Located just a few blocks from the ocean in Corona Del Mar, Oysters is a landmark at the junction of the Pacific Coast Highway and MacArthur Boulevard. The restaurant is renowned for its California- and Asian-inspired cuisine which is served in a beautiful upbeat atmosphere punctuated by live jazz and a full bar. Owned by vintners Walt and Mona Babcock of Babcock Vineyards and their managing partner, Cary Redfearn, Oysters opened in 1989 with the goal of providing the Newport Beach area with the highest quality seafood and steaks in the county. Since then, Oysters has earned the reputation of having a constantly evolving menu that utilizes local and Asian ingredients to provide spectacular presentations and unique tastes. This, coupled with its award-winning wine list, lively atmosphere, professional service and live jazz have made Oysters a hot spot in Orange County.

The Scene
White-tiled floors and a long wooden bar create a bistro-like feel in the front of the restaurant where customers can sidle up to the bar or sit at a table. A live jazz band plays nightly at 7pm, adding romantic ambience. The high-backed booths, yellow walls and portraits of jazz greats give the adjacent dining room a simple, modern feel.

The Food
The restaurant offers a varied oyster selection; the sampler plate includes all the different varieties. Asian-inspired dishes outshine American fare on the rest of the menu. The chef puts a creative twist on the calamari appetizer, making it kung pao-style, served in sauce, scallions and hot peppers. The ginger-marinated ahi is cooked medium-rare and so tender it almost melts. Don't miss the divine chocolate-banana souffle.

Seafood & Steaks

by Lance M. | insider Insider | Rank: 17,317

Located right on PCH where it intersects with MacArthur Blvd, Oysters is a terrific spot for a high quality dinner in an upscale environment. You can count on oyster blobs that are fresh and plump in their namesake raw oyster platter! Dinners are of similar freshness and quality -- you won't be disappointed at Oysters if you are up for fresh seafood in a tony neighborhood.

Absolutely amazing, top of the line experience, superb food, fabulous service.

by wodar1

We checked in at the Hyatt Newport and asked the concierge to recommend a restaurant and without hesitation he said "Oysters". So we had him make us a reservation. We showed up about 30 minutes early and thought we would have a drink at the bar. The maitre d' said he could seat us right away if we wanted, so we took him up on his offer. We started off with the Spicy Salmon Tempura Roll which was incredible. Then we had the Kung Pao Calamari. This is one of the best dishes I have ever had, the calamari was tender, sweet, spicy, fabulous!!!! The entrees were just as incredible. I had the Halibut with shrimp risotto and my wife had the white sea bass with creamy mashed potatoes abottle of Hitching Post Pinot Noir to go with it and i'm talking culinary heaven. Our server was top notch, pleasant, knowledgeable, attentive without being intrusive, a real pleasure. After the meal the comped us after dinner drinks, a Tuaca for me and an Amaretto for my wife.

Pros: Food, Service

Cons: None that I could find

Amazing atmoshpere, delicious food, great location

by andierenee707

I went here with a group of co workers for a meeting and it was amazing. They completely catered to our needs. They put us in an excellent location in their garden room, so we would be able to hear each other. After dinner we went into the lounge to listen to the jazz band. We had amazing signature cocktails (bar tenders know their stuff) Over all I recommend Oysters for any occasion; date night, group of friends, business. From what I understand they do wonderful banquets in their private room. Any time is good to come here.

Pros: Everyone on the staff can assist you with anything you may need

Cons: ?

Fantastic!

by mmdanc

Dinner at Oysters was great. Very nice atmosphere, fine dining with a relaxed environment. The menu was very interesting with all kinds of selections. From bacon-wrapped dates for an appetizer, to the pear salad, and a well-reccomended swordfish for dinner, everything was fantastic! The wine list was also good, supplying mostly California wines that seem to be carefully selected. If you really know your California wines, you'll enjoy this list. If not, the server seemed to know quite a bit and was ready to make suggestions.
Overall, great food, service, and atmosphere.

This Place is a "WOW"

by fannybay

Had dinner last Friday on date night with my wife - we were seated promptly and enjoyed the view of the live jazz and activity in the bustling bar. We shared the scallop appetizer with fresh pea puree, kung pao calamari and wild salmon tempura rolls - all fabulous. For dinner, the thick cut swordfish was the best I've ever had and my wife's prime filet mignon was meltingly tender.

Our server provided relaxed, yet professional service and suggested a great pinot (Goldeneye) to go with our dinner. We couldn't pass up the housemade s'mores for dessert which were decadently delicious!

Oysters reminded me of some of the best and more interesting restaurants in San Francisco and New York - great atmosphere, service and innovative menu - we'll be back!

Overpriced yummy oysters with snootty service

by jwhung

My hubby and I saw this restaurant in passing and were craving oysters so we stopped in for a lite lunch. We were the first ones there since they just opened for dinner. The waitress was pretty snootty and barely greeted us when we entered. We had to wait for another guy who ended up seating up in the dining room which was nice but feeling kind of hollow, so we moved to the patio where I guess was the snobby waitress' section. OVerall the food was very flavorable and tasty. Had the Caesar with walnuts (very blue-cheesy), the Kung Pao Calamari (a nice kick of spice) and of course the oyster sampler were a must, but certainly overpriced. I'll give her credit tho, the waitress knew her menu. I"ve had osyters elsewhere just was good but without the attitude. I'd have consider about going back again and to be in the mood to deal with the snobbiness. This place could be a 5 star if the service wasn't so overdone.

Pros: Yummey Oysters, Good Wine List

Cons: Snobby service, overpriced dishes, awkward parking

The best Happy Hour...A favorite Spot for Locals!

by curveball

The appetizers here have always been outstanding - now they're half priced during Happy Hour.
Afterwards, we had dinner in the dining room - listened to the sounds of live jazz and had a great goat cheese salad and probably the best Filet Mignon I've ever had - on top of wasabi fries with fresh asparagus. This chef knows his stuff - my date had the Sea Bass - tender, moist and lots of flavor. The trio of creme brulee special was divine. Service was casual but professional and the wine list is a ten. We'll be back for more.

Pros: Fabulous food, wine, cocktails and ambience

Cons: Parking signs are confusing but their back lot is adequate

Mixed experience. Overcooked meats, fantastic seafood. Nice music.

by diner128

ixed experience. Overcooked pork, fantastic seafood. Nice music, friendly service, small menu. Low carb diet unfriendly, will not substitute veggies for potatoes (the first place I have seen that does not) only starch for starch. And starch is in every entree. The waiter said that medium-rare fillet would be like rare, and suggested medium. It was overcooked. Nice wine list, but very pricey.

Pros: great seafood and veggies, clearly talented chef

Cons: not flexible, overcooked meats

great date place and good for friends too

by crystalls3

the best! My all-time favorite place to eat. High class, yet casual. Oysters appetizer and a bottle of Villa Maria Sauvginon Blanc. The soybean crostini starter is delicious. Live Jazz on some nights.
