When I wanted to learn how to knit, I was told to come here. I highly recommend their beginning knitter's class -- the teacher is oh so patient, friendly, and just plain nice. It's two hours long, $20, and set me up nicely to learn the knit and perl stitches. After that, I was able to run with my projects.
I tried to get some basic instruction from the staff at the store (before I took the class) and got critiqued for my technique (I was a true beginner at the time). I also thought she was impatient. They have a huge selection of quality yarns.
The yarns can be pricey but you'll get what you pay for.
