This is your only choice in the city of Walnut Creek for any kind of decent selection of Japanese foods.

The shelves are packed and dusty, the aisle small and crowded (even if there are only 2 people in the store) but there are some treasures in here. No fresh produce to speak of (one very small area that includes prepackaged items).

People are always buying meat and fish when I shop there so they must be okay (I have no idea, I don't eat it.)

The guys who work there have always been respectful and helpful so I give them points for customer service and decent prices. But they lost points for the lack of general cleanliness of the place. But hey - I find things here that I would have to drive a long way to find elsewhere and I am used to shops like this.

Pros: Lots of imported Japanese stuff

Cons: Small, crowded, kinda dirty

I've read good reviews and decided to save myself a trip to Berkeley Bowl where I am going once in awhile for sushi grade fish and other good things. The place is tiny but has a lot of interesting things. Almost no parking, unless you park at neighbor business parking. They had 4 different kind of sushi grade fish, looked not bad. I asked for 1/4 - 1/2 pound of each, owner showed me nice piece I really liked. . When I picked wasabi, ginger, sea weed salad, other things my fish was already packed. I wanted to surprise my wife with sashimi dinner. I myself was very surprised to discover at home 4 different pieces of tail. The fish I brought home was noy sashimi. I hate dishonesty, I would accept 1, even 2 so - so pieces, but paying $15-$25/pound for tails? Bye-bye Diablo oriental. Byers beware, don't trust, watch.

This is the only Asian supermarket in Walnut Creek and has a great location close to the downtown area. It's a tiny place and has a decent selection of Chinese and Japanese food items and good prices. But with the opening of County Square in Pleasant Hill, I'm sure they lost a lot of business.

The usual mom-and-pop oriental food store - you wonder how they get so much stuff into so small a space - with a good selection of all the basics. But even better, they import taro leaves from Hawaii and make their own laulaus. Sometimes they have frozen taro leaves for sale, enabling you to make your own laulaus.
