Though this store looks small, it carries a little of everything. Its not too often that the helpful staff cannot find an item that I have wanted. They've even special ordered items for us with pretty quick delivery.

Los Altos True Value is definitely not a big "warehouse" store -- you're not going to find a huge selection of items, particularly for more specialized needs (for example, I learned that they don't carry cabinetry, shelving, or associated hardware). But on the other hand, *unlike* the big warehouse stores, the employees are always at hand to help you find the right products. Overall, it's a great "neighborhood" hardware store.

I asked them to hold a blue wheelbarrow for 24 hours and they agreed. I showed up with a pickup truck borrowed from my brother within 18 hours only to be told that only red wheelbarrows were left because my wheelbarrow was sold to a customer who gave them $10 more than their asking price. Now you would expect them to be apologetic and try to work something out for me. No! No apologies, didn't try to get me a blue one ASAP, and didn't offer to give me a discount on a red one. The manager said, "I wasn't here last night. There was nothing I could do." Huh? You think selling an item on hold to a higher bidder only happens in a used car store and never in a hardware store, let alone in Los Altos.
These people only care about money and not service or quality. Don't trust these scums. Don't give them your business. I hope HD and OSH crush them soon.
This store deserves zero star.
PROS: None.
CONS: Dishonest. Disorganized.

If you need informed assistance with home repair or household supplies this is a great place to come. Their prices may be higher than at the big box stores, but your blood pressure level will be much lower when you shop here. They are always happy to help, and if they don't have something in stock, they will order it for you.

The owner and employees of this hardware store are always friendly and helpful. Irregardless the size of your purchase, they treat you like you are buying the most expensive product they have in the store.
PROS: Great customer service and helpful employees
CONS:

This True Value is a family run business owned by Henry Nesmith. While prices may be higher than the large chains, the convenience of the neighborhood store plus the extra service they provide makes it all worthwhile.

Los Altos True Value Hardware store has a great selection of items needed for your home and a grat selection of plumbing items (sinks, showers, toilets, faucets, etc). The staff is what sets this apart from any other hardware store. They are very helpful and knowledgeable.

This is a great local hardware store in Los Altos. Henry, the owner is awsome. I always get the attention I need, and the staff is always willing to go out of their way to help.

Although you may pay alittle more at the Los Altos Hardware store, the service is outstanding with respect to finding what you need and/or explaining to you what you might need based on the problem you are having. It is definitely the place to go if you do not like the lack of assistance at the chain stores.

They know they have to offer a competitive advantage sinced they can in no way compete on price with Home Depot or even OSH. So they do it on service. Super friendly, solicitous, bordering on ingratiating. It you have a specific problem for which you seek a creative solution, they would be worth the premium price. If you know what you need to buy, and don't need any help, you're better off buying more cheaply at a warehouse store when you are near one.
