My parents live in North Carolina and I can't get enough Sweet Tea when I'm there. This led me on a quest to find authentic Sweet Tea in the Bay Area. I'm pleased to say that Memphis Minnie's lived up to it's reputation as an oasis for southern comfort food. Also, there are free refills. Can't ask for anything more.

Pros: Sweet Tea, Atmosphere, Prices

Cons: Often crowded

.

Seating is terrible and if you take a child inside and try to sit while your partner orders the staff turn into soup Nazis. Brisket is great but I won't go back, not worth the hassle.

Pros: Example: best croissants in town

Cons: What are the drawbacks?

.

Unless their food has dramatically improved, their name simply gives Memphis BBQ and southern food a bad name.

If you love barbeque, you will love Memphis Minnie's. I love the bbq sauce. The Catfish is great. The chicken and meats are finger licking good. You can't pass this one up. Moderate pricing.

Pros: smoked turkey, brisket and collard greens

Cons: kind of out of the way, in lower haight

.

In the Lower Haight, Memphis Minnie's suprises many people with delicious authentic smoked BBQ. Everything is smoked on site, and they make their own sauces. I like the atmosphere, but there isn't really a lot of seating, and I prefer to eat BBQ at home anyway, since it can be a little messy.

Pros: Food, service

Cons: sometimes crowded, a little small

Best god darn ribs and brisket I ever had! It is a little pricey, though, that is the only downside. I got the three item combo (ribs, chicken, brisket) and with a soda, it was around $20. I guess thats the price you have to pay for good bbq. All of their food has an authentic smokey flavor to it, and the meat has all been slow roasted to perfection.

I'm from Georgia. I ate at Memphis Minnie's expecting something mediocre but by god, this place was AMAZING--and trust me, we do BBQ right in the South, so that is a high compliment.

9/4/07 The two of us have distinct palates for ribs. I like dry and very smokey. My wife likes juicy, tender, sauced, and delicately smoked meats. The latter is what you find at Tony Romas. Lucilles is somewhere in between. For me the meats are 100%. Got the 3 meat sampler for $16.95. Got the pulled pork, brisket, and pork ribs along with mac cheese, cole slaw, and a corn muffin. I don't mind stripping the ribs and adding my hot sauces to the mix of pulled pork. They got the 3 sauces on the table, but there was a gem of a hot sauce by the register. They make all their sauces and this habenero bbq sauce is awesome. Oh yeah! The strong smokey meat with that sauce sent my taste buds into orbit. My wife lliked the brisket. It was tender and lean, but she passed on the rest including the cole slaw and muffin. The muffin was dry and the slaw was vinegar based. The mac cheese was hot and cheesy. I never had cucumbers in my slaw before - so it is a very unique recipe. I would pass on the slaw next time I go. In summary Minnies caters to a distinct bbq style that is not found in chains.

Was so excited to try the food here while driving by because of the reviews. So, we showed up for take-out and found a long order line. I thought the beef brisket was great, cooked so that everything just falls apart tenderly. But the St. Louis smoked pork ribs were a bit dry. We had 2 orders for almost $14 each and the 2 sides which came with it weren't as good as I'd expect. The macaroni & cheese were served in these small containers, the size of a tiny Jello take-out at cafeterias, and not very tasty. Didn't like the greens either. The french fries were interesting, flavored like BBQ potato chips. They give you 2 containers of sauce, the green tangy one I could've left behind, but the BBQ sauce was pretty good. Obviously a popular neighborhood hangout. It's a small place but you could fit 8 at one table. I wouldn't rush back here but am willing to visit again to sample some of the other items mentioned by other reviewers, including the sandwiches.

Pros: Good brisket, comfort food, very casual atmosphere.

Cons: Parking, dry ribs, funky decor

.

The decor may be a bit loud, but this is the best barbeque I?ve ever tasted, and my dad was a butcher for thirty-five years. I would recommend the pulled pork, the juicy brisket, and the mac & cheese. On Wednesdays Minnies sells pastrami sandwiches that could usher in word peace. I have hosted parties and catered with Minnies and it turned out great. Good stuff!

Pros: the pulled pork

This is the best pulled-pork BBQ you will find in the City - for all those from the South looking to tantalize their taste buds with BBQ. Their sauces are a little different than what a southern boy like me is used to, but all you have to do is find the Jack Daniel's bottle they pass around (it doesn't have liquour, but the hottest, I mean HOT, BBQ sauce in it) which will make up for what otherwise should be traditional homemade BBQ sauce. Their Brisket is also excellent, as well as the sausage and chicken. I do not care for the ribs though - sorry Memphis Minnies, when it comes to Baby Back Ribs, no one beats Tony Romas!!! But you have Tony Romas!! beat on all the other categories... Minnie's Banana pudding is out of this world also, but the only down side is that the desserts are all a bit pricey. And when you see a Big Good Ole Southern boy walk in wanting a BBQ platter, you should at least give him 2 cornbread muffins, instead of one! The only, and I mean only, downside to this restaurant is that it's small. You may have to stand in line waiting for a seat. Sometimes, you might squeeze in and sit at a table with strangers, but hey, it's worth it. A note for the gay Bear scene, the guys running the place are all WOOFY and cute, which makes the BBQ for us bears taste even better... GGrrrrrr. The servers, in general, are all very nice. I will continue eating BBQ here, especially when I can't afford the more expensive Baby Back ribs at Tony Romas. YUM.

Pros: Tasty, great quality, pulled pork BBQ, Chicken, Brisket and Sausage

Cons: Small place, hole-in-the-wall atmosphere, ribs not that good.

.

I'd heard lots of good things about this place too, but the times I've come here, I've been disappointed more often than not.

Let's start with the good news. Memphis Minnie's prepares terrific barbecue at a reasonable price. They have a good beer selection and surprisingly, a selection of sake. I had the mixed meat platter and greatly enjoyed the brisket and andouille sausage. The banana pudding dessert is a must. On a quiet evening you can have a wonderful, down home dining experience, right down to the checkered tablecloths and flying cow. Now the bad news. If they are busy you may have your food and nowhere to eat it. Seating is limited. You order on a cafeteria style line and hope that a table becomes available. We had a table and only had to suffer the hungry gazes of those waiting for us to leave. Hint to owner: Increase seating capacity!! I heartily recommend Memphis Minnies but check table availability first.

Simply the best. This institution would define barbeque in any city. The staff produces the real deal - consistently. All here is done from scratch - including the sides and the desserts - and everything is excellent. But the meats are the show-stoppers. All hand rubbed with seasonings and perfectly smoked. Zowwy!

Pros: Yes, these folks are 'Pros' - each menu item is thoughtfully prepared. Perfect BBQ!

Cons: Parking on Haight Street.

.

The bbq pork is cooked to mush with the texture of Cream of Wheat. This ain't q, it's a poor substitute. Try some real pulled pork and you'll instantly know the difference. The side dishes aren't much better. One time I had the macaroni and cheese: mediocre at best. Another time (Just to be fair, I tried the place more than once.) I made the mistake of ordering the ""southern sweet potatoes."" They must've been left over from the week before.

Being from the south and craving barbeque I was hoping this restaurant would do the trick. I liked the interior and the food looked good. I ordered the combo brisket/pork plate with a side of collards and a corn muffin. I can honestly say it was one of the worst meals I have had since I moved here. The beef and pork were extremly dry and didn't have any flavor! The sauces they offered didn't help at all. The corn muffin was dry and also had no flavor. The worst part of the meal was the collards. They tasted like they had been soaked in a pound of sugar. I tried adding a little bit of the vinegary barbeque sauce but it didn't help at all. My friend also didn't like his meal. The guy sitting next to us said he has eaten barbeque all over the country and he thought Memphis Minnie's wasn't very good! He agreed the collards were awful. I will usually give a restaurant a second chance but in this case I'll pass....

Although the name and decor tries a bit too hard, the food doesn't. Indeed, speaking from experience the barbecue ribs and pulled pork sandwich would definitively win an award at the Memphis annual BBQ cookout. Additionally, the staffs are very pleasant and seem genuinely happy to work in this joint. As for the sides, the slaw is not bad but a bit too exotic for my taste. On the other hand, the cornbread is just like Aunt Bebe used to make.

I am from South Carolina and was pretty pleased with this place. I had the two-meat combo plate - with pulled pork and beef brisket. Both meats were good enough to be eaten without sauce. I think the brisket may be better. The three sauces are ok - with my favorite being the mustard sauce. I will be back at MM - they had a brunch menu that sounded very good. Good sweet tea!!!

Maybe I was expecting too much from reading other people's reviews....
I had Memphis sweet-smoked pork ($11.95) which wasn't so good. My friends had Texas beef brisket ($11.95). It was okay, nothing special.
Both of them were recommended by the restaurant.
Well, I am willing to try something else next time since it is not expensive.

What can I say? I've traveled long and far for barbeque and have an everlasting love in San Francisco's Lower Haight hood. Accolades are justified by food professionals nationwide. If you don't believe me, go in and read them for yourself. From Sunset, to Gourmet, to CitySearch, SF Chronicle, Guardian and Weekly. But, if you're like me, you'll enjoy the newly added brunch best. There's nothing like the satisfying smokey flavor of their beef, pork or chicken hashes. Especially after a Friday night of getting your work week ya-yas out. It's all too good to explain, and I continueally work my way through the menu without tiring. Go in and enjoy the Memphis Minnies experience for yourself, many discriminating palates have, and agree--Memphis Minnie's is the Best Q in the West.

Having moved from Kansas City, we went to this restaurant due to reviews on this website. The St. Louis ribs were charred. The sauces were from Texas and Carolinas (and this is ""Memphis"" Minnies). The slaw, beans, sweet potatoes - all left a lot to be desired. Is this really the best barbeque that the city has to offer?

I had been searching for good Memphis style BBQ since Hog Heaven on Stanyan St. closed. I've tried other places but barbecue or ""Que"" just does not automatically equal ""burnt."" [I could go on here about heartburn, carcinogens, etc, but suffice it to say I can burn my own ribs at home, thank you very much.] I fell in love instantly with the red beans and rice and the two-way with brisket and pork ribs. The cornmeal muffins are worth taking a few home for breakfast. The sake sampler was fun to try and sake seems to complement the Que perfectly, although cold beer does just fine, too. No room for desserts, but the sweet potatoe pie was mighty temptin', mighty temptin. Fun decor, even if it looks cheap to snobs [they can do take-out if they don't like it]. Staff friendly and helpful and patient.

Memphis Minnies BBQ is a great place to go if you are in the mood to stuff your face and spend the rest of the night recovering. They have great sandwiches and ribs. They have Frito pie and fried grit sticks, what more could you ask for? They also have a weekend brunch that is to die for. I would definitely say make the trip to lower Haight and check this one out, you won't regret it.

Minnie's is a great place if you are craving slow-smoked, southern BBQ. Their brisket is the tastiest in town; be sure to get the platter so you can pick 3 of their great side dishes. I recommend the beans, corn bread, and mac n' cheese. For dessert, their pecan pie and banana pudding are as good as any place in town.

Memphis Minnies is a welcome addition to San Francisco, a city definitely lacking in the barbeque department. Although relatively close to Brother in Law's Barbeque, often touted as the best in town, I find that reputation undeserved, and Memphis Minnie's offers comparable, if not better, food for a definitely less expensive price. An interesting addition to Memphis Minnie's is their selection of sake. You may not be used to this combination, but give it a try. It is very very good.

Memphis BBQ done right! This is a no pretense BBQ place with a crew that appears to enjoy what they are creating. The hollowed-out bun is first rate and piled with quality meat. Saucing is left to the cusotmer at the table with four sauces in pour top bottles waiting. I wish the sauces had a bit more punch! Their flavor is good, but by most standards, there is not enough ""heat"". Self-serve fountain soft drinks with no apparent restraints on refills. Save some room for the very good banana pudding with vanilla wafers.

In the lower Haight, Memphis Minnies captures the best of BBQ from the south! The food is excellent: briskey was moist and oh so tender, but not greasy or fatty. The BBQ sauces themselves are quite authentic, not sweet like out of a bottle. Services is fast, atmosphere is fun, and prices very fair for what you get. One of the best meals I've had in SF.

Pros: Excellent BBQ, Fast, Fairly Price

.

I will become a regular here as the food is delicious. This place doesn't use a lot of sauce but would rather have people enjoy the natural flavor of the meat and the pork and beef are among the most tender I have ever had.

Grab a beer afterwards next door at Mad Dog in the fog, the best British pub in SF.

Sometimes nothing else will do. When you have the taste for BBQ you could do a lot worse than go to Memphis Minnies. Yum!

I have tried other BBQ joints all over the USA, and this is one of the best I've ever had. Beef brisket is smoky and packed with flavor...I found the pork a bit dry, but pouring on the sauces available on each table fixed that nicely. Haven't tried the ribs yet. Chicken wings are the best I've ever had in my life. AMAZING. Also, if they have the biscuits with sausage gravy on the menu, get them!

We have been dying to try this place for a couple of years now - and we finally made it out there this weekend. We got there around 8pm and there were still a couple of tables available so that was nice. Based on previous posts, we ordered the pork ribs and beef brisket and added a side order of fries. The red beans were nice but the mac-n-cheese was mushy and soggy. The ribs were flavorful but not tender by a long shot. The brisket, which is supposedly smoked for 18 hours, did not taste like it at all. And it was served cold. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. I am not a bbq expert, but this was not what I expected at all. Maybe it was an off night?

For all the Bar-b-que places in the bay area, none of them even come close to Memphis Minnie's. All of the other places follow the same old tired method; get any old piece of meat, leave on all the fat, burn into submission, and lastly pour a truckload of sauce over it to cover the taste. Not at Minnie's, you get a large helping of meat cooked perfectly with excellent sides made right there, not scooped out of a costco container.
Anyone who thinks that KC's, Everett & Jones, Nate's or Brothers is in the league of Memphis Minnies is out of their mind.

Pros: pulled pork, sweet tea, mustard sauce

I went with a friend and wasn't in the mood for barbecue so I just got a few sides. So I can't speak for the meat, but every side was very disapointing. The mac and cheese was dry and bland, and the greens were so vinegary I couldn't eat them. And the sweet tea, which I was so excited about being able to get, being from the south, was extremely disapointing. It tasted like they sweetened it with honey- ugh!

Stopped by after all the glowing reviews, there's limited seating in this colorful little joint so I grabbed takeout. Had the combo platter with beef brisket, pork ribs, greens and macncheese. Best part of the meal was the tender, fatty brisket, it fell apart under a fork. Ribs were decent but a bit charred, greens tangy and macncheese a bit overcooked. Overall a good meal, but the sauce needs some work. Homemade banana pudding was a great way to finish off the meal. Overall, I liked the spot but still have to put the Back Forty on top for barbecue

Pros: Reasonable prices, Great Brisket

they have simply great BBQ. Get the brisket & the fried peach pies. They are both to die for.

If you don't go, you are missing out.

After multiple visits, I am now certain I've had the best beef brisket in the Bay Area. MM is hit and miss in terms of moist vs dry. I've repeatedly enjoyed great brisket in Texas and found local brisket elsewhere bland, but when MM's brisket is served moist, it is simply divine, even luscious. Rarely, it's served dry. Pork spareribs were smokey, tender, but not falling off the bone like some mistakenly think is right. Pulled pork was smokey, flakey, but often too dry. Served without sauce is important, smoked meats shouldn't be drenched. Once I was served beef ribs when I clearly ordered pork ribs (said so on receipt), but they're good too. Mean greens were too sweet and vinegar-y, leaving them difficult to swallow. Meat is the main event and I'm usually very impressed!

Pros: Brisket when moist, Served without sauce, real oak wood smoke

Cons: modest portions, mean greens too sour, difficult parking

The best BBQ in SF is hands down. Bob smokes his briskets 18 hours! The ribs are done to perfection. They are tender and have a wonderful Smokey flavor to them. Bob makes four types of sauces a vinegar based, mustard based, and two types of red sauces a mild and a screaming hot sauce, but Bob insists that you taste the meat prior to smothering it in sauce. Bob says I don't spend 18 hours smokin meat to have it buried in sauce.

I was in the mood for some BBQ'd ribs one day and headed to Brother-In-Laws to find that they had to close for an hour to make some more sauce. Darn! I decided to head over to Memphis Minnie's to try it out. The staff there is awesom, very friendly and courteous. The place itself is pretty cool. The food, well, was not bad. The ribs were out of this world.....without the sauce. Have to say, I wasn't too crazy about the sauces. They were a bit to ""foo-foo"" for me. The sides, as well, were okay at best....I was looking forward to some good collard greens, then was disappointed ny the way-too-tangy side I got with my meal. I think I'll stick to Brother-In-Laws.

Bay Area is full of good southern style BBQ, but MM's takes the cake. Best brisket in town, great sauces and great sides.

If you are craving delicious bbq at a good price, I would not recommend Memphis Minnie's. It's definitely a cute place, but the food was disappointing and too expensive for the small portions they serve.

The brisket was dry, very dry, and a third of the meat was the consistancy of beef jerky. The ribs were probably great before they were cooked to death. When we brought it to the staff's attention, they said it was always served this way.

Minnie's menu is hit and miss. Some ribs are good, others don't make the grade. Turkey was okay, but bbq brisket is the star. What makes it stand out is the many hours it's smoked. You must BEG them for lean, or you'll end up with a pile of fat. Get lean & you're in business. The best deal is to order a pound and make your own sandwiches. I don't care for the honey mustard but the other bbq sauce is excellent. Wasn't impressed with any of the sides with one exception. They have a sweet slaw that is vinegar based and doesn't use mayo, so all the fat calories can be spent on the meat. A fine compliment to the excellent brisket. You might want to skip the banana pudding dessert, made with vanilla wafers; sure looked good, but was sweeter than toothpaste...
