I wanted to sell some coins and some silver bullion that I had bought in the mid-80s.\n\nI was somewhat confused by the previous reviews, which were quite polarized; reviewers seemed to have had either excellent or terrible experiences there. I checked the Yellow Pages, and saw that the shop was the only one in the greater Sacramento area displaying both ANA and PCGS certifications in their ad. I decided to check it out. If it had a good vibe, then great. If not, I was willing to drive to shops in the San Francisco Bay area. I'm glad I stopped in; my experience was Excellent!\n\nI was greeted by the lady of the couple who own shop, who was professional and courteous. When I explained why I was there, she called the man, Dave out from the back.\n\nDoing business with Dave was just super. He was very knowledgeable and I enjoyed talking with him. We discussed my coins, and he showed me how he arrived at an offer price. He double-checked the closing price for silver and raised his offer on my bullion as a result.\n\nAlthough I am by no means a coin trader, I do have experience in some other types of investments, some of it quite substantial. I did research on coins for about a week before I went into Excelsior. I'm totally convinced that I was treated professionally and received a fair offer (which I accepted)!\n\nAnd, as you see, I am happy to recommend the shop to you and to everyone else!

Pros: Very Knowledgeable, Professional, Courteous, and Fair

I have lived in Sacramento my entire life and have NEVER experienced such a poor display of common courtesy, let alone customer service, as I did from the man and wife owners of this store. Absolutely Awful. I should have known something was wrong with the attitude of the wife on the phone.\r\nTurned around and walked out with my current and ALL FUTURE business. I just cannot stomach giving my business to any merchant acting like they are doing ME a favor by allowing me to give them my patronage. How they have stayed in business this long is likely a result of them being the ONLY store of its kind in the area. That kind of arrogance has a way of coming up and biting.

Pros: never got that far

Cons: worst customer service

I have traded hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of precious metal bullion and coins from all the major on line players (Kitco, Fidelitrade, Monex UGH!, Tulving, APMEX, etc.) and Dave at Excelsior beats them all. His premiums are lower, his service is far better then any of the other guys, and he has been in the same location for many years so you know he won't run off with your stuff. Of course he is smaller then some of the really big companies listed above, but he gets the job done for less then they charge, and you don't have to mess with shipping.\r\n\r\nIn addition, Dave will walk you through the process of buying and selling coins and bullion which takes a huge amount of stress out of the deal, especially for first time traders.\r\n\r\nI can't say enough good things about Excelsior, they are the best.

Pros: Best deal anywhere that I have found, honest, reliable and stable

Cons: A little smaller then some of the online dealers so he doesn't have as much in stock.

The store is small and the safety features are very good but not intrusive. The store workers and owners are friendly, but very detailed oriented. I have figured out (often after the fact) that they have treated me more than fairly even though I am a complete novice. They have often given me advice but in a non-judgmental way. They were not put off or frustrated when I asked repeated questions trying to learn or understand, or when I did not take their advice. They are not pushy in any way and I have never felt that I was getting a hard sell routine. They asked questions to find out what I was trying to do (i.e. gifts, hobby, investments) and they have facilitated my purchases several times. I have no problem recommending them to my best friends.

I keep coming back because they offer fair prices of both the purchase and sale of coins, and, yes he is knowledgeble about the valuation of coins. They should, however, take some classes in customer service. SERVICE WITH A SMILE should be their new mantra. Who knows, they may attract more customers by word of mouth. However, I wonder if its too late to teach these old dogs new tricks. I wonder if they even read these reviews.

Pros: Best value in town albeit the only value in town

Cons: Lacking ""people"" skills

People are entitled to their opinions, but after visiting Excelsior Coin Gallery, something of a local landmark on Arden, which was established in 1984 - information I was provided by the friendly and knowledgeable owner - I was left with nothing but a positive impression. An owner run business is too rare these days, in our world of Wal-Mart visioned stores, and I was pleased to wait in line and watch the varied clintele spend some time with the co-owners, whom they addressed directly, sensitively, accurately and with good information. It was clear that they both had repore with the customers, with the husband of the couple admittedly having more in the way of sparkle, for my particular way of seeing things. Perhaps women would see the couple differently. Indeed, I found myself commenting to the owner, quite without resistance, that he seemed a ""nice"" person, a comment I offered in response to hearing that he had been stolen from via a fake cashier's check. It was something like, ""how can someone think to do that to such a nice person; now if you were a swindling hood..."" So, you can see that the environment was healthy and positive, and I felt as though I was spending time with a business I would like to frequent for many years to come. I hope this older couple endeavors in their line of work for many more years.

I would like to comment because of the last comment to verify that I had the same experience with the grumpy old lady. I called the shop a couple of times and got the same response, a cold unknowlegable grumpy woman that seemed to be put out by any inquiries. \r\nThere is another seller in this area a man I spoke to while doing a search in the same area, very friendly, knowlegable, and seemed to go out of his way to help you, but through internet search I lost him before I was able to see him. With gold and silver prices going up until who knows when, I would not recommend this store unless you know exactly what you want, and spot prices which they may..or may not have..but wouldn't be able to tell you..ha ha

Dave and Connie are some of the finest people I have had the pleasure to meet in my lifetime. Both are extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Some of the greatest deals I have ever made were with these folks. Always happy to spend time with their customers, Dave and Connie provide a warm and comfortable atmosphere for fellow Numismatists to employ their trade. Highest recommendation to all.\r\n\r\nChad Thompson\r\nANA LM

Pros: So knowledgeable about Numismatics. Treats the new collector with same care as a veteran.

Cons: Not open 24 hours a day and they do take weekends and holidays off not to mention that pesky summer vacation

.

I would highly recommend excelsior coin gallery. They are extremely helpful and informative. They are very fair and easy to deal with. I would recommend them to anyone.

I collect U.S. Mint Silver Proof Coin Sets (MSPCS) and had ordered from an online dealer one of the previous year's MSPCS; I noticed that the dime had a ""copper"" looking blemish which lead me to research available services for coin valuation/authentication. I found Excelsior Coin. Unfortunately, my first and only visit was met by a grumpy, uninformed, unfriendly, and opinionated woman (whom appeared to be the wife/co-owner of the business). I asked her if a coin blemish such as described above would affect the value of the coin. She looked at me and said ""What do you mean?"". I explained that I had bought the MSPCS and the dime arrived with copper spots. She looked at me like I was from another world and flat out said ,""No."" (The U.S. Mint website itself had a link describing how the look of a coin, including any blemishes, WILL AFFECT its value). I further explained that the coin was only 2 years old and I couldn't see how a 2 year old, uncirculated coin could ""naturally"" blemish AND not be devalued. She replied that, it just happens and that, no, why would it affect the value; it's sealed and there's no reason to think the value would be affected. (BTW, the cases can be opened and reclosed). I remained courteous, perhaps too courteous, and even showed her the coin set I had brought with me. I then asked if the dealership offered numismatic services to which she asked ""What are you talking about?"". I explained the advice of U.S Mint. She then said, ""Why would you want that?"". I replied that I was looking to have my coins evaluated for value and authenticity. She glared at me from above her spectacles resting on the tip of her nose and replied ""That costs money"". Please :). I was pretty much done at this point, actually I was done beforehand but, like most good citizens, I give people the benefit of the doubt. Even grumpy old people, and she was very grumply, cold, had poor knowledge and terrible customer service. My advice: Go only if you are very desperate.

Pros: Not a lot of local coin dealer competition so this is an option if desperate

Cons: Poor Customer Service, Not Helpful
