Ordered take out yesterday. First it looked great, the ambience, friendly staff, if a little slow. But the suspicious thing was that even though all other Japanese places were packed, since it was Friday night, this one had a lot of open seating. Also, staff spoke Korean and the menu had Korean entrees, that's not something that the Japanese places usually do. But I was very hungry and only notice the terrible quality when I ate quite a bit. I ordered Chef's Sushi Special for 35 dollars and a caterpillar roll. First and foremost, smoked salmon started to turn, so neither myself nor my wife touched it as it smelled bad. Miso soup was from the instant packet, salad had untrimmed tomatoes. Secondly all of the fish on the sushi was not fresh and a little sticky. The quality of presentation was terrible, all california rolls were different shapes and sizes, stuffing falling out. Pieces of fish on nigiri were gigantic, impossible to eat in three bites. And yes, the rice was not the sushi rice, it was plainly cooked long grain basmati rice, slightly al dente and held together by starch or something else. I only regret one thing, that I was too tired to bring unfinished sushi back to the chef and demand my money back. Wasted the money and the evening. Go somewhere else, San Mateo has a huge selection of great sushi places most of them better and actually cheaper than this one. Man, I ate better suchi at fast food joints, like Sushi-Hut! Don't go to Kyoto!
