I must admit that Zanzibar has an eclectic style, however not the greatest club in the westside. When the venue gets packed on a Friday and Saturday night, there's literally no room to dance or walk around. They should really limit the number of club goers inside. And I waited almost 45 minutes for my drink - the line is messy and long. If you're looking to have a great time without all the fuss, I recommend going to Hollywood.

I though this was a nice place UNTIL YESTERDAY.

I went last night to the salsa night... my girlfriend and I paid $20 to get in, because there was a life band.

I had one drink at my house and then I had one drink at Zanzibar...went outside for a second and guess what...

JOHN THE ASSIAN GUY AT THE DOOR... DIDN'T LET ME GO BACK IN....

He let me frizz out outside.... I had to beg him please I'm frizzing,,, he didint care.... my other friend that was going to pick me up didnt show up until one hour after...

I was soooo cold and sooo mad that I ended up dancing salsa right there in the street. I love salsa music... its my favorite.

I PAID $20 to get in... and JOHN who is an $#%^R%&^^ didnt care about how much I paid... THE MOST UNRESPECTFULL treat I 've ever had.... He really offended me !!!!!

But for now on I'll take all my friends to the salsa night at MANZOON (They have salsa night..wednesday and saturday night )

i love Zanzi! I used to go almost every weekend and I always had a fun time. I had not been there in a while, but when I went about 2 months ago, it was still the same fun place with terrible AC! LOL. The cool bartender guy was still there and the bouncers are pretty cool. The girl bartenders arent really the best... seriously. My sis said that she was charged an extra $4 on her tab, but she didn't realize it until the next day. She had a girl bartender. I've never had a problem with that, but then again, I'll pay cash and get from the asian guy bartender or someone will buy me drinks... haha. Anyway, the music on Saturdays is pretty awesome. The DJs are cool. Fridays are just okay. More mellow and the music isn't as great, but it's not bad either. I recommend this place. Don't expect a Hollywood crowd (thankfully), but expect that EVERY Saturday night is a totally different crowd. I was there one time when there so many guys! Woo! LOL... and then I was there another time when there were tons of girls, like 4 for each guy thing... lol. Then another time was a bunch of asians, then another time tons of beach boys... lol... and so on... you get it. =)

Zanzibar is definitely one of my favorite clubs in Los Angeles. Being a mother of two, I don't want to go to a place where I feel like I'm a chaperone and this is never the case at Zanzibar. Zanzibar has such a great mix of people, amazing dj's, and so many great live shows - it has never disappointed me.

I ARRIVED AND FOUND A SEMI LONG LINE WITH A FAT SECURITY GUARD THAT HAD A LIST THAT MY NAME WAS NOT ON. I HAD TO PAY 20 US DOLLARS TO ENTER THE CLUB. THERE WERE NOT MANY HONIES. BUT PLENTY OF HOBOS. THE SANTA MONICA BEACH CROWD IS NOT THE BUSINESS. IN FACT I DON'T THINK THERE REALLY IS ANY TYPE OF SCENE. IT WAS KIND OF AN ANYTHING GOES EXPERIENCE. HOWEVER THE BAND WAS GREAT. SLY'S DAUGHTER, BABY STONE WAS AMAZING. SHE MADE IT ALL WORTH WHILE.
THE PLACE WAS DEFINITELY TOO CROWDED. YOU WERE BASICALLY CONFINED TO WHERE THE HECK YOU WERE. MOVING AROUND WAS VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE AND PHYSCALLY CHALLENGING. KIND OF LIKE THE 405 DURING RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC.

THE BAR IS A DIVE. BUT I LIKE IT. JUST MAKE SURE YOU GET THERE EARLY SO YOU WON'T INVEST 20 US RECESSION DOLLARS TO BECOME A HUMAN SARDINE.

THE CHARACTERS IN THIS JOINT ARE IMPECCABLE, IF YOU ARE A WRITER YOU COULD GET A BUNCH OF MATERIAL FROM THIS PLACE.

I WOULD GO BACK IF I COULD GET IN FOR FREE. ONLY.

ITS NOT WORTH INVESTING 20 US BUCKAROOSKI'S.

Yes, the bartenders and waitresses will rip you off if you let them. Check your bill CAREFULLY! The waitress had the audacity to add a tip onto my check after I had already tipped her the standard 15% AND an additional $60 bucks in cash.

I also dropped my cell phone in the VIP area ONCE THE club had closed, so more likely than not, it was an employee that picked it up and didn't have the common courtesy to turn it in.

Complain to the manager, you say? Right!! Destiny, the GM, took my call and assured me she would check the camera and get to the bottom of the additional monies added to my bill, but do you think she ever called me back? You guessed it, NO

I'll still go here when I'm in SM, I like the music, but will I ever buy bottle service again? Uh..no, I'll stick to single drinks and make sure the bartenders get what they deserve..if anything...

Shame on you, Zanzibar, Erin & Destiny

I'm a big fan of Afro funke Thursdays so I checked the new Salsa night on Mondays. I have danced Salsa a little before but I was a bit rusty so I took both lessons( 8pm-10pm). The instructor Cristian amazing... not only is he one of the best dancers I've ever scene, he is patient and teaches some really cool moves. The place was packed and now I know why. With the recession in full swing you can park your car (Free), get a 2 hr lesson (included in cover), and dance til 2am for only $5. The girl at the door says it's $10 when they have live music but the dance lessons are still included. This place is a steal of a deal.

Oh, hell, to the no! Seriously, I actually paid 10 dollars after midnight for what was a sickening experience.

The smell, once inside knocked me back. And the bar tender was gay, and made a comment that I wasnt quite hot enough for "her". "Her?" Um...not gay biotch...No thanks, and I mean that seriously. What other way could I mean that?

Ok, now I'm seriously peeved. Moving deeper inside, I find that I actually cant move. There is no clear dilineation between the dancefloor and not the dancefloor. No one really wanted to move either. Not good.

I finally made it over to the "other side" and was greeted with move stink, the bathroom was stinking well beyond it's doors. Running away I turned around and was blasted in the face with the rank smell of fresh human fhart.

If that wasnt enough, I was almost jumped by the group of Cholos that were standing in that area. OMFG.

Ok, running , trying to anyway I made it behind the dancefloor to a spot against the wall. Lucky for you they have shelving so you can rest you drink. After being eyed by a bunch of raggedy and angry looking men, and a few women, I was ready to leave.

But nothing sent me flying faster than the big, and I mean big fat ugly guy who somehow managed to "pull up" beside me and give me the eye. Oh God! I literally threw my drink down and ran out of the nearest door I could find, lucky for me, I was near one.

Rude staff, Unreasonable price after midnight, Nasty people and stinky place, it actually smelled like vHomit outside, which should've been an indicator but oh, well, what did I know. I tried. NOT Recommended People.

Overcrowded, UNDERSTAFFED. Two female bartenders working behind the bar. Both ignore EVERYONE and work at the pace of turtles. So, after waiting 15 minutes to get your drink, you find yourself right in the middle of the OBNOXIOUS dance floor. The music is SO LOUD there's no way you could even carry on a conversation in this place, and the dance floor is full of SO MANY RANDOM people that you have to have to hold onto yourself for dear life. NOT TO MENTION female silluetes (ala the old ipod commercials) for NO REASON are projected onto a huge screen. There is only ONE ROOM to sit in to lounge. It has about one long couch and then a few chairs. This place is the worst run, worst designed place in LA.

Well, the DJ's were good.(3/26/08) sound system, solid. The bar staff sucked and the door men were Harsh. I find it hard to beleive that Smacka is still soo tough. what ever happend to going out & not being so harped apon. I liked the decor, but the lack of care made it hard to care for the staff. I pride myself on being a good patrion, but this place made it difficult to givre back. hope I have a better time time next time, I may give it a try. Good luck yall.

I've tried Zanzibar on a thursday, friday, and saturday night and really don't see what peeps are talking about. The drinks aren't special and I thought they were slightly over priced in regard to the venue where I was at. The girls that frequent this place aren't pretty. At best this bar is a just a "nice change of pace" because it's different from everything else in santa monica.

I came here on Thursday night for Afro Funke, which has really great music and the vibe is very chill...you feel more like you're at a cool private party. I came again on Saturday, which is hip hop dance music and VERY crowded, but everyone dances. The waitress, a pretty girl named Tyler, remembered me from Thursday night and shook my hand and said that she was glad to have me back. No one has ever remembered me like that - especially at a club! If you like big crazy crowds, come Saturday. If you like to chill out and listen to great music then come Thursday. Peace.

No line. $10 cover on Friday. Place doesn't start getting packed until 11:30. Diverse crowd. A handful of cute girls. Strongest Drinks Ever!!!! Good too!!! Bartender's nice and took care of me all night. True no place to sit. Small Dance floor. Ambience average. 25ish crowd. Definitely a spot to check out. Just show up later in the evening.

I hadn't been to Zanzibar since last year for a friend's birthday party. Some of my friends were in from out of town and I brought them here because I didn't want to deal with the Hollywood bullsh-t crowd and lines. We didn't wait long in line and security was actually cool (rare!) The waitress, some southern chick, was so hot and cool! She immediately came up to us smiling and was actually nice (rare again) and took care of us all night long. Dude I want her number! The music was cool...hip hop, but not all mainstream shit...some hits from back in the day.

I love Tuesday nights at Zanzibar! My coworkers and I went for a going away party. We work for a design firm, so we are pretty picky about our ambiance. I was hesitant at first, the exterior looks a little sketchy. But once inside, the decor is hip with a Moroccan touch. The music stole the show with the DJ spinning modern Arabesque beats. After a few drinks even my boss was dancing! Casbah night at Zanzibar rocks! We will definitely be back!

Just hosted my bday party there this past Saturday and I have no complaints. We were let in promptly, met the manager and our waitress and were all set. Cute set up. The place has a really nice look and vibe to it. Ppl were cool. The dj played great music the whole night. The security were friendly, our waitress did disappear often, but she would check on us from time to time to make sure we had all the mixers and drinks we needed . Would definitely host a party there again!

this club was average. i think the crowd was fairly diverse. the music was too old school for me. the crowd is good for 25 plus. you wouldnt find too many 21 year olds in the club. the atmosphere felt pretty safe, and that will prolly b the only plus in my book.

Nothing like any bar/club I've ever been to! Had a cool vibe and very unique. It had a pretty small dance floor, but it did not get too packed. They played funky music, w/ a mix of old school hip hop and reggae. The people were chill and did not exemplify the typical hollywood crowd. I had a blast!

Great decor, great music, and definitely not a touristy scene - however, it's not your usual typical Top 40 and Hip hop music w/ go-go dancers - If you're looking for a huge mega club with top 40 stuff go to White Lotus, Avalon, or Highlands but if you want to go somewhere funky and offbeat, then Zanzibar's your spot

You have to really do your research on this place, because sometimes the DJs rock and sometimes they are horrible. And they will charge you a $10 cover either way, which is definitely not worth it if you dont go on a good night, since the crowd is nothing special, even for the westside.

Afro Funke is dope on thursdays, and Garth Trinidad DJs on Sundays. Just make sure you always call ahead and check if anyone has the place rented out for a bday party, or you risk getting stuck listening to super wack mainstream garbage while a gazillion kids are sitting around talking and looking important. Usually though, the age range of the crowd is quite varied, and people come here to dance, and they're pretty good at it. The bartenders are slow as hell, and sometimes they get cocky - avoid the drinks at all costs, they are rather high-priced.

Went on a Saturday.

Club is unique, but one experience is enough until improvements are made. One cool thing, really close to the freeway and easy to get to. Parking is pretty easy.

Please invest in a better a/c, the club is small but the air quality is disgusting after 12pm. Hot and smelly...

Crowded and like other review says, people stand around on the dance floor. Lots of guys and not enough pretty girls...

Speakers are below standard, doesn't take that much to rock a small club like this, please invest in some descent speakers... There's no deep bass at all and the DJ's choice of songs or skill on a saturday isn't helping at all.

After a lackluster bar-hopping rendezvous on Main St., we stopped by here because a lot of our UCLA dance major friends had raved about it. Even though it was 2am, they let us in for a sneak, and sure enough, all the lights were on and everyone was still dancing strong. The dance floor huge, the crowd chill--mixed, unique, and beautiful--the lounge cool. And an air-co that works.

We went on a Thursday night, which I believe was a random night of African music and world beats. Whatever it was, it was great. I am in love with this place and will def be coming back soon.

I've been to zanzibar at least a half a dozen times, and I'll keep going. Its about $10 to get in (but KCRW members get 2 for 1), and the drinks are a little pricey, but its worth it every time. The DJs are always good, and the crowd is hot! Always a good time.

I've been to zanzibar at least a half a dozen times, and I'll keep going. Its about $10 to get in (but KCRW members get 2 for 1), and the drinks are a little pricey, but its worth it every time. The DJs are always good, and the crowd is hot! Always a good time.

Pros: attractive people, music, atmosphere

Cons: cover

.

The last few times I have been to Zanzibar it has been a miss. This used to be the place to come if you love to dance and love a great cocktail - without the Hollywood vibe and attitude. Garth Trinidad and Jason Bentley are awesome, however the patrons have gotten quite annoying. Since when is it acceptable to stand (not groove) in the middle of the dance floor and comment on every woman that passes by? My advice: Do not go on a Sunday when it is a three day weekend. It is over crowded and the usual, chill audience is absent. Sunday nights bring out a culturally diverse crowd. However, Friday nights are not. The bartenders and servers are great! Treat them with respect, not attitude, and you will be graciously taken care of.

Been to Zanzibar a couple of times and it is a pretty good scene usually. Friday night features electronic music and is usually hit or miss esp regarding the guy/girl ratio. Saturday is Hip/Hop and gets a little bit more crowded and lively with a little bit more of an urban feel. Worth checking out.

So myself and four friends come here last Saturday to dance. The $10 cover wasn't bad given the decent music and casual if not a little bohemian crowd. But whent he bouncer tells the woman in our group they have to pick their pocketbooks up when we are surrounding them and put them someplace where we won't be able to see them I gotta say it's time to get rid of the attitude. As we leave and mention it to the hostess, she of course smugly says, "tough break". And the bouncer who has since moved outside suggests we not come back to boot.

I've been to quite a few bars and clubs, but nothing quite compared to Zanzibar. It has the distinction of being roomy and cozy at the same time. When I went it wasn't packed at all, but it was a good enough crowd. (It was still happening even though it was 11pm on a sunday night!) The music played is fun to dance too, and people are respectful of your dancing space. The bartenders were really nice and the enviroment had a nice ambiance. The admission price wasn't ridiculous either, it ranges from 5-15 bucks, depending on the night. If you attend UCLA and are sick of Century, then go to Zanzibar!

I appreciate the laid-back groovey atmoshpere Zanzibar maintains without drawing oh-so-trendy crowd. Drinks are good (nt the cheapest) and they occasionally boast great DJs (like Mr Bently himself...)

Zanzibar (owned by the same folks as Temple Bar on Wilshire in Santa Monica, and Little Temple in Silverlake) is my favorite club. It's not too big, it's kind of small, but not too small. The music is never too loud. They burn incense at the bar, giving the place a lovely aroma. The drinks are strong (sometimes too strong for me, in fact) and usually yummy, and they have an interesting menu of specialty drinks like mojitos and watermelon martinis, which is great for people like me who never know what to order at a bar. I also enjoy the Morrocan decor, although it's trendiness right now makes it a bit less exciting perhaps.

Friday nights feature deep house music and Jason Bentley, a fantastic local dj destined for bigger and better things (I think he's already had shows at Avalon). There are plenty of people here dancing and drinking, but not too many, and there is a respectful atmosphere of men actually asking women if they would like to dance instead of just making assumptions and grabbing on. I wish this attitude would spread to the rest of LA's clubs.

The crowd dresses casually yet well, but not in an intimidating way, and is very racially diverse. Most patrons are in their mid-to-upper twenties and early thirties.

Cover is $10 on Fridays, Saturdays, Tuesdays, and probably most other nights as well. Your KCRW card will get you 2 for 1 admission every night except Friday. The club is open every night except Monday. Saturday nights are hip-hop, which I don't enjoy as much and find too generic for a cool place like Zanzibar, but that's what sells right now, so I guess I can't blame them. Tuesday nights also seem to be hip-hop, although I didn't stick around long, so I'm not sure.

I have spent many a great Friday night here and am interested to see what Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays have to offer.

I read all the previous reviews last night and I kept thinking, "But they're all from two years ago!" Sorry, Zanzibar still hasn't invested in an AC. I got there with my girlfriends in the pouring rain. One girl made the huge huge mistake of wearing a sweater. Big mistake. By midnight, we (skimpy tanks and all) were overwelmed by the heat and had to leave. The other girls wearing skirts and bare back tank tops had the right idea (even though they probably froze their asses off getting in). And what's up with the unusual number of men dancing by themselves? The only saving graces Zanzibar has is a good DJ and gorgeous looking club. I can only imagine how this place is in the summer...

Pros: good music, great venue, diverse crowd

Cons: TOO DAMN HOT, small dance floor, TOO DAMN HOT

.

We've been to Zanzibar three times recently. The first night was awesome -- great DJ, nice ambiance, good dancing, good value, but temps were hot. The next two visits were only okay, with some concerns. The DJ's were still good, but on the most recent Saturday night, the night became pretty lame. The male/female ratio was awful and the guys were weak and overly aggressive. The worst part was the several impromptu breakdance circles that broke out and cleared the floor. Guys were engaging in "battles" like a bad B2K movie. Bouncers did try to break them up, but it took time. Dress code needs to be enforced -- hats, wife beaters, jerseys, sweatshirts with hoods should not be allowed. Good club overall, just a bit hit or miss.

Pros: Ambiance, DJ's / Music

Cons: , Skaky clientele, B2K wannabees (lame!)

.

Service is everything to some people. If that's you, don't take this yuppie elitest establishment for a spin. The bartenders need a serious lesson in customer service manners, but at least their drinks are strong. The bouncers behave like used car salesmen and are extremely curt/rude. Poor ventilation and lack of air conditioning exacerbate the already too-hot environment. The conglomeration of candles make for an even more heated night while the DJ mixes track after track of yesteryear's lame hip-hop hits. The $10 cover charge was overpriced, to say the least.

I love the decor at "Zanzibar" and the music invites you to dance...Mostly Hip Hop and R&B..but unfortunately the air conditioning system is pretty bad and after a few songs you start sweating like crazy...too bad 'cause it's a nice dancing spot in Santa Monica..just don't wear long sleeves and try to make the best out of it..

After getting in and shelling out a 10$ cover charge, and seeing the eclectic crowd and low-low seats, i was impressed, but thats where it ended, the cool sounding trancish ambient music became monotonous cause that's all the DJ played ALL night... IMO you need to vary the music at least a little bit, this was the same non-vocal ambient music alllll night, the only good part was the crowd was above average... temple bar (same owner) is waaay better ...

I was laughing when I read the previous review because I did the EXACT same thing! I went on a Sat. night and the dj's started with hip hop/mainstream type stuff which was really cool. Then, they switched dj's and started playing the reggae-techno stuff and I wanted to die. It seemed like they were playing it forever, so I left by 12am. But, I was told by my friends who stayed and they switched back to hip hop. They did a good job revamping the place.

I went to Zanzibar after reading the review on CitySearch. The outside is not pretty. There wasn't a a real sign, just a billboard. Inside the atmosphere is nice, reminded me a little bit of Tantra in Miami Beach. The music was pretty good at first, lots of hip hop. But after 11:30 the dj mixed everything with reggae. We got tired of that and left by 12. The dance floor is really hot and small, so if you dance, get close to the one fan that they have. People over there tend to dance really "big" and take up a lot of room, so watch out!

I used to frequent this place before it became Zanzibar when it was West End. The bar is essentially the same, but West End was a chill bar. Zanzibar has the aura of a dance club without the needed ventilation. So when I went there with my date the smell of hundreds of sweaty bodies dancing got a bit too much. It was like a sauna with people's sweat!!

Awesome african/carribean/beat music on Sundays. Crowded enough to say this place was hopping. The crod seem to be young professionals but without attitude. Drinks were kind of expensive. Parking outside for 4 bucks.

Finally made it to Zanzibar since Bentley & Co. moved from Sugar. Walking in, you don't know what to expect behind the curtain, but then you hear the music and know you're in the right place! Went on a Sat Night to see special guest Marques Wyatt. Unreal show. Bar is cool, but gets real crowded real fast. While Sugar is more of a club that has a bar, Zanzibar is a bar that has a small dance floor. *Emphasize small!* Get on stage if you can, there's actually elbow room up there. Overall, good looking people, great music, and cool surroundings. I'd definitely go back - but get there early!

Nice chill lounge place and good music, a KCRW vibe, well what can you expect Garth Trinidad spins that nite. I especially liked how they played some Brazilian tracks, they mixed a Suba track in as well. Good mature and mixed crowd.

A nicely re-decorated Westend with some funky couches and drapes that makes it a nice place to lounge.... that is until the catchy international beats gets your hips shaking. Definitely worth checking out.

I went on a Thursday night some time ago so I don't know if my experience is a good representation. The place was kind of empty. No one on the dance floor and plenty of spaces on the couches. The setup was nice. That's the only justificaiton for the $5 cover. Otherwise it was just another bar, at least for that night. I can see this place catch on really soon though.
