-ful thinly spread over the meat). The steak was served with about 2 tablespoons of mashed potatoes piped into a tiny tower with an extremely shriveled sprig of rosemary stuck in the top of it. I wondered: why even bother?
We ordered a Grand Marnier souffle for desert and it was the best I have had.
the service was outstanding. The food, however, was certainly not. Good food (the salmon, salad), but definitely not worth the price. if I want a great steak and fabulous service, I will stick with Morton's. Pricing is similar and the food is far superior.
The Cellar is a nice romantic place for a good meal. it is far from exceptional, however. And at the prices that they charge, the quality falls far short
After 20 plus years locally and never dining at The Cellar, I will not return. A good meal, but very, very far from being worth the money, nor the reputation

I would like to extend my compliments to the Owner, his staff, and the Executive Chief for creating such an amazing event. I really had a lot of fun, it has only been on rare occasions that I have treated myself to the enjoyment and thrill of fine dining. Which made this event a real special treat for me. I have always enjoyed sitting down to an excellent meal, smoking a good cigar, and sipping on a cocktail/good drink (with dinner or the cigar). To have the opportunity to combine all three of these; Fine Dining, Cigar smoking, and the added experience of Scotch tasting was really cool. The setting, the balcony of the Villa Del Sol, for this event was very relaxing and enjoyable. Plus the four course menu provided for the event was outstanding, I really enjoyed the aromas, visual presentation, and flavors that where created by the Executive Chief. My favorite course was the Third/main course which was a Mixed Grill of Lamb, Beef, and Veal (each one had their own special sauce) . As for the Scotch, prior to this event I had never really tried Scotch before and having a chance to try the four (12 yr, 15 yr, 18 yr, & Cask Strength) different types of Scotches was an exciting new experience. Also the Gentlemen at my table where all really cool and friendly which made the experience even more enjoyable. If you enjoy Fine Dining, Excellent Cigars, and Great Scotch I highly recommend you attend this event in the future. Personally: I am really looking forward to when they host the next "Scotch & Cigar Club" event.

Don't expect Claim Jumper portions. If you want a corporate experience, go to Patina (Patina was great when it first arrived, but it has lost its luster a little bit).

This is an excellent restaurant. Decor is like nothing else in Orange County. Food is excellent. Staff is EXTREMELY knowledgeable. The wine list has all of my favorites. The food takes some time... but you're not running a race during dinner, are you???? Be patient, open up a bottle of caymus and enjoy the pleasantries of life. The integrity of the menu is world class, and the quality of the food served is top notch.

The Souffle is the best that I have EVER eaten. It is just divine. We have ordered it several times, and it always lives up to the first time I had it.

Everytime we visit this place, it reminds me of why I love it so much. The Cellar and Partner's Bistro (Laguna Beach) are my favorite places to enjoy life behind a dinner table.

Salut!

First let me start by saying..WOW, WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! I visited The Cellar Restaurant over 5 years ago, it was good, but I had no idea what it COULD be. I recently gave it another shot with some girlfriends of mine and was pleasantly surprised. First, I didn't think we would need reservations so we just showed up. They were very busy that night but the Matre de said it would be no problem and sat us within 10 minutes of being there. It was actually nice because it gave us time to enjoy the bar! Seemes a new owner by the name of Ryan Dudley turned this place around in a big way. It's so warm and friendly, and the food was absolutely amazing! My girlfriends and I look forward to heading down to The Cellar again. This time maybe we'll just grab some appetizers and a bottle of wine at the bar!!

We were greeted by a very friendly host and then seated at a booth. Servers were polite and the food was excellent! Wine was fantastic and we had a great time! Would definitely go there again!

My husband and I have always wanted to eat at The Cellar and when time came to make a reservation I checked citysearch and became worried due to a couple postings regarding poor service. I called the restaurant anyway to make a reservation I figured even great restaurants can have an off night. After speaking with a nice young lady on the phone she assured me that the new owner has been working very hard to correct the issue. I must say our evening was absolutly perfect. Food, wine, and service was incredible. We had a very romantic private booth in what they call the "grotto". I can see why The Cellar is considered one of the most romantic restaurants in Southern California.

My girlfriend, parents and I had a incredle dinner for my birthday. We had incredible waiter who explained the specials and the menu in detail. He had a accent so he was a little hard to understand but he was very proffesional. The owner can by and helped us pick out a bottle of wine. He let us decide on our entrees then he chose a wine that paired with our selections. The lobster bisque is amazing and three of us ordered the lamb. We finished with a chocolate soufle. During the corse of the evening we had waiters cleaning crumbs from our table and attending to our every need. The prices are up there but it is no more expensive then Mr. Stox or The Summit House. The restaurant is a little old but the owner told us that he is installing new carpet this year along with new lighting and paint. All in all this was an amazing experience and we can not wait to return.

Just moved to the OC and took my wife to the Cellar for her birthday. We arrived and were led to our table after a short period of time. We were seated and then waited for 15 minutes to even get the chance to order something to drink. My wife ordered wine from the menu. I ordered water. After 10 minutes, I seen our waiter walk up with my wifes wine on his tray. He was stopped by someone who works at the place and instead of coming by and droping off my wifes wine, he follows this person to the cash register and they go over a bill for 5 min. By now I am steaming. In the meantime, the people at the table next to us were seated and they had already received at least a water bottle. Finally our snob of a waiter came by with the wine and water. The menu's are very hard to read due to small lettering plus not a lot of light. We asked him if he had anything that he thought was great on that menu. His reply was, of course, everything on the menu is great, what can I get you. In the end, it took two hours to get drinks, the soup, the main course and the dessert, which was the best dish of the night. I find it over rated.

The undergroud setting creates great expectations, as does the menu. However, the service borders on contempt and the food fails to live up to the check. I am always amazed at how this place stays open.

My husband and I decided to dine at the Cellar for our anniversary. We will never go there again.

The food was decent but I was a bit disappointed, as I had expected better food. I've dined in several excellent restaurants (Citrus, Ivy, Diagalev, Patina, etc.) and was expecting great food, considering the reputation I had heard The Cellar having. I was a bit disappointed but that wasn't the worst of it.

We were seated and proceeded with our meal. Our server struck up a conversation with the couple at the next table (the server, a middle-aged man, had attended CSUF where the gentleman at the other table attended or had taught there) and would come back to refill their wine glasses while completely ignoring us.

The whole meal continued this way, including dessert. We had taken a cab there, figuring that we would celebrate a little and didn't want to drive home. We told our server to please call us a cab. After waiting a while, they told us that the taxi must've left and shoo'ed us out the door and told us they would call another cab for us. For those that don't know, they call it "The Cellar" because it's actually underground. They told us to go "wait in the parking lot". This is supposed to be from a five-star restaurant with supposed "good" service and clientele.

Needless to say, we ended the night with having to call a cab on our own (they never seemed to have called one) and getting another drink at the bar on the ground floor of the same building while waiting for it.

I took my girlfriend here for a nice romantic Valentine's dinner. It took them about 15 minutes to seat us; understandable for Valentine's day. This was my first venture at what some would call a "nice" or "fancy" restaurant. Positives: The staff was friendly, nice atmosphere, nice tableware, food was tasty. Souffle was awesome. Negatives: the service is absolutely slow. I cut them some slack because they were busy, but please... things should actually be better on special nights like Valentine's, especially for $85 a person. You pay them to perform. It took them a good 10 minutes to bring us water and another 10 to take our order. it took another 15-20 minutes for the first course to arrive another 15-20 minutes for the second course, at least 25 minutes for the third and main course and another 25 minutes or more to wait for our dessert - the souffle. Honestly my food could have been hotter (except the souffle it was steaming hot!). I wouldn't have minded asking for new dishes, but as slow as they were I knew it would only aggravate the problem of their snail-like service. I was happy that I spent the night with my love and she really enjoyed it, but the service and temperature (or lack) of the food was not up to my expectations. It was also very cold inside. I have had more attentive servers and hotter food at significantly less expensive restaurants. Perhaps they're better on a regular day, but I was not impressed. I chose this restaurant because of all the accolades and hype from other people and online reviews. However, it looked like all the hype turned out to be just that - hype. Give it a try - just don't be surprised if you're there for 2 hours or so, your waiter is in slow motion, and your food flirting with being cold....

Once a month a friend and I get together to go to "nice" restaurants. A chance for two single women to have a nice evening out without having to be on "date" behavior! This month it was the Cellar and were were absolutely thrilled. From the moment we arrived and were taken to our seats we were treated like special guests. The owner, Mr. Dudley, came by and spoke with us, taking our drink orders and suggesting a wine. The service throughout the meal was perfect and at no point were we made to feel like we had to hurry up and vacate the seats or treated any differently than "couples" throughout the restaurant (as some places are wont to do with single women). The food... ahhhh the food! There aren't many places you can go and order escargot, so when its on the menu we take advantage of it and we weren't disappointed. The lobster bisque was the best I have EVER had. My friend had lamb and I had duck... neither of us was disappointed. I wish I had ordered the souffle, but the chocolate mousse and the chocolate terine satisfied that "I need a little something sweet" desire. Do I recommend the Cellar? Oh yes.. for their service, food and surroundings, this was one of the best French restaurants I have ever been to!

I wasn't sure about French food before, but I will never doubt it again. My husband and I came on a Saturday night for our wedding anniversary. From the moment we walked in, we had the biggest smiles on our faces. From the bottle of wine to the appetizer, to the lobster bisque, to the salad, to the main course, and then dessert, we were in heaven! The service was spectacular, everyone was very friendly and answered all hundred questions we had. My husband had the venisson for dinner, and I had veal scallopini. Unbelievable! Never had venisson before, and surprisingly enjoyed it. But, the lobster bisque, OUT OF THIS WORLD! We want to go back just for that. So, I guess you can say we liked it.

Best service in OC. I did not like their decor but it goes with their name. The food was very good. We had the John Dory and the veal chop. The fish was soft, tender and very tasty but the portion was bit small. The veal was just as good but we did not like the sauce because it was sweet. Next time we will have them put it on the side.

What impressed me most was the wonderful and attentive service. The Maitre D's made us feel like VIP guests. The anticipated our every need before we even had to ask. Beautiful chandeliers were twinkling against the backdrop of the grotto-like atmosphere of the cellar. Very romantic! And the food! The oysters were the best I have ever tasted. The veal was also superb. I would definetly recommend this place to anyone celebrating an anniversary or any other special occasion. I would come here again.

Food at dinner $68, Wine at Dinner $120, Service $40, Spending a romantic evening with my wife - Priceless. Everything was great, my wife and I spent 3 hours of our anniversary with each other in the "Grotto" of The Cellar. The service was excellent from the beginning. The Matre' de greeted us at the door and escorted us to our table set apart from the whole restaurant. There was 3 waiters that helped us throughout the night and every need was fulfilled. The food was perfect, we enjoyed five courses of the award winning menu. After enjoying the Chateau Brion we got to thank the chef personally as he passed our table. My wife and I would highly recommend the restaurant to anyone who would like to spend a romantic evening with their significant other.

Other than spending several extra minutes locating the entrance and some time to pass before receiving menus, we had a wonderful romantic evening at The Cellar. I ordered the NY peppered steak and it was, thick and big, seasoned very well and cooked medium rare to perfection. Better than some fine chop houses I've been too. We also ordered the John Dory which is a new item to me and like no fish I have ever tasted. Fabulous. I prefer to drink wine from a snifter rather than their glasses. Waiter didn't mention what they were out of for the evening until we were ready to order. 2 of our selections had to be changed then.
The ambience was wonderful. Love the cellar setting with the low roof. Artwork and architecture were pleasing. Be sure to print out the souffle coupon. "mentioning citysearch" like the add states won't cut it.

The Cellar has been around for years and is a GREAT local Fullerton favorite. It has a wonderful menu, with lots of variety and a huge wine list. Even the butter for the bread was fantastic. The maitre d's were very professional. The atmosphere is romantic, and there is great seating for couples. The seating for groups is also great. Order the souffle (grand marnier or chocolate) early to ensure it is ready by dessert time. Dress business casual, and make a reservation.

Message from The Cellar

Since 1970, The Cellar has maintained an unparalleled tradition of gracious European cuisine and service. This romantic and elegant rendezvous was conceived, designed, and built by artistic craftsmen from Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean. Since then it has been the crown-jewel of Fullerton, being the most truly unique fine dining restaurant around. Reminiscent of Old Europe, The Cellar Restaurant, located in the basement of Fullerton's historic Villa del Sol, is accessed via a flight of dimly lit stairs. This world-class restaurant retains all of its architectural and ascetic beauty from its early conception and building. Soft lighting, chandeliers, structured arches, cave-like walls and two cozy fireplaces evoke the feeling that you are in a private house of royalty. The Cellar's elegant surroundings inspire nostalgia of Old Europe and it's culinary excellence abounds with only the finest and freshest foods prepared in a lighter version of classical French cuisine. The Cellar is the perfect setting for an intimate and romantic evening of fine dining. Take part in our extraordinary wine list, experience our unsurpassed service, and savor our tantalizing menu. The ambience and service of The Cellar truly speaks for it's self.
