for dinasaur lovers

by Katherine T. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,822

If you're a dinosaur lover, there is a great selection of bones, winged creatures and ground dwellers in this recenlty renovated museum. Now it also includes a large-format movie theater so if you want to just relax and enjoy fun educational movies about your favorite dinasaur, check this place out. Don't forget to bring the kids!

Informative exhibits

by Robert D. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 11,649

The last time I was at the museum, they had an amazing dinosaur exhibit. There are many hands-on things to do, especially for children. Although the museum is rather small, there is a lot of great information available on all of the exhibits. After a fun learning experience, they also have a nice gift shop.

Interesting!

by Tanya B. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,465

We like going to the natural history museum. They have things that my daughter can actually touch, which I think is important for kids. Even the things she could not touch were presented in a way that drew her in and had her asking tons of questions. Worth the admission for an afternoon of learning, but get ahold of an entertainment book and you will get a coupon for a free admission when you buy 1.

Excellent museum

by Catherine F. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,805

This is a great stop while spending a day at the park, Balboa Park that is. The exhibits are really interesting and hard to forget. The staff there are all too happy to answer your questions about anything in the displays. Some of the exhibits are interactive so youd get a hands on learning experience, which kids absolutely love.

Museum

by Jennifer H. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,813

This is a great way to fill up an afternoon. This museum has wonderful hands on exhibits. My children had a great learning experience and are always asking to go back. They have an IMAX theatre which always has 2 different movies going on. It is a very large and impressive museum.

Great displays and kids' activities

by Margaret D. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,274

Besides having world-class displays (loved the dinosaur exhibit) they have great kids programs, too. Ms. Frizzle and the Magic School Bus stop here. You can also go on family camping trips and other activities with docents.

Nice museum, but smaller than it looks

by Matthew B. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,372

The Natural History Museum has tends to offer something a little different each time you visit it. With frequently rotating exhibits (last year, there was an excellent dinosaur exhibit, this year, something on chocolate), they make up for a lack of space with new and interesting information. Definitely take advantage of the big theater that shows nature documentaries on a regular basis.

It is, however, much smaller than it looks from the outside. There are only two floors of exhibition space plus the basement. The rest of the museum is storage and research facilities (good for the museum, less fun for visitors).

REally interestign exhibits

by Shannon L. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,632

This museum has really interesting rotating exhibits, and some fairly good (though slightly less exciting) permanent exhibits. The films they offer are of exceptional quality and are absolutely not to be missed. Make sure you have a few hours if you really want to take a careful look at everything.

PROS: Interesting, educational, high-quality movies

Could be Better

by Jerry W. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 12,690

The natural history museum was a great experience. The only thing was that it seemed really short, and I was surprised when I had already seen everything there. They had a really cool dinosaur exhibit when I went. The exhibit warned against a lot of common misconceptions about dinosaurs. Cool, educational place to take your kids or friends.

Fun Place for Children and Adults

by Karrie F. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 10,290

The Natural History Museum in Balboa park offers a look at San Diego's distant and more recent past. It provides a prehistoric look at the fossils that once gave life to a world of creatures unknown to us today. It teaches about Southern California's wilderness, from plants to animals, and about the threats that humanity poses to nature. Keep an eye out for innovative and captivating temporary exhibits, like the recent Chocolate exhibit.
