Millenium Restaurant is dedicated to supporting the essential earthly concepts of organic food production, small farms, sustainable agriculture, recycling and composting. We cook with fresh produce delivered everyday, and choose organic whenever possible. We believe that a gourmet dining experience can be created out of vegetarian, healthy, and environmentally friendly foods. We are proud to state that our restaurant is completely free of genetically modified foods.

The Scene
The neon-lit sign outside is immediately contrasted by the glamorous, 1920s-styled entryway that the restaurant shares with the Hotel California. In the dining area, fishing nets hang from the ceiling with lights caught within, dimly illuminating the auburn floors and full bar. On one side of the room, a dozen two-top tables line the wall spaced only two feet apart, which forces each couple to compete for volume. Larger parties fill traditional round booths--sans leather seat lining.

The Food
Millennium's Executive Chef Eric Tucker breaks tradition in ways less obvious than his omission of meat, dairy and eggs. Pinpointing the type of food served is almost impossible, as the spices and herbs used to compliment entrees are not the standard picks of any one cuisine. For instance, the almond-cake entree is accompanied by hand-picked mushrooms, whole beans, horseradish cashew-cream and cranberry-orange relish. The desserts are just as complex, but not as daring: After all, no meat-eater would take pause over eating a spiced pumpkin cake topped with white chocolate and ginger spread.

Hits: A meal turns into a unique experience and sends diners through countless flavors and cuisines without a trace of any animal products, and it's easy to find a perfect complement to any meal in the long list of organic beers, wines and creative juice cocktails.

Misses:
The atmosphere is not as fantastic as the food--the open kitchen, high ceilings and often cramped seating can make the place a little louder than preferred.

The Inside Scoop

  1. When to Go - Every full moon, the restaurant joins forces with the Hotel California to offer couples a romantic four-course meal based around aphrodisiacs, followed by one night's stay in the hotel, all for under $200.
  2. Where to Sit - If you're looking for a two-person table, ask for a window seat to avoid the closely packed tables lined against the wall.
  3. Save Money - On the second Wednesday of every month, the restaurant tries to "convert a carnivore" by offering a 25-percent discount.

Ratings_icons Okay food good service

roopeshsheth

The food is okay, with a lot of very unique combinations and concoctions. The spread used on the table butter is made of tofu, for example. Almond butter in entrees. Cashew milk is used in place of dairy. Be ready for something different when you come here!

Pros: good ambience, good lighting, good service

Cons: strange location, not enough tofu plate

The place is the cream of the vegan crop. Imaginative, wonderfully presented, miraculous creations, most low fat and health conscious as well. Stunning complimentary side dishes, wines, desserts, appetizers, main courses- you really cannot go wrong. and look for their monthly event too- like aphrodiasic dinner!

Though I've heard a lot about this restaurant and finally made my reservations. I'd give the restaurant credit for serving a niche market of Vegetarians and for having good service; however the food (taste, menu) did not meet my expectations. Maybe I'm missing something since this restaurant is "recommended", but I found the food unsavory lacking flavor (Bland at best), creativity in ingredients or presentation. There are many better restaurants in SF that I rather go to for a good dinning experience in this price range, decor and service. Even my last chance at the desert was a let down. If you are looking for great vegetarian restaurant go to Herbivore instead.

Pros: Vegetarian, Service

Cons: Food

Ratings_icons not vegan don't worry!

I took my girlfriend here for Valentine's Day last year. I had reservations and we were seated within 10 minutes. The atmosphere here is great! Excellent lighting and a nice layout. The food however is out of this world! Totally vegan and delicous. I'm not even a vegitarian and I loved every bite. The presentation was nice and waitstaff was able to help me choose a great dinner. I would highly reccomend this place to anyone looking for a unique and memorable dining experience.

Pros: excellent food, atmosphere, variety

Cons: slightly expensive

Ratings_icons how is this VEGAN?!!?!

Delicious. Everything we had here was great, especially the dessert. I do not understand how it can be vegan and so delicious. Knowledgable waitstaff are a great help. A little pricey but worth it!!

Ratings_icons I'm not a vegetarian, but I eat here.

Bill_C

I'm not a vegetarian, not even ovo-lacto much less vegan, but I think the food here is outstanding. When I eat at a vegetarian restaurant I do not compare the food with meat dishes. I enjoy the vegetarian dishes for what they are. At Millenium the food is outstanding.

Pros: The food

Cons: None I know of

Ratings_icons Who needs meat?

This excellent vegan restaurant manages to turn out flavorful, rich and hearty dishes without one ounce of anmial products -- no meat, no dairy, nothing! The dishes are imaginative and reassuring at the some time. The ambeince is hip and romantic without being trendy. The service is excellent but not cloying. All in all, one of the City's best dining experience (even for your carnivore friends -- they won't miss the meat!)

Ratings_icons Food is excellant... Service sucks

When we got there we waited about 10 minutes before the hostess showed up.
Once seated, everyone was great and friendly except our waitress kept on disappearing on us for quite sometime. The food, however was excellent. Definitely try the stuffed squash blossoms and the chocolate lover's dessert. Yummy... nothing wrong with the food here. The ambience was ok, small cobwebs on the ceiling and things are looking a bit run-down but overall a nice cozy place. I would recommend to my friends as long as they weren't expecting to leave quickly. Waiting around for the wait staff might spoil any plans they've made.

My husband - a confirmed meat and dairy lover - accompanied me in a spirit of adventure, but left in awe of the inventive, delectable eats we enjoyed. Our eating experience - every morsel - was nothing short of orgasmic. Try the flourless chocolate cake for dessert, if you have room. Its dairy-free creation proves they work miracles in their kitchen. The one drawback was the dining room's size. Although the decor and ambience please the eye and the spirit, the tables are a bit close together making private conversation difficult.

Ratings_icons not for the meat eaters...

laney04

I went to Millenium with an open mind about vegan food, plus i had heard great things about the place from vegans to carnivores alike. Although the food was good and the service and atmosphere were nice, it will be a one-time experience for me. There was nothing on the menu that really popped out at me as sounding really good and that I had to try it. My entree and my friend's entree weren't particularly flavorful and didn't really stand out in our eyes. The one thing both of us really enjoyed was the butter-substitute spread they serve with their bread which was something to talk about.
So, in the future, it's not a place I'd revisit, especially since the food isn't cheap or convenient and the only draw was that it was an experience to have eaten at a "fancy vegan" restaurant.

Pros: online reservations

Ratings_icons Service ensures they will never be great

shoefnik

I have eaten here 6 times wanting it to get better and but it hasn't. If it is in this review, it happened to me 6 times... I made reservations and they always sit me 15-20 minutes late even though tables were available. Host(ess) acted snooty and demeaning. Wait staff was not helpful and acted aloof - avoided eye contact with all tables. Even with reservations, they sat me in the front next to people waiting for tables 3 out of 6 times.

Pros: Creative Food, Good Atmosphere

Cons: No parking, Horrible Service, Expensive
