Val's Burgers is a great homey environment and everything I have ordered there has been very good, hot and filling! My family and I love going there for a good wholesome burger as well as other items on the menu. I would high recommend Val's for any family to enjoy a meal together. The servers are just wonderful!

I'm so surprised to read any good reviews on Val's Burgers! I had a Mama burger and paid extra for a slice of tomato and it was a poor excuse for a burger. In-N-Out burgers are way better, cheaper and include a slice of tomato for free. DH ordered the linguica and eggs breakfast and it was awful. He didn't even finish it and he usually finishes all his meals!

It's cash only here and I'm warning you now to stay away from their bathrooms. We're never coming back here again.

I have only been to this place once but i'd have to say it was pretty darn good. The burgers were not greasy like most fast foods. Everything was fresh the tomatoes, onions, pickels etc. You added the tomatoes, etc. yourself so that was cool that you had a choice. The onion rings were really good too. The place was very vintage so that was very nice to see that some places still stand. Overall great place. Kinda small tho.

PROS: great food
CONS: small place

Vals has been providing quality and delicious burgers for decades. Throughout their operation, they've been owned by the same family -- being passed down from father, to his son who now operates it. You'll know him when you walk in, because he's the guy with the handlebar mustache that's usually working behind the register.

The burgers here are awesome. You have your choice of 3 sizes -- the normal sized baby, the large sized mama, and the humongous papa burger. Cheese, bacon and tomatoes cost extra. But each table has ketchup, mustard, mayo, pickles, and onions to dress your burger with, and lettuce is included with your burger.

To accompany your burger, get a basket of fries. One basket will easily feed 2-4 people. These are thick, steak-cut fries. If you like your fries with a lot of potato in the center, you'll probably like these.

And you absolutely can't pass on one of their milk shakes. These are by far the best milkshakes I've havd anywhere. They are thick, creamy, and rich in flavor. Plus, you get the tin, which works out to being equivalent to 2.5 to 3 milkshakes in one tin. But trust me, you won't want to share.

If you don't like burgers, the restaurant serves up a number of other dishes -- mostly diner fare -- at good prices. The waitresses are very friendly, and most have been there for quite a while. Familiar faces are one of the nice things about Vals. The walls are decorated with pictures, articles, plaques, trophies, and such that tell a marvelous history about the place. It won't be hard to spot endorsements gracing the wall, from celebrities who have dined here in the past.

Keep in mind that parking is very tight. There's a small parking lot behind the restaurant, but during peak times it will get full fast. The restaurant is also closed on Sundays, and doesn't serve breakfast.

PROS: Best burgers and shakes. Family owned. Familiar, friendly faces
CONS: Tight parking. Closed Sundays

Val's has been around for many years and has withstood the test of time. The menu has remained the same and the burgers, shakes and fries continue to be the best. Parking is limited and there is usually a line so it's good to get there early. It's anold-fashioned burger joint that the whole family will enjoy.

I had a Mama burger, medium, and was surprised that Val's charges extra for a slice of tomato, but whatever. DH ordered the linguica and eggs breakfast.

The burger was "okay" but the linguica was awful...DH didn't even finish it and he is not one to waste food. Service was "okay" and the owner Val seemed cheerful as he took our cash (no credit cards accepted) but their bathrooms horrified me...and I'll stop right there.

Honestly, an In-N-Out burger is better than Val's...and at least their bathrooms are clean, a slice of tomato is included and they do take credit cards.

No where could you find a better place for a good hamburger. Big ones too. Onion rings are so,so good! Try it, this is the spot. Lunch time has the line out the door 12-1. Parking lot small . Very cool people work here and the service is down to earth. Try it! I give this place A+

i love this place. best time to go is around 3 pm. the lunch rush is over and it's before the dinner rush. by far the best place to get a burger and i've tried many places. not just for a burger, but definitely try the steak sandwich, add some american cheese and tomato and forget claim jumper steaks!!!! shakes are excellent and pie a la mode is great. but if this is your first time, make sure you order the mama burger and guys, don't try the papa burger....it'll ruin it!!! if you think you can eat the papa, you're better off getting a mama burger and splitting the jr steak sandwich with a friend.
excellent food!!! and gotta love the owner's mustache

I have been going to Val's for 26 years now and I do understand the well deserved raves that they get. I have yet to eat a whole mama burger; so you do get your moneys worth. I order my burger medium rare which helps when you reheat it the next day. If you ask for the fries to be crispy they will make them that way. I have never had a greasy burger or rude service. It is however not like me to eat in choosing to go home with my meal because it is generally so crowded. Call in your order and they will have it read. just remember they are closed on Suns. and Mons. In n Out burgers doesn't have anything on Val's they are two totally different venues. so go judge for yourself! Ciao'

Cons: usually extremely busy

My family and I have been eating at Val's for years. Best burgers bar none! Old time authentic diner decor can't be beat. Too bad the service has me wondering if I'll spend another dollar there again. I took a business associate from out of town to Val's for lunch today. As usual, the food was great, unfortunately the service was insulting and rude. Before we were even through with our food the waitress was giving us the bum's rush! Not like we were nursing a cup of coffee for an hour, we had ordered the works, burgers, salad, shakes, fries. This rude bi$%& started pressing us to finish and started clearing out our unfinished food before we could even get it down our throats! Even after I made a remark to her regarding her attitude and the fact that we weren't done, she just started mumbling and shaking her head as she walked away. Think I'll let my wallet do the talking next time I decide where to eat!

I REALLY don't understand the rave reviews of this place. I tried really hard to like it, returned a total of 6 times over a year (yes, I'm stubborn), and nope, nasty across the board. This is a greasy experience, both the restaurant and food. I love my burgers, but this is not the place to go. Sub-par ? (often cold) tasteless patties slapped on small wonderbread buns, an oily mountain of (often cold) grilled onions on the side (extra $); limp, (often cold) fries....how sad when even the shakes don't taste good. In-N-Out is better than this place, for a fraction of the price.

Breakfast fares no better. Unappetizing and greasy. Nuff said.

Val's is more than just a good burger, it's an experience. I've been going for 30+ years and still stop in a couple of times each year since I've moved to the North Bay. Old style diner. We actually drove out a couple times (about an hour drive) while my wife was pregnant because she craved their pickle slices! Burgers are the best you'll find anywhere and cooked exactly as ordered. Fries and onion rings are great. Everyone raves about the shakes, but if they were served anywhere else they would be considered average. This being said, they do go great with the burger...and yes I do the Papa medium well w/cheese and tomato. Some folks complain about the wait, but it's worth it. Some complain about the noise or service...get over it. It's a diner and operates just as a diner should: Sit em, stuff em and get em out. Food is fantastic, portions are generous & well priced and I've yet to have bad service in probably 100+ visits.

I thought, "Yeah, everyone thinks they grew up with the world's greatest burgers and shakes," so I went in with a chip on my shoulder. Was I ever wrong. Go there and worship their burgers and shakes and enjoy a step back to home-town American ambiance from a simpler time.
These are really the best burgers and shakes in the Bay Area. Nation's is great, but in a different league.

I've been coming here for burgers since I was five years old, when I used to order the baby burger (1/3 pound), I've sinced moved on the the momma burger 2/3 pounds the recipe hasn't changed a bit. Big, juicy handmade bugers cooked to order with huge baskets of steak fries and some of the best shakes and malts in town. As a matter of fact I think most of the staff has been around since my first visit 20 some years ago as well. Can get busy, but the turnaround is quick and the food is worth the wait if you're in the mood for an all-american burger.

I've relocated from the California Bay Area to Houston, Texas and the meal I miss the most (and both Houston and the S.F. Bay Area has unquestionably great food) is Val's burgers! Made to order--Quality prime beef, ground specially to assure the quality and the steak cut french fries make Val's burger meal better than any other anywhere. Well-done or rare, from the baby burger(1/4 pound) to the papa burger(1 pound), you can top them with your preference: raw or smothered onions, sweet or dill pickle, several type of cheese choices and more. You can travel across the nation looking for a better burger, and, I have, and you will not find a better burger and fries, anywhere. We used to live in Hayward and had visitors from all over the U.S. and they agreed. Val's is the best!

Vals.If you live in the East Bay and do not know this name ,I feel sorry for you. This is THE best burger and shake joint. It's the real deal 50's diner. Not some "made to look like a diner" place. Here are some tips for the newbies so you will look like a Vals Pro.Order your shake as an "all around" , i.e. "i'll have an all around chocolate shake" .It's on the menu so you can read up on it.Also, the vegetable soup is awesome, and so is the clam chowder on Fridays.Order a side of sauteed onions for your burger too. Get there before 5 to beat the crowd or if there are only two of you there is always the counter. What are you wating for ?

If you want a burger that would shame In-N-Out or a steak that makes you forget Outback, Val's is the place to go. It's a little tiny hole-in-the-wall type of place that has a vintage diner feel and seriously delicious homestyle cooking for a very reasonable pricetag. We have never been there and not LOVED everything that we ordered. From super-thick shakes served the old-fashioned way, to tasty chili and the ridiculously big Papa Burger, it's all fantastic!

This burger is an "event." It's also not for the feint of heart or a calorie pincher.

But for a special occasion - or when ya just gotta have a burger.......why settle? Go for a Val's Buger!

My favorite is the Momma burger, but if you can handle the Pappa, you're a better man (with a bigger stomach) than me, Gunga Dinn.

Pros: Great Food, Awesome Burgers, Incredible Shakes

.

Great Burgers. Order one of their terrific Milk Shakes and you get the metal container holding the excess, that it was made in. Parking is atrocious. You're going to have to wait outside or jammed inside, standing. Is the food worth the inconvenience? Yes. Don't go here for the ambiance. You're sitting elbow to elbow with the other dinners.

Val's has the best burgers in the Bay Area! You get great value and good taste. Frequently, it's a long wait, but once seated, you get fast service. The burgers are always good and they have the best milkshakes, too.

This is the best burger joint ever! The burgers are cooked the way you want them and all the condiments (onions, pickles, etc) are on each table. The shakes are fountain style and the basket of fries are unbeliveable.
Breakfast is really a treat here, also! A real diner with great food!

This place has been in business since the 30's and is packed all the time!

Val's is a tradition in our family. I have been going there since I was a kid. Parking is HORRIBLE! Great burgers, great "Greasy spoon" atmosphere. Family Owned and operated. Family lives in back of restuarant.

I have been going to Val's since moving here 5 years ago and they have the best burgers around! The service is great, a bunch of women who have worked their for years and know their regulars well. My only "beef" is that they are not open on Sunday and Monday. I guess everyone deserves a day off!

I'm a huge burger fan! I've been to most of the burger places in the bay, and Val's is by far the best. A little costly, but I guess "you get what you pay for."

In n Out can not begin to compare with VAL's. Quality, quantity, and a comfortable place to sit and enjoy a meal. A favorite in town for over 40 years, my mother took me there as a kid, and my son and I continue the tradition.

Momma burgers. Best in the area. Condiments on tables, pickles, tomatoes, relish, onions. Pile it all high and enjoy. Excellent beef stew also. IT'S ALL GOOD AT VAL'S.

While I agree In & Out Burgers are great, I like to give my business to "family run" businesses such as Vals. I have always received great service and wonderful food.

Pros: Family Owned, Great Value, Portion Sizes

Cons: Need more locations, old building

This is "NO" fast food place, it's a place where you sit down and revisit how burgers used to be made BEFORE fast food processing. Optional cheddar cheese is also a must!!! If you really want a burger that rivals your best outdoor barbeque try Val's!!! I also recommend their shakes, and yes, they use REAL ice cream!!!

This is a great place for burgers cooked to your order, all the fixins' are on the table and you can add as much as you wish. The milkshakes are killer, real ice cream and they bring the mixing can to your table. Fries are OK, not fresh but they don't skimp on size of the order, a basket will serve two persons easily.
Limited parking and limited seating but they do take out.

There is nothing better than kicking back after a long day's work and sipping one Val's famous milkshakes, then wolfing down the best burger and onions rings you'll ever eat. There's more than burgers on the menu too, but I'll have none of it! Sunset magazine had an article about the place a few years back and it proudly hangs on a wall in the front of the restaurant. This is one of my favorite restaurants in all of the Bay Area. A definite must for anyone traveling to this neck of the woods!

Best tasting buger in bay area. Not fancy burgers like barneys, but quality of meat is better. Have baby (1/3#). mama (1/2#) & papa (1 full#). BUn or french rool. Best milk shakes on the west coast! Only downer is french fries, but they are OK, but Barneys are better. Ask for sue when you go. She's a pistol! No credit cards.
