STILL THE BEST ICE CREAM SPOT AROUND. ALL HANDMADE ON SITE. LIKE AN OLD TIME FOUNTAIN. I'VE BEEN GOING THERE FOR YEARS AND THE SAME GUY IS ALWAYS AT THE COUNTER. (owners son?) AND HE IS ALWAYS GRUMPY. WHY? HE SHOULD BE HAPPY TO HELP HIS CUSTOMERS. GOOD PLACE THOUGH.

So, how to describe Fosselman's Ice Cream Co. than good, blissful, or heavenly? "Diggity-dank-jizzmania," is a term my friend E.J. used when trying their exotic lychee flavor. Hmm, yes! Fosselman's ice cream is diggity-dank-jizzmania after all!

Ice cream is difficult to describe because the differences between brands can be subtle. Additionally, people rarely have bad experiences, although once I had some random specialty ice cream from Rite Aid that compared to toothpaste. I suspect they combined all the lingering leftovers into a blend of crap-- but I digress. Certainly there is no toothpaste flavor among their 48+ choices at Fosselman's, as their creamy handmade ice cream has been a local favorite since 1919.

Fosselman's is an old-fashioned ice cream parlor with a charming interior old-school decor that has a wide variety of special and seasonal flavors. It's a place where people can have old-fashioned fun merely sitting around with the sounds of chatter and laughter buzzing around. Smiles can be seen from every table and even from those eagerly waiting for the chance to order the tasteful substance that seems to bring everyone together. And by everyone, I mean everyone.

Fossleman's brings together a diverse customer base; not only ethnically diverse, but also diverse in age. From children that have the ice-cream parlor going experience as the high points of their young life, to several grown working men happily loitering indoors with cone and ice cream in hand at the end of a busy week. Fosselman's has a special characteristic that unites generations together. Or it could just be the ice cream that does the trick.

This has to the busiest ice cream shop on a Friday night since the queue was out nearly out the door. By the time it was my turn to order, I could not decide because of the large selection of choices such as Taro, Horchata, Green Tea, Macapuno, Spumoni, and many, many other uncommon flavors. The server was uncertain the most popular item after trying to probe him with questions, so after trying several samples, I decided on single scoop of Fresh Peach ice cream with a sugar cone which happens to be one of the unique seasonal flavors.

The portions were quite generous for $2.50. It was light, creamy, and of course peachy! It was not overwhelming sweet with a subtle tart aftertaste. It had a very smooth texture that was not fluffy or thick. The Fresh Peach, like most of the other flavors at Fosselman's, does not leave thick phlegm in the back of your throat as it somehow retains the right balance. One scoop of ice cream and the company of old friends were perfect for a warm summer night. It was, should I say, diggity-dank-jizzmania?

Fosselman's has other options such as sundaes, floats, sherbets, sorbets, frozen yogurt, and even ice cream cakes! I've heard good things about them all, and some day I will give them a try. If one wants to avoid the terrors of their small parking lot, their homemade ice cream in pints or gallon tubs to enjoy in the comfort of home, which is actually what my sister does sometimes.

Fosselmans ice cream tastes so FRESH! It is made right on the premises, with lots of TLC. My favorite flavor is the mango. My BFF loves the chocolate dipped strawberrey. Lots of other creative flavors. Y U M !!

I watched Huell Howser and heard other glowing reviews of this place, (I thought worth making the trek from Glendale) but was thoroughly disappointed. I tried my regular favorite flavor - CHOCOLATE CHIP - and found Fossleman's absolutely tasteless. I struggled to taste any vanilla. I hoped for a thick and rich texture, but this was no better than a supermarket brand.

Maybe its other flavors are better, but as far as I'm concerned, they blew it. I will not be going back. I'll stick to Cold Stone or Baskin Robbins.

This family run business makes the best ice cream. The ice cream is so creamy and yummy. You will find flavors as interesting as pumpkin, taro and lemon custard. The prices are very reasonable.

I got the french vanilla on a whim and it was the best french vanilla ice cream I have ever had. No kidding. It somehow tasted a little like root beer! I might be crazy- but it's worth tasting to find out for yourself anyway. So good!!

A few of my friends and I used to go to Fosselman's at least once a week. One of us, however, had a gift certificate for a half gallon of ice cream, so we decided to get a few of us together to go. We bought the ice cream and asked for some bowls. The OWNER of this establishment gave us a hard time about asking for free bowls, but we paid for the bowls and I even tipped him $0.40 or so. We then sat down to start eating ice cream, and in front of about 15 other people, he started yelling at us telling us that we couldn't eat in the store. The case evidently said "To go" somewhere, and why would he EVER let us buy a gallon and eat in his store. He can't charge 2.30 for an ice cream cone if everyone buys gallons.

During our usual weekly trips, we ALWAYS pay for the single scoop cones. We just thought we could use the gift certificate to enjoy some ice cream at our favorite ice cream place. I just didn't ever think I would be so humiliated in public for doing such a thing.

Pros: good ice cream

Cons: horrible customer service

.

This place is a family owned ice cream parlor that brings the good ole times back to life. It's small but comfortable and customer service is awesome. You can look at the historical pictures of the company on the walls and read about various articles. Ice cream is made inside the building and tastes GREAT! They offer tubs of any flavor that they sell.

Pros: Home made ice cream, booth seating, relaxed and homely atmosphere

Cons: small parking lot, too many great choices to choose from

.

Last time I went I had banana praline and classic strawberry. Both were authentically flavored without too much sickly sweet sugar and rich and creamy without that Ben and Jerry's comatose after-effect. The lines can be long, but the fun array of candies and topping available at the counter are well worth it. Skip the cold stone, this place is an institution for a reason.

If you're not familiar with this place, I highly suggest you check it out. They still make make ice cream there the old fashioned way. Not much has changed since they opened back in 1919 and have stayed true to their recipes. Friendly service and very reasonable prices. Best of all, great ice cream that rivals Haagen Daz!!

This family-owned, old-fashioned ice cream shop is our favorite (with Mashti Malone's running a close second). Fosselman's has a wonderful selection of flavors, consisting of the old standbys (vanilla, strawberry) and the unique (taro, ube, lychee). For me especially, it wouldn't be summer without a once-a-week pilgrimage to get a scoop of the seasonal peach ice cream. Though it can get busy on Friday and Saturday evenings, the line moves fairly quickly and service is pretty efficient. Unfortunately, given the high butterfat content (which makes the ice cream sooo divine), Fosselman's ice cream would give the most committed calorie-counter pause. It really should be served with a side of a three-mile run or a rigorous yoga session.

PROS: Lots of flavors, late hours, efficient service
CONS:

I add my enthusiastic support to the other reviews here, but another distinguishing aspect of Fosselman's is it's acknowledgement of being located in a very Asian neighborhood. And, to that end they have flavors like red bean (although I grew up w/ it, I'm not wild about it in ice cream), lychee (tasty), green tea (good, too) and taro (odd, but my favorite)! Oh, and I love the dark chocolate and peppermint, too.

I like they ice cream b/c is very creamy & smooth, but a bit too sweet for my taste. The sherbet is great, but also a bit too sweet for me. Then again, where can I find a cold treat that is tasty but ultra-light on the sugar. Now that is a challenge!

Fosselmans has the best ice cream I've had. It was my first time there and it was really good. The prices are a little high compared to store bought but the quality of the ice cream makes up for it.

I've been a loyal fosselman's goer for 14 years. I could honestly say that I am literally addicted to their ice cream.(no wonder I'm so broke! heehee) I love this place, it makes me so warm and homey. I don't know about everyone else, but everytime I stepped into fossleman's, it felt like steppin' into an other heavenly place.... This is my soft place to fall. Oh yes, my favorite ice cream flavors are: English Toffee, Rum Raisin,Cafe Vanilla, and boysenberry sorbet. So darn....Delicious! Thank you Fosselman's.

Old Fashioned Soda Fountain. Best Ice Cream around. Several flavors, found no where else, to choose from. Shakes, malts, sundaes, banana splits, brownie sundaes, smoothies, floats and ice cream sodas. Always packed but never a long wait.

They've been in business for 80+years and handed down from generations of expertise....ice cream made the old fashion way or the only way, so to speak!! I'm nowhere near the history but I know good ice cream when I taste them (and I ain't over weight either) This is indeed the best ice cream (please don't even bring those "Haagen Daz", or incompetent corporate "supermarket" brand up)!!!
Always stack and load "2" half gallons (Coconut Pineapple, English Toffee or Mango in my freezer).

Fosselman's ice cream is so well-made. I think the flavors are a bit delicate compared to those in other shops, so you'd do better to have one flavor at a time. If you decide to get a sundae or banana split, you'll find that even the toppings are delicious! Stepping into Fosselman's is like stepping back in time. Take the kids.

The flavors are fantastic, the portions are generous, the service friendly and the atmosphere very homey. Any weekday or evening this place is brimming with customers. I stop here every time I have my car tuned up. The quality of the ice cream is excellent, and I'm a sucker for blueberry. I don't know of anyone else who carries this flavor. If you're looking for an exotic flavor, and made the right way, look no further. Prices here are a bit better per scoop than the other ice cream places.

My husband and I have been going to Fosselman's since we were in high school (20 years) and we just can't get enough. Nothing compares to the wonderful flavors they offer. They always have a flavor of the month. My son loves the black licorice (October) and I love the pumpkin and we all love their good old fashioned hot fudge sundaes. They don't skimp on the servings either! They also carry an assortment of gold old- fashioned candy. The word has definitely gone out because it always so busy.

For the BEST, you have to travel to Bert&Rocky's or Dr. Bob's (both in Upland), but Fosselman's hits the spot closer to L.A.

My favorite is the hawaiian-white coconutty MACAPUNO, but chocolate diehards will want to try the DARK CHOCOLATE, which tastes like Cocoa in a can. Banana Nut is a winner, kids will like the clown cones, and the cakes are great.
Note: The take-home half gallons have more air and are not as creamy and rich as the scoops in the shop. But they still hit the spot!

Fosselmans has a store in Alhambra, and is sold in some other places. Double Rainbow has 2 stores; one in Van Nuys, and one on Melrose in Hollywood. I would rate Double Rainbow slightly higher, and you can get it at Trader Joes..

Coldstone Creamery, Citysearch's higest rated ice cream place is pure crap and far to trandy with tgheir "mix-ins" compared to either.

Aromi cafe in Van Nuys is just accross the street from the coldstone creamery loaction in Van Nuys, and their gelato and sorbetto (the don't have ice cream, but gelato is close) blows away Coldstone Creamery

How wonderful it is to still have a family owned business that has been enjoyed by so many generations and that has such outstanding service and ice cream! Their ice cream cakes are the best also. Truly an old-fashioned ice cream parlor.

We also have enjoyed their ice cream at some of the local restaurants and those are the only restaurants where we would order ice cream.

Their capuccino ice cream is the best!

Enjoy with friends or by yourself -- it is habit-forming!

unlike any of the chains, in fact, unlike most of the ice cream parlors in town, Fosselman's makes their own ice cream and it is great.

Try Toasted Almond or Cappucino. Their non-fat frozen yogurt tastes unbelievably rich. Seasonally, they have flavors like Fresh Peach, Pumpkin, Licorice and Date.
