Powerhouse Gym

There are a lot of WOW! reviews and a few YUCK! reviews of Powerhouse, but I feel it falls in between. It's not sparkly new or perfectly clean, but it is a serviceable gym with many, many options epecially in the weight training department. I have never had to wait for a cardio machine, although I wish they had a little more variety (rowing machine, different types of ellipticals, etc.) There is lots of room for what you want to do, and everyone is very friendly and polite about sharing equipment. I never feel intimidated by anyone, and the trainers are nice and don't act like prima donnas. My one wish is that they had more plyo- and balance-training tools. They need a full component of balance boards, kettlebells, bosus, bands, tubes, etc. that belong to the gym, not the trainers! And their ab area is a little anemic, it could really use more mats, rollers, pilates balls, etc. These tools are the cutting edge, and Powerhouse should make them available.

Bathrooms and showers are fine, again not shiny new but clean. The music in the bathroom is sometimes super cheesy Kenny-G type musak, which is a bit jarring after the fun music in the gym.

Give it a try, it's a friendly place -- maybe it's not perfect for everyone, but it works for a lot of us.

I've never been much of a trash talker let alone the kind of person that reviews businuseses on line, but I just had to review THIS gym. This gym consists of broken down equipment, a man who cleans weights that does a half a## job, a bizzare setup of equipment where u have treadmills that are next to a squat rack "which is crooked" which are next to a shoulder press "u get the picture?" Nothings organized, the staff is very rude, and they refused me a refund when cancelled my mebership and they charged me two extra months when I went to college! And please, "there's no meatheads" what kind of phrase is that reviewers? If your intimidated of young, in shape males, workout at home! The reviewer who stated this gym is bad is a nice man who was descriminated against by a jerk who calls himself an owner

Gym of the year award goes to Powerhouse Gym...I have been to all the local places and this is by far the best. They offer free towels, free aerobics, free personal training...In the back of my mind I thought maybe this was just a place for buff guys , but the truth is, it seems to be about 45% women and most people are over 35 years old....seems they have even less hard core guys that the 24 hour fitness...and there is a private training space for the really bashful...they also have new equipment, big flat screen TV's ,price was agreeable , and it is clean and attractive....I feel safe here , and the atmosphere is just so friendly without the pushy sales staff at some of the other places I went to ...Great Gym and a good find! oh , and the pilates class kicked my butt!

The secret is out now !!! I have seen lots of gyms and fitness centers , and this one has got to be in the top 1 or 2 I have ever been to. First of all it is HUGE , with lots of sunlight and windows all around , high ceiling's and a real open air quality. The equipment is new and they have so much stuff , I can't think of anything they don't have. There is even a private quiet training and stretching area. and they give you a bunch of free training sessions to get you started.I don't do much aerobics but there are lots of classes and from what I hear they are great , but I did take a Yoga class , and have never been so relaxed, I think the teacher was Nicole and she was the greatest.The staff is very friendly and they don't have a bunch of commisioned saleswhores running around bothering you . The rest of the place is well run ,seems like a very hands on approach . and the atmosphere is really nice here. and only $32 a month , and I got a month free to go with my membership. Nice to be at such a nice place.

I can't begin to say enough great things about this gym; the people are extremely friendly, the atmosphere is open, upbeat and safe and the classes and trainers are excellent. I really loved this gym when I first joined over a year ago, but since that time everything has just gotten better. You'll see every shape and size there. It's a gym that attracts people who are serious about their fitness and at the same time want a sense of community. I'm not sure who that other person is who wrote that scathing review, but my sense is he's just one of those really unhappy people who are really miserable to be around. The great news is that you won't find him or others like him at Powerhouse!!

I highly recommend Powerhouse Gym. It has plenty of machines, classes, and friendly staff members. It is newly renovated, which makes for a nice, clean atmosphere. But, perhaps the best part is that it's doesn't get packed, even during peak hours. Overall, a wonderful place to work out.

As someone who was born and raised in this area, I can say that as far as gyms are concerned, I have seen them come and go...and mostly they go. Powerhouse has maintained a strong presence in Redwood City for many years. I have been a member for 15 years and it just keeps getting better! The fact that a multiplex movie theater and retail complex has just been built right across the street is a huge plus. Most gyms are on the outskirts of town, or in industrial areas, but Powerhouse is right in the center of the urban hub in Redwood City. Powerhouse is a place where fitness program can be engaged in on a serious, or casual level. I know many professional athletes including numerous 49ers work out at the gym. My own 75 year old father, also works out there and absolutely loves it. He also enjoys the personal trainers available. Keep it up Powerhouse!

I normally take both the kickboxing and step classes. They are both very good and I like the instructors Fi and Stan. Definitely a great workout and fun to do. The gym itself is clean, good music, and is not too busy. Very relaxed atmosphere.

I highly recommend the gym classes that are offered at Powerhouse Gym. The have great boxing classes, conditioning and spinning classes. I also like the people who go to this gym -- they are into their workouts and keep to themselves. It's not a pickup joint.

Quite frankly, I cant see anybody with a right mind liking this gym. This gym sure has had a makeover, for the worse that is. The gym never really experienced a makeover, all that happened were new treadmills were added to the gym floor and a few cheesy signs with out of shape people smiling on them were put on the outside of the gym. This was a pathetic attempt of the owner to try to get a more mainstream population into this gym "too bad it hasn't worked". There's atleast five machines that are near broken and downright dangerous for people to use, the personal trainers (not including matt) are terrible and belong teaching kindengardners how to kick soccer balls around soccerballs around. To top it off, this gym is far more expensive than the 24 in san carlos and many other gyms. Did I mention it's dirty as hell?

This is a nice place with a really nice friendly attractive atmosphere. the classes and teachers are great , especially yoga class, the teacher , Nicole is really great. there are new cardio machines everywhere and this place is huge, the weight area is the biggest I have seen and place covers a whole block in downtown right across from the new theatre. It is not intimidating and they have people there all the time cleaning the equipment and bathrooms. they have just remodeled and gotten new equipment and I heard they got rid of a few meatheads too, I read the other review and it sounds like he was one of the guys they kicked out for dropping weights and stuff. there aren't any meatheads there, everyone is really nice and I feel safe. I only paid about $30 a month, and it is very reasonable. definetly the best gym I have seen.
