cheap, fast chinese

by Andrew H. | insider Insider | Rank: 23,132

this is definitely a great location for you, the hungry college student who seeks decent chinese food late night. not in the mood for mexican or appetizers at TGIF, then this is one of your best bets.

PROS: has a great late-night menu
CONS: to use late-night menu, u need to be able to speak or understand mandarin

Hotpot

by Daniel H. | insider Insider | Rank: 32,696

One of the few places you can go to in San Diego to hot pot. Food is ok. Prices aren't too bad. If you're going there to hot pot, make sure you call before coming in because it's not available everyday.

very good

by Jack Y. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 9,138

This is one of the cheapest and most yummiest chinese restaurants to go to. Not only is the food authentic chinese, it is also extremely reasonably priced. They also have random happy hours in which dishes are a dollar off. The wait is usually about 15 minutes but it is well worth it. The only complaint in which I have of this fine chinese cuisine is that their menus are outdated. I have oftentimes ordered dishes in which the restaurant no longer offered.

great family style chinese food

by Catherine T. | insider Insider | Rank: 24,150

the cuisine here is excellent, but if you want to order off the special, cheaper menu, make sure to bring someone along who can read/speak Mandarin. i recommend the house special chow mein.

Good Eats

by Diana N. | insider Insider | Rank: 21,439

Nice place for family-style Chinese food. My favorite dish is the Shanghai noodles, used to be only $5 but now it's $6, still worth it. They have a special after 9:30pm menu but bring someone that can read it. Some dishes not as good as other, but all worth a try. Waitresses are friendly and pretty good about refilling your water, compared to other places.

Fussy Staff, good food

by Ting W. | insider Insider | Rank: 14,407

Shanghai City is excellent, simply because its open past midnight! Finally, a place to eat late at night, that doesn't also serve pancakes. Many people go here simply for the hot pot experience, where you cook meat/vegetables in broth. Eating this family style, an average meal will only cost you $7 and leave you feeling very stuffed. Prices are decent and become even cheaper late at night. Try the pepper salt pork chops. The staff resembles those at most Chinese restaurants. Competent, but nicer if you can speak Mandarin, and will still appear to be rushing you through your meal.

PROS: Good food, cheap, open late at night
CONS: Staff can be rude sometimes

Truly authentic Chinese cuisine

by Tiffany P. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,423

When my grandparents came to visit from Hong Kong, this is where we took them for a little taste of home. Shanghai City is one of the rare authentic Chinese food restaurants in San Diego. It is reminiscent of Chinese restaurants in Asian hubs found in larger cities like San Francisco and Seattle, from the family style dinner dishes to the overall atmosphere, though I am certainly thankful that the noise level is not as loud.
