My son started at the Pacific Beach Kenyon??s Studio in early 2007 just after his 6th birthday. There is a second studio in Solana Beach led by his wife Master Vicki Kenyon. Their two daughters also attend lessons in Pacific Beach.

It is obvious to me as a mom and no martial arts expert that Kenyon??s Soo Bahk Do is much more than defense or a work out to these young kids. It's about respecting others (adults and other children), building self-esteem, discipline and focus, endurance, observing and understanding behavior and body language, learning and improving technical and strategic skills, coordination, managing and controlling emotions, including anger or fear. All of these aspects have been beneficial to my child and have helped him mature.

The Kenyon??s have a wonderful way of teaching kids. Kids of all ages adore and respect them. Their teaching incorporates a profound knowledge of the history, philosophy, theory and practice of martial arts and innate pedagogic skills. Master Kenyon explains the theory behind each complex form that the student will acquire as second nature and that form the building blocks of this discipline. What I also like is the sheer joy and laughter that emerges between the at first shy but increasingly powerful kia during warm up and training.

There many other reasons I particularly appreciate Kenyon??s Soo Bahk Do. First, every child will quickly learn that teaching and volunteering is an integral part of this community. Second, as children get older, some classes are taught by two or more highly qualified teachers that greatly complement Master Kenyon??s classes. Each teacher contributes to a different aspect of the students?? enrichment. Elements of philosophy, meditation, yoga, breathing techniques, self defense are incorporated into the training and kids and adults leave the studio uplifted and with a sense of purpose and resolve.

I highly recommend Kenyon??s Soo Bahk Do to children and adults. You will get much more than just a work out! Please visit the website at http://www.kenyons.com and check out the studios in Pacific and Solana Beach.

Pros: much more than martial arts

Cons: none

My wife and I have been training with Master Daymon Kenyon at Kenyon's Soo Bahk Do for many years now. Master Kenyon (a 7th degree master in the art of Soo Bahk Do) is a knowledgeable and talented martial artist and a dedicated and dynamic instructor. Studying Soo Bahk Do (a traditional Korean martial art) has made me and my wife healthier both physically and mentally. If you are interested in learning the martial arts or are looking for a great martial arts program for your children, you can't go wrong with Kenyon's Soo Bahk Do.

When my husband first suggested that I join him at Kenyon's Soo Bahk Do after my old aerobics gym closed, I was a little leery; martial arts didn't really seem like something women like me got involved in. Boy was I wrong. I have now been studying the traditional Korean martial art of Soo Bahk Do for the past 10 years and I love it. Daymon Kenyon (7th degree) and his wife Vicki (5th degree) are both masters in the art and wonderful instructors. It has been a great experience and I recommend it to everyone, women and children in particular.

Pros: Instruction in traditional Korean martial art of Soo Bahk Do

Kenyon's Soo Bahk Do has been in business at the same Pacific Beach location for over 40 years. The business was started by Fred Kenyon in 1968 and is currently run by his son, Daymon Kenyon. Daymon Kenyon is a 7th degree master in the art of Soo Bahk Do and has been my instructor for the past 13 years. Master Kenyon is a knowledgeable and talented martial artist and a dedicated and dynamic instructor. Studying Soo Bahk Do has made me and my wife healthier both physically and mentally. As good as Master Kenyon is at instructing adults, he truly excels when teaching young children. I am constantly amazed by his ability to keep a class of 5-7 year-olds focused and attentive. If you are interested in learning the martial arts or are looking for a martial arts program for your children, you can't go wrong with Kenyon's Soo Bahk Do.

Message from Kenyon's Soo Bahk Do

Kenyon's Soo Bahk Do offers instruction in the traditional Korean martial art of Soo Bahk Do.

Soo Bahk Do has roots in the ancient indigenous Korean martial arts of Soo Bahk Ki and Tae Kyun. These were combined with other fighting principles (e.g. Chinese Kung Fu, Shotokan Karate) and moral guidelines such as the philosophy of Do (Tao), No Ja (Lao Tzu) and Lee Do Ja (Confucius) by Grandmaster Hwang Kee into what is now known as Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan. Soo Bahk Do (or Tang Soo Do as it was once known) is a forerunner of modern Taekwondo.

Kenyon's Soo Bahk Do is a member in good standing of the U.S. Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation®.

Instruction in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and Aikido is also available.
