4 Stars: Wonderful Sauce (by sjw08)

I had the Tri Tip! I was so good. I ordered a baked potato and broccoli on the side. Being a broccoli lover, I was not impressed with how hard and tastless it was. I won't be ordering that again. The garlic rolls were ok, but I will try this place again to try different dishes from the menu. It wasn't bad at all. Just get what suits your tastes!

5 Stars: Amazing Tri Tip (by Jimmy890)

Last evening, my wife and I stopped for dinner at the Wood Ranch in Agoura on the way home from Ventura. It is now 4p the following day and I'm still thinking about the tri tip I had last night. I'm 48 years old, I've traveled the country (including road trips across Texas) and this was easily the best piece of BBQ beef I have ever eaten. I ordered the meat medium as the server suggested. The generous portion was lean, flavorful, juicy and tender. I would easily take this Tri Tip over many of the fillets I have enjoyed over the last several years. The staff was friendly and the service excellent. If the food is inconsistent as other reviewers have suggested, then we caught a very lucky break.

I took a date to this place and she had the Natalie's salad. She loved it. I had the Grilled Vegetable Salad and added chicken. The grilled veggies had a little bit of smoke flavor. Nothing better!

1 Stars: what happened? (by maybell)

My husband and I have been coming here at least once and week and ordering the roasted vegetable salad among other items. we went there tonight and they had changed the menu and now the salad was awful. I don't know who the chef is but he or she needs to wake up and stop trying to be innovative. If it's not broken don't fix it!

5 Stars: Try the BBQ Sauce!! (by acemanLA)

This place is pretty amazing. I started with a VERY cold beer (go for the larger one... upon recomendation of the server... good choice). And had an amazing BBQ Beef sandwich. Portions are very generous. I have been to the one in Agoura (the original) and this one is just as great. Easier to get a seat though.

Very good BBQ, consistent results.

4 Stars: One of the better restaurants in the Grove (by joanovarq)

This place is hitt or miss. Recently I had was craving a good steak, and I came to Wood Ranch and ordered the rib eye; it was extremely delicious, tender, juicy and perfectly seasoned. I also highly recommend their scrumptious fresh-baked rolls, are covered in a thin film of olive oil and garlic. I've had other meals from their lunch menu that did not impress me as much; once I got the tri-tip and it was cold in the middle. Perhaps the issue is that their "cheap" lunch menu isn't as good as their full-price dinner menu? Also, they don't validate parking which stinks considering that they are located in the Grove.

3 Stars: Tasty, but.... (by Amanda C.)

The ambiance, great. But when you order the 'signature dish' (in this case, their tri-tip) one expects it to be more meat than fat. Both my husband and I were disappointed to find that more than the usual fat was attached to ours. So while it was very tasty, it wasn't really a lot for what you were paying for.

I guess a good way to get around this is to order the tri-tip sandwich and skip the dinner portion. Far less coin, and most likely just as much in the meat department.

4 Stars: I love the steak salad! (by Natalie L.)

The steak salad here is amazing! It combines healthy veggies and greens with lean steak. I'm not sure which dressing it comes with, but I always ask for vinagrette on the side. The prices are reasonable- about $15 total, so it's an expensive lunch, but good priced dinner. Plus it's at the Grove!

4 Stars: Everyone is picky about what kind of BBQ sauce they like, but Wood Ranch is more than just about the sauce... (by vsusa)

I like Wood Ranch's BBQ sauce. And I like some other restaurants' sauces too. So if you are too picky about your darn sauce, you might not like Wood Ranch. But if you like all kinds of different sauches, give it a try. Wood Ranch's meats are excellent and so are their sides and breads. The portions are are quite big and it's not exactly cheap, so I recommending splitting everything. For the non-red meat eaters, the "Santa Fe Chicken Sandwich" is very good (barbecued chicken breast topped with mozzarella, lettuce, tomato, cilantro and Ranch dressing on a country brioche bun). Also the "America?s Best BBQ Tri Tip Sandwich" is excellent (thinly sliced trip tip simmered in BBQ sauce on a French baguette). The tri tip is very moist and they give you a lot. It's so good you need to take some off the sandwich and eat individual bites with a fork-- and you can do this a lot and still have a lot left on your sandwhich! The bread rolls you get with your dishes are delicious. Regarding side dishes, the cole slaw is very tasty. It has peanuts in it which give it a nice crunch. As we all know, BBQ is messy and Wood Ranch has the best wet naps I've ever seen!

3 Stars: Not for Me! (by duanecobb)

Sorry, I prefer my barbecue a little more down home (i.e. Phillip's or Woody's). The sauce is too sweet and light on smokiness for me. However, as a typical Americana restaraunt the place is not so bad. They serve great cocktails as well. But in terms of BBQ I was underwhelmed.

This ain't no bbq shack! My ribeye was as good as the steaks I've had for double the price around town. Great value, fun atmosphere without the 'tude! Wood Ranch gets my two thumbs up!

When you go to the Grove, you know you're going to have to wait if you want to eat. Enter Wood Ranch!!! They're very quick with their seating. The staff was very friendly; from the person who took our name, to the person who sat us, to our server. They have the most AMAZING rolls with butter and garlic!!! There's also a great selection of salads and sides for vegetarians to pick from and well, of course, what they're known for: their steaks. Portions are huge, so you'll have some to eat the next day when you take it home.

I ordered the strip steak and my friend had the grilled salmon in a sort of bourbon-brown sugar glaze. Both were exceptional and we paid a lot less than we would have elsewhere. The salads were very fresh and we split a cheesecake for dessert that was too much for us and not overly sweet like many other places offer. Overall, this is a surprising and welcome addition to my list of places to go back and try other dishes. Pretty good wine list too. Great Orogeny Pinot Noir. Service was friendly and efficient, even though the place was jammed and there was a wait.

1 Stars: Bad Service and average food. (by mark05)

I know many enjoyed this palce, for me it was very average. First the serive was awful, i decdided to sit in near bar, the hostess told me to help our myselfs. When no waiter came to us and we had no menus for ten minutes. I went to the hostess stand and grabbed them myself, waited for another ten minutes no server came by. I want back to the host, who told me that it was'nt the bar and walked me any my party to a new table where we waited another ten minutes for a un-friendly server to come by. The salad was warm and the fork was chilled. But, ordered a burger my friend orderd bbq chicken. He said it was decent, mine was decent. we spent 25 each. So my opnion over priced, bad service, and okay food. I don't think i will ever be returning.

3 Stars: Good atmosphere, average food (by zildjian11)

I went with 6 people to celebrate a birthday. We were seated promptly and service was very good. Overall the food was average- ribs and burgers were a bit bland, tri-tip steak was pretty good. BBQ sauce definitely too sweet and watery (as other reviewers have said). Overall a good value and good atmosphere, conveniently located next to shopping, but don't make a special trip for the food.

5 Stars: Excellent Service and Food (by lagirlie323)

I went for my mom's birthday and even thought we didnt ask for it, the brought her some ice cream with candles in it. It was a nice finishing touch to a great dinner. I recommend the BBQ chicken dishes. The ribs are okay, stick with the pork ribs and stay away from the rotisserie. It's kind of bland. The side dishes are wonderful especially the baked beans. Go hungry and you will be more thank satisfied. I love this place but it tends to get really crowded so prepare for a long wait and do some browsing around the Grove mall while you wait. It's worth it.

I didn't expect much when I went there for dinner. But boy!... i'm glad i did. We went there on a tuesday night and they have "all you can eat" ribs. It was worth a trip. Eventhough i only ask for a small rack more. The portion was huge! You'll pretty much spend $20 for dinner but it can serve 2.

3 Stars: Don't go for the BBQ sauce (by sparklesarah)

The portabelo mushroom sandwich is excellent, as are the french fries. Unfortunately the "famous" barbeque sauce leaves a lot to be desired.
4 Stars: A Nice Treat (by svantico)

I've now been to three locations of Wood Ranch. This is the newest and it's very clean and friendly. It borders The Grove shopping area and it's nice to get away from the hustle and bustle.

I ordered the BBQ tri-tip salad and it was outstanding! The meat was cooked to perfection and there was a LOT of it.

Wood Ranch offers a lunch menu which means they knock off a couple of bucks from the regular menu. Portion sizes aren't affected; I barely made it through half of my salad! I was in a pretty large group and we got good service and everyone seemed pleased with their meal.

There's a nice patio for warm season outdoor dining too.

On Saturday Evening 11/01/03 my wife and i went to the Wood Ranch at "The Grove" in Los Angeles to have dinner for our 1 year wedding anniversary and our server "Greg" was just awsome!!!! we mentioned that it was our anniversary and throughout our dinner he was always assuring that we had what we needed and our drinks were never empty. and at the end he surprised us with an ice cream sunday and congratulated us. i think that shows he is paying attention to what guests are requesting and, we would definitley return to have dinner.

4 Stars: OK, But Not REAL BBQ (by bk2ca)

Will do in a pinch, but certainly not nearly as good as the bar-be-que in the South. I still can't understand why they serve tri-tip instead of brisquet. There is no comparison. Sauce is way too sweet for my taste.

3 Stars: You must be joking... (by kimber413)

Having grown up in the South, I have to find it laughable that Wood Ranch made it onto the "Best BBQ" listing here in L.A. And by the way, where is Memphis in this survey? Anyone who knows BBQ knows that it was born there. The Rendezvous, Corky's, John Will's... Countless numbers of fabulous BBQ joints.

If you want something grilled with sauce slapped on it, try Wood Ranch. If you want real BBQ, try somewhere else. I would recommend St. Francis BBQ in Camarillo, CA for L.A. area.

4 Stars: Best tri-tip in L.A. (by ucla)

The best items to order at this grillery (this is not a BBQ) is the tri-tip, the peanut coleslaw (best slaw in L.A.) and the ear-of-corn. Don't forget the lemonade. Stay away from the sauce, ketchup tastes better.

5 Stars: Great Service! (by duckie)

The food is actually really good, but the service is what impressed us the most. We were running late for a movie and told them that we were in a hurry. They had a very large party that they were serving so our food came a little late. They appologized all over the place, and the manager, Rick, came to our table and offered us free deserts as a make-good! WOW. He even offered to have them waiting for us AFTER the movie! I'll go back just for that kind of service. That's what it's all about!

5 Stars: Ignore the editorial review (by Galen)

The reviewer has either no taste buds or a non-gastronomic need to sneer at anything "middle-class." I've tried bbq just about everywhere in southern Cal., and the Agoura Hills Wood Ranch is my favorite. I'm 10 minutes from Hogly Wogly's but don't bother with it. If you like sweet bbq, this is the best--so good that at least two other local places have copied it (not quite as well). Lots on the plate too. I've had everything bbq'ed except the sausage, and it was all delicious; chicken a little dry, but then it is most places. The beef ribs were my favorite. The crowd is right.

5 Stars: Believe the Hype! (by crujones26)

I heard a lot of people talk about Wood Ranch, so I finally decided to check it out for myself. In a word, fantastic! The hot garlic rolls that they keep bringing to the table melt in your mouth. I had the house specialty, Tri-Tip, and it had incredible flavor. Wood Ranch has one of the best BBQ sauces that I have ever tasted. The service was pretty good (I went on a busy night), the menu is reasonably priced, and they have a nice selection of BBQ and grill entrees. A must for any meat or BBQ fan!

I had the Tri-tip, and the meat was exceptionally good. They use Angus Beef, and it was so juicy I needed a sponge to clean off my plate!
