When I first went to Kirin, I hadn't eaten all day. As soon as i entered, I was overwhelmed by delicious aromas. The very smell made me hungrier. I was immediately greeted by polite and very friendly staff, who quickly found me a table, which was great because the restaurant was quite busy that evening. I looked at the menu, and after several minutes decided to get Sizzling Rice Soup and Spicy Orange Chicken. I couldn't believe how fast they brought me my soup. In only about 5 minutes, a bowl of steaming hot, wonderful smelling soup. I tasted it, and i was completely shocked. It was literally the most delicious dish i had ever had in my life. This record was soon topped by the Spicy Orange Chicken, which was also brought to me at suprising speed. All in all, it is my opinion that Kirin has the best Chinese food in California, and the service is incredible as well. Just as another review said, the staff actually take the time to get to know you. 5 stars, Kirin.

Kirin has great Chinese food right nearby our house. It's always great. Plus it's run by a great family. They use quality ingredients and the food is always freshly prepared. Their lunch specials are very inexpensive. Dinners are reasonable too!

This restaurant is always a pleasant experience. The service is friendly with employees that actually take the time to get to know their customers. There is also the food quality, which is above average. I have never had a dish that I didn't enjoy. With a huge selection and variety, there is something there to please anyones appetite. I reccommend a few items there; the award winning pot-stickers, walnut prawns, peking spareribs, mushroom chicken, crispy garlic chicken, and the Kirin Beef. The kirin beef and walnut prawns will make you swoon. It's that good. While it sometimes tends to be busy, the people are friendly and make the wait worthwhile. It's truly a local gem.

We've eaten at Kirin's twice now. The first time we noticed the slow service but didn't know the cause. This past week we ate there again, and were seated at the back of the second room, where we had a good view of the cashier's counter. Now we know the cause of the slow/poor service. They don't seem to have anyone assigned to processing take-out orders, so when one is ready, one of the waiters must stop serving customers. The counter was constantly full of bags of take-out foot. Next time we'll either join the take-out group or go elsewhere. Since the prices are the same for ordering in or to go, Kirin seems to have no incentive to emphasize service to their eat-in customers.

The food was actually more interesting this time and the quality was well above average. But we had several different waiters and no offer of more water. I'd give them a solid C for service, and a B for food quality.

PROS: Quality is above average and the menu has good variety
CONS: Poor service due to demands of take-out customers

I'm going to bet that there isn't a better Mu Shu even in San Francisco. The veggies are CRISP and Vibrant and served with thin slices of spring onions. A small but significant touch. The hoisin is bottled but a venial sin in the context of the amazing veg. Hot and Sour soup here is magnificent, though why the peas and carrots?? Sichzuan beef is awesome. Now that I've typed all this, I'm wondering, "yeah what's WITH the peas &carrots and the bottled hoisin?" in a restaurant that could otherwise be so great? On the other hand, it's so much better than anything elese in the area, especially for the money that I gotta give it a 9.5

We have been treating ourselves to Kirin every Thursday evening for at least 3 years and have found it to be THE BEST Chinese in town, consistently. Though we have tried most of the items on the menu, their Princess Prawns will make you weep, they are so delicious. Another of our favorites (though not on the menu) are the steak and green peppers. Their sauces coupled with properly cooked veggies make for a wonderful experience. A family owned and operated Santa Rosa must do.

PROS: Consistently delicious
CONS:

Ordered the Hunan beef, $9.50 since the Mongolian beef is not specially marinated. The beef was tender but bland. Vegetables included carrots, broccoli, mushrooms, snow peas, zucchini, green onions, bok choy, and tiny corns. I would ask for them to add onions, celery, and green pepper. Forget their brown sauce which is bland and the black bean which is too salty. The potstickers, $6.95 were tasty but half the size I'm used to. The shrimp with black bean sauce, $10.95 was well portioned with large shrimps, onions, green peppers, and mushrooms. If your taste is towards salty then you would love the sauce. The decor is a grade above and dinner reservations are highly recommended. The food quality seems to be great. The prepartion is lacking. Sauces are either bland or salty. I will return and try further entrees.
8/26/06 Tried the house special dinner, 19.95 per person. The pu-pu platter was great. The shrimp and bbq pork were a standout. The sizzling rice soup was bland, but the water chestnuts were very crispy indicating a freshness to their vegetables. They charge a $1 to substitue. The Sichuan crispy beef was excellent. The meat was so tender and lean it was on par with the finest of restaurants. In Vegas you would pay $16 alone for this quality. The walnut and pineapple prawns were fine. Wish there was more on the plate. The fried rice had too much egg for my taste. Their vanilla ice cream is a very high quality. Overall this meal is by far one of the better values for Chinese in Santa Rosa. I'm bumping them up two notches to a 7.

This eastside gem is a fairly recent ( just a couple years) addition to our favorite places. They rival our longtime favorite-Gary Chu's- as our best chinese restaurant in town. Their dining room is a bit smaller then Gary Chu's but still plenty of room to eat in- but we mostly pick up and take home for family get togethers. Don't miss there sweet and sour chicken, green beans, sizzling rice soup, and spicy beef. All the basics are good too (eggrolls, chow mein, fried rice). You can call ahead for pick up. All the food is good and not too greasy and a couple of their items are unique to them and excellent.

PROS: great food- some unique menu items
CONS: Eastside location not convient from the westside!
