I've been going to The Mint for a long time and have figured out how to have fun. I even KJ'd at the Mint a few times on early weekend days when it wasn't too crowded, so I know how it feels to be one of them. Follow these guidelines and you're golden.

(1) Give the KJ a tip when you go up to give him/her your song slip. This is actually customary in any karaoke bar. The quicker you want to sing, the higher the tip. Especially when it's crowded.

(2) Be patient. Listen to other people sing and cheer them on. Talk with your friends. Drink your drink. Think about what song you want to sing next, maybe a duet with a friend. DO NOT go up to the KJ and ask when your song is coming on, unless you have seen other people go up twice since you put your song in. (But see #8, below.)

(3) If you have seen other people go up twice since you put your song in, it's OK to go up to the KJ to ask, but the purpose of your inquiry must be to just make sure that the slip didn't get lost somehow. (It happens from time to time.) Be respectful and apologetic.

(4) Your big goal there shouldn't be to just get up on stage and sing. Keep things in perspective -- you're there to have fun, which includes a lot of different things (see number 2 above). You'll drive yourself batty if you get obsessed with when you or your friends are going to get up on stage. Get over yourselves!

(5) Get there early if it's a Friday or Saturday night. If you get there and it's super crowded, just plan on it taking a couple of hours for your song to come up. If you don't want to wait that long, go somewhere else. If you get there an hour before closing and it's crowded, don't plan on singing. If you give a $20 tip, then these things shouldn't be a problem. That's not corruption, it's just how life works.

(6) Don't take your drink up on stage.

(7) You can only put in one song slip at a time. If you haven't sung your song yet, don't put another one in. when you go up to sing, you can hand the KJ a new slip, and don't forget a tip! The exception to this is duets. If you have a song in, you can sign up for one duet. So if you go solo, duet, solo, duet, you'll have the most opportunities to sing.

(8) You may see people go up there more frequently than you or your friends. Before you get all up in the KJ's grille, notice if they're doing the "solo duet solo" thing. If so, they've just done their homework and figured out how to get up there the most. Again, it's not corruption, it's how the world works.

(9) Just remember that you are basically a guest in this place. Yes, you're a customer, but for many of the people at The Mint this is their home away from home, they literally go there every single night. So no matter how often you go, you're a newbie, and you need to be respectful of how things are done there. They have plenty of other customers who have the right attitude, so they don't need to be excessively nice to you, when you have the wrong one.

(10) Have fun!

Pros: Fun, fun, fun

Cons: Crowded

Had a BD party there with a bunch of girlfriends- all of us karaoke virgins. Had a blast. Decent drinks and really friendly crew and clientle who seemed to know each other. Strong drinks helped to loosen the inhibitions. By end of the night we were all grabbing the mic and doing group numbers.

Avoid this hell hole at all costs. They SEARCHED my party after publicly accusing them of stealing a microphone. No one had the microphone, proven after they violated our rights.

It takes a lot for me to give a business my feedback, but I was so appalled at the rudeness of the staff that I had to do it.

I went there with a friend on a Saturday night and the technician was Frank H. The attitude Frank H. was displaying throughout the evening was pure poi$on. He was unbelievably rude to everyone, publicly chastising people for not using the mic correctly, for submitting more than one request, for taking a few extra seconds to come up to the stage? After waiting over 30 minutes, we decided to get a little air on the sidewalk where we could clearly hear him call contestant. We went back in after only 5 to 10 minutes. An hour had gone by when my friend finally decided to go enquire about his request. Upon asking, he immediately got yelled at by Frank H. who said he threw out his request the instant he saw us step outside. WHY? And if he saw us walk out, I am sure he saw us walking back in, so why not inform us of his action?

My friend was back in town this past weekend and we decided to give The Mint another chance on Sunday night after making sure Frank H. was not hosting. It was Jamin (Sudsy) instead. His attitude seemed slightly friendlier, although his lack of patience was quite obvious from the beginning. My friend handed him 2 requests and tipped him $2. Jamin asked my friend which of the 2 songs he wanted to sing FIRST. My friend answered and sang his song within 20 minutes of entering the request. When over an hour went by my friend asked Jamin about it who claimed he knew nothing about a second request. Someone said that if you don't tip at least $5 to $10, requests go ignored.

Maybe The Mint?s staff should remember that people come to a Karaoke bar to have fun, not to be yelled at or ridiculed in front of everyone. Also, if they have some unspoken rules about in and out privileges, number of requests of even tip amount, that?s OK but spell them out!

Overall, I would not recommend anybody frequent The Mint.

this is my favorite place to do karaoke in SF - the regulars are fabulous and the drinks are strong and reasonably priced. frank the dj manages a tight ship, so no messing around on his stage - miss a cue and you'll get yelled at, and groups of drunk chicks singing madonna off key will get the boot before the end of the song...but, if you perform well he'll give you the flames, which makes you feel like up until that point you didn't know what real praise was.

Pros: frank, karaoke, crowds

Cons: sometimes too crowded

ok I came to the Mint thinking it was going to be the best place to sing, but it turns out the Karaoke disc jokey is just plain and simple an ego maniac. He actually thinks he can sing and refuses to let the customer sing, because he demands that everyone listen to his horrible voice He is pathetic, plus you need to give him tips every time you go up to sing so he gives you a chance to finish your song or he will cut you off. I know the place gets crowded, but this guy is just too much. The bar tenders on the other hand are nice and very cool to talk to, but watch out for that little ego maniac of the kj. I think The mint is over rated. If you can find another place to do Karaoke please do so. But if you decide to venture out remember to bring money for tips and ear plugs so that you don't endure his awful singing.

I love this bar. It is a wonderful place to kareoke. My only problem is that they hired, Frank, an inexplicably and unnecessarily rude KJ, to work the four busiest nights of the week. He ruins the whole experience, which doesn't make sense because kareoke is supposed to be fun. Maybe he has an awful day job, maybe his career didn't trun out as he'd hoped, maybe his parents beat him as a child. Nonetheless, if you want to enjoy yourself, AVOID WENDESDAY, THURSDAYS, FRIDAYS, AND SATURDAYS WHEN FRANK IS WORKING. The rest of the staff is amazing. Emma who works on Tuedays is great. Dede is there on Mondays, and she's great. The Sunday KJ, great. The door woman and the bartender, great. Seriously, just avoid Frank. He's miserable, hostile, and confrontational, and it's not worth it over kareoke. Read the other reviews, it's not just me!

Pros: Everything is wonderful there so long as Frank is not working

Cons: Frank, even his co-workers don't like him. He kills the vibe.

this place is a joke - the KJ is awful and ruins this place. the 'tip' system just frustrates people who COULD be regulars but why bother? you will never get to sing even if you tip! so obnoxious --- I will never bring people here again (which means no large expense accounts or people who can drop allot of cash). who needs it?

a harsh review but true true true.....

I cant say this is the best place in the city but It's far from the worst.
I agree that the D.J. is stuck on regular customers. My be he knows who tips
regulary large.
P.S. You may not like him but he made some great movies you can find
at the nearest book store.

9/24/06
I went there last night and it appears they have changed to allow more people a chance to sing.
P.S. I didnt mean to be hard on Frank because when hes not at work hes a real sweet person.
and that remark I made abou his movies I should add ( he was forced to make them )

Pros: A comfortable place for all Gay or Straight

I've thrown two birthday parties at the Mint and had a blast both times. The reservation of tables for my party was free. I didn't get the impression that the KJ's were focused on their tips, nor did they show favoritism. They were most aware of the songs requested and whether they perceived them to be crowd pleasers. If you are choosing songs outside of the pop genre, it may take longer for your number to come up. A tip never hurt, but I don't think that is the KJ's primary motivation for who he/she calls to the stage. I was impressed with the diverse crowd and overall vibe at the Mint. You don't have to be Aretha Franklin to sing at this bar and feel the love. We started a conga line that wrapped around the bar to Lionel Richies, "All Night Long."

I've been to the Mint twice now. Both times have been great--the crowd is always really supportive of the singers. I only have 2 criticisms though. 1) There are a couple of hardcore singers that repeatedly sing. It's not that much of a big deal, but it gets a little annoying when it's crowded and you know there are others who haven't had the chance yet. Also, the last time I got in about an hour before closing. The bartender was kind of being aggressive with me about the 2 drink minimum, even though the place was closing soon. Otherwise, great place to have fun with friends.

This place came highly recommended for karaoke, but if you are NOT a regular, YOU WILL NOT SING. Even if you tip well (which I did), you will wait for hours before you sing as you watch new comers get on the mike before you.

The drinks are OK and the waitstaff is very friendly. But if you come here for karaoke, you willl not sing.

And in my book, UNFRIENDLY karaoke is an evil that should be punished by banishment to the lower circles of hell.

I'm a regular at this place, and it's my favorite place to hang out EVER. The staff here are SO nice, friendly, fun, and WONDERFUL! The place DOES get packed on weekends, so be prepared to wait a while (it's true that tipping DOES get you moved up in the rotation, but hey, that's the way it works...). They also have a MASSIVE song selection... thousands and thousands of songs, and they get new ones all the time.
As for the crowd, everyone is really supportive and nice... I never hear people booing anyone. I love this place because the people who come here are SO diverse... from college kids to the retired, gay, straight, transgender, whatever! Everyone comes here and you can meet just about any kind of person.
If you're looking for a fun, upbeat, friendly place with awesome karaoke and quality service, this is it!

Ben went OUT of his way to meet ALL my needs for my birthday party--from parking to storing my cake to reserving tables . Chris was super friendly when I called to make the reservations. Frank even called back to ask me how I spell my name for the reservation cards for the tables! he even recorded one of my songs as my bday gift!! the staff is so accomodating and nice!!!! why spend your money at a snootie place? they appreciate your business at this venue!

...I have a serious problem with the KJs at that place. They tend to only let you sing only if you are part of a large party or you are a regular. I know this because of the staff that was around 5 years ago when I went more often, only one of those guys is left and he doesn't make me wait hours to sing one damn song. The KJ on Monday nights seriously made me and my friend I was with wait 2 hours to sing our respective songs when we saw others get to go three times within that timespan. She also sang about 4 times herself, despite there being a large turnout. I know I will avoid going to the Mint for awhile now.

this place is hilarious! the dj frank makes the place so funny! the singing is great and the atmosphere is a blast! bartenders are a bit slow and drinks are watered down and often wrong, but overall, the place is worth going to. it's basically a hit & miss with the attitude of the entire staff there, though.

The Mint is a great mixture of SF eccentricities. Gay, straight, trannies, you name it, it's there! The karaoke generally starts at 4pm, seven nights a week. If you snooze, you lose, since most Fridays and weekends the place is packed after 9pm. The bartenders are great and the KJ's infinitely fair. It is the best sound system in the City for karaoke, too!

I too heard great things about this place, but it's all a sham! I've been 3 times now, and that's 3 times too many (second and third time, I was giving the place the benefit of a doubt). The bartenders are great, but the drinks are watered down, and don't even get me started about he kareoke DJ. If he likes you maybe, just maybe, you can sing one song. But if you don't kiss up to him or give him a big tip, FORGET ABOUT IT! Honey, you are NOT going to sing tonight, or any other night for that matter. Talk about holding grudges. Avoid this place.
