1 Stars: San Diego Humane Society is not for everyone. (by Sara C.)

I brought my dog Piper.. a 1 year old pure bread boxer to the humane society because he had some aggression issues and i could not take care of him both financially and physically. I got a call yesterday telling me that he was not adoptable and that i had until tomm. morning to either go pick him up or he would be put down. I immediately got in my car to go get him. When i first brought him there he weighed 50lbs. When i picked him up he weighed 36lbs. You could visually see everyone of his bones in his tiny body. They had not neutered him (which i thought may solve a lot of the issues). And they made no attempt to fix any of his issues with training (which he badly needed). For some reason i thought that the purpose of the humane society was to rehabilitate dogs and find reasonable homes for them.. even if that means a home with no other animals. To say the least, my experience was terrible.

5 Stars: Shela the Highwayhound (by San Diego H.)

San Diego Humane Society is where I found her!

"She" was waitin fer me, in the last cage I looked in.

They called her Little Dog cause when she curls up to sleep she appears to be much smaller then she is ;)

These folks are GREAT they take the time to make shure bout things medical, and how ya interact w the furfolks.

Shela [ had the name picked out cause I was actually lookin fer an Aussie when I found her ] was expectin to drive my SAR rig away first time she got in, I think, cause she jumped inta the passenger seat, crossed over to the driver's seat, sat down, put her front paws on the steerin wheel spokes, turned and looked at me with a look that said "oK, I'm ready, git IN, and let's GO :)

When I indicated she wasn't goin to git to drive -- her tail & ears went down, and she crossed back to the passenger seat and sat down to lift her front legs one at a time to be strapped inta the safety harness my previous dog had worn -- fit perfect :)

Been 4 years now, with respect to my late Cinder, Shela is the best furperson I've had in my life!

THANKS San Diego Humane Society!

from the San Diego Highwayman

5 Stars: Adopt a pet! (by Robert D.)

I adopted my cat from the Humane Society and it was a great experience. You are able to view all the different cats and even interact with them. The cats are kept humanely in roomy cages and they even feed them Iams food! There is a fee for adopting your pet, but it will be up to date on all shots and spayed or neutered.

5 Stars: humane society is the place to go for pets (by jesse a.)

I know everybody wants a purebread dog or cat, but cmon. There are thousands of animals put down every day because noone wants them. The Humane Society does everything in its power to stop this from happening. We have gotten two dogs from here (one from the helen woodward up in Del Mar which is great) and they are part of our family. The kennels are kept clean and the dogs/cats seemed well cared for (despite how badly they were treated before they were submitted to them). Next pet i am definately going here. Adoption fees are high, but then again, it does pay for the animal and all the food and love and help it was given.... well worth it

PROS: great humane place to get a pet
CONS: a little more pricey than you would expect, but worth it

5 Stars: Save A Pet (by Sarah H.)

The San Diego Humane Society is a very clean, well kept animal shelter in the San Diego area. It is sort of in a hidden location, but I am sure you have passed by it in many times before, whether you noticed it or not. The people at the San Diego Humane Society are friendly, and they are always looking out for the best interest of the animals in their shelter. You can expect them to help you find the best animal for your family, your home, and your budget. They always have a wide selection of animals available for adoption, and their adoption fees are a bit high, but include many important things such as shots for kittens, and other essential pet things. They are not as affordable as a pet store when it comes to obtaining an animal, but you can help save an animal by adopting from them.

PROS: Adopts out animals who might be destroyed otherwise
CONS: Expensive adoption costs
