Yesterday I went to get a grinding part for one of my tools and again noticed a sign I had seen on the weekend. But this time it was strange, being a Monday at 9:00 a.m. and so I asked the fellow renting a space out in front if Brad was all right, and he said that he had passed away. No! I was shocked. I went to the back and discovered, one of my dear friends from A&A Auto who has been so good to me and John, Brad's co-worker for many years out in back in a small shop. The news had been true and Brad has passed. I think that the hate mongers and the perfectionist people who wanted to spit back at Brad are very small minded. Sure Brad was not going to win any nice guy contests, but he actually helped me to do the jobs I had right, and like the other fellow mentioned, none of us is perfect or knows it all. In fact the folks that know the most know how little they know. In Brad's case, he showed this with honor and excellence. I once wanted a small drill bit. He told me to bring in the drill, and the material I wanted to drill into. He probably wanted to know the temperature and time of day too. Like the rest of us, I was pissed, having driven from west Pasadena/Eagle Rock and I just impatiently wanted, what I wanted, when I wanted it. But like my own dear grandfather from the 1920's Brad was not interested in guessing or trying to just sell me something. So when I returned, with the piece of the metal Pipe and the drill I PLANNED ON USING, he told me that the RPM's were way to high on the drill I wanted to use, and that I needed one that went no higher than 700. Wow, that was news to me. I had an old slow drill such as I was told would work and when I followed his advice, the drill worked on 10x as many posts as I had thought, and the work was done well, not thanks to my wanting to be pampered and treated like a 2012 PC correct softy, but thanks to some old school toughness and grit that helped this man to not worry about what others thoughts, but what they wanted to do. He never led me wrong in terms of my questions, and I learned to be a better person. In fact when I went yesterday, I had the tool in my hand, and the old grinding wheel, and I was braced for his grilling. But sadly the grill was cold and I was not only left with no part, but my friend and neighbor was gone.
If a tool was fixed and did not work (the person who wrote about this) then that person should have made it known and not just walked away. No one knows for sure what is going to work or not work, but if you returned shortly afterwards and spoke to the person who did fix it, I believe they would try to make it right.
Now that Brad is passed, I just want to say that I will miss him very much. Each of us is a gift to the world and he was an amazing one. No one can take his place. Sure he was not here to be Mr. Nice Guy, and you had to learn how to deal with his shortness, but guess what, he was right and right on much more than he was wrong. Sadly, he was wrong about not taking better care of himself and not following his Doctor's Orders! Yet, none of us know when our time is, and hating, spitting, and being small is never a good idea. We would be much better off by loving, accepting, dealing, and being who we are and stop trying to make others be who they can't be and we are called to be. Live your own life and be all you can be. Today is special and will never come again.

I miss you Brad. Not you??re being grumpy. I just hope that your two girls older adults now wake up to what they are missing and make the changes and choices that will help them to live better lives, and that your company that has done so much good for the Pasadena Community, goes on and lives beyond your personality. No one is without faults or personality. I hope we can find someone to take the helm of your Tool Shop and keep it going. Not a "Home Depot" nice guy, who may or may not know anything, but someone like at Red's Plumbing who knows their stuff and is not afraid to tell you. Julie at Red's is awesome and like John King, they do not coddle or play nice. They just get what the problems are and give straight and clear answers. If you want a nursemaid and a mother, go home! Otherwise in the professional world, just grow a pair and toughen up enough to take a little punch now and again and learn, grow, and become more than you thought you could be.

Best to you all

I've lived in Pasadena for 30 years. After insulting treatment from Brad I've probably spent more than $100k outfitting my shop. Elsewhere.

I've been going to John King for thirty years. Bought most of the antique tools in my shop and the modern ones there. Brad is PRICELESS. He actually has kept me from wasting money on overpriced stuff, given away thousands of dollars of information, clues, skills, tid bits and so on. Even can tell you how to do odd and forgotten things. If you have a problem and are looking for a tool, he will often tell you how to solve it without buying new stuff. He seems grouchy at first, but he isnt.John King Tool is clearly devoted to the concept of custmer service. GREAT SHOP

A WORD TO THE WISE - I too, IN THE BEGINING regarded Brad as a bit irratasble & somewhat condescending. However, the manner in which he took ownership of any of his sales or repairs soon changed my mind. We have 19 years of great luck, outstanding advice and even better service. Just ask for advice on things you know very little about and you'll get the best there is in the tools industry.

brad at john king is a moron. i used to buy tools from him in the late 80's and the early 90's then i stoped because it just sucked to shop there so much (mostly because of brad). some how i forgot, so when my router broke this morning i stupidly called and got brad i ask if he could give me some best and worst case scenerios for a fix, of course he refused, he kept repeating that they dont do blind estimates and if i wanted to have them look at the router and i chose not to have it fixed i would have to pay them 10 dollars. its really to bad the internet hasn't killed john king yet. that last thing anybody needs when they are trying to buy or have there tools fixed is the soup nazi. dont deal with them or brad, its a waste of time, go to MINUTE TOOLS 323 264 7006 at least they are actually helpful

Plus side. Good selection. Some cool old porter cable planers. Owner is knowledgeable albeit a snob.

Negative. Average prices. Questionable repair shop. Takes his tool opinions to the point of insulting anyone who doesn't own an 'approved' tool. Will without a doubt make you feel like an idiot if you aren't a professional.

I actually agree with Al. I am a general contractor and have been going to this place on and off for five years. I have had two tools repaired in which a lousy job was done. The first being an old bosch router that I was told was worth fixing. After $92 It came back to me sounding bad with very little power. The next tool was a tool with a bad switch. The switch that they 'cleaned' wound up broken again in a couple of weeks. If I can't fix something that's unfixable then I don't charge someone. I have had a couple other tools fixed in which they did a good job. So I will still go back. On the subject of the owner's attitude. Al is dead on. I have heard him treat other customers with this incredibly insulting tone. I actually think though he's toned it down because of complaints and in these times NO ONE can afford to turn off customers.

These crusty guys are masters of power tools and bits. They may claim to specialize in wood working but they had me drilling through granite boulders in no time. If you're like Al M. who wants a clean store and smoke blown up your wazoo go to home depot or harbor freight.

This is an owner operator "old school" tool store. They (a gentleman named Brad) are very knowledgeable, and there is rarely a question he cant answer on hand tools. I have had numerous tools repaired and problems addressed by this company, and never a problem.

I have been going here for little stuff for 20 years or so. The people I have met have always been extremely helpful. Recently I have created a nightmare for myself and these people have bailed me out for very little money and a lot of help.

I highly recommend this store and will be buying my tools and consumables from here. Bye bye bigbox and on-line ordering.

JohnKing has been around since the 40's,the current owner has operated it for over 20 years. They recently moved their
store to the eastside of town.My complaint is that when I have
phoned or gone in to look the person behind the counter has been very condescending if not downright hostile. The showroom in their old store was piled high with junk and the power tools were all dusty, obsolete models. The guy tried to pawn a used piece of crap off on me for more than it would cost new at a home center. At the height of the Dewalt mania, this guy was telling people to buy his Makita tools that used the old battery system.Once when I called in to ask if he could repair a tool of mine he angrily told me that my tool was "A Toy" and hung up.Their new store also sucks,it seems to double as the owner's personal hobby shop as I had difficulty in getting his attention away from some metal he was working on to answer a few questions to which he acted very irritated.
I have talked to other tradesmen around town and they all agree that the owner Brad is hostile and it's easier to go somewhere else.I do not recommend John King tools to any of my pals in the trades or woodshop teachers I know.

PROS: You won't have to fight the crowds because nobody is shopping there!!
CONS: Poor selection,customer service,attitude.
