Clay Elementary School is an elementary school in the Rolando area of San Diego. Principal Harriet Gilwee really cares about every child at the school, and is actively involved in the day to day activities and happenings at the school. The school is a melting pot of ethnicities and cultures, and instead of allowing that to hinder the education the students receive at this school, they have used the setting and makeup of their school to create students who are multi-cultural thinkers and can live, survive, and thrive in our ever changing world. The school is made up of approximately 500 students, most of which are from single-parent families. Many of these students would be ignored, considered ?high risk?, or considered a challenge at other elementary schools, but at Clay Elementary they are encouraged to come and seek a better education. They bring in kids of multiple ethnicities to the school through the Voluntary Ethnic Enrollment Program which the school participates in. This school also offers a speech therapist on site, which can help students who have special needs or whose first language is not English succeed. Unlike many schools who have pushed out the health care staff, Clay Elementary has a caring school nurse, Mrs. Shirley Webber, as well as a Health Aide, Mrs. Linda Granse. You can rest assured that the entire staff of Clay Elementary is watching over your children, trying to help them succeed, and working towards pushing students beyond their limits to prepare them for middle school in the future. The teachers are nice, helpful, and very professional. They show a general concern about their students, and they stay readily accessible to their students, even outside of traditional school hours. This school has pulled out all of the stops, constantly undergone improvements, and continued to struggle to provide kids with an environment in which to succeed. If you live in the area, I highly encourage you to send your child to Clay Elementary School. They will receive an education the likes of which they you will not receive anywhere else, and it?s multi-cultural atmosphere really prepares your children for middle school, high school, college, and beyond.

PROS: Small student to teacher ratio, involved principal
CONS: None that I can think of
