The wine store had a nice selection and was a pleasant surprise. The staff was inviting. The restaurant had a nice, cozy, intimate feel even though it was very busy. We ordered Ravioli with Sweetbreads, a nice bolognese-style pasta, and the definite winner- the steak! Dessert was not memorable. At the end of the night, we had a fantastic meal, a nice atmosphere, excellent service and attention.

First of all... no, I don't work at Prima. But I've dined there about 15 times in the last year, and I was just there last week. The food is some of the most authentic regional Italian in the Bay Area (my other favorite is A16 in San Francisco). The menu changes weekly, the ingredients and the spirit of the food is top notch, the service is knowledgable and elegant, the tables are romantically lit, and the wine list is one of the most comprehensive and extensive in the Bay Area (they have a wine shop attached), and the managers are always keeping a watchful eye. If you're a foodie, don't miss this restaurant. If you're a wine lover, make sure you check out the display of large format first growths!

My mother is italian, so granted, I may be biased. I thought that the food was terrible, over-priced, and downright lowsy. They obviously do not understand the basics of Italian cuisine- SIMPLICITY=QUALITY.

Past was certainly NOT al dente, and eating pasta any other way is a sin.

Prima has a very nice atmosphere. With that said, the food and service is mediocre. We went to Prima to celebrate my husband?s birthday. It was a very rainy day and there were accidents all over. A few people in the party were late and this irritated the wait staff. We understood and ordered quickly. When all was said and done our bill for 8 people was over $1000 and we were asked to leave because the room was reserved for another party! I could not believe we were asked to leave. I will never go to this place again.

Prima has come a long way since I first dined here 10 years ago. The new chef/owner is a real asset to this establishment. For a very unique dining experience, ask for the chef to prepare a meal for you. There is no chance that you will be dissappointed. From antipasto to pasta, fish, meat and dessert - every dish is fresh and flavorful. I loved the wine we were suggested to drink and was able to take a bottle home with me (after purchasing it from their wine shop next door).

Prima didn't disappoint us entirely, but at the same time it didn't impress us immensely either. Their service and decor is quite good. The tuna appetizer and the spinach gorgonzola salad was very good, comparable to some of the good S.F. restaurants. But the New York steak that I ordered was quite mediocore. Considering I spent almost $35 dollars on that piece of meat, I had higher expectations! The osso buco my husband ordered was more flavorful, but to me this restaurant has a long way to go before people start queing up for their entrees. If I could do it all over again, I would get more of their appetizers, make a meal out of it. Have their wine, skip the main course entirely, and head for their desserts, if I have any room left!

I loved this restaurant. The food was absolutely amazing. The service was fantastic. My server was extremely knowledgeable, which seems to be rare lately. I came on a Friday night. There was a live Jazz band that is there regularly. The wine list was amazing. There were well over a 1,000 wines on the list. Overall, I'd have to say this one of my most memorable dining experiences.

    Message from Prima Restaurant

When Michael and Janet Verlander rented the shoebox-sized storefront at 1522 North Main Street in Walnut Creek in May of 1977, they had no idea that 38 years later, it would have become the East Bay’s premier wine and food destination. It started as a deli with a cheese counter, a hot plate and a few racks of wine. But these were dynamic times, and Michael, driven by a passion for wine, quickly forged close relationships with some of California’s newest and best names in the wine business. Duckhorn, Silver Oak, Kistler and Au Bon Climat, for example, all sold their first vintages at Walnut Creek Wine & Cheese. Michael still tells of talking Dan Duckhorn out of 14 cases of his first vintage of Three Palms Merlot and selling it for the princely sum of $14 per bottle!

Everything changed when the Verlanders, while taking a rare vacation in Italy in the late eighties, had an epiphany while dining at Ristorante Belvedere atop La Morra hill in Barolo. They were so taken by it all that they decided to import their Piemontese experience to Walnut Creek. Walnut Creek Wine & Cheese became successively Prima Café, Prima Trattoria e Negozio di Vini, and finally PRIMA. With the change came expansion. The shoebox doubled in size with the addition of what is now the Caminetto fireplace dining room.

When I started at PRIMA as Wine Director in the spring of 1994, what is now our wood-burning oven and Enoteca dining room was a sushi bar, and the space now occupied by PRIMA Vini, our wine shop, was another restaurant. Things grew quickly as both the restaurant and wine store’s reputation spread. Then in 1999, the Verlanders recruited Chef Peter Chastain to run the kitchen, further cementing the restaurant’s place as one of the East Bay’stop wining and dining destinations.

Chef Peter and I purchased PRIMA from the Verlanders in 2005, and have since made it our mission to not only preserve the original Italian sensibility that drove the business’ metamorphosis, but to enhance it, making subtle refinements to the menu, the appearance of the dining space, and to a wine list that now numbers over 1300 selections, with a particular focus on the Italian wine that best suit our cuisine.

These days PRIMA is hitting on all cylinders. Under the guidance of outstanding General Manager Jordana Arey and Chef Peter’s unwavering focus on only the best organic seasonal ingredients, PRIMA has elevated the dining experience to one of the best in the Bay Area; while PRIMA Vini, with its friendly, professional and experienced staff, is known not only as Walnut Creek’s most respected source for the world’s rarest and most exciting wines, but also as an internet retailer of national repute
