Incanto used to be a hang for me. Now they have smaller portions and it is heavily salted. The wait staff used to be spot on, now it feels like a to-go place. They used to honor the bring a bottle of wine and purchase a bottle of wine for a small group with no corkage fee. Their wine list is nice and extensive but, WAY overpriced. In addition to the corkage fee and lousy service; they add 5% on top of it all. Management was also ill-mannered. The place always being empty is a sign of its decline.

Pros: Nice atomsphere

I had been wanting to visit Incanto for quite some time. The chef has created a menu of great dishes using local and seasonal ingredients. Others complain that he serves filtered Hetch Hetchy water but I am glad he doesn't add to the recycled plastic and glass mess we already have. Each dish we had was fantastic from the Pig's trotter w' Foie Gras, Bacon & Roasted Plums to the Roasted Maitake Mushrooms we had for a side dish. Wine choices are all Italian and not familiar to most diners even if you think you know wine but corkage is reasonable and the wine picks at the end of the wine list are very good. I would recommend this place to everyone I know. I can't wait to go again because the menu changes on a regular basis so their is always new dishes to taste. By the way the best way to eat here is to share all the dishes with the tables.

I found Incanto to be OK but not great. Definitely over rated. I knew I was in for pretense when the menu stated that they served filtered Hetch Hetchy water. Any kitchen faucet in San Francisco and a Brita filter can produce filtered Hetch Hetchy water. False advertising. Pretense. San Francisco's tap water comes from Hetch Hetchy. I also found the food to be overly salty, especially the olive oil ice cream. The final insult was an added 5% kitchen service charge that was conveniently added to the check without telling the customer. I feel it is the responsibility of the restaurant to pay the kitchen help -- not the customer. The decor was pleasant. The service friendly and competent. It was overpriced and not worth it.

Pros: Nice atmosphere. Good wine by the glass.

Cons: Pretense. Over priced. Salty. $3.00 charge for olive oil to dip your bread in was ridiculous. Filtered water claim and unadvertised 5% kitchen tip were unacceptable.

.

Shoot, I didn't notice this 5% charge that people below are talking about. But we had a great experience, nice friendly waiter who let me taste the wine I'd asked about (and nice glassware). Liked the bustling room and enjoyed our meal: asparagus app, pasta and pork loin plus ginger cake w/ caramel sauce and gelato for dessert. $90 for that plus 2 beers, tax and tip isn't bad.

We had a reservation for a birthday party at 5:30 pm on Sunday for 11 people . At 8 pm they basically kicked us out telling that there is another party waiting for the same room.
At first we felt like they are rushing us a bit with food. Waiters would try to take plates before we even done with the meal. Then waiter spilled wine opening a bottle (now I guess he was in rush too). They brought us a check without us asking for it. We never had some reasonable time just to drink wine and talk. All in all, we felt like we've visited some cheap chinese place for lunch. My wife and I are definitely not going back even though the food was good.

Went to dinner with couple of friends on a Friday night. After telling the waiter twice we weren't ready to order because we wanted to check out the entire menu, the waiter did not return for 20 minutes. After finally getting his attention, he told us "one second" and returned 5 minutes later and said, "Now, where were we?" We were hungry, that's where we were. He didn't seem to care too much maybe it was because only one of us was drinking wine. Also, you don't get bread until you order like most other finer Italian restaurants. Maybe the 5% service charge (pre-tip) makes them think they don't need to FULLY earn your tip by providing excellent service. The food was decent enough but a little on the expensive side.

Taking the whole experience into consideration, I would not return. There are restaurants that treat you far better and earn their full tip.

Pros: Food is good, Nice decor, sparkling and tap water

Cons: Service, service, service, service, service. (one time for each % service charge)

.

Very disappointing. The restaurant adds a 5% service charge to the bill for their staff. Very tacky - why don't they just raise their prices? Probably because they are already too high. Food was boring to bad. My crab pasta was so fishy I couldn't eat it. The waiter never even checked or noticed that my plate remained full. Same of our appetizer, which we did not eat.

wine and ambiance were nice, but the overall experience was disappointing.

It's like to go to Chez Panisse cafe without the hype. Everything is good there, pasta, salad, seafood dishes. That's where i learnt to love beets: multi-color, not too sweet, tasty and not mushy. It's a place i'd go often if i could afford. The wine list is impressive. You cannot keep yourself from trying some new wines, and that make the check higher...then that makes you think twice before going.

Pros: Good and simple straightforward food, there's enough room for conversation

Cons: Expensive if you elected it as your cantine

For my money, if I want to go to a place where I know what to expect, Incanto is on the short list. Some dishes are terrific, others average, but you get the sense with every visit that they take pride in their craft, and I appreciate that. It's a very refreshing, particularly in this era where people think minimalist decor, loud music and arrogant staff can compensate for subpar food. There aren't too many SF restaurants that can match their effort level on a consistant basis. The wine list is truly memorable and the servers I've dealt with have been very cordial.
It's not a perfect dining experience and the pricing scheme is a bit steep, but for a rustic Italian venue, you'd be hard pressed to find too many places that are better than Incanto.

I've been here many times & just went again recently after being away for awhile. It was yummy as always. If you want some delicious authentic style italian food, good wine and in a lovely setting - this is it.

If you are into Italian wine then nothing compares to Incantos wine bar. They have an excellent selection of wines by the glass. I found the food to be consistently solid during all of my five or six visits. On my recent visit I had excellent dishes such as sardines with radishes and olive oil, cold squab with pine nuts and raisins and a wonderful blood sausage and egg appetizer served in an iron skillet. Desserts are good, not great.

My boyfriend and I went to Incanto last weekend-what a disappointment! The food wasn't bad, per se, it was just that it was extremely overpriced and certainly nothing exceptional. We each started with a salad, one of which was over $9 and consisted of about 5 lettuce leaves and 2 "vegetable shavings" (read: 2 pieces of vegetable that were thinner than paper!). Very unimaginative and EXTREMELY overpriced! My entree was equally as disappointing-I ordered the vegetarian option -While costing around $18, my entree consisted of 4 stalks of asparagus, 8 or 9 fava beans, and a fried egg! To top it off was the 5% "service fee" charged (indicated in small print at the bottom of the menu for the "kitchen staff"). You'd think that, charging these prices, they could afford to pay their kitchen staff fairly!?? Skip this place and head to somewhere like A16 !

I truly enjoyed my food and atmostphere experience at Incanto, but one thing seemed to downgrade the quality of the restaurant. At the bottom of the menu is text that states that 5% will be added to your bill to basically tip the kitchen staff who is not otherwised tipped. Hmmm, I've worked in restaurants in the past and as a server we tipped our busboys and bartenders, but usually not kitchen staff. If these guys are not getting paid enough then maybe mgmt needs to address the issue instead of putting it on the customer. On a positive note, the cured meats are fabulous so you must try the antipasto!

This was my 6th visit to Incanto on Church St. In Noe Valley. The food is usually good, but nothing to write home about. We go because it's an easy walk down the street and the have a nice wine list. This visit took the prize however. I ordered a half order of ravioli, which was good, but was served four 3/4" x 1" ravioli on my plate. No garnish, that's it. Laughable.

My husband took me here for birthday dinner - he'd been before with some chef friends and with his parents and they all enjoyed the food and atmosphere. The maitre d was great - sat us early at a pleasant table. Unfortunately, a horrible server ruined it for us. He leaned over us saying "yummy!" several times, but never checked in otherwise. He then proceeded to send my surprise cake to another table. When the other couple realized, THEY came over to apologize and wish me well, but the waiter did nothing! No desert, no comp - not a word. I wanted to complain more, but didn't out of respect for my husband who was trying to plan a nice evening for me. We won't go back and neither will our friendstoo many other restaurants to visit!

The room feels like a fake Italian farm house that you would find in Disneyland. The food unfurtanely is as fake as the decor. Yes some dishes can be tasty but the chef is more interested in doing creative ingredient combinations than on how the food tastes. Italian food is about simplicity and not having to use too many ingredients, had the chef left my ravioli with just broth and not added leaves of arugula, it would have been very good, but not he has to go adding extra stuff to make it look pretty. Wine list is the only saving grace of this restaurant. Too bad, the servers are clueless about the list. For the same price, cross the bridge and go to Olivetto instead to get true Italian food and not Cal-Italian.

Authentic italian food in this off-the-beaten-track restaurant. The chef comes from Chez Pannise, the Sommalier was imported from Italy (along with the wines), and the owner is there every day in this elegant new restaurant. The service is exceptional--nice and knowledgable professional wait staff.

I just ate there again (September 2005) and it was superb. Try the cheese plate as a starter (it's only on the dessert menu). The steak was SUPERB, and the desserts are to die for.

One of the best meals I've eaten in ages--all with perfect service and attention to detail.

I'm confussed? I walked into a neighbor Italian restaurant in the working class neighborhood of Noe Valley. My expectations where of a simple straight forward trattoria... you know, warm greetings, attentive servers, good wine and flavorful food. WHAT HAPPENED???! A sloppy hostess, wait staff that looked every where but at their tables, over prices wine and dishes that lacked all the fussion their thought demanded. Is it possible to add injury to insult? At Incanto, YES! A 5% service charge on a party of 2. All this for just 5% gratuity. I suppose so, or do you think they are hoping for you to over look this SMALL matter?! Or is this all they know their service is worth! ATTENTION: SCRUTINIZE YOU CHECK!!! Better off skip this joint all together.

Back in 2003 when the Top 100 was compiled Im sure this place was a colossus, but it is nothing more than a shadow of its former self. Obviously, something recently happened to this much hyped, towering pillar of San Franciscos Italian cuisine. Did it change hands? Did the Chef and wine Sommelier leave town? Whatever happened happened and the problems run deep. Unfortunately, the food was almost as bad as the wine. Boring and uneventful. The wait, however, was worse. 1 hour and 20 minutes passed between the starter and the main course before the Entree hit the table. The staff were inattentive and ignored polite nods for service. Seriously, if youre thinking of eating here, do yourself a favor and get a cheap Chinese takeaway instead - you'll wish you had.

I have been going to Incanto since in opened 2 years ago and the food is better than ever. I love the Cavatelli with house made guanciale and the fig and tomato salad was awesome too. The chef is curing his own meats and sometimes they offer things like lardo, salami and mortadella. I will definately keep Incanto on my short list of neighborhood eateries.

I was very disappointed with my recent dining experience at Incanto. Although the decor is quite impressive, and the hostess was very pleasant, I was underwhelmed by just about everything else, particularly the food. The Antipasto for two was both boring and expensive. A very strange concoction of unappetizing items thrown together. Having grown up in an Italian household, I know of what I speak. The breadsticks were the best part of it. The fish dish I ordered as my entree was grossly undercooked--I don't recall ordering Sushi, not to mention tasteless. I would suggest Michael Bauer rethink his list of Top 100 Restaurants. This restaurant is certainly not deserving of such a lofty postion in a city/bay area known for it's outstanding cuisine.

What a pleasant surprise. This place is not only a great neighborhood restaurant, it is one of the best Italian places in the City. The wine list is superb, with plenty to choose from in the moderate and high-end price ranges. Also a great value (unless you are the sort to whine about spending $75 for dinner for two). Great ambience (although a bit noisy when it's full) and good service as well. The cuisine is similar to Napa stalwarts Tra Vigne and Don Giovani, and equally well executed. Bravo!

Incanto is in my neighborhood, so I've been there countless times. The food is consistently great. Innovative, with classic roots, great ingredients, and well executed. Prices are fair for the quality of food. Service can sometimes be quirky, but I've grown fond of that as well. Worth taking a trip across town. Also.. they are always busy, and yet it is almost always possible to get a walk-in table.

Everything about my time at Incanto was wonderful. The restaurant is beautiful, but has a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere. Couldn't wait to try this new restaurant in my 'hood based on the user reviews I read. In short, I shouldn't have to pay $75 for dinner for two for bland food and spotty service. Hostess was very friendly but server was M.I.A. for the latter half of the meal. Both the branzino (bass) and porchetta (pork belly--which was tough and chewy) lacked any flavor. Had to ask for seasonings. Dessert (panna cotta) was very good but also very small (2 bites!). Highlight of the meal were the wines. Save your money and go to another new Italian joint, The Last Supper Club.

Had to ask for seasonings. Dessert (panna cotta) was very good but also very small (2 bites!). Highlight of the meal were the wines. Save your money and go to another new Italian joint, The Last Supper Club.

Pros: wine list, friendly hostess, good location

Cons: bland food, spotty service, overpriced

.

Kept meaning to stop by this restaurant located in my 'hood and finally did one Friday evening. Found out that they won the Best Wine List in America for the casual dining category. Pretty impressive for a neighborhood joint. The food, like the wine list, was just as impressive. I'll definitely come back.

Valentine's Day was perfect. Not only did we have a wonderful server, but the food was outstanding. My honey, the seafood connoisseur, claimed Incanto's sea bass was the best he's ever had. Our server was purely delightful in his knowledge of their mostly foreign wine list. He made our romantic night comfortable and elegant at the same time. We are definitely recommending Incanto to all of our friends. One more thing - on our way out the door (we were the last table to go), the manager caught us and shared the romantic tale of how the restaurant got it's name... and then bade us a Happy Valentine's Day. Absolutely unbeatable.....

I've visited at least a half dozen times, and can always count on an enjoyable experience from beginning to end. The food is obviously prepared with attention and care. Service is exceptional, especially when it comes to help with choosing wine. And the recently added tapestries are perfect, making the main dining room feel even warmer, while helping to soften the noise when the room is full. I've enjoyed the changes with the seasons and look forward to the menu's transition to Spring.

I've been to Incanto a number of times and am always pleasantly surprised at the constant improvements to the menu. Our table shared the penne for our primo (don't know who wrote about the uncooked penne but they obviously don't know the concept of al dente) and it was cooked to perfection. I then ordered duck for my secondo and was equally satisfied. As usual, the wines that accompanied our dishes were outstanding.

Went to dinner there with some friends and had a wonderful time! I had the duck leg with pears on a bed of cabbage that was so scrumptious I almost wanted another serving. The atmosphere is elegant yet so comfortable, we lost track of time and stayed for hours. Our server had the wonderful qualities of being both pleasant and knowledgeable. Overall a terrific experience!

I got there a little early and decided to wait for my friends at the bar. I was greeted by the bartender with a warm smile and was soon discussing the merits of their intriguing wines by the glass list. I was soon compelled to order the "mystery flight" where I was introduced to three really good Italian wines. My friends finally came and we were seated in the smaller dining room. I ordered the chicken; my friends ordered the steak and the pork. We all shared our plates and agreed that we had found a great restaurant. I will definitely come back to Incanto!

Went there with another couple and we loved it. The place had the buzz of a downtown joint right in the hood. Thats' nice because the commute is easier. Too bad there is no valet parking or something. Great wine list and knowledgeable servers. Excellent food. Not a cheap, quiet neghborhood place, but that's OK. Will shoot for reservations in the back room next time as it seems more intimate and quiet/private.

Cons: Noisy Out Front, Parking Tough

This is an update to a prior review I posted. I've now eaten at Incanto several times, and each time have been more impressed with the "total package." As some reviewers have noted, the menu does not offer an "ad infinitum" number of choices, which I feel is a plus - it is a thoughtful menu, and having tried a number of the appetizers and entrees, I have yet to be disappointed. The calibre of both preparation, presentation and service is top-notch. Having travelled a fair amount in Italy, this place comes closest to the best neighborhood trattoria/ristorante I've experienced there as anywhere I've eaten in this country. The noise level in the large dining room is louder than I like, but overall, the food, wine and service have more than compensated for this. Ask to be seated in the smaller dining room if you want a more subdued ambience.

My boyfriend & I had dinner here recently. There was 1 veggie entree which didn't sound appetizing so I asked for substitutions. The waitress suggested the penned minus the meat which I went for. Needless to say, it was totally flavorless and completely unimaginative. Gross is a compliment to this pasta. The waitress finally came back after about 20 minutes and I told her how dissatisfied I was but she didn't offer any suggestions or apologize. She just said that that's the way it is minus the meat! I couldn't believe she recommended it & then admitted that she knew it would be disgusting. I was extremely unhappy. I won't even go into my boyfriends roasted chicken which was just as flavorless. I will never return and I have told everyone I know not to go to Incanto.and I

Pros: Good location

Cons: no vegetarian options, too expensive

The decor is very nice...the wine pretty good as well, but time we went for a birthday, our waiter seemed irritated with our table..probably because we were a party of 10?? Also, they need a bigger variety on their menu..only one chicken dish and not much for a vegan if they want to go and try your food.

I can't really say anything bad about the food, but we didn't come away doing cartwheels. There were not many unusual items on the menu and our server, while professional, rarely smiled. We shared the sardine appetizer, which came on top of a wonderful frisee salad. I ordered the lemon pasta with petrale sole. The fish was tender and the pasta al dente. Of the desserts, try the olive oil cake, which is really moist and served with a great zabaglione sauce. The current risotto tart was a little more unusual and also pretty good. Again, pretty standard fare and pretty good food but nothing to venture out for if you're not in the neighborhood.

A wonderful new addition to Noe Valley. We had a wonderful dinner here. The waitress was extremely knowledgeable about our wine; service was helpful and attentive but never intrusive. Desserts were out of this world. We'll be coming back!

The wine selection here was fantastic, and the wait staff was very helpful both in the selection of entrees and the wine itself. The food varied from your "standard" Italian fare of pasta in red sauce, but the menu was inventive, and the cannoli was superb.

I really hate to give a negative review. BUT Incanto just doesnt live up to its gorgeous interior. Appetizerz like tomatos and buffalo mozzarella were boring at best and the roast chicken was weakly spiced and dry.

If your going to do this kind of food in SF you have to try lots harder. Dessert was decent but again just standard. If you want good italian in Noe Valley got to Bacco.

Service started out good but went downhill quickly. The wine list is nice but insultingly overpriced.

Read the positive review in Chronicle, and as I am a Noe Valley resident, I decided to give it a try. Not impressed..seem to have paid more attention to exterior and interior structural improvements than getting food right.

Had an average appetizer, decent bottle of wine for 50 bucks, and for the main course I had a slab of salmon adequately done and my girlfriend has penne, which was prepared unimaginatively and undercooked. Well undercooked.

Would have done better saving a few bucks on the stone work on outside of place and hiring a Sunday night chef who cooked do pasta. It is supposed to be an Italian restaurant, after all. More Noe valley hyped semi-crap

Incanto is my favorite new restaurant in years. The owner/host is gracious and friendly. Every dish I've tried in my two visits has been flawless. The menu changes frequently, and everything tastes fresh and exciting. The simple dish of penne pasta with tomatos and cheese melted on top was so good that I was still thinking about it days later. The ribeye steak, which appears to be a regular item, was done to perfection. The wine list is first-rate, and the staff helps with selections. My only small complaint is that the menu on any given evening is not particularly large. But there's plenty to tempt you, so that's not a big worry. Go and enjoy this place before it's overrun.

Good food, knowledgable staff, great ambience, but it was a bit steep for the portions. I don't mind spending a ton of dough if I leave full, but I had to get a Krispy Kreme from the liquor store across the street for desert. The food was good, I had the pearl pasta in a nice light sauce, and my girlfriend had the seabass, but I don;t feel we got a value. The spinach salad is excellent and the antipasto plate was delicious, but I left feeling a bit light in the stomach and the wallet. Great wine selection too.

The food tasted good, but they offered nothing out of the ordinary, and not enough dishes on the menu. Granted I have only eaten there once, but I just wasn't inspired to return. The barren walls and minimal decor makes for a loud, cavernous atmosphere. If you do check it out, ask for a reservation in the quiet, cozy room in the back. It's closer to the toilets, but seemed like a much better place to be seated. Oh, and the service was sloth-like.

Incanto is marvelous! The food is fresh and imaginative. The owner, Mark, treats ever diner as though they were guests in his own home at one of his famous Pasta Fests. The ambiance is warm and inviting - a perfect place for that first date or a family celebration. Don't miss it.

Soon to be a hot spot get some now while it's still easy! Sat in the back room against the wall of wines. Small but well executed menu. Each dish was well thought out and prepared with top notch fresh ingredients. A couple of the highlights were sauteed porcini's with arugula, tuna and swordfish bruschetta, grilled ribeye with crashed potatoes and sauteed greens, and an outstanding cheese plate with cured grapes and walnuts. Service was non intrusive but professional and the ambience is elegant but comfortable with a slightly laid-back country note. The wine program here could very well end up being the strong suit. With over twenty wines by the glass all of wich are available in 1/2 litre and a bottle list of around 150 wines. Ninety per cent of the list is Italian and all significant regions are represented, including Southern Italy and the islands.
