Book Alley is not the place to go for the sort-of-recent best seller, and they're proud of it. They do have fairly high prices for used books, but the books are almost all first editions, and they have a great selection of rare and hard to find books. The selection is wide and they cover a nice range of subject. They also have a decent selection of trashy Sci-Fi for cheap near the back door.

PROS: Pricey
CONS: Good selection

Old-school used bookstore but not remotely as stuffy as you'd expect from the exterior. Crusty-but-friendly owner completes the cliche. Great selection of old books, especially rare and out of print 1st editions at fair prices. Good on history (American and world), Shakespeare and arcana. Don't expect to find the latest hot novel here. Another nice touch: When I asked for William Bennett's "Book of Virtues", the clerk sneered. You gotta love 'em.

OK. Not quite as good as the book shops in London, Paris, and New York, but this small used book shop near Pasadena's "theater district" does have that dog-eared charm. The shelves are crammed with good fiction, history, and non-fiction of all kinds, hardbound and paperback. Books waiting to be filed are serenely stacked on the floor. And the quiet atmosphere exudes the good humor, judicious gossip, and discriminating taste found in co-owner Peter Hay's own book: Theatrical Anecdotes, published by the Oxford University Press.
