Mijares is a Pasadena Institution. Love their food. This place is ususally bustling. Don't come here if you want quiet and intimate.- Mijares is better for family gatherings and other group get-togethers. Try the juevos con chorizo. Great margaritas too -- especially El Presidente. Generous servings of guacamole. Chips are a bit thick and hard to chew, so dont bring your grandma. Also, service can be hit or miss. Still, for a fun time, ya gotta love Mijares.

We had scheduled a party in their banquet room. Maria was very helpful in helping us arrange everything. For a group of 60, it was perfect! The room is small and cozy, which kept it personal. We chose the chicken fajitas and carnitas michoacan for the menu. It was very delicious and plentiful! Margarita's were awesome too! We received alot of compliments on the food and restaurant choice. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. For a last minute party, it was also very reasonably priced. Don't really recommend that your group gets any larger than 60-70 though, because it'll just get too cramped. We attended a function there once with just over 100 ppl and it was very uncomfortable.
THANK YOU SO MUCH MIJARES FOR EVERYTHING!

Pros: Nice banquet area for smaller groups

Cons: Parking lot is small

I ate there and ordered the steak fajitas. I have eaten many fajitas at many other establishments and this one at Mijares by far is the smallest and most expensive one I have ever had. After I ate it I was still hungry and went to In-n-Out to eat. I will never go back to Mijares. I would rather go to El Torito or even Chipotle for that matter.

Pros: I just don't know

Cons: There are far better Mexican establishments out there.

The things I like about Mijares include their margaritas, their friendly staff, and the patios. I've dined here for dinner with my husband...had cocktails with a small group of friends, and enjoyed large family functions. I've also had good takeout...since it's right next door to a jewelry studio where I take classes. Their food is always consistently good...their drinks always consistently excellent. The staff here is more than friendly, and always accommodating. Take note that A LOT of people know this...and they ALL come here. It's difficult to find parking...unless you get their VERY early or are absolutely lucky to catch someone pulling out of a parking spot. Even with that drawback...I say give it a try. Visit Mijares and enjoy a margarita for me.

I took two friends from out of town to this place upon the recommendation of my husband. He hadn't eaten there in several years, but I figured it would be fine. I was so embarrassed. These two people had never been to Los Angeles before and were looking forward to some authentic Mexican cuisine, something that they can't really find in Portland, their home town. Because they are good friends, they were honest with me when I asked them if they liked the food, commenting that mine was definitely sub-standard. They agreed completely, saying that the food was too bland and you couldn't tell one item from another based upon the flavor. Additionally, the rice was dry and flavorless, as was the chicken, the tamales were so dry that I thought the corn husk was still attached, and the steak was tough and didn't quite taste like beef. The bill? $103.00 (not including tip) for three meals, three margaritas and two desserts with coffee. Way overpriced considering the quality of the food. I would happily pay that and more for really tasty food. This was not.

Well we decided to try this place on a whim and it was not worth it. This restaurant is not athentic, its more of a El Torrito type restaurant. My Cheese and Chicken enchiladas were very tasteless, sauce was bland, chicken was dry as well, good thing the Guacamole had some taste. My friend ordered the Chile Colorado and he would not touch it again after a bite, I having a more open mind to taste tried it and found it Horrible. The sauce was watered down and the meat just tasted bad. Will not ever go back to this place.

I agree with the other user, go to Olvera st., Luz de Dia* is very good! handmade corn tortillas!

I came because the margaritas had been highly recommended; I left disappointed.

Yes, the margaritas are strong, but not particularly flavorful. The chips are tough and boring. My fish tacos were very tasty, but the vegetables they came with were severely underdone. And the prices! Two fish tacos, with rice -- no beans! -- and vegetables, for over $14!

The service was disappointing, too. I ordered two margaritas; each time I asked for them with salt, but they came with no salt. I was still working on my appetizer when my entre was plunked down in front of me. The waiter never checked back at all; I practically had to trip him if I wanted anything.

The mariachis were good, though.

So the bottom line is, why bother? why not go to El Cholo, which is just blocks away, or Chevy's?

The margaritas are great and so is the guacamole (the large guacamole easily feeds 6 people as an appetizer). The ribeye stake with shrimp is delicious and the kids dishes are very well served. The ambiance for dinner is very nice and the food is served promptly. It's a great family restaurant.

PROS: Great staff, great food, great margaritas
CONS: none

Mijare's is a fun place for a company outing - it is festive, the margaritas are good, and there is plenty of space for a large party. The food is decent, too.

Jesusita Mijares A young teenage bride, found herself widowed and alone. 1900's she immigrated to California looking for new life. With the help of her husband, Antonio Mijares. She would wake a 3am to make tortillas. Now tables were added, rooms build and patios poured to accomodate hundreds of guest daily. This place is anything but plain. It has old style Ambiance and the food are Jesusita's recipes from Guadalajara, Mx. Authentic, Family Oriented and can accomodate anyone.
Cinco de Mayo is only one of the many occasions for celebration at Mijares. The Best Food, Margaritas, Hospitality and graciousness is why Paul McCartney & wife Heather Miles, Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Costner, Kathy Varga chanel 7 visits weekly.

Cons: parking

I grew up eating traditional mexican food --went to Mijares and was extremely dissappointed --first clue should have been how enourmous the place was--everything about it was bad, food, service, cost. Worst place I've ever eaten in Pasadena. And Pasadena has GREAT restaurants, I'm sticking to Olvero St.

The margaritas are strong and the food unmemorable, which seems to be a pretty common combination in LA.

That's not to say that the food is bad. It's perfectly ordinary, unobjectionable Mexican food -- the kind you can get at dozens of other similar sombrero and maraca-festooned restaurants.

Keep your expectations low and you'll be pleasantly surprised by Mijares.

My family has been coming to Mijares for over 35 years and never gets tired of it. Pasadenans know it is a great place to come with children are young, for large groups, for diner on the patio. Love the George's Special margarita - really smooth. I always have Nachos Especial or Taco Salad. Salsa is always fresh. Staff is friendly and service is good.

If it wasn't for my dining companions I would've left this restaurant before we sat down and ate somewhere else. I couldn't believe how rude both of the hostesses were. It got me so mad how we were treated I lost my appetite. Our waiter wasn't very attentive. I always get dragged here. I refuse to go back with my friends! Frankly I would rather stay home, eat a bland TV dinner and watch bad infomercials than go back!

This place has wonderful Tortilla Soup and the outdoor patio can't be beat. It's a great local place. The other dishes are pretty basic Mexican, not that there is anything wrong with that. If you're looking for nouveau, California-Mex than this isn't the place to find it, but there's plenty of other dishes to check out. Good vegetarian selection too.

I highly recommend trying their Tortilla soup.
It is mildly spicy and chock full of goodness... chucks of fresh chicken, avocado, chucks of some kind of tasty Mexican cheese and lots of fresh vegetables. A bowl of this is practically a meal. Good for those cold nights.

Mijares has great Mexican food & margaritas. I especially like the dump burrito. The restaurant is loud and better suited for large parties or groups. Outside seating is nice on a warm evening. The music is pretty loud, but it's very authentic Mexican. We've done lots of birthday parties and celebrations there. Great place to eat and drink!

Just went to the original El Cholo's and was mostly dissapointed, thank god I can always come back to Mijares. The outdoor patio dining area is one of the best in So. Cal., and it has heaters too. The banquet areas are impeccable, especially "Jesucitas Patio" a private outdoor patio area with lots of peaceful charm. I bartended for 6 years and have had margaritas from all over the western U.S. I feel the "Hand-Shaken" with either Patron Plata or 3 Generations Plata on the rocks, is one of the best margaritas I have ever had. The service was great, ask for either Aldo or Bert, their the best !!!. I ordered the Baja Special, which was awesome. My wife always gets the Chicken Fajitas, which is equally good, you can taste the hint of wine in the dish. I might stray temporarily, but I always come back.

"George's Special" Margaritas are smooth and excellent. I recommend them on the rocks. It has a beautiful banquet room for parties. It looks very festive when it is decorated. I love dining on the patio at night. It's cool, refreshing, and quieter than inside the restaurant. It is like being in a different world. I think the best menu item is the Lobster and Shrimp Enchiladas. It is my personal favorite.

If you too are on the quest for the best margarita, you must stop by Mijares and have one of George's Specialties. You will not regret it. Sit at the bar and watch the master at work. This place is so relaxing and welcoming. Even if it's your first time, you feel like you're a regular. The food and service are great and Tom treats you like you are a part of the family.

The margaritas are big, the chips and salsa keep coming, and the patio is grande, with plenty of heaters. So year-round Mijares is one of the best places in Pasadena for outdoor dining with friends. Standouts include the albondiga soup and the snapper sauteed in tomatoes and onions. Ask them to trim any fat from the carnitas.
