I travel a lot on business, and stay at 4 and 5 star hotels, most of which have a spa.. I work hard, and being a female, usually manage to treat myself to a spa treatment at the hotel I am staying at.

About 10 days ago was at the San Jose Fairmont, and walked into the spa reception area, which was dead, except for one young receptionist staring down at her computer.

I waited a few minutes, and finally she looked up. I explained that I was interested in either a facial or a massage either that day or the next day, and wanted to look around the spa first.

She replied you can NOT just look around the spa for free. If you are a hotel guest, you can pay, I think it was $30.00 and come in and use the shower, sauna, and look around.

I replied, I get spa treatments at fine hotels all over the country, and I have never had a spa tell me, that I cannot look around first. She just looked at me.

Then I asked can you tell me the experience of the person who would be giving me a massage. Because nice hotels charge a lot more then other places in a city, and they don't always get experienced people.
She did not know, just said, all our staff is qualified, end of story.

I just looked at her, and I said, you are not a very good spokes person for your company. And I left. She never gave me times for appointments or anything. Many people in that hotel are new hires, she was not nasty, she just had no enthusiasm for the job.

I had just checked out of the Grand Hyatt Kauai, a few days before, which has a lovely spa and the attitude of the receptionist there, was night and day different, when I arrived and asked her to look around the spa before I booked an appointment. Not only did she have some one show me around, she invited me to enjoy the sauna and the lap pool for the rest of the day. I had just checked into the hotel that afternoon.

we got a groupon for pagoda and decided to try it on a thursday night. there was a guy playing the piano and singing at the bar area which was separate from the dinning area. You can easily hear him though so it was a pleasant sound and not overbearing.

the ambiance of the restaurant was nice and good for fine dinning. not too fine thought that you feel uncomfortable and have to dress up.

the staff was very nice and courteous and obviously chinese. we ordered the honey walnut prawns which we always order at every chinese restaurant to determine the quality of food. First off, the food came fast and all together :) i like that... i hate the pretentiousness of things coming in one after the other. so about the prawns, they were fresh and had a slight crispiness about the batter... soooo good... the walnuts were cut in smaller pieces and very crunchy and tasty. yummy. best honey walnyt prawns that we have every tasted.

next one that we ordered were prawns and scallop with brocolli. the brocollis were so fresh and tasty. i would normally not finish the brocolli when i order these kinds of food but for the first time, every piece was as eventful as the first one... the scallops and prawns was so fresh and nicely cooked. not chewy at all.

for desert we had the mango ginger creme brulee... oh la la yummy!!! melt in your mouth.

we are for sure coming back to this restaurant. every month if possible. it is sad there is not many people who frequent eating at places like these that look pricey because they are at the hotel... but they are definitely one you dont want to miss, esp if your in downtown san jose

This hotel has the Fairmont name but it needs to be upgraded. Old and starting to look it. They need to invest in updating banquet rooms and event space. Disappointing food quality the last large event we held at this hotel. Not up to Fairmont standards. Rooms seemed to be decent.

I'll give the Tova Yaron Day Spa & Salon a D grade. I'm hardly a newbie when it comes to facials and the one I received there was something my boyfriend could have done for me. The facialist was clearly inexperienced - her 'massage' was a continuous circle motion of her hands on my cheeks. She didn't do any extractions and left some goop on my temple and under my jawline. Don't waste your money.

The Fairmont is a beautiful hotel in Downtown San Jose right in the center. They have great large event rooms for banquets and dances that work well for large groups.

My son goes to San Jose University and when we come up to visit this is where we stay. The beds are so cozy and the staff is always helpful and friendly. They've added on a new wing to the hotel that has amazing suites. Just a few blocks away from the college along a great central area with shops, restaurants, a rock climbing gym, and a theater. Centrally located. The Grille on the Alley is a great steakhouse within the Hotel. Our favorite!
