This resturaunt proved me wrong about Brazilian food. The appetizers to desserts were beautifully decorated and delicious. I had some raw meat that had to be fondued and the two orders of creme brule. The price was up there when you add multiple drinks for every person. The atmosphere is uplifting. Everyone should try this place. The down side is that it is hard to find parking!
I went to this place as a sort of random choice. The menu looked somewhat interesting, but turned out to be a disappointment.
I had the braised short ribs which were bland, too mushy, and kind of a mess. Definitely not worth the money.
The atmosphere is ok, but I don't really recommend it.
I came here with my two sisters and had a blast; I will definitely take my boyfriend here. Parking is tough in the neighborhood, so I suggest you do the valet service- it's only ten dollars (we were there on a Thursday, don't know how much it will be on the weekend). Definitely make reservations because it gets really busy. Although inside was very nice, we sat outside and it was great how they had heat lamps for when it?s cold- but I only suggest you eat outside if it's NOT WINDY. Also, the restaurant is set on a little hill- so it felt a little funny sitting slanted and all. But after you drink some wine, you won't care! Monday through Friday they offer the pre-fix menu for only about 30 dollars. You get soup or salad; choice of appetizer and main course. It was great!!!! Everything was very flavorful- but don't expect the portions to be big, I thought it was perfectly sized. But that shouldn't matter because you already get a little full from the salad and appetizer all to yourself. What was really fun was watching the Brazilian dancers dance on the bar. Our waitress was very nice to us but she seemed to lack at the end with giving us attention and service. But other than that, I totally recommend this restaurant. Go here for a great atmosphere and delicious food. Great place to bring your close friends or romantic partner.
Pros: Affordable valet parking, delicious food, pre-fix menu, ambience
Cons: Lacked a little service at the end of our meal
My wife, son and I were walking in North Beach and as we walked past this restaurant it looked nice. The hostess, Lenha, was very courteous, after chekcing with the appointment girl they told us that without a reservation we could only stay until 8:30pm, it was 7:45 so we decided to go in, thinking that we may be in for a pleasant surprise. The waiter seemed like he was having a bad day since we started, he took more than 5 minutes to show up. In the meantime we looked around the place and at other patrons, no menus, nothing else except wait and hold our hunger. After the order was placed at around 7:55, at 8:25pm our 3 year old son asked me with great concern why it was taking so long to bring his spaghetti? I just wished the manager would have been present to hear and see his comments, I could not have reflected the situation better; nothing came to our table until 8:40pm, the waiter apologized and said that our tickets somehow got misplaced, a $10 dessert was on the house; nice gesture. The bus boys were very polite and courteous, (managers take note for development, area of opportunity). The spaghettini was good, and so was the rib eye, I have had much better for much less, but I guess rent is high, portions are hearty and taste healthy, meaning not heavy with grease or fat. There were other dishes that looked great, like short ribs and one that looked like a pumpkin. I would like to go back to have a second opinion and make a more balanced judgment, a bad day cold happen to anyone and it would be unfair to make an opinion based on the afore mentioned circumstances. I would go again.
Went here on Saturday night and spent over $200 on food and wine. It was obvious from the beginning that my server (Sepideh) had every intention of rushing us through the meal. Pouring the full bottle of wine out instead of just serving appropriate portions and leaving the rest on the table was the first sign. Telling us that we "should order now because the kitchen is really busy" was another sign. We were still looking at appetizers. Dessert was interesting. Getting the bill and having her check it for money before the dessert even arrived was pretty rude. She then stood in the doorway outside watching our every move. We paid to get her off our back and it was confirmed that she didn't really care what kind of service were received as she snatched it up, dropped it back off and walked out the front door with a "good luck" from her friend. I know about working in a restaurant and needing to get somewhere afterwards, but damn. The busers were much more kind and attentive. They deserve her job.
The chefs know what they're doing and the food is good, but it's way overpriced.
I've been here before, but this was the last time. There are much better places to eat in North Beach.
Pros: Warm heaters outside
Cons: Bad service from the waitress
My Boyfriend and I went there on a Friday night, we are from Nashville, and did not have reservations. We were seated immediately, at the bar where you could see the cooking. What a treat, the food was great! We ordered the ahi tuna appetizer and the scallops... The tuna was nothing special but the scallops were a meal within it's self. We shared the Marggrosa salad, it was very good with a citrus mint dressing, yum!
For the entree we shared the Veal shank, it too was prepared very well and was a great compliment to everything else we had ordered.
Would definitely go there again. Italian, spanish...mixed well
Pros: Great food, reasonable price, good service, great setting, romantic
Cons: zero parking
My best friend and I came to Manga Rosa on a Thursday night to see "The Samba Dancers". My friend had been here before and said it was a good time, which was completly true. We ate the manga rosa salad, the polenta, The Veal and the Prawns in the pumpkin..Great dinner! The waiter had recommended everything and we took his advice. Overall I would say it was one of the best dinners we have had in SF...The food took a bit long but that is expected on a busy night..Good service, great food, amazing dancing...
i'm never going back.
my brother and i took our parents there for a celebratory dinner and the service was terrible. they were inattientive and their heads were really not "in the game". when they finally brought us our missing cutlery after our food was sitting and getting cold, they decided that it was a good idea to reach across our plates (and our food) to place them. there was only one request that was not standard (no onion in the spinach salad) and they couldn't even get that right with no apologies given when it was all piled very conspicuously on the edge of the plate. for a party of four, they assumed an 18% gratuity when they originally stated that they could not add the tip when we asked. considering the service this was way more than they deserved & thier assumption of 18% was presumptuous to say the least. after all that, the food was just okay.
i'm never going back.
This was the best birthday ever! My girlfriends and I had dinner here about a month ago and I was really impressed. I told the waiter Mark I would mention him on here because he was that good. He brought us shots for my birthday and put a candle on the shot glass. It was so cute, We got a really awesome picture. The food was amazing, Mark took care of everything we asked him to bring out his favorites and so we could share. Normally I would expect the waiter to bring to much food but he brought the right amount. Very professional and the food was Ab. Fabulous. You should try the Parks Cab. it was the best red wine I've had in years, I had the ahi and polenta together as my dinner, SO GOOD! MUST MUST TRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pros: Service, atmosphere
Cons: music is kinda bad
It is very pretty inside, a place that anyone would take a romantic date, and that is what I did. And I don't mind spending good money for good food, but the service was a little cold, and even though the food looked pretty good, there wasn't a lot of it and there was really a lot of salt. Actually, I was a little embarassed for my date, and on top of it after eating I felt really bloated from the salt - if someone had pulled my finger it would have flattened everything between there and Broadway - not a good lead in for the rest of the evening, that feeling. Though it really is a pretty place - it would still recommend going there for a drink - you're probably safe if it comes from a bottle there. There are other places if you want a real Brazillian flavor, though.
I had a fun experience at Mangarosa...I'm half Brazilian, so I was very excited of bringing a few friends to celebrate my bday. We started having the famous Caipirinhas! It was a little disapointed because the drinks were way too sweet and huge! We couldn't get a 2nd one! So I tryed the Brazilian Cosmo and it was deliscious! They make with premium cachaca instead vodka. Super. We were served by a Brazilian waitress - a sweetheart and very attentive. I wish I remembered her name. She helped us to get just the right food. I had the gnocchi....hummmmm! the best. The cheesbread melted in your mouth. My boyfriend had the hearts of palm salad - very refreshing!
The negative think...while we were waiting for our table, this blond woman, which I dont know if was hostess or manager...was very rude with the staff. I couldnt help wonder, what kind of person was that?
The place was full and she was almost yelling at the poor server or buser. No excuses for that!
Pros: Brazilian Cocktails
Fun place to go drink, not eat. The food was less than average -- the steaks were all bad (5 of us!!). The meat was well below par for a $35 Ribeye. Really.
Pros: location: North Beach
Cons: Bd meat, pricey for what it is
I was really excited to have my birthday dinner at this restaurant - but was overall, very VERY disappointed and the night ended in tears. The food was just ok. The service was dismal. And on top of it all - my camera was stolen right off the table! My party had just exited the building when I ran back to the table... and it was gone! We were seated in a secluded back area, so I know it wasn't a fellow diner. Three months later I am still upset by my experience at this restaurant. Putting things in perspective: my 12 guests were wonderful - ordering numerous cocktails and full meals, however, our waitress was non-existent and seemed bored. The food was rather dull despite the Italian/Brazilian flare promised. Needless to say, the meal and experience was not worth $60+ each person spent. I felt terrible for my guests! And just sad that, on top of it all, I had a very valuable camera with irreplaceable pictures stolen.
Pros: convenient location
Cons: dismal service, dull food... camera was stolen off table
The food was just okay. For example, several dishes seemed overly salty. The meal was expensive for the amount of food you get. You have to order side dishes separately to get a complete meal.
Pros: interesting menu
Cons: unspectacular food
The service is great. Definately make reservations if you're going on a weekend- like any place in the city! We were promptly seated and our waitress was great- very helpful. Their valet parking is nice- I hate looking for parking in North Beach! My husband got the flank steak which you cook yourself at the table- it was delish! I had the prawns which was ok...tasted a little blan. The yucca fries are ok...a little oily, same with the calamari- a little too oily- and not enough calamari. The brazillian cheese ball taste like giant gold fish crackers, in a ball bread form...it was ok, but not really cheesy enough for my taste =) My husband and I both got mojiotos but was a little too sweet- he sent his back and had them 'fix' it so it was so sugary, the waitress and the bartender were very nice about re-making his drink, but again...it was very sweet! Overall, the service is great- food was ok- ambiance is nice. I would go back if I were in the area.....
Pros: service and ambiance
Cons: a litlte pricy overall, ok food
Wow! I experienced Mangarosa on Saturday evening for dinner and drinks. I absolutley fell in love with the ambiance and the customer service was excellent. Not to mention the best part, the food! So delish! I started my meal with a warm spinach salad with these incredible mini polenta rounds! Then I had the risotto with prawns, the flavor was unsurpassed, I craved it for dinner last night! To top it all off I had the Mango creme brule and a cappucino, I was in mango commatose for the whole night. So, so, so amazing and worth every penny. We even broke a wine glass and they cared more about our safety than the fact that there was broken glass all over the place! Go to this hot spot and enjoy yourself, you will love it!
YEAH for Mangarosa! I have yet to dine in North Beach and walk out saying---damn that was good...WELL I can say it now! EVERYTHING we tried was DE-Licious! From the Mangrarosa mojita (with Remy Red, coconut rum, muddled limes & mint--damn!!!) To the damn tasty brazilian cheese 'bread' really they are 6 small little tasty biscuits. The mangarosa salad with butter lettuce, dried cherries, fresh mango, candied walnuts, cambozola cheese w/mango & lime dressing was perfectly balanced. The seared boneless chicken w/balsamic was perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The sides of yucca chips and creamed spinach were great additions. The service was GREAT!!! I wish I got our servers name --I'd ask for him again next time I come back (and I will)he was super friendly and knowledgable! But from the hostess to the bartender, to manager...everyone seemed to go out of thier way to make sure all was going well---and this was during the north beach festival! MUST TRY
Pros: food, service, atmosphere
Cons: none for me
My girlfriend brought me to MangaRosa for my birthday as a surprise. It was a very romantic dinner, the staff was very helpful. I even got a free port with the dessert. i would recommend this to everyone!
My wife and I just got back from this restaurant. I went as a result of the ratings on CitySearch. I followed the comments by getting the Gnocchi($17), Brazilian Steak($30), Yucca Fries($4) and Cheese bread.($6) We also ordered a bottle of the Manara Amarone 2001.($72). I know that it sounds like a lot of food, but we couldn't finish the food.
We started with the cheese bread. They were round gooey cheesy bread that were quite savory. You just have to get them. They are so popular and matched perfectly with our wine.
By the way, our wine was so elegant. Every time my wife took a sip, she would comment on how awesome the wine was. Expensive... yes. But very much worth it. We ended up buying 5 bottles over the Internet when we got home.
My wife and I are somewhat spoiled in that we've been to quite a few of the finer restuarants in the area such as the French Laundry and Manresa so we have a spoiled taste palet. When we tried this food, we were floored with excitement to have found such a great find. The Gnocchi looked baked or grilled.. yet it melted in our mouths. On rare occasions, I have a dish that forces me to stop and savor the food. This Gnocchi did just that. The Brazilian steak was great because I was able to grill it on a hot plate at our table. The Yucca flour, bacon bits and pico de gallo condiments for the steak were an excellent pairing with the slices of meat. Adding the Yucca fries was a good call. I've never tasted Yucca fries as good as these. The Lemon Aioli sauce was delicate and refreshing with the Yucca fries.
In retrospest, I'm just not sure how good the meal would have been overall had it not been for the magical pairing of the Manara Amarone and the meal. They blended in a way that we just couldn't stop talking about all the way home.
We plan on going back on a regular basis. We're not rich. But this was worth it.
Pros: Quality wine list, Gnocchi, Brazilian Steak
I live in the area so I'm definitely biased to my north beach jewels, but this is one of my favorites. The atmosphere is superb and the food and drinks are definitely worth returning for. I've went a handful of times and always try something different, each time leave very satisfied. Great place for a date.
Pros: good date spot
Cons: sometimes hard to get in last minute
I've been wanting to try this place for a while and finally did. I wish I would have started coming here ages ago. The atmoshphere is great, I took my boyfriend here for his birthday. Dark and very romantic with candles and beautiful decor. The menu is creative and everything we had was very yummy. Our waiter was friendly and accomodating, they knew it was my guys birthday and brought him a sweets and desert port at the end of the meal. Definitely will be returning!
Pros: atmosphere, food, wine
Cons: cant think of any
We ordered two appetizers - crab dip and scallops, they were both EXCELLENT! For entrees, we ordered the rib eye and mushroom & pesto chicken risotto. We thought the rib eye was only average but the risotto was very good, very favorful and very yummy. We had strawberry bread pudding for dessert and it was very good. The strawberry gave a different twist to the bread pudding. The service was good but not the best. We valet the car and it was $10. Overall I will come back to this restaurant. I might try the Brazilian steak next time because a lot of people in the restaurant ordered it.
So my partner and I recently came to Manga Rosa to celebrate our anniversary. We sat outside (which I must say was fabulous) the weather was great and we had our own heater above us. The menu was a little confusing at first, until our waiter came by and explained the whole thing. We really didn't know what to try and our waiter asked us if we would like for him to surprise us..We were really excited and yes! He asked us how many coures we would like to try..We just had to go all in!!! So he brought us a bottle of Cabernet called "Parks" If you have not tried this you are missing out, he couldn't stop talking about it..After this we totally trusted him. He then brought out a appetizer of calamri (also amazing). For the salad he brought the most mouth watering salad I have ever had, it was a citrus salad with oranges and hearts of palm(which he split one salad for us, that was so sweet)..He then brought us a gnocchi to share and followed by a the brazilian Steak. For dessert he brought us a free dessert for our celebration. It was a chocolate cake and vanilla icecream a glass of champagne..Overall this place was great, we will be back. Everyone there was very attractive and sweet. I felt very welcomed and comfortable. It is a little loud, but I think it adds some character. Check it out!!
Pros: Wonderful ambience
Cons: a little loud
The front of the house staff treated us like gold the first time we went in, but on return visits, we were already like old friends. The wine list here is small and focuses on Italy and South America. Our usual server, Aaron, seems to know the list really well and recently turned us on to our new favorite wines, the Manara Amarone, which he described as the Ferrari of Italian wines, and the Monterovere, a Nebbiolo and Cab blend that is slow to open up but becomes a light and spicy-cherry-bomb. The food here is good. Most of it is simple, grilled meats and pastas, everything is delicious but not overly complicated, crowd pleasers mostly.... Except for the Gnocchi. Not chewy or doughy, their gnocchi melts in your mouth... Sit at the counter and watch the kitchen either, there's more drama back there than any reality show on television.
Pros: Delicious wines, Yummy Gnocchi, Hotty Servers
Cons: Too Loud for Grandma, Need Res. on weekends
"it's all good!" in Portuguese. My wife and I are biased, because we live in the area, but we come here all the time. We've tried most of the menu, and love it all. Steak-wise I put the Rechaud as different but on par with a good fillet as there is a ton, and you have it cooked as you like it on their grill. The shrimp risotto is one of the few risottos i have ever liked. The crab/tart appetizer is unreal, the ribs fall off the bone on sight, and the spaghetti and meatballs are how they should be. When I have ventured to the specials, I have never been disappointed. Outside dining (with heatlamps) to people watch, or inside, where they have a warm yet sophisticated vibe. And we never fail to get the Pao de quezo (divine cheese bread) and a caiparinha!
Pros: Food, warmth
Manga Rosa is a trendy Italian - Brazilian fusion restaurant, a combination you won't find very often. Remarkably it seems they stay true to the essence that makes each type of cuisine great...well seasoned and savory Brazilian steak, and superb seafood pasta dishes. The salads and appetizers are all very good - my two favorites are the cheese bread and the Ahi tuna salad. For entrees the Brazilian steak is highly recommended and well priced at $28. The steak is sliced and served rare atop a sizzling hot plate!
The one draw back is their wine menu is tiny and overpriced. Corkage is $15.00, which isn't unreasonable, and may be a good option if you intend to enjoy a good bottle of wine with your meal. The mixed drinks are excellent, especially the Mojito's, although I would recommend avoiding the flavored Mojitos in favor of the standard fare.
Pros: Food quality, Service, Ambiance
Cons: Wine list
I found Mangarosa around a year ago. I love this place! I drive Fremont to enjoy amazing food that will blow you away almost as much as their customer service. My favorite server is Val;while completely professional, she is also a very warm & gracious hostess to your visit. I also very much enjoy Paula who has always been so sweet & flexible when I have to call change my reservations or when I get lost. I love good food and the flavors and depths and the attention to detail are so out standing, i make sure I reccommend it to all my clients (i'm a hairstylist). I go out of my way to write the website down on my bussiness card for them!!! I have yet to try something there I didn't like!!!
If you want the best the city has to offer, go make your reservation NOW!!!
I picked this place for Valentines after reading reviews and seeing what their prix fixe menu was going to be. It turned out to be perfect: we got seated immediately, our waiter recommended an excellent bottle of wine (Benessere), and six courses started coming, each one as delicious as the one before. The only snag for the evening was that we inadvertently missed a course, which the waiter fixed immediately. Overall, fun time...we'll definitely go back for the regular menu.
Pros: great food, excellent service
Cons: can get loud, not cheap
I arrived with friends about 15 min. before our reservations and we were offered a seat at the bar to have drinks before we sat down, but we told them we wanted to have wine at dinner. We were then asked another 3 times if we wanted a drink before dinner. When we sat down the waiter spent more time talking about wine than the meal. One friend who wasn't drinking had to ask for water several times. The food was good, nothing stellar, but pretty well worth the cost.
I've eaten here more times than I can count and will keep coming back because there is something magical about this place. All first dates here lead to second dates, and all friends become closer ones. I love basking in its perfect, warm, rich glow. It has a great energy and manages to be cozy, chill, upscale, and unpretentious all at once. The food is melt-in-your-mouth yummy. For appetizers/sides, the Pao de Queijo (Brazilian cheese bread) is amazing, as are the yucca fries. For entrees, just about everything is great. The gnocchi is the best I've ever had, and the do-it-yourself Steak Rechaud is perfection (and fun for two to share). It's my all-purpose restaurant -- I can go there for a quiet dinner on a rainy evening, a large and loud birthday party, snuggly dates, or take visitors.
Pros: ambiance, food
Cons: parking - use valet
I'm impressed. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the food, and we went with two of his recommendations and were not dissapointed. We started off with the goat cheese and wilted spinach salad with fried polenta croutons, which was out of this world. We also had a artichoke crab dip, which was good but nothing to write home about. For the entrees we had the homemade gnocchi with mushrooms, and the "risotto with prawns and pumpkin", which was very interesting - they served shrimp in a tomato broth inside a hollowed out pumpkin, with a side of rice that I dumped into the pumpkin. It was fantastic - great taste with a little heat to give it some kick. But the gnocchi was the best I've ever had - they toast it (?), and the flavor was incredible. I'd definitely go back again and get the steak.
Pros: Food, Service, Drinks
i hate going to north beach for food since so many places are tourist driven, impossible to find parking, etc - but i find that i've been more times to this place than anywhere else in the city lately. the food is delicious (we order the grill your own steak every time) and the service is always super friendly and attentive. it's just so comfortable for some reason - you feel like you're a part of the local family. the food is consistently good and i would recommend it to anyone.
Pros: friendly staff, yummy drinks, sidewalk tables
We went here with a group of friends, and it were very disappointed. The service was clumsy, although our dishes were served quickly. No bread was served unless requested. The appetizers were by far the best part of the meal, and seemed to bode well for the rest of the meal. But the main course couldn't live up to the first round. The lamb was mostly fat and yet tasteless, the steak was so-so, and the ravioli's had no flavor at all, unless you were lucky enough to get one of the lonely pine nuts on your plate. All of this cost far more than much better food at any number of restaurants in the City. I can only recommend this spot for it's caipirinhas and if you desperately need food later in the night.
Pros: drinks, speed of service
Cons: bland food, poor service, poor value
I love just love the gnocci and can I please have a bite of some short ribs.
Pros: Food, services, great look
It's Hot....Great Ambiance and the Food is Excellent. I have eaten there on 3 different occasions and have recommended the spot to a number of people all have come back with RAVE reviews. I have also booked a number of private parties from 25 to 100 guests and they have provided OUTSTANDING SERVICE!
The grilled steak (you prepare) and is always fantastic as is the chicken. They offer unique salads that are always changing and excellent. They know what they are doing at Mangarosa !
Pros: Excellent Food, Great Service, Professionals serving
Cons: call in advance
Had dinner last here last Saturday, and had a great dining experience. From the server, to the food, everything was wonderful. Staff was friendly and accomodating, and a really nice ambiance as well. We'll definitely be back!
Pros: Food, Ambiance, Staff
We had a late nigh dinner, we had lamb chops and chocken with 12 year old balsamico with yucca fries and creamy spinach, dessert was chocolate cake and brasilian fruit caek. Pretty simple food, but excellent taste. Our waitress was very knowable and nice and recommended wines which really did complement the food. It was one of the best dinners I have ever had anywhere. A bit pricey, but worth it.
The food was ok, at best. The "entrees" come by themselves (for $16-24 each). Yes, that means if you order chicken...that is ALL you get. Just a slab o' chicken...for $16. You have to pay an extra $4 for some "sauted spinach" that tastes like it was just thrown in a pan. I could make this at home SO EASILY...and not have to pay $20+ !!!
Not a good value. Overcrowded. Leave it for the East Bay folks and tourists who come over to North Beach for the atmosphere and don't mind paying such high prices for such mediocre food.
If you must come, come for the drinks...Managroasa is one of the few places that actually makes a "Caipirinha" right.
Pros: Good Drinks
Cons: OVERPRICED, Mediocre Food, Crowded
My fiance and i tried this interesting brazilian italian restaurant in the heart of san francisco's italian cuisine district. The food Was absolutely amazing, I especially loved the balsamic chicken and the polenta soufflee. The staff was attentive and knowledgeable, from the bartender all the way down to the efficient bus boy. The desert of fried bananas was a perfect end to a perfect evening.
Pros: Staff was attractive
It's fun to try something other than Italian food in North Beach and Mangarosa turnede out to be the perfect spot for something fun and different. Food was awesome....absolutely recommend the Brazilian specialties like the cheese bread, Brazilian steak (you finish cooking it at your table) and yucca. Service was great and the ambiance was perfect. Took my sister there visiting from Texas and it was a perfect and unique experience. Live around the corner and will certainly be visiting again soon! Don't miss dessert!
Pros: cocktail menu, fun environment, friendly staff/chef
The food was enjoyable and the staff was very friendly - however, it appeared to be their first time running a restaraunt. *The servers would disappear for long periods of time - never keeping wine or water glasses full. *The servers brought out the meals, while our table was still enjoying our appetizers, and then picked up the appetizer plates and removed them from the table. *Our check was brought towards the end of dinner without asking if we would like coffee or desert - but stating to track her down if we wanted something else. *We had to go get our own desert menu. *Portion sizes were very inconsistent. As long as you can handle inconsistent, poor - but friendly service - its a good spot to try.
Pros: Friendly team, Flavorful Food
