Dr. Houston is the best. I only see Dr. Houston. My entire family have been with him for about 27 years, long before the Pet Hospital was open. My grandparents (when they were alive), my parents and I see Dr. Houston. He is very honest and is concerned with the pet's comfort and quality of life vs. the owners desires. When I moved to Japan with my ex-husband Dr. Houston remotely treated my cat Oki that I had adopted in Japan.. He has now been Oki's vet for 16 years! The services are costly but well worth it.

A new owner and adopter took dog for a 'wellness' check only. Ended up doing medical procedures unnecessary, previously done. Did not review copies of all medical charts, test results and documentation from two Vets prior to wellness examination. Not familiar with new ear protocol and treatments. Told NOT to do procedure, as dog was under treatment for 3 weeks, by both new owner and administering Veterinarian's office. Went ahead anyway and negated procedure a Vet had done 2 days prior. Diagnoisis inappropriate based upon dog's background, previous Vet treatment, test results, medical charts presented, perscribed treatment protocol, etc. Billed new owner for medication, tests, and bathing supplies unnecessary and unwarranted.

Dr. Grafton Houston is excellent! He doesn't try to upsell like some other vets do. He recommended spacing out shots to avoid mixing too many meds at one time. He gave me a list of medications I can buy over the counter to give to my dog for her allergies instead of trying to sell me an expensive prescription. (I wouldn't have known the difference!) Then he showed me a pic of the dog he just rescued from being put to sleep when we were discussing my dog's skin irritations (the newly adopted dog needed some TLC and was in the office getting much needed help)! Talk about a vet after your heart! Yes it is expensive but it is comparable to any other vet I've been to. I'm a fan!

We have been going to Dr. Houston/staff for the past 5 years. When we first started I was not impressed with the staff being slow to get you in for your appointment. HOWEVER, a few years ago everything changed. They have become the most attentive staff and helpful in every way. Our rat terrier started having behavior problems, so we thought we should take him to a phycologist, we mentioned this to Dr Houston and he wanted to do a couple of tests to see if their was any physical problems before going (since the phycologist was very expensive). We found out our rattie had a tumor on his pituitary gland, the Dr. prescribed medication for this problem. The rattie stopped having issues at home, it was physical.
We have seen other vets at his office who are equally as caring and competent for our other dogs too.
Since we adopt rescue dogs (older) we see a lot of the vets. I highly recommend this office for your pet. They are caring people (follow up phone calls after any procedure) and the staff is terrific. They are a little more expensive, but the experience of Dr. Houston and staff are well worth it.
(we have tried many vets over the years, the only other office I would recommend would be the La Jolla Veterinary Hospital on Fay St in La Jolla)

I took my pet to PHT because my vet was not available at the time and she was in pain. I was extremely disappointed in the Dr. that saw my pet. She did not do a complete exam on her and I left there paying a big bill without knowing what was wrong with my pet. Sorry but i can not recommend this vet to anyone. I thought I was seeing Dr. Grafton but saw another Dr instead. What's up with that!!!!

I have been taking my two dogs to the Pet Hospital of Tierrasanta for over 7 years now, and I can't say enough nice things about them.

The entire staffs is genuinely friendly and REALLY care about the pets in their care. I have been to other vets from San Francisco, San Diego, and even Brazil?none can compare to the PHT.

Dr. Grafton Houston is my main vet at PHT and the care he gives, along with his professional knowledge, makes it all worth while. He never rushes his patients and no small detail is ever overlooked. He takes his time to explain treatments and causes and symptoms to the owners and I never feel like he??s rushing me out of the office to get to another appointment.

He never pushes needless treatments just to make a buck. Many times, he recommends the simplest of care and it is always the correct diagnosis.

In fact, the way Dr. Houston treats the patients and owners; I only wish my personal Doctor would take such care of me.

I have been taking my animals to the Pet Hospital for about 15 years. Dr Houston and his staff are all wonderful caring people and I would recommend them to anyone. They all have a true love of animals and a wonderfully understanding appreciation of pet owners
emotions.

I always say you get what you pay for and with this vet it's so true! As the owner/slave to 2 basset hounds I sought a vet knowledgable in the breed. Dr. Houston was recommended to me by San Diego Basset Hound Rescue and he definitely knows his stuff. When my hound, Rupert, recently swallowed a foreign object we went straight to Dr. Houston. He wasn't quick to charge and run tests, he merely did xrays and said to return the following day to see if the object had moved. When it hadn't moved he gave us several options, surgery being his recommendation. He gave us all the possibilities and understood it was a difficult (expensive) decision to make. When we did the surgery his staff catered to our needs and consistently followed up on his recovery. They even offered to let us do installment payments since it was pricey. With routine vetcare we use this vet also. Although they do charge more than other vets, you truly get what you pay for and will not be disappointed with the care your pet recieves from this office.

We decided to visit The Pet Hospital of Tierasanata after searching via the internet and reading reviews... thus it is absolutely necessary to explain why I would not recommend choosing this vet for your beloved pet(s). Do yourself and your pet a favor and try and find a more suitable vet.

Please.

Ok, the first visits were average although Dr. Grafton seemed less then honest regarding his knowledge of small animals (pet rattie in our case). We should have followed our initial gut reactions.

The last visit involved an extreme wait (understandable) prior to even being seen although we held an appointment. Then after being told 15 minutes more it was more like 1 hour. Don't get me wrong, I understand waiting (especially in any healthcare situation) but when you say 30 minutes try and keep it under an hour; if you can't say so or have someone explain.

After an x-ray we were to discuss doing additional tests so there was more waiting. Eventually, an assistant with incredibly poor service skills literally took our pet without explaining anything to us. Note, we hadn't discussed or committed to any procedures yet.

After 30 minutes or so of our pet undoubtedly being stressed out and our anticipation of someone addressing the situation another woman comes to us and says. "I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news..." Are you kidding me!!! This was absolutely ridiculous. She was referring to the fact that our rattie had not yet been seen and we'd be waiting longer.

Finally, Dr. Grafton came in diagnosing out rattie with fluid/substance in one side of her lungs. Ok? I then asked him which side the fluid was on.

He had no idea if the rattie was lying face up or face down for the x-ray. Thus, just "guessed" which side of the 250g rattie to stick a needle in. Not to mention the warns of pain and danger of doing such a procedure he mentioned so that we could think about it before HE decided to go ahead and do it.

Dr. Shatilla is a very compassionate man when it comes to his job. A very friendly place to bring your pets and at a reasonable price as well. In addition, the service is fast and there location is easy to get to. You can see it as you are driving on Santo. I would recommend this place if you are looking for a vet in the area of Tierrasanta.
