5 Stars: 5 Stars for Dr Patrick M Sutton Md as my OB for #1 baby (by Sacha B.)

I just delivered my first baby with Dr Sutton and I have come back here to write my review as I referred to this page when making my decision on which OB/GYN to go to. [I have HMO insurance]. He has a very personable and kind manner, very knowledgeable, very professional and always was at pains to make sure I was at ease and that everything was going well with the pregnancy, not just physically. I had a few complications at the start of my pregnancy and his manner was very sympathetic and caring; he even arranged to get me into a full Saturday morning surgery so I could have a ultrasound to see how the baby was. At the end of my pregnancy I had to have an induction and he was very understanding and flexible with that too - I had the induction on a weekend and apparently not many OB/GYNs in the Pasadena / Glendale area do, which also meant that Verdugo Hills Hospital labor ward was empty so I had the undivided attention of the midwives too.

Some people might find his propensity to talk at a rapid rate perhaps a little quirky, as if he might be trying to move you along, but I don't think this is the case. He just articulates fast. If you want a reliable, experienced and professional doctor who really does take the time to answer your questions (however silly they might seem) I would definitely recommend Dr Sutton to readers and I will continue to use him. I would also add that the nurses and the reception staff are all really helpful and nice too - which for me is another really important factor when choosing a practice to go with.

4 Stars: Dr Sutton, good advice with options (by DH w.)

MY wife was told to have an abdominal ultrasound due to her "potential" family history (not sure possible ovarian, pancreatic cancer - not certain), however she had no symptoms of any gyn. problems. She had the ultrasound done. Results were sent to another OB/GYN who looked at the ultrasound results.Cyst on ovary, fibroid in the uterus. The other doctor recommended an abdominal Hysterectomy.
My wife made an appointment with Dr. Sutton for a second opinion. Boy are we glad we did. Dr. Sutton looked at the same ultrasound results and said "that is not what I would recommend at all". He pointed out how common fibroids are and that cysts are not always cancerous, he recommended monitoring the cyst with another ultrasound to see if it grew, stayed the same size, or reduced in size. He also recommended if a surgical procedure was necessary or if she felt the need to have the ovary removed for fear of a past history, he could perform that with laproscopic procedures, with much faster recovery times and less complication prone than an abdominal Hyst. He gave her many options and perspectives on the situation. Later she had another ultrasound performed as recommended and low and behold, the cyst is smaller than it was prior. He recommends a continued monitoring approach.

Needless to say, if my wife did not get a second opinion, she would have been looking at a needless hysterectomy and months of recovery for basically a benign cyst, and a common fibroid that she had no symptoms as an indication.
Dr. Sutton was very respectful, informational (unlike the other doctor that merely said "you need to have a hysterectomy") and his methodology seemed very medically appropriate for her situation.
Keep in mind that the "other" doctor was given high marks as well by other ladies that used him. However, they gave him high marks on his surgical and Obstetrics work, not on his prognosis and approach to hysterectomy. How many women have had needless hysterectomies performed????

Always get a second opinion, especially when someone suggests surgical procedures.

I would recommend Dr. Sutton to others facing this serious situation.

P.S
Is it possible in this day and age to have an OB/GYN with 100's of patients over the years whom has not likely had litigation at some point with someone?

4 Stars: Sutton Patrick M Md is wonderful albeit quirky (by Julia G.)

Dr. Sutton was recommended to me by a colleague when we first moved to Pasadena 2 years ago from the Bay Area. I was uncomfortable at first with having a male ob/gyn, but he was really professional, gentle, and comforting that soon it became a non-issue. While his sense of humor is quirky, he really took the time to comfort me when things got scary and to asnwer any question I might have had. He also let me roller blade until the day I delivered ;) Oh, and one of the nurses is his wife...

5 Stars: Since 1989 (by Kathryn L.)

Dr. Sutton delivered my daughter in 1989 and my son in 1992. Both kids were premature births and both pregnancies were difficult. He has always been the height of professionalism and skill and there is no one else I would go to but Dr. Sutton. He has kind of a quirky personality and I think some women are a little put off by his frankness and honesty (as in asking how sex is to determine whether or not you may have a physical problem), but I find his honestly and frankness refreshing and compassionate. I have absolutely no problem being honest with my doctor about my body and trust him completely. Dr. Sutton has been my doctor for 20 years and I adore him.

1 Stars: Not good for informed mothers (by D P.)

If you want to eat, drink, and walk during labor without an IV, epidural anesthesia, pitocin (he loves to speed things up with that drug) or surgical procedures such as an episiotomy or a cesarean (he performs lots of those), Dr. Sutton is not a good choice.

He is paternalistic at best, but he has turned on me and I understand others when questioned or challenged.

It is true that Dr Sutton likes pregnant women. In response to the woman who was unsure about examinations conducted without a lap sheet, it is not the norm by any means. Breast examinations at each prenatal visit are also not considered the norm, nor are they necessary.

As far as the allegations are concerned, they were brought before the Division of Medical Quality Medical Board of California for which he recieved disciplinary action. For those interested in the facts, documents are available as a matter of public record.

1 Stars: I trust him with my life and my children's lives. (by Jami H.)

Dr Sutton made my pregnancy as easy as possible. It was a little awkward at first, going to a male ob/gyn, but he's very sensitive about privacy and very down to earth. His common-sense advice and little jokes ("lets take a look at your inner child") always made me smile. He is also a marvelous, fantastic, superior surgeon. He delivered my daughter via emergency c-section and I have a very thin scar and absolutely no numbness. Despite the numerous (and probably disgusting) conditions he's seen a woman's vagina in, he still retains a radiating respect for the beauty of the female body. He's truly a gentleman.

He does talk fast, and sometimes presents what he believes is best without delving into all other options. I don't mind, because I'm the sort of person who does my own research--not the sort that needs everything spelled out and spoon fed to me. I always ask a million questions and he has always answered all of them, even the stupid ones, with tenderness, intelligence and savvy.

To the people who are concerned about dark intent, criminal allegations or anything unsavory, I can offer this: I don't know what exactly he was accused of or when, and frankly, I don't care. He has always been a gentleman. Even my husband, who is by nature a very jealous, possessive, and suspicious person (from living in an abusive home for most of his childhood) likes this doctor. It doesn't matter if my hubby is with me for an appointment or if I'm alone, we both have complete confidence in Dr Sutton's professional manor, and overflowing gratitude for his generosity of spirit.

5 Stars: The Best OB and Staff (by Virginia B.)

Dr Sutton delivered my daughter in March of Last Year and he by far is awesome. He was personable and I find it very hard to believe that anyone would have any allegations. I think that person has deeper issues. My preganancy was a High Risk Pregnancy and he was always very attentive and professional. I recommend him to anyone who is looking for an awesome Dr.

5 Stars: Fantastic Doctor & Staff!!!! (by Barbara M.)

Dr. Sutton has been my gyn doc for 15 years or more. He has never been anything but respectful, kind, caring and thoughtful - oh, and highly professional, too! Some of these woman need to get over themselves and their small little lives to think that he would want to jeopardize his medical license, career, family and standing in both the Pasadena community at large and the medical community to try to sexually harass or say or do something unethical or inappropriate! If he were cold, clinical and unkind, I would be seeing another doctor!

Dr. Sutton was my ob/gyn and delivered my son in 1997. I still go to him only for yearly checkups and I don't live in the Pasadena areay anymore....he is the only doctor I will go to for my female check-ups. Very personable, professional, and a caring atitude for his patients.

3 Stars: Having Mixed Feelings..... (by rita d.)

I am new to this Dr. My first impression left me uncertain. When I went in his office initially, I felt that he skimmed over things and recommended the easiest route. I had just had to have an emerency transfusion, which i wasnt expecting, and a little afraid about what was going on. He didnt present me with any possible options, and maybe i should have been asking questions about that myself, but, i was scared about what was possibly happening. Cant say that then, he made a favorable impression. Seemed blase about the whole thing. Also, i felt rushed, unimformed. First 2 exams where unusual in that all the dr.s I have been to ALWAYS used a lap sheet. Both male and female drs. Dont know why he didnt. Not real upset, but think its very wierd. Should ask the paicent if they would like one. Last time he did. Was going to ask the nurse about the little quirk. Also, after the op., he didnt tell me about what to expect, so i wasnt prepared, and when i saw he i told him and gave him my viewpoint and i will say that he did listen well and gave me more time than most drs. do. But, initiallly, I didnt feel that he gave me as much time or Inforomation as he should have and i didnt like it. thought about asking for anotherr dr. some of the postings have unsettled me... wish i would have found them sooner, dont know what to think now. and just for the record, I'd like to see this sense of humor some mentioned, he is very serious with me and i thought about cracking some jokes just to see how he would react.

5 Stars: Wonderful dr (by Jessica W.)

I have been reading these things and am acting on someone telling me about the allegations.
When you have delivered 2K children there is bound to be someone who wants to ruin you or is uncomfortable in their own skin and takes it too far, probably to sue.
If we are all saying he says nice things like "You look nice today" then it is obviously standard and not flirting. No offense but I doubt he sees nothing but supermodels. It is probably the people that never hear these things that feel unconfortable with this.
He is the only doctor I have had that calls me personally when I have a question without putting a nurse on it.
He talks fast but I like that because I don't want to spend all day in the dr's office. I never wait long in the room which is great and he has conselled me many times on personal matters he thought effected my health. I have never had that before either.
He found a condition I had that 4 others dr's told me was my imagination!!!
LOVE HIM!!!

5 Stars: Dr. Sutton is awesome. (by Jessica S.)

I was referred to Dr. Sutton by a friend. I had been having a difficult pregnancy with a lot of pre-term labor. I had already gone to two different OBGYN's and was very unsatisfied with their treatment and staff. I had called a number of different OB's but since I was already in my 8th month none of them wanted to take me. Thankfully Dr. Sutton did. He was very attentive, and caring. He heard all of my concerns and took very good care of me. I highly recomend him to any one looking for a good doctor. He also comes with a great office staff.

5 Stars: Excellent Care (by michele b.)

Dr. Sutton is an extremely bright, articulate, caring person who treats his patients with the utmost thoughtfulness and diligence. Dr. Sutton pays attention to details and proceeds with due care in all that he does. He takes the time to get to know is clients personally. He goes above and beyond the call of duty in the time that he spends conversing with patients in the office after the exam, inviting phone calls, returning phone calls and supporting not just the physical, but the emotional well being of those he sees. I have been well satisfied and impressed with the care I have received for many years.

It is unfortunate that in our culture of blame and excessive litigation good people are defamed. It is important for all of us to remember that nothing, not even the practice of medical science, is perfect and there is no guarantee.

Dr. Sutton's extensive record of stellar service speaks for itself.

5 Stars: Great doctor with great bedside manner (by Stacey C.)

I recently suffered a miscarriage at 5 months and Dr. Sutton was not only great before the loss, but he was a wonderful person to talk to after my loss. He made sure to reinforce to me that it was not my fault and that he was there no matter what I needed. He gave me the option to call him on his pager to speak to him directly with any questions or concerns I had, rather than having to go through his front desk.

I am currently having all sorts of tests done to try to determine if there was some problem that caused the miscarriage. I have an HMO and have never felt that I was not being tested for something due to this fact. Prior to the day I lost my son there had been no clue that anything was wrong even though I had many tests done just to check my health at the beginning of my pregnancy.

I had been with my last OB for over 10 years and was a little hesitant about changing. This was also my first time having a male OB. Dr. Sutton always made me feel comfortable and I loved his jokes. I plan to try again for another baby and I will be sticking with Dr. Sutton.
