I love the dishes in here, oozing with fantastic flavors of the south! The spices that they have are just out of this world. They certainly have authentic Mexican cooking in here.

Decent margharita's. ?The food is fairly ordinary. ?However, the portions are really gigantic. ?The atmosphere is relaxed while still quite loud/lively. ?The staff is nice. ?If you just want a place to drink, have decent Mexican food, and hang out at with friends, than this is a great place to go. ?Plus, it's one of the Richmond's longstanding jewels. ?So, if you want to support the neighborhood while having fun with friends, then this is a nice place to visit.

This place has the worst food I've eaten in San Francisco, bar none--overcooked, tasteless slop. Unfriendly, non-English-speaking waiters who couldn't get an order right if they actually tried. Filthy interiors (sticky, nasty tables and dirty floors). Worst of all, the entire restaurant smells like a dirty bathroom (mostly because it does indeed sport filthy, smelly bathrooms). The bathroom odor hits you the moment you walk in the door.
Perhaps this is a good drinking place, but it most definitely is not a good eating place. After a few drinks, maybe the odors of urine and filth wafting through the restaurant no longer matter so much?
There are SO many better choices for good Mexican food in the city than this--almost any place in the mission, actually.
As a non-drinker, this place has absolutely nothing to recommend it. Avoid at all costs.

Pros: Well-stocked tequila bar

Cons: Everything else...

This place is a legend! They have the best margaritas in town. If you're a fan of Tres Agaves, you must come by this place: Julio, the owner at TA, drew his inspiration from his family's restaurant out here in the Richmond. I can't comment on the food since I tend to munch exclusively on the chips and salsa at the bar, but the Margaritas alone merit 5 stars!

Tommy's has a tequila education and tasting program called the tequila PhD--and with their selection, quality, and knowledge, they HAVE the right to administer this degree! Oh yeah...and I hold the degree :)

The owner's predilection for El Tesoro is justified. Hacienda de los Diaz, 1800, and Herradura are also amazing--have a shot of each with your meal, and a margarita with whatever's in the well.

The food is very good; the tequila-culture gets this place five stars, and absolutely excellent food would earn it a sixth (if that rating could be given), but...again, the food is quite good.

Let me preface this review by stating that they do have the best margaritas in the neighborhood, their well tequila would be considered top shelf elsewhere, and their cocktails are better than most neighborhood restaurants. And that?s where all the accolades end. Last Friday, I had a small holiday retirement dinner at Tommy?s, and was only seated when my entire party arrived. I totally understand that policy, but feel that the bar would have accrued a larger tab if we were seated promptly. The establishment has a weird greasy odor and their restrooms also need a good scrub down, it looked like someone had explosive bowels and had a need to make cave paintings all over the walls. The wait staff were very courteous and hospitable, however; the owner was extremely rude, refusing to split the check for some of our party who had to make an early departure. Tommy came to take our order after appetizers and cocktails only to be disgusted when some of our party decided to split meals. During service, Tommy wore his distain on his sleeve; speaking in Spanish (which to his dismay we all understood,) to his wait staff on how displeased he was because my party was taking a picture. Not even ten minutes elapsed before he attempted to clear the plate of my friend who was out side with a phone call. A member of my party attempted to talk to him, but he didn?t seem to care. It is safe to say that I will not pay patronage to Tommy?s ever; there are other places to drink, eat, and be marry.

Pros: Great Margaritas.

Cons: Just about everything eles.

Stepping into Tommy's Mexican restaurant is like stepping into a Robert Rodriguez film. You feel that at any moment a gun slinging buckaroo is going to mosey on in and say, "I have traveled a hundred miles for the best tequilas in the world, and you're gonna give it to me"
If the too-many-too count tequilas don't get you, then the margaritas certainley will. You then have no choice of succumbing to the ultra-delicious homemade food , but that's life.

Pros: MAR GA RITA. Addictive Food

Cons: There's only one, and its way out close to the beach, but so what, just go to the beach after

Tommy's is an acquired taste. If you don't have that level of taste, you just don't get it. That's okay, more room for those of us who do. This restaurant is run by a family who has put their heart and soul into it over four decades. If you want a trendy, snooty place, this is not it. If you want a place that takes care of you and the less fortunate in their neighborhood and worships across the street at St. Monica's, come on in! It is a San Francisco institution and has the best tequila bar and best family running it. A real "work seven days a week and give your kids a better life" kind of ethic. That is what you need to be able to appreciate while you are having authentic food from the Yucatan and the best tequila anywhere.

When I was in San Francisco recently, my friend and I decided to visit Tommy's because of the good reviews that we had seen online. Our experience did not live up to the reviews. While the margaritas were good, the food was average. I've had better in Ohio. The waiter was less than friendly. He didn't make eye contact or attempt to be nice. He acted like he just wanted us out of there as quickly as possible. The worst experience came when we were leaving and asked for a cab. Tommy's refused to call a cab for us or to let us use their phone to call a cab. My friend and I had to walk several blocks, in the rain, to another establishment, where they called a cab for us after they heard how Tommy's had treated us. Evidently we were not the first persons this had happened to either. I would not recommend this place, unless you only want drinks and have your own car.

Pros: margaritas

Cons: poor service, extremely crowded and noisy, conversation nearly impossible

.

I love their margarita, after drinking there, i don't want to have margarita anywhere else. With fresh squuezed lime juice, good quality tequila, it can't go wrong. Food is great too, i had the special seafood dish, the fish was slightly charred to get it the flavor, inside is nice and moist.

I concur with the review before mine. I honestly don't know how this place has such a high rating. It may have been tasty before, but I wouldn't know because I've never been. All I know is that I love Mexican food, and after hearing a lot about this place, I finally made it there. What a disappointment it was. It was really crowded which is fine, but it looked like an apt. (low ceilings and all), that had all its walls knocked down and was (poorly) converted into a dining establishment. The cash register was right at the front door, which coincidentally was were the kitchen was. So the waiters had to walk past the people waiting to be seated, all while balancing the dishes of hot food. That grossed me out, I don't need my food to be paraded around all of those people; hair can fall, people can sneeze (you get the point). Aside from that, the tables were crowded, it was SUPER loud, the floors were incredibly dirty, and the waiters (although nice to me), couldn't for the life of them get my order right so after repeating myself a few times, I said forget it, and decided to let him order whatever the heck it was he thought I had ordered.

One margarita, one water, 2 enchilada plates and one taco ala carte later, the bill totaled about $60. Say what? Exactly? Ridiculous.

Apparently the best things on the menu are the chips and salsa and the margaritas. Basically it's not worth it. Enter (and dine) at your own risk.

P.S. This was not what I call Mexican food.

Pros: Chips and Salsa

Cons: Where to begin?

How this restaurant has garnered 9.3 rating with all of the bad reviews on this page must be a glitch in the system. Our waiter (we think he was Tommy) was miffed when we didn't want a pitcher of margueritas but rather 2 glasses instead. Our next waiter refused to talk to us in English (which I know he can speak due to an earlier visit). When the first waiter returned, he replied to a simple request by saying "OK, but the cook is gonna be angry". Angry? For a simple request about the salsa? On the side? When we told him fine, we'll just take our check for the drinks, he threw our menus on the next table. When I asked him why he was being so rude to us, he just laughed and stomped off. Enter this place cautiously....it smells, and the service stinks.

I have now read every review ever posted for this establishment and I will now give an accurate review!

We arrived at Tommy's at approx 8:00pm on Friday NIght, we parked directly in front of the restaurant. There were at least 10 people standing outside, so we thought this might be tough! We placed our name on the list and Alex the hostess, who was very gracious, told us to enjoy the bar area while waiting! We were seated under 15 minutes and our waiter Juan was very patient and professional!

The chips and salsa are the best I have had in San Francisco. The margaritas were great... had one on the rocks and blended, both were potent and the blended was with the top aged tequilla, very smooth and tasty! We ordered a combination plate and a grilled fish plate which were both very good. If you are hungry, the food does arrive quickly, this was appropriate for our hunger level. The wait staff and hostess checked on us often and were not pushy at all. We asked for our bill eventually, we were never rushed to leave and the staff all said goodbye as we passed each and every one of them on the way out the door. This did make us feel at home in the retro-old-school-mexican-decor!!!

So the service was above average for this dining experience and it was the best tasting mexican food we have experienced in the Richmond District, and we have officially tried them all now!!! We will go back very soon and also order take-out! When we entertain casual and need chips and salsa, this will now be the place to purchase them and serve at home!!!

Thanks Tommy's...Mucho Gracious!!!

I have to disagree the negativity on this website. Everyone writing about being rushed obviously arrived right before closing and wanted to sit there for an hour. This is not a "late night" place, so don't go after ten and think you can hang out. As for the food, you have to order the Yucatecan specialties if you want the excellent food. Stay away from burritos and standard Mexican fare that you can get at any taqueria; that's not what they do well. Try the pollo en salsa verde (green chicken); it is fantastic!
They still make great margaritas that are huge, not the cheapest, but certainly not as expensive as any of the upscale restaurants charging upscale prices.

My friend and I ate at Tommy's for years. We were regulars. It was insane getting a table during the dot com days (where wasn't?). We remained loyal. But, the place seemed to get dirtier and dirtier, especially that back area. The carpeting is filthy and the room smells of midew and garbage. The kitshy atmosphere was ok, but there's no excuse for an eating establishment to be that dirty. They must have made millions over the years. They need to do some serious clean up, maybe tile the floor if they can't keep the disgusting carpeting clean, before I ever return.

While the Tequilla selection in the bar is superb, the kitchen offers dishes that are at best...MEDIOCRE. Given the high prices of menu items here, one ought to expect more flavorful food.

The service here is unprofessional, hurried, and RUDE! I'm not saying the waiters/waitresses should wear suits, but they should not look like day laborers hired off of the corner of South Van Ness and Chavez just prior to our arrival. Four (4), The number of times if we were the table that orderd the salad, or Margaritas, or beer, or extra chips...we were not.

Just when we thought it could not get worse, Tommy Himself asked us to hurry up and eat, finish our beers, and pay the bill. His words," I'm not going to pay my staff to sit here while you finish up!" I will admit that it was 10:55, and they do close at 11:00. We got the sense they wanted us and a few other tables out. This became clear as they started to prop chairs on top of tables and vacuum the dining room...while we were all still eating. It is hard to imagine how such an unhospitable man can be in the business of hospitality, where grace and tact are important. I will only NOT return to Tommy's, but will also discourage others from eating there.

I went here because I always saw the cooks making food through the window and it looked good. The menu prices were expensive and the food was horrible.
They start you out with a salad which was good but the chicken burrito and their rice was horrible and flavorless. I had a margarita which was good. The bill was 45 bucks for two people and we left saying how disappointed we were with the food. The atmosphere was nice and the service was good considering how jammed they were but I would not go back to eat . I'd say this is a chips/salsa/margarita place only.

Mexican food to die for in this family owned restaurant who has been in my neighborhood for 40 years. The tamales, the burritos, the salsa, the tequila......magnifico. Always crowded but worth the wait. It is a small but very clean and popular restaurant on a busy street. They treat you very nicely. Residential parking but sometimes hard to find especially on weekend nights.

However, I chose this place as they advertised as 'open' until 11pm and I'm a late eater. My date and I arrived at 5 to 10 and were immediately asked to order our food as the kitchen would be 'closing in 20 minutes.' We told the waiter we needed a minute to read the menu. Over the next 10 minutes a different waiter came and aksed us to order every single minute. We finally did. Our food was immediately served and pretty good, but basic (I don't know about their more eclectic Yucatan portion of the menu). But my 10:30 they were closing up and then vacuuming the floor around us, disrupting our conversation greatly. They wanted us out by 11, no later and did not make us feel welcome during our entire time there. Also, no fun ambiance / music, like I was hoping for.

I've passed by Tommy's many times, without going in. Over the years, I had developed some preconceived notions about the restraurant. One was it was a drinking spot, which usually means the food is bad.

Last year I decided to try it. I was shocked to find the food exceptional. The drinks (Margaritas) are equally as good. Been back numerous times. However, service is just ok.

Its crowded and they usually try and get you away from your table as quickly as possible. Also, the decor is kind of ugly. But the margaritas are fantastic. I don't like tequila much, unless its poured by the gallon into Tommy's pitchers and buried beneath lime juice and... other stuff. Should I think twice before basing my first review on experiences I usually don't remember? Probably. But the margaritas are that good. I hear they also serve food

we were seated immediately and asked for our order about three seconds later. the food was delivered before we were even allowed to settle into our booth. the margaritas we ordered were awesome, smooth, and tasty. but the food was bland and greasy. i would recomend this for a jumping off point. get drinks here but eat some where else.

Pros: margaritas

Cons: parking, service, food

.

The place was packed but we were seated right away, and the margaritas were great. The food, however, was greasy, flavorless and overpriced. The service was our biggest complaint; we sat down and were immediately asked for our order. We said we werent ready, and within five minutes multiple waiters pressed us for our order. Our food was served quickly, and then we were basically pushed out the door. We received our check seconds after finishing our meals and our payment was taken within minutes, after which the waitstaff came back at least five times to try to take our drinks away even though we had a half pitcher of margaritas on the table! In short, the food wasn't worth the bad service or the price.

On my last visit to Tommy's we had a great meal with some yummy margaritas to wash it all down. Everything was great until we paid our bill. The bill came to $41 so I put $50 in the tray and the owner, Tommy, came and took the money. We waited for about 10 minutes for him to bring our change so we could leave the rest as a tip. We went to the front counter and asked for our change. They then had to look for my receipt and get the money out of the register. I then gave the change as a tip personally to out waiter. Tnis gave me a bad impression about this restaurant

When I was leaving the restaurant the owner called me el gordito. He may have thought that I dont understand spanish but I do. This is rude and unacceptable. Let him call his own family fat not the customers.

Tommy's Mexican Restaurant is one of my favorite places to go out in San Francisco. The place is always packed, it's got a great, fun, casual vibe, the food (central american influenced) is fantastic, and their tequila selection is unheard of. They have everything. Ask for anejo tequila or they'll pour you the cheap yellow stuff as punishment for not knowing. It's not them being cheap, it's them being tequila snobs. And once you know what to order, you're happy they are.

I became a member of the tequila tasting club about a year ago. I have never gone to Tommy's and not had an absolute BLAST! Julio and Eric man the bar and make you feel like a part of the family. These guys are just hanging out, serving great tequila to adoring regulars. Make it there at least monthly if you can.

I have to disagree with the overly negative review previously posted.... Tommy's is in my "hood" and my wife and I regularly take out of town guests to Tommy's.
The margaritas are great , food is excellent and the portions are massive. Very reasonably priced, to boot.
Parking's tough, but, hey, this is San Francisco, right?
There's a lot nearby where you can park for $10.00.

Pros: Food, Drink

I love their chimichangas....accompanied by a pitcher of margaritas and a couple good pals. It's fun, noisy, and tasty! The alphabet soup was kind of strange, but the chips and salsa, tequila, and guac more than made up for it.

Pros: limalicious margarita, tasty chimichangas

I have to say, going to Tommy's Mexican Restaurant on Geary was one of the best times I have ever had at a restaurant. Julio Bermejo was at the bar and gave us a total run down on 100% Agave Tequila's. He was extremely articulate and hilarious. I recommend this place to everyone going to San Francisco. By the way, I ordered a shrimp dish that was out of this world!

Open since 1965, I finally got to try out this institution. Thursday night was jammed, took about 20min to get a table. We started off with a couple of pitchers of margaritas, very smooth and delicious. This place has a huge selection of tequilas, you can't go wrong. Moved on to a small salad covered in a spicy tomato vinagrette and then my prawns ojo, grilled with onions and a side of blackbeans. Food was fresh and tasty, lighter than most other Mexican I've tried, portions average. Dessert was a luscious flan. Overall, a good experience but due to it's popularity, hard to get a table and difficult to have a chat.

Pros: Tequila!, Solid Food

Cons: , Noisy

For a good, STRONG, margarita- you have to go to Tommy's. They also have the largest selections of Tequila I've ever seen- infact they even advertise it. The food is great! If you've seen that movie- Once Upon a Time in Mexico- remember the "pibil" that Depp's character always ordered? Well, the pollo version is served up here and it's magnifico.

If you are in San Francisco for business or just visiting, you HAVE to make a trip to Tommy's. The Best margaritas in the world, and I've had quite a few margaritas all over the world.

I loved this place five years ago when I moved out of SF. Now that I am back, I hate it. They significantly increased the cost of the margaritas, there is no room, the food is below average, and I saw the waitress charge an extra guacamole on a bill after the people had seen the bill and given her their credit card. Go to Tia Margarita several blocks away. Great food, great bar with space, and the margaritas are just as good.

I'm not a big tequila drinker, but I'm still a big fan of Tommy's because of their carne asada and their fajitas. The meat is very tender with a hint of lime juice.

Their deep fried foods (chimichangas, tacos) aren't anything special, little more than shredded meat in a shell. And the "salad" they give you is shredded lettuce with salsa and a slice of radish.

So, skip the salad, and definitely go for the grilled food to accompany your margarita.

Although the food in this place is nothing special, as far as good, cheap mexican food, the tequila selection is AMAZING here! The food is certainly tasty enough... couple that with a few tequila sipping shots, and you're in for a wonderful night. I definitely recomment checking this place out if you are a tequila lover... there's always the option of just sitting at the bar.

If you want margaritas this is the place to go. The place is not known for it's stellar service. It's all about those tasy margaritas. If you find them rushing to get you to leave, order more margaritas, that's how they make their money.

Great Margaritas! Variety of Tequila makes all the difference. Combine with "made from scratch" ingredients and its a winner. Food not as good as drink but after a pitcher or two of margaritas, who cares?!?

The food sucks, the tequila is the best in the city. Pitchers of Margs cost almost 20 bucks, but are worth it as they are made with the fantastic herradura blanco tequila. Go for the drinks, skip the food.

This is the best Margarita Bar in the US!! There's always a scene and it's packed on the weekends. Come for the Margi's and order the specials, you won't be disappointed!

Yes it's crowded. Yes the parking is hard in the Richmond and everywhere in SF. But these are the best margaritas and largest selection of tequilas this side of the Rio Bravo so don't be a wuss and get over there and learn about real Tequilas from a bartender that is the best ambassador of Tequila in the world. Just go sit at the bar eat chips and salsa and savour the 100% blue agave tequilas. Get rid of the misconception that Cuervo Gold is a good tequila. Go for the drinks then go for the food.

The hostess was awful, I doubt she even nows the phrase "customer service". We went there with a group for my friends birthday and she gave us 5 seconds to make up our minds who was going to sit at the two tables provided for us at opposite ends of the restaurant or we would not be seated at all! What is that? The margs were ok and the food was ok, but I do not have the desire to go back. This place is overrated.

The food here is fair at best. The real attraction is the the tequila. The people who rate the food as excellent (Best in SF??) either don't know good Mexican food or had their fair share of tequila before eating. (I've seen a LOT of over-rated Mexican reviews in SF since moving here from down south) Take my advice, drink at the bar (if you can REACH the bar) and go next door to Khan Toke for some good Thai food.

If you like margaritas, this place is a must! The food is quite good also but is not the main attraction. They also try to usher diners out as fast as possible to keep the waiting list moving, which can be a good and a bad thing. First you dont have to wait to long even when the list appears huge, but you dont have much time to eat.

The food is tasty, the family is wonderful and sincere. But he reason that Tommy's is always packed to the gills are the Margaritas. Tommy's boasts the largest 100%agave tequila selection, legaly imported, in the USA. Over 80 100% agave tequilas. Trust me, if you get the chance, have a margarita from Tommys. And say hi to Julio at the bar. See ya there!
