I pass by Salinas, CA, frequently and always stop at El Charrito Market at 122 West Market Street rather than stop for bland brand name fast food. The chile verde is to die for and the remainder of menu is also fantastic. People are friendly. I am anglo but have tried Mexican food all over the southwest and this place is the "real deal". I recommend the chile verde burritos but try the breakfast burritos too. Also fresh flour tortillas made in the store daily. My kids love the bean burritos.

During the big forest fires in 2008, I stopped by El Charrito and the fire engines were lined up outside while the firefighters from all over got fresh delicious Mexican food. I was impressed!

You won't be sorry if you venture a few blocks off the 101 and try this place. It looks like a hole in the wall but the food is unbelievable.

The only reason I have been to this store is for the breakfast burritos. They are really good, the best part is the homemade tortilla, but they have ham, bacon or chorizo to choose from with egg and potato or they also have chicken or beef burritos with rice and beans. Either way, excellent burritos, a little small for a man, but pleasing to the taste buds.

OMG!!!!! Let me tell you, this place is amazing. I have been all over the country and have never tasted food like this. It's a family run business and the food is always so fresh and the taste is always consistent. They even make homemade flour tortillas and the greatest tamales I have ever tasted. I am Mexican and have always thought that my grandma cooked the greatest food, however, i no longer think that way after experiencing the flavors of El Charrito. I highly recommend it. I LOVE THIS PLACE. Tip: Try the Chile Verde-it's the best!!!!! You will not be disappointed!!!!!!

Message from El Charrito - Authentic Mexican Restaurant

Like many immigrants who came to this country in hopes of opportunity and a better life, the Moncada’s migrated to this country from Mexico in the early 60’s with the same mentality and in pursuit of the of the American dream. Similar to many immigrants, our family had to work hard in order save money to be able to open a small business.

The Moncada’s had experience owning a small grocery store in Mexico, and at the time businesses were not catering to the Mexican community. So naturally, in 1981, they opened a small grocery store with a small deli counter that sold Teresa’s (the matriarch of the family) recipes. After opening multiple grocery stores in the 1980’s and 1990’s, our family decided to shift their focus to what they do best which is selling easy to-go style food while using old Mexican cooking techniques.
