Small, hard to find, but incredible food. Bring cash and a big appetite. If you are unsure of the menu, the wait staff can provide excellent advice. Highly recommend.

I enjoy going to the House of Nanking whenever I am in San Francisco. Located in Chinatown, it's a great little hole in the wall where a menu is optional and getting the daily special is usually a pretty good option. If you've never been there, you might want to look at a menu but usually they come up to you and ask you if you would like pork, beef, or chicken and then they'll just make you the special, which is usually great. If you are on a budget and want a taste of Chinatown, I'd definitely recommend this restaurant. Go in on an afternoon or early evening to avoid the usual crowds.
PROS: Good food, fast service on weekdays
CONS: a tad greasy, bring the antacids

I think this survives off some long ago reputation, which I never experienced. All the guide books recommend, and tourists swarm here. If you like greasy mediocre chinese food and a really long wait then come here and you wont be disapointed. Otherwise many other fine choices in Chinatown.
PROS: Good prices
CONS: Long lines of tourists, greasy food.

I know a million guide-books to San Francisco have said it already in every language known to man, but House of Nanking is one of the best places to eat in San Francisco for many good reasons, most namely that the food is excellent and the portions are ample. Get their fried potstickers in peanut sauce for an appetizer, then for a main course get their Nanking Sesame Chicken. It doesn't get much better than this, I'm telling you. The wait-staff is also laughably rude, which can be off-putting initially, but after a while only lends to the charm of the place (so long as they bring your food on time, which indeed they do).
