Let me start by saying that I LOVE my American Bulldog, Carlie, that I purchased from this place. She is beautiful, hilarious and such a sweet girl!

However, this place is EXTREMELY deceiving!

First of all, they guarantee you all sorts of wonderful things that are "included with the price of dogs" such as health warranties. What they fail to mention is that you only get these things if you bring your dog to their approved vet within THREE days of purchase. Luckily, my boyfriend was actually reading the paperwork as the sales person was going over it because she completely skipped over that detail!

They also drill this idea of a FREE first vet visit into your head which is another lie. Although I loved the staff at Mohackny Animal Hospital in Vista and did not mind paying to ensure the health of my dog, the exam was NOT free. They perform a required fecal test which is $30, plus any other treatment that your dog might need. When I purchased my dog, her nails looked like talons, her ears were dirty and severely scratched due to her long nails, and she smelled like she had never been bathed. (By the way, she was already SIX months old when we purchased her.) These are all routine things that California Pets should have kept up with. My dog ended up getting her nails trimmed for an additional $14, and an ear treatment and cleaning for another $56. So this FREE visit that they promise to everyone, ended up costing us $100.

Another big upset that the Vet told me was that my dog had not yet been vaccinated for Rabies. We specifically asked them at California Pets if she had already been vaccinated for Rabies and their response was that ALL of their dogs get vaccinated for Rabies before they are sold!

Overall, I was extremely dissatisfied with the quality of California Pets. Although it may seem like a nice store with friendly staff, they are all simply full of SH*T!

I would not recommend them. We have a 10 month old German Shepherd we bought last Summer. I thought with a warranty against hereditary issues and a price tag comparable to a healthy pure breed dog I could buy with confidence that she was going to be mentally and PHYSICALLY sound. She was just diagnosed with Hip Dysplasia and I'm livid. I love our GSD so much and am fearful of the pain and suffering she is going to have to endure down the road. I first tip off was the botched dew claw removal by the breeder. Now this. And while at the vet for our dogs dysplasia I heard other horror stories from about them from the vets. I'm not one to tell others where to get their dogs. I don't think buying pure breed dogs while shelter animals are waiting for homes is a bad thing. Everyone has a right to buy what they want. What I detest is selling irresponsibly breed animals to unsuspecting owners when I could of rescued a shepherd locally if I wanted to run the risk (with 3 children in our house under 6 I couldn't risk a dog with "behavior issues).

If you love puppies, kittens DO NOT BUY from this store. They support the most INHUMANE LICENSED BREEDERS aka PUPPY MILLS. Please be kind and thoughtful and do NOT PAY FOR CRUELTY!!!!!

I have to say if you asked more questions you would have got answers.. the dogs in the back are shelter, injured, quarintened animals because i know that California pets do more than sell animals. They also hold dogs that can not get to a shelter due to overcrowding or illness issues. Animals that have surgery or in need of of attention away from the healthy for sale puppies so of course they would be in the back in crates alone barking and feeling ill CAUSE THEY ARE. I believe California pets obel the laws and do nothing but care for animals and I will continue to associate adn also purchase many pets from there as long as my family wants animals.. Good Job guys.

My family and I have bought two amazing puppies from California Pets. We bought a Laborador Retriever, Marley, at five months old back in December 2008; her only health problems have ever been ear infections, but that isn't due to the fault of the pet store. We bought a three dollar bottle of drops from the vet and give them to her once a month and VOILA, she's healed. We decided Marley was getting lonely so after trying a few shelters unsuccessfully, we stopped by Cal Pets to take a look. I fell in love with the most beautiful Siberian Husky (Olivia); she was two months old at the time. I won't say she wasn't pricey because she was, but she was a perfect fit to our family. Both dogs get along wonderfully and she's never had a single health issue (except that she likes to run into things and get into stuff she shouldn't be eating!)
Olivia and Marley are two of our most valuable purchases and family members. When we adopted a different shelter dog last November, they accepted her in as part of the family too. I love California Pets; I'd recommend anyone there!

I bought a Lab mix here, he got sick 3 days after we bought him. We only got a percentage back from what we spent in the vet which was A LOT! I called them to let them know what was going on, and get this, they said, " We never guaranteed teh dogs will be in perfect health!" omg!!!

California Pets has a great selection of dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and birds. We have purchased two dogs there. Both of them have been great pets and great additions to our family. We often stop by to see what new pets they have. We recommend them to friends all the time.

We have purchased two dogs from California Pets. Both of them have given us nothing but happiness! Both dogs have been healthy and active. We will visit California Pets the next time we are looking for a family pet.

I have 3 beautiful Shih Tzu??s from California Pets, Shivers, 8, Sparky, 6 and Zo, 4. I also have other family members that have a Shih Tzu purchased from California Pets. We had tried in the past to adopt from shelters, but because of our circumstances it was hard to find a good match for our family. We ended up having to return one dog because it continually jumped the fence and ran away and another we could never potty train also a third that wasn??t good with kids. We just didn??t want to go through that heartbreak again. I don??t want to sound anti-shelter, but it just didn??t work out for us. We were really lucky to find the perfect puppy for us at California Pets. I am 100% positive they do not buy their puppies from puppy mills. They are always really open about their policies and will answer any questions?they are not secretive or evasive!! They offer really good health guarantees, although my 3 have only been to the vet for vaccinations so no guarantee was needed...they are perfect! I think it is easy to assume all pet stores get their puppies from mills because of all the stories about them on the news, but I know they don??t. It is too bad they get lumped into that category. I think anyone who has actually bought puppies there knows what a good place it is. I am blessed to have 3 beautiful, healthy family members because of California Pets! I will continue to buy from them and recommend them to anyone looking for a puppy to add to their family!
