This is crazy because the food here is soooooooooooo great I can't even believe it but the owners are the WORST EVER as hosts/hostesses. Once I asked for more naan and I was told no, the kitchen was closed and I should have asked earlier. I was also told that they don't make too much because it gets wasted. I gave the food ONLY five stars but I don't know what to say about the whole dining experience. If you feel like getting insulted and having a terrible experience while eating the most delicious Indian food ever, go there. The only way you can take it out is you order there which kind of defeats take out. Also one time I was there, the owner (male) was realllllly rude to a staff person & since that time, I have never seen another worker. I seriously doubt anybody in their right mind can work for this guy.

Pros: BEST FOOD

Cons: SERVICE

.

I've been coming to Nirvana for the past ten years for their S. Indian grub. I don't come here for the service, the atmosphere, or the North Indian food. It's all about their South Indian specialties!

Nirvana is a small, restaurant that seats about twenty-five to thirty customers. Multi-colored holiday lights adorn the entrance way and a small TV is suspended from the right corner of the restaurant, blaring Bollywood music videos. The restaurant can easily accommodate parties of six or less, but if you have larger parties, make a reservation!

I generally order their Mysore masala dosa, which is a spicier version of their regular masala dosa. If you aren't familiar with the "dosa," it's an Indian-style crepe typically stuffed with a mixture of potato, onions, and spices. It is served with sambhar, a hearty vegetable lentil and two chutneys, coconut and tamarind. The coconut chutney, sauce, is my favorite!

Another popular menu item is uthappam, an Indian pancake made out of a batter of lentils, rice, and vegetables. Nirvana truly "brings it" when it comes to their South Indian food. As an Eastsider, I'm lucky to have one so close to me! If you're on the Westside, try Woodlands in Artesia!

For a while, Nirvana wouldn't allow you to take-out their dosas, because it required a lot of extra packaging that they didn't want to shell out the money for. This baffled me for quite a few years, but finally... it seems like the owner is (finally) taking his customer's opinions into consideration!

Overall, I'm pretty cautious when I visit this restaurant. You never know what to expect when it comes to service, but the food is delicious! Definitely try the South Indian specialties over the North Indian curries. If you want legitimate Northern cuisine, head over to New Delhi Palace in Pasadena.

Went there this evening. Here the food isn't so much the issue. The issue here is the owner/Waiter(the lone wiater) has a bad attitude and keeps you waiting for a long time. You know it is bad when the customers talk to each other to compare service and how long they've been waiting for for their food. The place was so out of control when I went there because no one was attending to the customers. Something you rarley see. The owner(the old guy) needs to fork out the money for someone to wait the tables. Oh and when I kept two people from walking out because they waited so long to be servered because I told t them the food is good. Instead of thanking me , the owner gave me attitude when I told him to take good care of them. Avoid this place unless you like to be frustrated by bad service, menu items that aren't available and long waits for food. Not to mention long waits for your check. It is amazing this place stays in business. Actually I noticed there were south asians who wanted take out. He gave them an attitude as well. I don't think he is biased against non Indians he is just rude to everyone.

We read all the reviews telling about the husband/wife team and how the food was excellent but the service was the opposite. I can tell you that our experience was that both food and service was excellent. Maybe they read their reviews? For example, there were only two of us, and we were offered a table for four.

The selection of food was wonderful and we had a hard time choosing. We ended up getting a few extra items just because we wanted to try some things. Wow, it was ALL amazing. The meat samosa (got it spicy) - you have to try that!! The potato samosa is also excllent. The crust fresh, flaky and crispy - YUM!

The breads we got were amazing;

All in all, for us, this was an excellent experience and we may even go back one more time while we are in town this weekend! lol

Nirvana is a really small restaurant and is operated by an old couple. The wife cooks in the kitchen while the husband serves the food. It's one of the top rated restaurants by us.. the food is extra ordinarily good. It's the only food that I would say comes close to home in India amongst all the places we've been to so far in LA/NY and we've lived here for a very long time!! ..
I've heard they have catering service too.. and it's popular as well amongst the Indian food patrons. Once we went for dinner and the guy serving us apologized since they couldn't serve the usual sweet dish and had to alternate for something else which comes with the Thali because they were all sold out for a party. A little gesture, but to me it spoke volumes about there concern about the things..
The service is ok.. we never paid attention to nitty gritties.. I would suggest to try the Thalis - Andra or I think Madras/Mysore thali.. and to end with the traditional coffee.

First off, my service here has always been outstanding. Total attention and concern for the enjoyment of myself and guests. Not overly cheerful or outspoken, however, but I only had to make eye contact to get complete attention.

For the Southern California area, if you love South Indian dishes, this place is without peer. A sumptious diverse array of morselly goodness to sample. The only thing that may prevent you from trying them all is that you will no doubt have favorites that you will get a craving for out of nowhere... The Madras coffee is heavenly too. Very reasonably priced as well. Overall decor is not bursting with atmosphere, but it doesn't turn you off either.

This is a south indian restaurant, so stick to the south indian choices and you wont be disappointed. However, don't go here if you feel like you want to be treated right. I have been here 5 - 6 times and every time its something or the other. The first was when the owner threw a fit when I asked for an extra fork. The second was when I asked a question about the menu and the husband scowled at me like I didn't know how to read English.I dont know if these traits are lack of communication skills or if the owner (the old guy) is rude. Could be either, its sometimes hard to say with old people. Last, and this might be the most outrageous stmt in my review, I think the owner is biased to non-Indians.Just my two cents. I swallow my pride every time I have to go there to eat, but from now on I have decided to take my business elsewhere.

A loyal customer for 15 years (from their old claremont area location) I love the chicken korma, and I drive long distances to have it when I need it.

I can certainly understand not taking up space during high traffic hours, but telling me I MUST sit at a tiny table when there's no one else in the restaurant was enough for me to boycott this joint and pass the word to my friends and family. I'd been there before and it wasn't that good, so no great loss for me. The older woman harshly blurted out, "You sit over THERE!" to which I replied, "I'll go sit back in my car and go elsewhere".

Autocratic owner runs restaurant as his own little fifedom. Would not allow us to tip server directly. Our Chai and Lassi were watered down versions of their original selves. Meal was compartmentalized into small portions. The servers were friendly and attentive. Not so the owner and his wife.

From the reviews, I couldn't say more. We dined here at least two times and have not been back for at least 3 years now. The atmosphere was boring, as far as I can remember, so does the owner and the food. The last stop was when I ordered "Chicken Curry" and it was an 85% water to curry mix ratio, the plate was cold and I thought they accidentally spilled iced water on my curry. My best bet is, just avoid going there overall!

Rude! Rude! Rude! That's all I have to say for these folks. They are cheap and don't know how to talk to the customer. We asked for some containers for the leftovers and they didn't want to give us anymore than 2!!!! On top of that the guy goes, you only come here once a year???? Can you believe this??? I wish I could give them a rating of -10.

This little suburban Indian eatery offers an extensive menu of classic dishes in a charming room with linen-clad tables. Begin with samosas or fish pakoras with tamarind chutney, before sharing big pans of chicken tikka masala, lamb…
