Really good Indian food is a divine, truly. I've had a lot of middling Indian food lately and this was not that. This was really good. My BF and I started with hot naan that was soft and delicious. it came with mint and tamarind chutney. Then I had the chicken korma and he had the lamb vindaloo. We split rice, saag paneer and tamarind eggplant. Everything was served family style, so we were able to share and still had leftovers for the next day. We wrapped up the meal with amazingly good chai tea and sweet doughnut hole thingies. (I know they have a name, but I can't remember it. Just order some, they are good.)

I'll definitely be back. New Delhi is easy to find and worth the effort even if it wasn't.

I am a consultant and I keep traveling a lot. I have been to a lot of Indian restaurants even in my home town (St Louis), but this is the best Indian food I have had since I have been in the US (since last two and half years now). I am a food lover and I try out various dishes. I ordered three different dishes to test the consistency of the food preparation and I would like to give 10/10 for the all the entries prepared. I am here every week now in San Francisco and I am not disappointed at all.

I really appreciate the nan and roti are made fresh to order. This is probably the best Indian bread in the city.

Wonderfully diverse menu and fantastic service. My husband and I had Chicken Korma and a lamb dish. Both were excellent. Our kids enjoyed the chili pakoras and samosas. We all shared the Garlic Naan and Kheer (rice pudding).

Honestly, when our family can find a place that can serve dishes that are well spiced the way my husband and I like them and still serve food that our kids will eat and enjoy, it is always a five star experience. The service provided by the staff made this a trip that will definitely be repeated.
I recommend New Delhi both to those who are new to Indian food and to those who have enjoyed it before.

My #1 Indian restaurant. An absolute go-to whenever I get to SF. Love the Union Square location, the atmosphere, and a better-than-average booze selection. Most Indian places aren't known for their bars, but this one is well-stocked - and very nice to hang out in, as well.

The Chicken Tikka Masala is my litmus test for every Indian restaurant, and this one is the best. The Palak Paneer is superb, as is the Lamb Biryani and Lamb Korma.

Just go. Enjoy. It is the best.

My boyfriend and I came here for dinner. What everyone is writing about the service and the food is absolutely correct. The owner and chefs make food with love. You can actually taste the freshness and heart that goes into making this experience a positive one.

The Naan is out of this world. We also had lamb korma which is one of my favorites and this was the best place I have ever had it. Additionally, I love the mixed tandoori plate as well.

Everything was well put together.

I feel like this is a place that if you aren't familiar with Indian food and you want to try it, they will guide you as to what to try based on your palate and likes.

We will be back.

Love this place - mostly because I love Indian food and cocktails. But I needed to seat about 8 people of varying conflicting diets and not only did they take my reservation on short notice, but the staff was great about explaining the dishes and making sure the meat stuff was far from the vegan stuff and everyone had all the nan they could handle - except the gluten-free person. ;-} Great food and a great evening. I'll definitely be back again!

New Delhi gets four stars just for having ghost chili sauce. Just so you understand how excited I am/was, let me repeat: GHOST CHILI. Got it? Good.

I'm not sure that is on the menu, but when requested, they provide. Well, it was not actually requested. It was more of me asking for lamb vindaloo "Indian spicy" and the server laughing at me. So, the manager comes out and asks for the person who requested Indian spicy. I tepidly raise my hand. He told me they would give us a little bit of ghost chili sauce in a bowl, and just to dip the tines of the fork quickly in the sauce, then mix with other sauces. I think most people in my group tried the sauce, which made me proud. It was extremely spicy, and the spiciness definitely lingers, but I loved every second of it.

Onto the food - a group of 8 of us split papadum, samosas, naan, lamb vindaloo, chicken tikka masala, eggplant masala, chicken biryani, saag paneer, chicken madras, and a coconut curry dish. Papadum, samosas, and naan were all tasty. I like the lamb vindaloo, and it was very spicy, even without ghost chili sauce. Lamb was tender. I tried the chicken tikka masala, and thought the chicken was a bit dry. The curry dish was great, I wish I could remember the name. We also ordered two bottles of wine - one red, one white. I forget what the white was, but I definitely liked it. Needless to say, we did not finish all of the food.

My girlfriend and I along with some friends visited New Delhi Restaurant. Food was really excellent and the service was quick. The ambiance was good and altogether it was an enjoyable experience. We had the rogan josh - a rich spicy lamb curry - and the chicken korma, which is a much more mild, creamy dish. We had rice and nan with dinner and pakoras with chutney to start. Everything was delicious and the spices were well-balanced. Definitely be back.

We have enjoyed Indian food for many years all over the Bay area. Our meal last week was one of our best ever. The mango prawns and rogan josh were excellent and the nan is outstanding. Crisp on the outside and soft on the inside.
Don't be mislead by the reviews that complain about mandatory tips. If this was ever the policy, it seems to have been discontinued. Indeed, the service that we received was so helpful and professional that 18% would have been a bargain! Highly recommended.

I came here by myself and was treated very well - plus the food was outstanding. I travel into the city for business a lot and often eat alone. Waiters have a tendency to ignore the lone diner, but everyone here was very attentive without being over bearing, answered all my questions and kept my chai full. My tikka masala was excellent and the nan bread is possibly the best I've ever had.
Very happy, will definitely be back

Great, fast, friendly service. The food was delicious. Very relaxing setting just a couple blocks from Union Square. A young woman was very friendly and made me feel right at home. I had the garlic naan and the chicken/spinach dish. The naan was genuine and the chicken/spinach (sorry that I don't know the Indian name) was fresh, warm and tender. I travel a great deal and I genuinely enjoy a wonderful eating experience. This place is one of those places I visit again and again.

I am lucky enough to live walking distance to New Delhi and so have been able to visit often. If you haven't been here -- go immediately!! I try to have something new every time I visit and I have never been disappointed. This restaurant is great even for those who may not like traditional Indian cuisine. The samosa appetizer is melt-in-your-mouth delicious and the house fave, mango prawns, was cooked and flavored perfectly. The tandoori platter is a total must, too! I absolutely love this restaurant. Great food, great service, great ambiance -- excellent every time. My only advice, make a reservation if you want to go during busy times. Enjoy!

I've been coming here with my family for awhile and the food has stayed consistently excellent - which is no small feat when you consider how fast staff turnover can be in restaurants.

I'll always love the chicken korma and sag paneer. But lately the mango prawns and tamarind eggplant have been hitting the sweet spot. I'm not sure what it is about Indian food, because I don't normally like eggplant. If you go on a weekend, be sure to make a reservation, they can fill up fast. The bar is a nice place to hang out, but the dining room is where all the good stuff is.

My family loves Indian food. We have eaten almost all the Indian restaurants here in SF. This restaurant is No.1 in terms of quality of food, freshness of ingredients, and service. If you like Indian curry, you must go to this one. The nan bread is what really sets this place apart. There's a tandoor oven in the kitchen, so the bread comes out really hot and authentic. My parents lived in Indian and London for awhile and they were both very impressed by New Delhi. We tried everything from appetizer to dessert and loved every dish!

I would pass this place several times throughout the weeks and finally decided to do some research as I was on the hunt for some good Indian food. After reading all the positive feedback, I decided to order take-out service. The lady who took my order was very nice and informative. I ordered the chicken tikka masala, chili-cheese pakora, rogan josh and naan. I've tried naan before, but never masala or the other dishes, which were absolutely AMAZING! And for the price, we had enough food to feed 3 people and still have leftovers! I will definitely be heading back here soon!

I'm a Brit living in the US, and given my homeland's passion for Indian food I'm often disappointed by the restaurants in this otherwise fine country.
So, hold the press.... New Delhi was a surprise treat. The dishes were not only great tasting with deep complex authentic flavors, but they took a reassuringly long time to arrive and were probably the freshest Indian food I've eaten this side of the Atlantic.
Probably the best part of the experience was the *realistic* spiciness of their dishes. Too often I'm the victim of a restaurant dumbing down their dishes for westerners. The Vindaloo was great, and the Chilli Pakora's were amazing. This isn't to say that they simply replaced flavor with spice, no they found the perfect balance.
If this review sounds *too* glowing it's probably because this is the first time I've ever felt compelled to recommend a restaurant so resoundingly.
Great food, reasonable value. Casual, and satisfying.

I've been going to New Delhi Restaurant with my fiance for about three years now. It actually keeps tasting better and better if that's even possible. The Mango Prawns truly like crack. (If I ever tried crack that is.) You know when something is soooo good, it makes you lightheaded? Well, that's New Delhi. The place is packed at dinner. Get there at 6:00 if you want a seat. Weekends are just as slammed. Has progressively gotten busier. Must be the food, huh?

The service is attentive, the ambiance is like a spacious dining room, the staff is professional. large selections of vegetarian and meats are just mouth watering. We a wonderful eggplant, nice daal, amazing puffy naan bread made fresh in a tandoor oven, chicken korma, mango chutney, raita, and tamarind. Everything delicious. The garlic nan bread is awesome (which I am still thinking about now). All in all a delightful and fabulous evening. Not the last time we will be at New Delhi.

I found myself in the interesting position of having to find a restaurant that could accommodate two vegetarians, a gluten-free person, two carnivores and one person who didn't want to eat anything "weird". Um, yeah. Everyone agreed to give Indian a shot and off we trooped to New Delhi Restaurant. I live in the hood, so I come here all the time and was pretty confident they could make everyone mostly happy. There's a full bar, so if nothing else we could just drink (kidding!). I was not wrong about the staff or the kitchen. They made sure that no wheat got into anything, helped my nervous friend find something she would like (chicken korma for the win!) and the vegetarians had to stab us with their forks because the eggplant was soooo good. If you need to feed a diverse crowd, this is the place. Thanks New Delhi!

We went to New Delhi Restaurant on the strength of CitySearch and other reviews and were not disappointed. This isn't an inexpensive, let's-take-all-the-kids budget restaurant but an elegant and professionally conducted dining experience.

This food is delicious, priced well and served family style. I often enjoy the Tandoori Chicken and the Naan. I'm sure my frequent visits to the restaurant have the staff thinking of me as someone who can't cook for themselves, but there is nothing not to like about this restaurant if you like Indian food. If you are a plain meat and potatoes person, you may not like it, because spices abound with this delicious food.

Just discovered this hidden gem in the Union Square area with its extremely reasonable prices, homemade quality and a great full service bar to boot - this is hands-down the best Indian in SF and surrounding area, coming from someone who has tried nearly all local indian spots. Going to an upscale Indian place is a real treat and I'm glad they are there.

I have a lot of friends on both sides of the meat/non-meat fence. This makes eating out as a group a challenge, to say the least. However, New Delhi is the one place we all agree on. (And those who don't can just have mango martinis for dinner. Ooo, there's an idea!) The restaurant itself is lovely: tall columns, marble floors and white linen as far as you can see. The food is what keeps us coming back. They have all the Indian classics, some variations on the theme. I like the sag paneer and the chicken korma. Everyone likes the nan bread and all my veg friends Eggplant Tamarind as though it were a gift from God. So go with a group and try some of everything.

Very popular and sometimes difficult to get in, especially on weekends. A good choice for the classic Indian favorites. Kormas and Tikkas are solid and rich. Soul Food from the subcontinent. Service and atmosphere are almost exactly what you would expect from a quality western-urban indian establishment.

My husband and I enjoyed a delicious early Saturday evening dinner at New Delhi Restaurant. I ordered the Tandoori Platter, a delicious combination of tandoori meats. My husband had the Chicken Tikki Masala, honestly one of the best chicken dishes we've ever tasted. Service was attentive and we were seated immediately. I recommend New Delhi Restaurant for delicious, unique food at a reasonable price,

Without a question, New Delhi Restaurant is the place serving the best Indian food in the San Francisco area. And, the food comes with the kind of efficient service that rivals the best in the business and is light years ahead of any other Indian restaurant in this area. We have had three experiences with New Delhi - everyone of them delightful - , once for lunch, once for dinner and once for catering for our son's birthday party. Watch out though, the restaurant is extremely popular so be prepared to wait at least a little while if you walk in for dinner without a reservation. But once seated, your order is taken - and fulfilled! - in no time at all.

The first time we went here was to take my boyfriend's dad who grew up in England and who has been on the search for good Indian food ever since he moved. Since we recently moved to San Francisco I relied on the suggestions from co-workers and reviews online. The reviews were great but I didn't say anything to the parents - I wanted to see what their opinion was first. Our second visit was to take my parents for my dad's birthday. The atmosphere is lovely with tall marble pillars and lots of brass and greenery. The food is what will make us come back again, though. Everything was delicious - from the hot nan bread to the homemade pistachio ice cream for dessert.

Everything is served family style, so if you don't like to commit to one dish, this is the place for you. We had the chicken korma, rogan josh, a mango shrimp dish I forget the name of and the sag paneer. Everything was great and perfectly spiced. Basmati rice went with everything and the nan soaked up all those delicious sauces. My only complaint is that the room is very loud on a busy Friday night. While it is some of the most expensive Indian food I've ever had it it hands down the best.

We took my daughter to New Delhi Restaurant for her birthday, having never been before, and we were all very impressed! The service was great, and the food was really wonderful. The Chicken Tikka Masala was so good. Also try the Rogan Josh and of course the rasmalai for dessert. Yummy! We went at 8 PM on a Friday nite and didn't have to wait for a table. Parking was a little hectic, but what do you expect near Union Square?

I recently dined at New Delhi Restaurant and have to say that I was thoroughly impressed with everything the restaurant had to offer. As the dining room was very full, and we were unable to wait due to later engagements, my partners and I were convinced to eat at the bar by Chef Mohammed. We were so impressed with the efficiency with which everyone worked, and the quality of service they gave. All of our needs were anticipated ahead of time. We felt like we were in the dining room of a 5 star restaurant, not in the bar of a downtown Indian place. The entire staff made the atmosphere in the bar. We look forward to our next visit with everyone at New Delhi Restaurant.

My friend introduced me to this restaurant last week. I've lived in San Francisco forever, but didn't know it was in my backyard! A good bang for the buck. Portions are big and the food tastes good and is healthy at the same time. Tthey asked our spice preferences and adjusted accordingly (mild-ish for my friend, hot!hot!hot! for me). The nan was fantastic - it came out of the kitchen crispy and steaming and went well with the sauces. We had delightful and quick service. The waiters are very responsive and knowledgeable. Also had a yummy mango martini in a pretty glass. Great in every way!

New Delhi Restaurant is the one restaurant I miss the most since I left San Francisco. They make this dish that is a kind of sweet, lightly spiced curry with chicken cashews and raisins with rice. It is to die for!!!!!!!!! All of their dishes are good tho, they have been in business a long time and believe me there is a reason for it.... They know what they are doing! If you go anywhere to eat go here!!!!
