I have been working at Windward for 6 months and I have been incredibly impressed by what this school offers its students. The academic programs are definitely exciting, but what has really surprised me is the community. From what little interaction I have with the students, it's easy to see that they all love being here. I chaperoned the senior trip last year and saw what a cohesive group that class had become. I work with many alumni and hearing them talk about their time at Windward, the connections they made with their classmates and teachers, and how well prepared the felt when they got to college is moving.

Windward is a terrific place to work. One thing that makes it so good is the support faculty and programs get from the administration. We get a lot of support to help us advance in our fields of study, and we get a lot of support with whatever we need in the classroom to do our jobs well. In addition, resources are distributed very equitably across all of our programs; no program suffers at the expense of another. Academics, arts, and aethletics are all supported and championed equitably. And this plays out in the way students at Windward feel very free to choose their own passions and paths, exploring the full versatility of their talents across a variety of activities and pursuits, without feeling like they have to choose between one thing or another for fear of being judged negatively for it. The students benefit greatly from the open, collaborative, and respectful attitude the administration and staff promote and imbue.

Windward is an amazing school. Our family has been involved with Windward for over 10 years and the school as grown leaps and bounds. I am especially pleased with how the general make up of the student population has grown and changed. 10 years ago the diversity of the students was minimal. Today you can walk on campus and see a wider variety of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.

My daughters wore a uniform at their elementary school and I was worried about "free dress". They aren't into designer labels... they like to wear jeans or sweats to school. I have to say that most of the kids dress that way plus you aren't looked down upon if you don't have the latest designer hand bag hanging from your shoulder.

Athletics is a huge part of our family and Windward has a fantastic athletic program. Their teams are very competitive and getting stronger and better every year. The only downfall is that they still have 8 man football and no track. I also wish they they had a Booster Club for the parents and maybe a Spirit Club for the students.

If you are looking for a school that has very good academics, great athletic and art programs and still lets your child have a life outside of school than this is the perfect school for your family.

It is difficult to find a school on the West Side that integrates children of the entertainment field into the fold with a minimum of fuss, but these young people are valued no more--and no less--than every other individual on campus.
While there is emphasis on college prep, the school does a nice job of encouraging students to find other passions. There's been a huge leap forward in athletics--several city and state championships in the last few years. The arts and sciences have stunning new dedicated facilities as of 2009.
Seek out a current family and discuss your aspirations. The Windward parents I've met seem balanced and open about their experiences--refreshingly free of parent anxiety.

Windward is a wonderful school! I appreciate the strong academic program and the way in which each student is encouraged to find his/her strengths and talents. Kids are not stamped out of cookie cutters here - instead there is diversity in every respect - brilliant students, gifted artists, talented athletes, journalists, community activists, techies, peer counselors - for a small school, there are many opportunities to excel and more importantly, there is constant support from teachers and admin to help students be comfortable in their skin. I have appreciated Windward because it has provided both academic excellence and nurturance.

A good school that turns out nice young adults. Many very wealthy families, but less snobby than certain other schools In L.A. It's not Harvard-Westlake, but for the average to above average student, it is a good place to get started. If your kid is very highly gifted academically, there might be better places. There have been a few students with drug issues in last several years, but do not know how prevalent it is now. Like all L.A. private schools, it is more difficult to get in if you are not a celebrity or wealthy, but they do have to allow some middle class kids, other wise they would be accused of elitism. However, if you are lucky enough to get in, your kid would get a first class education.

After several years teaching in public schools, community programs, and at the university level, I admit I had some concerns about moving into private secondary education. Now in my 8th year as a faculty member at Windward I can say without question I am experiencing some of the most fulfilling years in my teaching career and seeing the same fulfillment in my students. Each year I??ve seen the school grow in its commitment to its core values, while working diligently to expand its understanding of the changing global world so that it can best provide the intellectual, social, and ethical support for its students. Windward??s commitment to diversity in particular is tireless. The school is consistently growing in number to reflect the larger community (Los Angeles) in terms of socioeconomics, religion, sexuality, and more. But what I find most appealing about Windward??s view on diversity and what is evident in student interactions and student/faculty relationships is that it is one based in inclusion. The environment that is always being honed is one where everyone feels a part of the community.

Windward students enjoy a strong academic program, great working relationships with faculty, and the freedom to pursue multiple interests. Participation in sports, the arts, clubs, and school events is widespread and enthusiastic. It has a wonderfully inclusive and fun-loving atmosphere!

By the end of this school year, our family will have been at Windward School for 14 years. Our experience has been great. Our three children who have gone on to college were academically well prepared by Windward. The school's strongest attribute is it's faculty. They are well educated, gifted teachers who are also supportive and caring towards their students. The school is not so large that kids get "lost", but large enough to offer many varied activities for learning, sports, and the arts.

Our family has been part of the Windward community for the last 10 years. It has been an excellent match for my two very different sons and a most welcoming and supportive group of parents, faculty and staff. It is an institution that strives for, and maintains the leading edge of academic excellence which is balanced by strong arts and athletic departments. My older son transitioned easily into college three years ago and plays soccer for his school team. My younger son, still at Windward, hopes to pursue his interest in both business and art, and loves being a part of the varsity football team. It has been an experience which we have felt privileged to be a part of.

Windward School is located in West Los Angeles across the street from the Mar Vista Park, close to the freeway on a nine-acre spread. A man-made river runs through the entire length of the school grounds and divides the tree-lined campus. The Leichtman-Levine Bridge takes you to the heart of the campus - a group of modern classroom buildings that reminded me of the MOCA complex downtown with its sleek roof lines, pathways and striking colorful umbrellas dotted outside the school restaurant. While I was visiting the school, I followed along with a group of students who were being given a tour of the school by a very enthusiastic member of staff. As he passed by the school store (which looked like a mini-Gap), he told the students, All you just have to do is sign your name for things you want because your parents automatically get an account here when you join the school. That brough smiles to their faces, but be warned, your little darlings could be adding to your already high tuition costs!
