A couple of okay dishes, but overall, poor food

by realblandpoet

Went here based on the reviews I read, and the fact they have miang kum. Fortunately, that was good! And, the thai crepe was interesting. Everything else was not so great. The thai iced tea was too sweet and watered down. the pad thai was nothing special. the tom kha gai was ok - the soup itself had a nice flavor, but the chicken was overcooked. Not enough flavor in the basil chicken - plus my brother thinks the bell peppers in the dish were starting to turn... Too many pumpkins in the pumpkin chicken curry, and the flavor wasn't that great anyway.

The only saving grace was we were the only people in the place on a Saturday night, and they had funny karaoke videos on! That, and the service was very good. Also, it did help that Bi Rite creamery was a few blocks away - always a good way to end the night and make any meal better!

If you want thai in the mission - go to Suriya thai - they have a lot of dishes you can't find in different places, and some really nice food.

Pros: service

Cons: food

Delicious gai tom ka

by alisat

The first time I went here was several years ago and I have been going back ever since. The prices are very reasonable and the service is extremely friendly and very attentive. I am Thai and the food here has never disappointed me. Dishes such as the Gai Tom Ka are full of flavor and you can ask them to make it a little more sour, sweet, or etc. depending on your tastes. I also really enjoy the fried rice dishes and Meang Kom which is always fun to eat and surprising not very easy to find at other Thai restaurants in the city. The menu is long but if you need help, the owner is always ready to lend a hand.

Pros: tasty dishes, great service

Cons: closed mon and tues

Its ok...

by stiguy05

The place was ok. The food wasn't really all that great, the Chicken with Basil was the worst I've ever had, all you can taste was the basil and oil, the flavor of the chicken was well... oily and taste like basil, I couldn't even taste the chicken. The beef and meat ball noodle soup was like out of the package. It seemed like they didn't even take time to make it, the broth was bland, seemed like it sat there all week long. I had to add a lot salt, soy sauce, and even fish sauce to even get some flavor in there. The barbeque was good, mixed vegtables with tofu was good, but the tofu pieces are so small, barely had any tofu in it. HOWEVER, the service was GREAT! But, I don't think I will ever return.

Pros: Great service!

Cons: Bad food... small seating, no elbow room.

best thai food in sf, this place is unbelievable

by tommyjones

wow!! this place is absolutely amazing i have been going to thailand for as long as i can remember and nothing in the city compares to authentic thai as does bangkok16. honestly those who complain dont know real thai food. this place wonderful i have been 8 times already and i will continue to remain a faithful customer for years and years to come... if you need help ordering just ask the owner terry if he is there he will definitely steer you in the right direction (the man knows his food) -for starters i usually get the shrimp wrapped in rice paper, the chicken satay or if your feeling really adventurous i would recommend meang-kom and kari- pop. i also love the gai-tom-ka soup or the tom-yum-goong soup (be careful its a little spicy) and for entrees i love the green chicken curry or the red pumpkin curry with brown rice. the chicken pad thai is great and the pad-siew with brocolli and tofu is even better. and lastly for desert thai pancakes (roti) it is mouth watering, i guarentee you will wake up in the morning dreaming of this...i know i do. it is hard to go wrong at bangkok 16 so give it a try im sure you will all fall in love just as i have...

Pros: service, quality of food, atmosphere, delivery

Cons: parking, crave it way to often!!

In terms of authenticity, the food is bland

by been_to_thailand

I spent three weeks in Thailand and fell in love with authentic Thai food! Since traveling there, Thai food has become my favorite of all cusines. While the food from Bangkok 16 tastes "thai", it lacks the intensity of flavor I fell in love with. The tom yam gai was very bland - neither hot nor sour, and the chicken pieces were unedible (the leftover pieces from other chicken dishes, I presume - cartilage and such). Even in Thailand, they use thinly sliced white breast meat for this soup. This dish should be bursting with flavor, but sadly it tasted watery. I also ordered fresh imperial rolls, which are supposed to be wrapped in rice paper - instead thery were wrapped in a doughy flat bread (like you get at an etheopian place). The pad thai was dry and the noodles tasted pastey. The food rates slightly above average on my scale - I've had much worse Thai food in the city. They have fast, free delivery and overall it tasted fresh - just not very flavorful. There are definitely better Thai places (Marnee Thai, Ploy 2, Kon Toke, Thep Phanom) --- and worse for that matter.

Unquestionably the best Thai food in SF

by bayarealocal

I've been coming to this place for 3 years now. I've never been dissapointed. Everyone of their beef and pork dishes is delicious. Every once and a while I spoil myself and order the Ta-Lay Thai plate. It is a seafood dish but the the spicy chili curry sauce sets it a part. The owner is very friendly and always goes out of his way to make sure that your experience at Bangkok 16 is a great one. Great place to take a date, or have a great meal before a night out in the mission. Its impossible to only eat here once. It's that good. Please increase your delivery zone and I'll be calling you 3-4 times a week!!!

Best Coconut Chicken soup- and free delivery!

by sashi16sc

I loved the coconut chicken soup here- it was fresh, and delicious!
We also ordered the pad thai which was a little dry but still tasty.
On a second try at this restaurant I tried the sweet and sour chicken soup and the chicken was werid rubbery chunks, not so good, but the broth and vegetables made up for it. I also ordered a salad which came with cucumbers, spinach, tofu and POTATO Chips!
weird combo, but drizzled with peanut dressing everything tastes good!

Pros: free delivery

Cons: not consistent

On the bottom list of Thai places

by collettette

From the high rating and reviews I was excited to try this place. I ordered Tom Ka Gai (chicken Cocunut Soup) which I have ordered from many places. It tasted nothing like it. More like watered down chicken broth. The chicken itself was substandard. I had to scoop out the chicken because it was just gross. Our other dish - curry vegetables was just ok. Again very watered down and little flavor.

Pros: Lots of seating

Cons: Food, low quality, no flavor

worst Thai food I've ever tasted

by j10d3b70

Thought that I would try something different than my regular Thai restaurants. Saw a review on citysearch about Bangkok 16 and thought that it would be a good deal. Bad choice. First off do not ever forget to tip the delivery guy or he will give you a nasty comeback. Second, the food was not worth the price. I could have gotten Chinese food for better taste and cheaper price. The food that I ordered was very bland, no flavor, you name it. It tasted like really bad chinese food with coconut milk added. The curry pumpkin was highly recommend. I highly recommend that you avoid it. The lamb curry was tough to chew. Lamb cooked well is usually free of "lamb" smell. I knew right away that this was a bad choice as I could still smell the odor of the lamb. The spicy sour soup was not spicy nor was it sour at all. The hallmarks of Thai flavors were completely missing from the food or the combination just was not balanced. Head for other Thai restaurants as this one is a complete waste of money.

My secret getaway

by jonsf1958

What a great location! And such delicious food. The first time I stopped into Bangkok 16 I was walking from the Mission to see a show at the Castro Theater. Passing Bangkok 16, I checked out the menu in the window. So I popped into the restaurant for a quick meal before the movie. That was the start of a love affair. I've made it my personal challenge to try something new whenever I bring a friend. We're never disappointed.

One dish I can never get enough of is Kanika's Special. It has tender lamb and eggplant. Sometimes they serve something I never see anywhere else: it's a curry served over an Indian Roti-style bread. The setting is intimate enough to serve as a great place to bring a date or a good friend. Conversation is never overpowered by room noise or loud music.

Pros: Convenient to Mission and Castro

Authentic, Variety and great service

by rml244

Found this listing thru citysearch. What a find! I had almost given up finding a decent thai place in my new neighborhood (noe-mission). GRRREAT! We didn't have a menu but the person who I talked to on the phone was very patient and gave very good recommendations, we stuck to the basics (chicken curry, pad thai and shrimp salad) and it was very good. Food delivered hot and under 25 mins. Good portions and the menu has over 100 items, good for vegetarians, spice lovers and low carb dieters. We are pretty picky thai eaters but this food definitely seemed like it had soul in it. Keep up the good work!

Pros: Delivery, authentic, large variety

Cons: None

I always feel at home at Bangkok 16

by goattee

San Francisco has so many Thai restaurants. One is so crowded you can't move your chair. Another is so busy it feels like a train station. There is a reason why Bangkok 16 remains in business for more than 15 years. They make you feel welcome, the food is satisfying, the service is unobtrusive and the menu is diverse. It's always a good sign when I leave a restaurant with a sense of well being. And Bangkok 16 always leaves me wanting more.

Pros: Diverse menu, home cooking, comfortable

If you don't mind tasteless runny curry...

by danidec

then this is the place for you. I ordered green curry with beef and eggplant. I got a container full of some runny green sauce, chicken, eggplant, and lots of flavorless veggies. I wonder if they used coconut milk at all. Not only was my order wrong, the food was awful. It wasn't spicy at all, and the rice was mushy. I'm really sad for those of you that love this place. There are so many better options. The pricce was great...but you get what you pay for.

Not only was the food bad, but the delivery driver refused to deliver to my door. He called me on his cell phone, not using the buzzer at my door. I told him to buzz the door and I would let him in. He refused. He said I had to come out to the street.

Skimpy plates

by pierresas

My girlfriend and I ordered 2 appetizers and a soup, as we often do in Thai, Chinese or Vietnamese restaurants: Imperial rolls (#3), Spinach DIY rolls (#9) and Seafood combination soup (#18). The appetizers were so skimpy we thought that one was the accompaniements for the other! The soup too wasn't that big and just ok for the taste. The service was very kind but it doesn't compensate for the lack of love and generosity in the kitchen. I'm surprised to see the other raving reviews: maybe it's different for the entrees?
