Nelson J salon - AVEDA Color Salon

I have been dying my hair blond at Nelson J Salon for almost a year. I always book my appointment with Sara because I LOVE the way my hair turns out. I am supposed to go back to brunette by New Years but I am having such a hard time parting with the blond lol! We'll see what happens but either way Sara at Nelson J Salon will be the one I trust with my hair.

Pros: I have a busy schedule and they booked me on many a Sunday!

Cons: Parking can be tough on weekdays.

I'm not really big on writing reviews but I took the time to write about NELSON J SALON as I want everybody to know what a wonderful experience I had at this salon. Everybody was nice and very friendly, Nelson even took the time to check my hair and advise his stylist, Ray , what kind of straightening I need. The house straightening was AWESOME. My hair turned out beautiful. Plus it looks so healthy. Ray was so nice and he gave me the best hair cut ever. Everybody was commenting on it. I have never been so happy with my hair.

Believe me girls, and boys, if you want a great hair..you should go to Nelson J Salon.

Nelson came highly recommended through a friend of mine who's hair was also very damaged. I've been seeing Nelson for over a year now and my hair has never been healthier. I get complements all the time, because Nelson is sort of like an artist when it comes to matching the colors. He also "paints" the highlights which I love..so they look very natural. I came in feeling like my frizzy hair was a wreck. I am usually nervous with what people do to my hair. But Miwa was very friendly and and made me feel comfortable. After around 2 hours I walked out with shiny straight hair, and I loved it!!! She is amazing and worth every penny.

Nelson and his salon are really fun and do a great job. I love that they use natural hair coloring products and are a "green" studio. I have been to many places over the year an keep coming back to Nelson J because I rely on his salon to take care of my needs. Please check them out! They offer great discounts for 1st time clients and look for their weekly specials on last minute appointments

I have been to countless hair salon over the years from the "valley" to the westside and nobody I went to could nail the blonde color I always dreamed of having. The hair straightening specialist always ended up looking too damage or too flat, and never look natural and healthy. It was frustrating and very expensive and I started to give up hope until I came across the name Nelson j salon while searching the internet for an expert for straightening. It was very impressive that a major magazine nominated him as a top hair straightening salon and after reading more about reviews, skills and experience , I was so excited and booked an appointment immediately. Sylvia at nelson j ended up being the best hair straightening expert that I have ever had and gave me the EXACT what I wanted. She corrected past damage with some amazing treatments and my hair looks like the kind of hair that you see on models in magazines! For the first time in my life I have been stopped by strangers who want to know where I get my hair done and I feel so excited to refer them to Nelson j.

SARA is the BEST Color Specicalist. She rescued my hair. I have very damage hair from japanese straightening and she highlighted my hair using speical natural hair lift by Aveda and my hair is sooo beautiful and she even fix the condition of my hair. Everyone is the salon really care and I can't believe I got a follow up call from them to make sure my hair is good. I love sara and nelson j salon. I will go back again and again. I final found the salon that I can really trust. Next time I will try the keratin straightening there which is suppose to be better than the japanese I have got. I will let everyone know about the result. Thank you everyone at nelson j.

Staff here is very friendly but unfortunately I received the worst blonde highlight I have had since moving to LA a year ago. The entire time I was in the salon, every client (including staff) had jet black hair so that is probably their specialty. I have natural blonde hair and went it for a touch up of my dimmed roots in the front and brought in pictures of the color I wanted just in case there was confusion. Despite telling me she understood exactly what I wanted, my stylist used a technique I told her would not work on my hair (and shocker, it didn't - she had to re-do it) and gave me a yellow (!) highlight that was the most unnatural color I have ever seen. I immediately expressed my concern and the owner came over and started putting treatment on my hair. When I asked him what he was doing, he told me he was putting lowlights in my hair (w/o ever asking me what I wanted - I have never had lowlights in my life and didn't want them!!). This made the color even worse. Finally after 3+ hours, I had to leave. I came back in a second time to have the color corrected and the highlight completed since she missed a chunk at the peak of my forehead (!) during the first highlight attempt. The owner, once again, came over and told me it looked really great - he never bothered to ask me what I thought and it was my hair that had been so badly messed up. When I arrived home and looked at my hair in natural light, I noticed she had missed the same section entirely and the color was no better the second time around. Nothing was ever corrected and that front section was still a different color than the other highlight - could not believe the incompetence. Needless to say, will never go back. I had to go to another salon to have the color fixed and the front section highlighted. BLONDES BEWARE of this place!!

Sadly, being new to LA, I discovered this salon on Citysearch. When I went back and re-read the reviews it was clear that the same person wrote the 5 star reviews. It's sad that the salon feels the need to do this - the whole purpose of the review system is for customers to evaluate the salon honestly so potential customers can make an educated decision about where to go. I hope the salon better trains its colorists and stops writing their own reviews.

I went to the Nelson J salon because my hair was frizzy and I needed to have it colored too. I wanted to try a straightening treatment. Anyway, my hair turned out really pretty, both the color and the texture was the best it has ever been. After the straightening treatment I actually liked my hair for the first time ever, even without blowdrying.

This is a really great salon with very talented people who are also humble and kind. I highly recommend it.

I first went to Nelson J a month after I had gotten my blonde hair died brunette at my old salon... My family hated it, so I looked for a salon that specialized in color correction. I was there for 5 hours but I had the color washed out, my hair died blonde, shampooed twice, and I got a trim- it was worth it.
Not only did Ray make my hair blonde again, but he also created the best shade of blonde I have ever been (much prettier then my natural dirty blonde color!) He made the perfect color for my complexion. My hair wasn't damaged at all after, and my roots didn't grow out for 2 whole months. I only go to Nelson J now.

Pros: Best cut and color I have ever received.

I have been to so many hair salons since I moved to LA from NY and none have impressed me much. I had my hair done by Sylvia at Nelson J, and it looks great! By far the best my hair has looked since NYC.

I have never felt compelled to write a reivew but i just had to for Nelsons' salon. I called them on a wednesday night ready to shave my hair off after it had been burnt and fried from a bad japanese straightening at a beauty school (yes, that was a mistake!). My hair was literally one large ball of fluff from root to tip.

The receptionist was so compassionate and fit me in the next day for a consult.
When I got there the people were so friendly and normal - no silly Beverly Hills attitude at all.

Sandra, my hair dresser, really listened and gave me options and even tested out the options before I had to choose. I chose to have the Brazilian Chocolate hair treatment done and while it was pricey I have to say, IT SAVED MY HAIR.

I couldnt wash my hair for 3 days so I was worried that once I wash out the protein my hair would go back to fluff and fry, but today I washed it and with some tender loving care, hair drying and flat ironing it, I have semi-normal hair. Before the treatment, no amount of hairr drying or flat ironing helped.

Now while I am far from normal, I am so much closer than I was before and I am so very grateful for their help. Sandra even trimmed the ends for no extra charge.

I couldnt be more happy with my overall experience. They have a lifetime client in me.

I came in after searching the web for an expert colorist to darken my hair without it turning out black. Nelson took one look at me and knew exactly what shade to choose, and assured me it would stay that shade. He was right... I've been coming back for six months and still love the color and have received so many compliments. Sara is amazing and sweet and I'm so happy I found this gem of a place!

so i have been to the salon two times, i have to admit i would put my stylist to work. i had been getting my hair colored at a salon for several years but it was the same thing and the wrong color all along. i visited ray at nelson j and he not only did an amazing job on my color but also taught me things about my hair that i had no clue about. he used aveda colors which do not fade and add so much shine. my hair looks so natural with highlights that looked like the sun kissed it. its perfect!!!!! the cut lies just right with out me having to do to much to it(the products he recommended did the trick). i highly recommend him for any hair needs oh and ask for their complimentary shoulder massage. i will be back again and again. thanks ray!

I have been going to this salon for the last year. It is extremely professional and has great people working there. I see Sandra every 2 weeks to get my hair cut she does the best mans hair cuts ever, I could not imagine letting any one else touch my hair again.

My girlfriend goes to Sara to get her hair cut and hair colored. she has had so many bad trips to the salon all over town, she said if Sara ever left she would follow that's how good she is.

If your hair is OK looking or has been good 1 week but the next and your scared to try somewhere new I would take the chance and go to Nelson J, you will find your best hair.

We absolutely love this place our hair has never looked better.

I love this salon. First let's talk about the shampoo bowls. You get the treat of fully reclining while they shampoo your hair! Suzanne gave me the best shampoo of my life! That girl's fingers are magic. Jackie did my color (platinum blonde) and it turned out absolutely perfect! Sandra did my cut and I have to say the biggest kudos go to her. I asked her to do a really short hair cut on me. I wanted something like a pixie cut just to see if it looked good with my face and to see how short I could wear it. The cut she gave me is close to Rhianna's but it's edgier. I don't know if this makes sense but I feel like Sandra helped me find my face. The cut she gave me is very me and I feel sexay, confident, strong and beautiful all the time. The cut is so easy to style and it looks better and better as it grows out! Yay Nelson J!

I can't forget their esthetician, Jeanie (sorry if I spelled her name incorrectly). She's from Hawaii and she did a microdermabrasion on me that was fantastic and counseled me through some skin issues I've been having for about 5 years. She's delightful and her treatment was both effective and relaxing.

I love the fact that they use Aveda products and the salon smells delicious because of it. Lauren and Rosa at the front desk are super friendly and accommodating. Jackie recommended product to keep up my color and they had it at the front when I checked out after my appointment. I also picked up the Brazilian Acai Hair Mask (which I was told is formulated by Nelson himself) and it's been making my hair sinfully soft since my last visit. Thanks guys!

I had the most amazing experience last week at Nelson J. The place is beautiful, and the atmosphere is so down to earth. From the moment I stepped into the salon, I felt very comfortable and was well taken care of. Nelson stopped by to see how I was doing and to see if I needed anything. The rest of the staff is very friendly.

Sandra did an amazing job on my haircut. She did exactly what I asked for. I also received a complimentary neck and shoulder massage, which felt wonderful. Lauren, the manager, stopped by to see if I wanted to prebook for my next appt so I wouldn't have to deal with it as I was paying. Let me tell you I left feeling beautiful.

Kudos to Nelson J. I will not be going anywhere else!

No. No. No. Do NOT GO....I read the good reviews on here and made my apt.....(big mistake)....

I had Sarah, she did not give me the hair cut I asked for. I wanted long layers and she said, "No you have too much hair it will bubble up like a mushroom..." UMMM your a professional right?? I'd hope you wouldn't make it look like a mushroom.... ALSO after 3 HOURS the color was not what I wanted so they offered to have me come in that fri. to have it fixed free of charge.

(Question: Why do all hairstylists immediately go on the defense when you start to express concern about your hair when they're finished??? They try to convince you that what you wanted was unrealistic, when really they prly just couldn't do it...)

They said, "We'll put you with one of our top colorists Ray." I went in for him to add a few low lights. He put them in my hair while it was still wet which I've never seen before.... when he was drying it I immediately noticed THERE WERE SPOTS IN MY HAIR. YES. BROWN SPLOTCHY SPOTS ALLLLL OVER. My hair was officially worse than before I had ever stepped foot into that salon. I politely asked why there were spots, and he ran to get the owner Nelson who agreed to fix the spots himself but then had the audacity to tell me I wasn't going to be satisfied with anything they had done. UMMM are you blind? Anyone has a right to be frustrated when there are brown splotchy spots all throughout her hair...

It was completely unprofessional and unfair to deem me as an unsatisfiable customer when after hours and hours I'm left with spots in my hair, I was even trying to be polite about it all.

After 4 HOURS he lightened the low lights a bunch but there are STILL splotchy patches throughout my enitire head. I got a full refund, and quickly left the salon.

This is suppose to be a salon in Beverly Hills and they ruined my hair. Don't waste your money.

I've been coming to Nelson for a few years now and he always does a great job on my hair. I've changed my hair color a couple times in the few years I've been going and each time it comes out just like I wanted. HE?S WONDERFUL. He recently moved across the street and is kind of hard to find. So if you?re having trouble looking for the salon just call in and the front desk girls will help you out. They?re so sweet! My first time coming over to the new place and of course I wasn?t able to find it but one of the girls offered to come out and get me. The salon is still a little messy and parking is a little difficult but all that doesn?t matter when you leave feeling good about yourself. The assistants are really nice not once did they forget to ask if I wanted something to drink while I waited.

I have had bad hair coloring experiences with my former salon so I was ready for a change and went online and searched and read all the great comments about Nelson J Salon. I had a very positive first time experience with this salon and will be a repeat customer provided they don't get too expensive. The staff is friendly and helpful and not snobs at all. The staff offered hot tea and there was homebaked goodies! Nelson was in the salon on my first visit and greeted me personally and was constantly checking on his clients making sure everything is good. Nelson is very hands on and attentive, and interacts with his clients. Vivian my stylist was patient and listened to my concerns and colored my hair a natural dark brown. The best part was the 25% discount for first time clients when you bring the printout from Citysearch. After my visit a week later Nelson personally called to ask if I had any concerns or questions. Talk about great follow-up! The salon does not have their own parking lot so if your appointment is on Saturday you're in luck...park at the underground parking lot at 9665 Wilshire Blvd they charge a flat rate of $7.00!

Q.B was very talented with hair cutting. my hair color did not turn out the way i wanted it but the owner was nice enough to schedule me an appt to come in and have it corrected. so im crossing my finger that it will be right this time. but otherwise everyone in the salon is very friendly and the salon is decorated very nice it has a modern touch to it.

I'm been searching for a great stylist that can listen and vision what it is I want my hair to look like. I've been thru half a dozen stylists all over LA and just recently I decided to take a risk, I read reviews on LA city search and I booked my appointment on LifeBooker dot com, got a great discounted price and I left the salon with the best hair cut and color of my life. This is it, I can't go anywhere else, I've finally found my salon and stylist I love. I got my hair cut and colored last Thursday, since then I get compliments everywhere I go. I am so incredibly picky about my hair, so when I left the salon and paid only $200 for a full color, cut and blowdry I really won the jackpot. Not to mention that everyone at the salon was extremely nice and welcoming. The shampoo bowls are the most comfortable I have ever sat in, your neck is not in pain and you can completely relax. The whole staff is very knowledgeable about all their products, colors, and services. The owner introduced himself and welcomed me.

The salon itself is tucked away from the main street, so if you have problems finding the place, call the receptionist, they were so nice and helpful.

I am so happy with my cut and color!!!

I read all of the reviews on City Search before choosing Nelson J. Salon. If it didn't already have such rave reviews about the customer service, quality of service and non-pretentiousness I would have stopped at the address: Beverly Hills. Being intimidated by high prices and snobby rich folk (I know-I'm sure it's only a stereotype. I've got nothing against the people of the 90210 area code), I usually avoid this city like the plague. But I'm glad I didn't. The reviews I read were all dead-on! The customer service at this salon was impeccable. After being treated so nicely I thought for sure the prices would be through the roof for such luxurious service. But they weren't! I got a color (no cut) at a very reasonable price. Initially, my appointment was set up with Nelson. He met with me and advised me that due to the fact that he is the owner he charges significantly higher prices than the rest of his stylists. I really appreciated his honestly. He graciously set me up with Sara after I opted for the less expensive deal and Sara was fantastic!!! Both she and Nelson really listened to me and took time to make sure they interpreted my goals accurately. They made me feel comfortable and at ease by explaining what they were going to do to achieve the look I wanted (I don't like surprises when it comes to my hair). Sara did an amazing job with my color. I am VERY particular about my color. So much so that I usually do it myself because I don't trust anyone else to get it exactly the way I want it. But I now trust Sara! She definitely knows what she is doing. I will be going back to this salon for sure...even if it is in Beverly Hills ;)

I went into Nelson J Salon to go from a blond to a brunette. I was very upset when my hair came out an ashy red color. I expressed my concern to the stylist but she insisted it was just the lighting and that it was brown. I called back a couple days after the appointment to ask if I could get it re-done and they said that they would need to charge me, for a SECOND time. Two weeks later I am still getting comments on my red hair.

Best Customer Service, friendly staff, and Sandra is very talented hairdresser, Nelson was kind enough to say hello. I was in LA for a day (from Australia), and was recommended by a friend and after found the reviews on citysearch, I decided to call the salon in the morning. I was happy to get the appointment at 10.30am. Thanks to Sandra, I am very happy with my hair. She is such an easy going person and very professional. I was also happy with the manicure (sorry, I would love to know the manicurist's name). However, disappointed since it was my first time, I didn't get the 25% discount like everybody else. :-( Maya M.

Since moving to Los Angeles 5 years ago I have been in search of colorist who could give me the same beautiful natural looking blonde color I was getting in Toronto. After going to Frederick Feckai Salon, David Paul (and Saw David Paul himself who was the first to destroy my hair), Louis Lacari and countless other high end salons, paying up to 400.00 a color job, I ended up having to chop off all my long blonde hair which had become yellow, and broken, dye it brown, and grow it out to start all over again. I grew it out for 2 whole years, and I very nervously saw Nelson today. He did a truly amazing job! Thank Gawd too, because if he didn't I would have lost my mind! If you are looking for beautiful, natural looking color that is easy on your hair, Nelson at Nelson J is your guy!

Vivian and her assistant Sara were an excellent team that really understood hair and the tools and products with which they worked. Vivian met the challenge of helping my hair out of a multi-colored mess! And they use Aveda too!! which is very nice and less abrasive.
The salon seemed overall to follow a standard of precision and attention to detail which really made my experience very satisfying ~ I am so happy with my hair :]

Went to Nelson after reading reviews here on citysearch...he really is wonderful! I went in to have orange hair fixed from overly zealous past colorists. Nelson's salon got me in really quickly for what I thought I was just a consultation, but Nelson did my hair right then and there! All of the salon staff are super friendly, (not too pretentious for a Beverly Hills salon) the salon is lovely, and Nelson is a sweetheart! He even does a really nice head and neck massage! I had a really great experience...and my hair is awesome! My hair is not easy, curly but fine, and way over-lightened. Nelson fixed it-it's mellowing into a lovely brown-and did one of the best cuts I've had in years (again, my hair is NOT easy to cut). Plus, my hair has never felt this soft and healthy after just getting color, and it's lasting really well, too.
I finally feel like I've found someone who really gets it/knows what he is doing. He is a bit on the expensive side. I have paid as much in the past, but didn't always get my money's worth. Nelson seems to be worth it...I'm definitely going back, so I'll see...

For great color and cut see DQ. He knows the perfect cut for your face and is awesome with color. He is an "artist" so the hair thing comes naturally to him. He is also a good listener and will help you achieve "the look" you desire AND more importantly, will tell you if you are way off base with the look you desire! One of my favorite things about DQ's cuts is they grow out great! You never have a bad hair day!!

so i am very picky and untrusting of going to new people for my color. but since i had just moved here from NY and did not have a colorist here, i went out on a search... after many bad color jobs and frustration, i finally found the nelson j salon on citysearch. and thank god! i had such an amazing experience there, that i will be going back as long as i am on the west coast. Vivian was really attentive and listened to exactly what i wanted. we worked together throughout the whole process, and the final results were hands down AMAZING! they use all natural hair color products, and my color has not seemed to fade or take root for many weeks now. she gave me exactly the strawberry blonde that i was desiring. and nelson j made sure that everything was going well the whole time! they were both so nice and comforting- wanted me to be happy... and i sure am. YEA! plus your first time visit is 25% off when you mention citysearch. i highly recommend this salon. finally!

I have been to countless hair colorists over the years from the "valley" to the westside and nobody I went to could nail the blonde color I always dreamed of having. The color always ended up looking too brassy or cheap, and never classy or realistic. It was frustrating and very expensive and I started to give up hope until I came across the name Nelson Chan while searching the internet for an expert colorist. It was very impressive that a major magazine nominated him as a top colorist and after reading more about his skills and experience , I was so excited and booked an appointment immediately. Nelson ended up being the best hair colorist that I have ever had and gave me the EXACT color I wanted. He corrected past damage with some amazing treatments and my hair looks like the kind of hair that you see on models in magazines! For the first time in my life I have been stopped by strangers who want to know where I get my hair done and I feel so excited to refer them to Nelson because I know he will make them look gorgeous! I would also like to add that Nelson and EVERYONE of his staff members were so sweet and made sure that my experience was a comfortable and happy one. Nelson's salon is located in Beverly Hills so I was expecting some arrogance and attitude but there is absolutely none of that here! Please see Nelson if you are seeking the best in color and hair care. You will be so happy you did! Oh and by the way, his prices were extremely reasonable and lower than most of my previous stylists!

I just want to share my great experience with other readers. I went to nelson j salon for the first time to get my hair color done. I was consulted by Nelson about my hair and he gave me the best suggestion. Then he assigned his stylist to take care of me and the whole time when I was there Nelson came few time to make sure I am doing well and having a good time. Also his staffs are super nice and very talented, I got the best hair color and cut. I love it and I got 50% off for my first time visit.

I never write reviews on websites but I had to let everyone know what an absolute GEM this salon is. Walking in I was immediately greeted by Nelson himself and introduced to my darling hair colorist. She was amazing. But what was even better was the attention I got from Nelson. He checked up on me and my hair maybe 4 times and made sure I was happy when it was done. And the results were fabulous. They gave me exactly what I asked for and were completely unpretentious. Not to mention the half off offer going on through citysearch. I got the best highlights I've had in a long long time and for a steal!!!

I've been coloring my hair for a long long time now. I've been all over LA looking for a stylist that will get the color just right but its hard. I finally tried this salon because of a friend. She's been going there for some time now and it always comes out great. So I went in and I love it! DQ used this product echo something. I believe its Echo Color or something like that. It doesn't have that hair dye smell like the other stuff and its easy on the skin and yes his name is DQ! Cool guy! Just ask him and he'll tell you more. Very nice staff.

Domingo at the Nelson J Salon does a great cut - and I've been to what seems like every salon in the area. The staff at the front desk was rude and didn't treat me very well... at the old salon I never had the problem.

It is the first time I tried Eco Color in nelson j salon. It is really cool. It smell like so gooooood and It doesn't burn my hair and scalp. Very nice! My hair looks and feels amazing. I have very difficult hair to deal with and my hairdresser DQ took his time explained to me and made me feel very comfortable. Salon looks very nice and I feel like a celebrity the whole time I was there. LOVE IT!

I am very happy. Youn the stylist took care of my hair very well. Salon is clean and the shampoo bowl is like a bed very comfortable. Front desk is good and very nuce. The only thing is a little hard to find the shop. But overall very please.

I never liked my hair, much less loved it, before I went to Nelson. I wanted to try the Japanese straightening but didn't want my hair to be completely flat. He did the process and made sure my hair still had plenty of body and it didn't damage the color. He was very attentive, as were his wonderful assistants. Everyone in the salon is very friendly and want everyone to have an excellent experience. I feel like a new person, am so happy with my new hair. Thank you, Nelson!

I've been coming to Nelson for a few years now and he always does a great job on my hair. I've changed my hair color a couple times in the few years I've been going and each time it comes out just like I wanted. HE?S WONDERFUL. He recently moved across the street and is kind of hard to find. So if you?re having trouble looking for the salon just call in and the front desk girls will help you out. They?re so sweet! My first time coming over to the new place and of course I wasn?t able to find it but one of the girls offered to come out and get me. The salon is still a little messy and parking is a little difficult but all that doesn?t matter when you leave feeling good about yourself. The assistants are really nice not once did they forget to ask if I wanted something to drink while I waited.
